Arcadia Faith Leaders Voice Support for Peaceful Protests The members of the Arcadia Interfaith Action Group — who represent the Baha’i, Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim, and Sikh faith traditions in the community — have united in vehement condemnation of “the senseless murder of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer,” they said in a press release Tuesday. The group recognizes “that people of color are much more likely to be the victims of such violent treatment by law enforcement personnel.” The group says it supports and acknowledges the Constitutional rights of those protesting and crying out for justice. However, the group does not support looting, violence, or destruction of property. “These are counterproductive and do not promote a just society in which all people are treated fairly under the law. We need a
lot more acceptance of our differences and celebration of our diversity in order to unite with one another.” The group includes the following leaders: • Rev. onprofit organizations need local governments. Lately, the role of local governments to provide essential services like public health and safety has been emphasized, but local governments are also important contributors and participants in defining how cities grow, develop, and thrive. Working in partnerships, cities assure that the needs of a healthy community are satisfied with a good range of homes, jobs, educators, employers, services, and organizations that contribute to our overall well-being and economic development. MADIA Tech Launch is a nonprofit organization that counts on the valuable partnerships of its municipal partners. This is evident in the name of the organization: MADIA was created with the first letters of its original partners: Monrovia, Arcadia, Duarte, Irwindale, and Azusa. Recently, the City of Glendora became the newest partner to help MADIA in its mission to “ensure the region's technical, scientific, and
industrial workforce is connected and has the tools needed to be successful.” Glendora Mayor Michael Allawos remarked “Glendora was thrilled to be invited to join MADIA. Our city is a strong advocate for promoting economic development, not only within its own boundaries, but throughout the San Gabriel Valley; the opportunity to partner with neighboring cities in a joint effort to support the development and growth of local businesses focused on the technical, scientific and industrial workforce is one that could not be missed, especially given the current circumstances where we see how crucial technology, biology and health care is in the recovery from COVID-19.” Municipal partners help MADIA satisfy its mission to encourage technology business enterprises to locate here in the technology heart of the San Gabriel Valley. Cities and businesses work together through MADIA to provide educational programs in entrepreneurship, business finance and operations, as well as technology development and commercialization in
settings which encourage networking and collaboration in this community. Working with its partners, MADIA Tech Launch sponsored BIOTECH 2020 earlier this year, offering a series of presentations and lectures that gave a focus to the burgeoning businesses in the area that focus on health and biotech research, manufacturing, and service delivery. And then came the COVID-19 pandemic. Monrovia’s Mayor Tom Adams discussed how MADIA connections helped facilitate one local biotech business to adapt to new demands brought on by the current health crisis. An established medical lab is working on a soon-tobe announced expansion of its operations. Mayor Adams reported that “it is exciting to see the diversity of biotech that’s coming to Monrovia in part due to the efforts of MADIA members. n Wednesday, Monrovia High School followed through on its plan to have a drive-up graduation where students picked up their diploma, had a photo taken, and then dashed back to their cars to let the next graduate in line receive their diploma, and so on.
It all went off smoothly starting at 10 a.m. Wednesday despite some initial obstacles with the social distancing mandates from state and county health departments. Creative thinking and numerous phone calls to officials finally swayed county officials to allow their graduation to go on as planned. District Superintendent Katherine Thorossian, Principal Kirk McGinnis and Board President Rob Hammond along
with the staff and faculty of Monrovia High School greeted over 300 graduates as their parents drove up to the podium and drove them home after they received a diploma and posed for a quick graduation photo. The initial plan was for the ceremonies to start at 3 p.m.; however, due to concerns over another early curfew probability, the district moved the procession to the morning to give ample time to complete the task.

At their June 1 meeting, Pasadena City Council issued a proclamation declaring Friday, June 5, 2020 “National Gun Violence Awareness Day” in Pasadena to honor and remember all of the victims and survivors of gun violence and support efforts to prevent gun violence. The public is encouraged to watch the meeting online or on KPAS TV. The proclamation will be received by San Gabriel Valley Moms Demand Action, a local grassroots organization working to reduce gun violence. The proclamation reads that gun violence “touches every segment of our society and impacts people of all ages; it increases the probability of death in incidents of domestic violence; raises the likelihood of fatalities by those who intend to injure others, and among those who attempt suicide; it places children and
young people at increased risk of physical harm and injury; and disproportionately affects communities of color.” The proclamation concludes by urging all citizens, businesses, and organizations to work
collaboratively to reduce gun violence. Wear Orange Weekend, June 5-7 National Gun Violence Awareness Day kicks off Wear Orange Weekend, an event held annually in
honor of Hadiya Pendleton, a 15-year-old who was shot and killed in Chicago in 2013, just one week after performing at President Obama’s second inaugural parade. Orange is the color that Hadiya’s friends wore in her honor and is worn throughout the nation to raise awareness about gun violence. The City of Pasadena encourages community members to wear orange June 5-7 in support of the gun violence prevention movement and to share photos on social media using the hashtag #WearOrange. Many local groups are working together to encourage and support efforts to prevent gun violence and save lives, including San Gabriel Valley Moms Demand Action, Students Demand Action, Mothers of Murdered Children, and the All Saints Committee to End Gun Violence.

CANYON OAKS HIGH & MOUNTAIN PARK INDEPENDENT STUDY SCHOOL CELEBRATE CLASS OF 2020 Highlighting the achievements and successes of each student, Canyon Oaks High School and Mountain Park Independent Study School celebrated the graduating Class of 2020 with a drive-thru commencement ceremony at Monrovia High School on Tuesday. “This school year, our graduating class missed many senior opportunities but our community came together and advocated for our students to receive the graduation they deserve,” Board President Rob Hammond said. “Congratulations to all of our seniors from Canyon Oaks and Mountain Park.” To keep the drive-thru commencement ceremony safe for students, families, and staff, each student was only accompanied by those who fit in one family-sized car. At designated times, the graduates individually exited their vehicles and walked across the graduation stage to receive their diplomas.

On Monday, a free mobile application for restaurants was unveiled to the Pasadena community. “Pasadena Be Local Strong” lists Pasadena area restaurants that are open for business. There are no charges to restaurants to be listed and no cost to for users to download the app. The application is a collaboration between Small World Communication and the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce as part of Small World’s Be Local Strong initiative. The

MONROVIA May 21 At 7:08 a.m., a resident in the 300 block of East Walnut called to report his 2007 Chevrolet work truck was parked on the street and had been stolen sometime overnight. The vehicle was entered into Stolen Vehicle System. May 22 At 9:04 a.m., a Monrovia resident called police to report an incident of indecent exposure. She was on a walk in the 400 block of West Duarte, near Magnolia, when a male subject yelled to get her attention and then exposed himself. The woman ran home and called the police. Officers searched the area for the suspect, but were unable to locate him. The suspect is described as a male Hispanic in his 30s, 5-foot-5, thin build, with a shaved head and large tattoo on his arm. At 9:11 a.m., an officer was patrolling the 800 block of South California when he saw a subject he recognized. The subject was consensually contacted and found to be in possession of a pipe that had been used for smoking methamphetamine. The subject was arrested for possession of drug paraphernalia. At 9:51 a.m., the owner of a residence in the 200 block of South Primrose arrived home and discovered his residence had been burglarized while he was gone. He then called police. Officers arrived and located the point of entry into the home. It is unknown if anything was taken. At 10:09 a.m., an officer was patrolling the 400 block of West Duarte when he saw several subjects in the city owned wash underneath the Metro Rail Bridge. All of the subjects had previously been warned and arrested for trespassing. The officer contacted the six subjects and all were arrested for trespassing.

May 24 At 7:13 a.m., officers responded to a business in the 400 block of South Myrtle regarding an alarm activation. When officers arrived, they could smell natural gas emitting from the location. The Monrovia Fire Department was notified. The area was evacuated and the Gas Company responded. The gas supply to the business was shut off and the source of the leak was being investigated by the Gas Company. No injuries reported.
At 10:58 p.m., a resident in the 1800 block of South Encino called police to report two suspects driving a U-Haul that were taking mail from mailboxes. Officers arrived and located the vehicle still in the area. When the suspects saw the officer, they took off at a high rate of speed. The vehicle abruptly stopped on First, north of Fano in Arcadia, where the suspects fled on foot. Arcadia Police Department and the Foothill Air Support Team helicopter responded to assist with containment and a search of the area, but the suspects were not found. The U-Haul van was found to be an unreported stolen from Chatsworth U-Haul. There were several pieces of stolen mail from Arcadia and Monrovia in the vehicle. One of the suspects left their personal identification in the vehicle. May 27
At 1:35 p.m., a resident in the 400 block of East Foothill called to report someone had stolen the catalytic converter from his Honda Element sometime during the night.
At 11:33 a.m., a resident in the 900 block of West Hillcrest called police to report that someone had stolen her Honda CRV sometime during the night. The investigation is continuing.
May 25 At 9:26 a.m., a resident in the 100 block of West Cypress called to report that sometime during the night someone tried to steal her vehicle. She noticed her ignition had been tampered with. At 2:05 p.m., two motorists were traveling toward each other in the 600 block of Norumbega. They were at a blind curve when they collided into one another and their airbags deployed. One driver sustained an injury to the arm from the airbag and the other driver complained of pain to the head and neck. The drivers were treated at the scene by Monrovia Paramedics. May 26
May 23 At 3:56 p.m., a resident in the 600 block of West Olive called police to report a tire on his vehicle had just been slashed by a male Asian suspect, 30-40 years old, wearing black pants, a black hooded
garage door had been forced open. A check of the residence revealed the only loss was 40 rolls of toilet paper.
At 3 p.m., a resident in the 200 block of West Colorado called police to report her residence had been burglarized. She locked and left her residence at 11:30 a.m. to go shopping. When she returned, she discovered her
At 12:43 p.m., a vehicle was reported stolen from a business parking lot in the 1600 block of South Mountain. The victim parked his vehicle in the parking lot and went inside the business. When he returned, his Ford F250 was gone. Officers searched the area and located the vehicle to the rear of a business in Duarte. The vehicle was missing the catalytic converter and a toolbox from the bed of the truck. Investigation is continuing. At 1:51 p.m., an employee from a business in the 600 block of West Huntington called police to report four male suspects entered the business and grabbed various phones and watches, and then left without paying for the merchandise. Officers responded, but the suspects were not located. The investigation is continuing.

Herald Christian Health Center to Launching a Free COVID-19 Testing Location The Herald Christian Health Center is launching a free COVID-19 testing location for anyone with COVID-19 symptoms and all asymptomatic essential workers. The center is the only site in the West San Gabriel Valley community that is able to provide such testing with English, Mandarin and Cantonesespeaking staff. The test is a self-administered nasal swab under the supervision of a healthcare professional and results are reported to patients within 2-3 days. Those who wish to receive a test must call (626) 2868700 to schedule an appointment. The center, located at 923 S. San Gabriel Blvd. in San Gabriel, will open on June 4.

Mountain View High School senior Cindy Lee, this year’s top valedictorian for the Class of 2020, has been named a 2020 Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Scholar, one of only 300 students across the nation to receive the full-tuition scholarship. Lee will attend her dream university, UC Irvine, where she will major in data science and pursue a graduate degree. “When I found out I won, I didn’t believe it. Receiving the Gates scholarship and going to UC Irvine is incredible,” said Lee.

The program is open to small businesses based in cities and unincorporated communities of Riverside County. These businesses must apply online from June 3 to June 19. The grant will provide up to $10,000 in assistance to individual businesses. Applications will be accepted and recommended for grant approval based on meeting requirements. While the city has relaxed enforcement on parking citations for street sweeping since the state stay-at-home order began, it is now asking residents to move cars on your street sweeping day. The city will start issuing citations on June 15. For now, the city will not enforce other parking violations such as permit parking but will continue to cite those who are posing a risk to public safety, such as parking in an alley or on a red curb.

Microenterprise Business Grant Program The Microenterprise Business Grant Program is a United Way Inland Valleys project in partnership with the City of Riverside Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program that offers a one-time grant up to $7,500 to help assist Riverside small businesses with their needs during the local emergency. ave you ever felt micromanaged at work? If your boss doesn't know what you're doing for every moment of the day, you might as well be nonexistent. You definitely couldn't be working or making logical, sound decisions on your own, using your years of expertise. Having someone looking over your shoulder always seems to make me more productive. Wouldn't you agree? No way! For most people, micromanagement is one of the most demotivating things ever. If you want your employees to only work while you babysit them — and to constantly be on the lookout for another job — then micromanage away. But, if you want people who are thoughtful, hardworking, and will go the extra mile for you, trust your employees. There's a new trend that is quite frankly, disturbing. Did you now that some companies are monitoring their employees remotely through their computers? This technology existed before. But, since the pandemic, companies are making the news for their monitoring practices. And, the worst part is, many aren't telling their employees. The employee-monitoring software employers are using can take photos of what you're working on. They can look at which websites you're visiting. Using your phone, they can even detect where you went during the day. The software reports out on an employee's usage in

small increments, looking at how much time the employee spent typing or using the computer mouse. The New York Times recently reported that employee-monitoring company Hubstaff has seen their sales triple since the pandemic began in March. Is this really what work is supposed to be about? Whatever happened to salaried employees being expected to "get the job done" whether it took 30 hours or 60 hours? What about employees in creative fields that may find their most productive time in smaller bursts? Many people agree that depending on the type of work you do, it's not a consistent flow of productivity. We aren't machines after all. What about jobs that center around phone calls that are not hooked directly into your work computer? What about those people like me who like to use, dare I say it, paper? What about people
who print documents out to review them? Or, those who work their thoughts out in a notepad? This state of being monitored is really too much. Companies need to get back to the basics with their leadership skills and mentoring. I have rarely met an employee who doesn't want to pull their own weight at a company that treats them with respect. And, when a company does not respect them or their work, getting great results is next to impossible.

Not everyone can lead an army to victory, or be a heroic firefighter or police officer — and not many can be brilliant doctors or skillful nurses. And yet, the thousands of workers who bravely step forward when called upon to help the vulnerable during this ongoing pandemic deserve as much praise as the "heroes" we

READER REACT TO ‘… PLAYWRIGHT LARRY KRAMER DIED ON WEDNESDAY’ The young will only learn from reading (or hearing from their elders), that once upon a time it was common, even among those who considered themselves tolerant, to speak disparagingly about gays — and most everyone had a
repertoire of gay jokes when things got dull. Thus, when the scourge of AIDS began to kill gay men, government officials at all levels paid little attention to their plight. Worse yet, many among the ultra-religious regarded the suffering of those victims as punishment from God for their "sin" of homosexuality. In my opinion, we owe a debt of gratitude to Larry Kramer for teaching us that an enlightened society should treat as equal, those who are different but harm no one. It's sad to hear about Larry Kramer's death, but we can be certain that others like him will pick up his torch, and keep it aflame.

ast Friday afternoon May 29, the health department cleared the way for struggling local restaurants to reopen for dine-in patrons — the first time since the March stay at home mandate was enacted. For many in our collective communities this was a sign of significant progress and hope that maybe we were getting back to some form of normality after so many weeks of lockdown — getting out of the house and finally having a meal at a table instead of out of a box seemed like a dream come true for many. But then, everything was about to change due to death of a black man at the knee of a police officer as three other officers looked on while the life was draining out of him. On May 25, Minneapolis, Minn. police officers arrested George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, after a delicatessen employee called 9-1-1,
accusing Floyd of using counterfeit $20 bill. Within minutes of the cops arriving to investigate, Floyd was
unconscious and pinned beneath the knee of one police officer, showing no signs of life.

The reaction to the horrific death was met the following day with the firing of the four officers involved by the Minneapolis police chief. In due course, Hennepin County attorney, Mike Freeman, announced third degree murder and manslaughter charges against Derek Chauvin, the officer who can be seen most clearly in witness videos pinning Floyd’s neck with his knee for over 8 minutes. On Wednesday, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, who is now leading the case, increased charges against Chauvin to second-degree murder and also charged the three other offers involved with aiding and abetting second-degree murder, according to the Star Tribune. The violent death of Floyd set off a series of events all over the world, unparalleled even to the riots of 1968 and 1992. The second independent autopsy, paid for by Floyd’s family, confirmed the general consensus that the cause of death was asphyxiation as a result of the now
ex-officer officer kneeling on Floyd’s neck for an extended period of time. Over the weekend and throughout the week, thousands took to the streets to protest the murder in Minneapolis. Across the world, the protests occasionally escalated and erupted into violent confrontations and fringe groups started looting stores and businesses. Graphic television images, many from helicopter vantage points, showed a staggering number of people, mostly peaceful, but also the looting that at points became quite brazen,
particularly in Santa Monica and New York City. Additionally, arsonists set fire to police cruisers and businesses were destroyed in cities across the world. The week saw additional, albeit peaceful protests, in Monrovia and Pasadena by faith based organizations. Monday night also saw the National Guard deployed in Washington D.C. at President Trump’s request – to have a military show of force against protesters. Trump has vowed to use military might to “dominate” protesters. Twenty-three states

. . . CONFRONT RACISM now have also activated the National Guard to combat “civil unrest.” On Monday night Black Lives Matter once again organized a protest in Old Town Pasadena. The on Tuesday, the Pasadena branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and the National Association of Day Labors (NDLON) along with faith leaders from the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance (IMA) and the Community Clergy Coalition (CCC) led a peaceful vigil. The caravan extended for miles in northwest Pasadena. The peaceful protest saw hundreds of people practicing their First Amendment rights up and down Raymond Avenue. The Pasadena Unified School District superintendent said that the COVID-19 crisis has further exposed the deep divide in our country along racial and socioeconomic lines. “Enough is enough. It is time for us as a community and as a country and make meaningful and impact-
ful change. The solutions rest with us individually and collectively,” said Brian McDonald in an email to the community. With all the protests, the majority of which are peaceful expressions of sadness and using First Amendment
rights, authorities have attempted early curfews in many cities, some as early as 1 p.m. in Santa Monica and 6 p.m. in Los Angeles County. On Tuesday, the Mayor of Monrovia and Councilman Larry Spicer joined the large and vocal protest at Monrovia
Library Park. In a show of peace, Monrovia Police Chief Alan Sanvictores and a couple of other Monrovia PD officers took a knee in solidarity with the protesters as they chanted and passersby honked their horns. There were a few agitators at the park Tuesday afternoon including one man who wore a “Keep America Great” hat and carried a sign that demanded Governor Newsom’s resignation as well as to “Open up America.” Another disgruntled elderly gentleman walked up to some young people in the park saying they didn’t know what they were doing and was visibly angry. Police officers kept a very low profile and could be heard interacting with the throngs to ensure there was no threat. The protests locally and nationally have grown in numbers but more peaceful as the days continue. According to officials from across the United States, there seems to be a huge difference in the daytime protests and nighttime looting which peaceful protesters admonish.

The proposed assessments for the District will provide a funding source to partially support the ongoing annual expenses to maintain service and operate public street lighting improvements that provide special benefits to properties in the District. The City Council hereby declares its intention to conduct a public hearing concerning the levy and collection of assessments within the District for Fiscal Year 2020-21 in accordance with the 1972 Act and California Constitution, Article XIIID, Section 4.
