O
pening up the United States after months of a deadly pandemic altered our lives forever will be a bit like reinventing the wheel. On Monday, Pasadena council had discussions on the viability of the reopening process, effects and consequences in light of the staggering number of unemployment claims filed in the country since mid-March — 30 million. Some businesses can start reopening Friday, according to the governor, if new physicaldistancing measures are implemented, among other things. But it’s perhaps easier said than done. “As early as the end of this week, you will have the capacity as a retailer to begin to reopen for pickup: clothing, bookstores, music shops, sporting goods, florists — with Mother’s Day coming up — and other sectors within that retail sector,” Newsom said. Not everyone agrees with the so called fast track to reopening. In fact, on Tuesday afternoon Los Angeles County health officials warned of the dangers involved if we rush to reopen. Citing 1,313 deaths and 27,815 cases in the county, Dr. Barbara Ferrer, director of L.A. County Public Health, said we still need to be vigilant and maintain social distancing as much as possible. Factors related to certain businesses and recreational spaces re-opening in the county were released on Wednesday. In Michigan, last week, the intimidating side of hate and defiance showed its ugly head at
the state’s capitol where some people openly carried high power rifles, wore swastikas and carried Confederate flags. The images were alarming and garnered international attention. Statewide, however, Governor Newsom appears to be listening to public health experts as well as frustrated citizens. On Monday some of the beach restrictions were rescinded, particularly in Orange County, where massive protests have highlighted the frustration of the stay at home orders for some. In recent weeks, especially in Orange County, there have been multiple protests against the lockdown orders and in Huntington Beach there were 4,000 protesters, many of whom did not adhere to social distancing nor don any face coverings. It seems that defiance is very much on the minds of some business owners and residents alike. In San Clemente a privately owned restaurant defied state and county orders and opened up over the weekend as did a local gym in Victorville. Some say this is just the tip of the iceberg which is rapidly melting under the incendiary heat of the stay at home orders. A security guard was shot and killed at a Family Dollar store in Pennsylvania Friday when he told a woman to wear the sate-mandated face mask within the store. Two men allegedly approached the security guard and one shot him in the head as one yelled at the guard about “disrespecting his wife.”

City of Arcadia & Methodist Hospital to Host Virtual Public Health Town Hall The City of Arcadia and Methodist Hospital are joining together to host a virtual public health town hall on Thursday, May 14, 2020 at 6 p.m. The city and hospital are actively engaged in coordinating a unified response to the coronavirus (COVID19) pandemic. As more is learned about COVID-19 and the disease’s progression and impact on the community, city leaders and public health practitioners want to share lessons learned, best practices, and the latest scientific data to inform the community on effective COVID-19 transmission mitigation strategies. “The virtual public health town hall is part of the city’s effort to prepare the community for the next stage in our efforts to slow the spread of COVID-19,” said City Manager Dominic Lazzaretto. “As we look toward the eventual lifting of stay at home orders, we want to be sure that our community is prepared, and the city is taking an active role in supporting that effort. n a COVID-19 world, essential business operations and “Safer at Home” orders have forced immediate retooling of business operations, and communication technologies are critical success factors for revamped operations. MADIA Tech Launch (madiatech.org) has risen to the challenge of maintaining its mission to support technology entrepreneurs by converting its education and networking events to online meetings, and helping others to learn techno-centric communication strategies. Several meetings of this nonprofit organization have been scheduled recently to demonstrate tech-savvy innovation and good practices. On April 7, marketing 101 for tech companies was the topic of MADIA’s first virtual meetup. Jeanette DePatie, the “Top Beanie” at Propellerhead Inc (propellerhead-inc. com) explained to the entre-
preneurial audience that how you tell your story will determine whether people will buy your idea or product, either as an investor or a customer. She shared some specific communication tools, especially relevant for online meetings, to improve anyone’s “pitch for profit.” DePatie demonstrated how to personalize, analogize, and prioritize key concepts to convert ideas to funded realities. MADIA Tech Launch has two more meetings scheduled in May that the community can attend online. On May 13, the organization’s regular monthly meetup, now a 7 p.m. webcast, will feature Dr. Naresh Menon, founder and CEO of Covisus Inc. (covisus.com) who will discuss "Building a Business to Enable Total Supply Chain Traceability.” Covisus has developed advanced technology to secure the safety of supply chains to meet regulatory and consumer needs for trust in product source and quality. Tournament of Roses Announces $100K in COVID-19 Relief Funding will support Pasadena food agencies affiliated with the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank The Pasadena Tournament of Roses has announced a $100,000 donation in support of local COVID-19 relief efforts in the Pasadena community. All funds will go to the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank (LARFB), the largest food provider and distributor to food banks and pantries across the County of Los Angeles. Specifically, the Tournament’s donation will be used to support the nine Pasadena food providers affiliated with the Food Bank. Working through their local providers, the Food Bank is able to provide four meals for every $1 donated. The Pasadena partner agencies provide food to anyone in need and include Foothill Unity Center, Friends In Deed, The Salvation Army and others. “We assessed how we could best assist with local

relief efforts and it became clear that food insecurity was one of the most critical needs,” said Tournament of Roses Executive Director/ CEO David Eads. “To maximize our impact and feed our most vulnerable neighbors, we decided to direct our funds to the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank.”
This contribution is a combination of funds from the Tournament of Roses Association, the Tournament of Roses Foundation, individual members of the Tournament of Roses, Foundation Board Members and the organization’s staff. “We are fortunate to have a strong network of partners in Pasadena,”
said Los Angeles Regional Food Bank President & CEO Michael Flood. “This generous gift from the Tournament of Roses and Tournament of Roses Foundation will help us meet the increased demands of this moment and ensure that food is getting to the most vulnerable in the community.” The Tournament of Roses also recently began providing lunches to Huntington Hospital nurses staffing the drive-through COVID-19 testing site at the Rose Bowl Stadium and has committed to delivering lunches for five to seven weeks, or as needed. Last week, 2021 Tournament of Roses President Bob Miller surprised each nurse with a bouquet of roses, which they will receive weekly courtesy of Vons and Passion Roses.
L.A. County Parks Locations Closed Mother's Day The Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation (L.A. County Parks) will close all botanic gardens, lakes, and local, community and regional parks to the public on Sunday, May 10, in an effort to prevent the spread of COVID-19. An anticipated influx of visitors to parks on the holiday would make it impossible for the public to adhere to the County's "Safer at Home" Order, which requires six feet of physical distance and prohibits group gatherings. “Mother’s Day is one of our busiest days of the year, which means physical distancing would be very difficult. To ensure the health and safety of our park guests, team members, and community, we will close all LA County Parks locations on Sunday, May 10,” said Norma E. García, acting director of L.A. County Parks. Open and free for the public is L.A. County Parks "Parks From Home” a virtual recreation center that launched on April 22, to provide free access to fitness and instructional classes for the public to

O
ne of the largest national issues in this pandemic has been the startling number of deaths at nursing homes directly attributed to COVID-19 within the United States. On Monday, Vice Mayor Tyron Hampton asked the city to investigate the local response in long-term health care facilities but as City Manager Steve Mermell pointed out, the city has no jurisdiction over these facilities.
During a Zoom meeting, council members heard that long-term care facilities fall under the state of California’s jurisdiction, according to Mermell. As a result of figures released last week, the National Guard was called into at least one long-term care facility to help with the overburdened staff. One facility in Pasadena recorded over 14 deaths from COVID-19. The majority of deaths within the city have been connected to long-term care facilities. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), given their congregate nature and
resident population served (e.g., older adults, often with underlying chronic medical conditions), nursing home populations are at the highest risk of being affected by COVID-19. If infected with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, residents are at increased risk of serious illness. As May is Mental Health Awareness Month, the Arcadia Unified School Districts (AUSD) has decided to launch Mental Health Mondays. Each Monday, for the remainder of the school year, AUSD will provide mental health resources to help support everyone navigating the coronavirus pandemic and school closures simultaneously. In addition to helping support students, these resources are also available to AUSD parents, staff, and community. The first two resources AUSD is providing are “10 Self-Care Strategies for Teens” and “Teen Guide to Mental Health and Wellness.” The graphics include techniques and strategies for anxiety and depression, websites and apps to help with coping, and hotlines that can be utilized to seek further assistance if needed. In a message to parents district officials encouraged solidarity in these difficult times. “Please know that you

are not alone. We are here for you, and please continue to be there for each other. If you need someone to talk with about how you are feeling, please reach out to a friend, family member, AUSD teacher, AUSD staff, AUSD counselor or administrator, or utilize one of the resources provided. PASADENA MUSEUM OF HISTORY’S BLACK HISTORY COLLECTION NOW AVAILABLE ONLINE Project is part of USC’S award-winning L.A. as subject community histories digitization project The Black History Collection, one of more than 250 special collections in the Archives at Pasadena Museum of History (PMH), is part of a generous digitization grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities as part of the University of Southern California’s L.A. as Subject Community Histories Digitization Project. The overall project involves digitization of approximately 17,000 items, including paper materials, historic photographs, video recordings, and other unique items from collections held by six community archives in the L.A. as Subject research alliance. The project will add to the visibility of collections that document underrepresented community histories. PMH’s Black History Collection is comprised of photographs, letters, family records, property deeds, and other materials revealing the history of the African American community in

Pasadena. The collection was a result of a documentary, “Changing Rose,” created by PMH in 1984. Robin Kelley, an American historian, interviewed black community members and collected photographs and memorabilia for the documentary, which make up the bulk of the collection. Many of these materials date from the early 20th century, and shed light on a less-visible
period in African American life prior to the second Great Migration. The collection tells the stories and struggles of black citizens who either migrated to or grew up in Pasadena.

Unlike younger workers with many years ahead of earning and saving, investors who are retired or nearing retirement have less time to wait out their losses. But there are still actions they can take to help secure their finances, even during periods of uncertainty like we’re experiencing today. If this situation applies to you, here are a few steps to consider in this new environment: If you are approaching retirement: 1. Pick your retirement date. If you haven’t already, take time now to decide the year and month when you (and potentially your spouse or partner) want to retire. Given the current environment, you may want to consider extending your time in the workforce — whether it’s continuing your current career or moving into a new full or part-time role. Either
way, your answer can have a big impact on your investment decisions from this point forward. 2. Ensure your investments are diversified. Not all sectors of the economy are alike, and they react to news and events differently. For those nearing retirement, the recent spike in volatility is a reminder of how having a broadly diversified portfolio can help reduce your investing risk. Instead of simply selling your stocks in attempt to cut your losses, review your portfolio to see if it is properly balanced between stocks, bonds, and cash that align with your goals, time horizon and your ability to manage risk. While a diversified portfolio can’t guarantee profits or protect against all losses, it can greatly reduce the impact of volatility. 3. Balance your need for protection with growth. Protecting your portfolio from market downturns becomes more important as you approach the day when you start living off your savings. During this time, you may want to consider investing the money you plan to use for income in the first few years of retirement more conservatively in liquid vehicles that are easy to access. This can help give you peace of mind that you are prepared to handle upcoming expenses no matter what’s happening in the markets. If you are currently in retirement: 1. Review your withdrawal strategy. If the recent decrease in the value of your portfolio makes you nervous, revisit the amount of money you
withdraw monthly to meet your expenses. As you review, the goal is to be assured that the amount you withdraw to meet the next year or two of expenses does not put your long-term financial security in jeopardy. If your base of assets is reduced, you may have to trim your withdrawal amount to assure you have a sustainable long-term income strategy. 2. Don’t take unnecessary chances in your stock exposure. For the long-term investor — which may include you as a retiree — volatility in equities can work in your favor. It’s possible that you will spend one to three decades in retirement, giving you time to withstand some market moves. ARCADIA April 26 At 11:34 a.m., the Arcadia Police Department received an electronically submitted police report of a package theft that occurred in the 2200 block of South Santa Anita Avenue. Surveillance footage captured the suspect jumping over the victim’s front gate and stealing her package. The suspect then opened the package, took the stolen property, and left the box. The suspect is described as a “young, white male.” At 3:25 p.m., an officer noticed broken glass outside the entrance to One West Bank, located at 1 E. Foothill Blvd. Surveillance footage revealed a lone male suspect was walking by the entrance when the front glass door shattered. It does not appear that the suspect entered the business or stole any property. April 27 At 6:16 p.m., an officer responded to Cabrera’s Restaurant, located at 625 E. Live Oak Ave., regarding a theft and aggravated assault that had just occurred. After receiving free chips and salsa earlier, the suspect returned to the restaurant, stole three beers, and, when confronted by an employee, the suspect hit the employee on the head with a glass bottle. The assault resulted in a laceration to the victim’s forehead. The suspect fled on foot to the horse trail. He is described as a Hispanic male, approximately 5 feet 9 inches tall, about 250 pounds. At 9:59 p.m., an officer responded to a disturbance between a driver and a pedestrian in the 400 block of Fairview Avenue. As the driver drove into a shared residential driveway, the pedestrian, in fear that the vehicle was going to hit him, punched a closed window of the vehicle, and then thrust a knife through the driver’s open window. The driver was not injured. Through an investigation, the officer located the suspect, and the 55-year-old male pedestrian from Arcadia was arrested .

No loss was reported. At 5:07 a.m., officers responded to an alley in the 100 block of Alta Street regarding a subject yelling and breaking glass. As the officer arrived on scene, he witnessed a subject running north, noticed fresh pry marks on security bars to Sphinx Mart, and located a large crowbar nearby. Assisting officers helped locate two juvenile subjects. One of the subjects, a 16-year-old male from Arcadia, admitted to vandalizing the location. An investigation revealed the second subject, a 15-year-old male from Monrovia, was likely the lookout. Both juveniles were detained, and then released to the custody of their parents pending formal charges by the L.A. County District Attorney’s Office. April 29 At 10:22 a.m., an officer responded to the 00 block of Cornell Drive regarding a petty theft investigation. Sometime during the previous night, unknown suspect(s) stole the victim’s catalytic converter from his Honda Element. There was no suspect information at the time of the report. At 3:05 p.m., an officer responded to Arcadia Mental Health, located at 330 E. Live Oak Ave., regarding a theft from motor vehicle incident. An investigation revealed the suspect, who had checked into the facility as a parolee just moments earlier, exited the building, then unlawfully entered the victim’s vehicle, and stole various camping items and shoes. The suspect fled as the victim attempted to approach him. He has been identified as a 40-year-old male from Glendora. Further efforts are underway to locate this male suspect and arrest him. April 30

The victims, S Sanders Company, mailed a check to the intended recipient then discovered the check had been stolen, altered, and issued to a different name. May 1 At 3:16 p.m., an officer received a telephonic report of a vandalism that occurred at West Coast Elite Gymnastics, located at 900 S. Santa Anita Ave. An investigation revealed unknown suspect(s) scratched marks on the north and west doors, and it appeared as if the suspect(s) also threw a rock at one of the doors. There is no suspect information as of the time of this report. At 4:05 p.m., an officer took a telephonic report of mailbox tampering from the 1000 block of Arcadia Avenue. Sometime during the previous 24 hours, unknown suspect(s) tampered with the community mailboxes and the reporting party could not confirm if mail had been stolen. No other victims came forward. There is no suspect information as of the time of this report. May 2 At 10:14 a.m., an officer responded to a residence in the 100 block of East Longden Avenue regarding a burglary investigation. The officer determined an unidentified suspect likely entered the residence through an unlocked gate, and then an unlocked side garage door. The suspect(s) fled with a television and miscellaneous power tools. There is no suspect information as of the time of this report. At 7:25 p.m., officers responded to Vons, located at 745 W. Naomi Ave., regarding a welfare check of a male who appeared to be passed out inside his vehicle. Upon contacting the driver, the officer

detected a strong odor of alcohol emitting from his person. The driver consented to a Preliminary Alcohol Screening Device test and the results indicated he had a blood alcohol content level of 0.191%. The 26-year-old male from Panorama City was arrested .

At 8:05 a.m., a resident in the 400 block of East Almond called to report that his vehicle had been stolen sometime between 7 p.m. on April 25 and 7 a.m. on April 26. The vehicle is a 1990 Honda Civic and it was taken from the street in front of his residence.
April 23 At 3:16 p.m., a resident in the 400 block of Prospect reported vandalism to her vehicle. Someone shattered one of the windows on her car. The suspect did not enter the vehicle or take anything. April 24 At 7:58 a.m., a resident in the 200 block of Linwood called police to report that his detached garage was broken into sometime during the night. An unknown suspect cut a locking mechanism and made entry into the garage, then stole several tools and a toilet. At 6:12 p.m., a residential burglary was reported in the 400 block of West Colorado. The resident called police and reported that sometime between April 20 and 24, someone gained entry into the rear house, which is under construction, and took three cell phones and a laptop computer.
At 1:41 p.m., a resident from the 800 block of West Huntington called to report that her adult son had just been hit in the head by a neighbor with a baseball bat. The victim was taken to a nearby hospital with a laceration and contusion to his head. The suspect responded to Monrovia Police Department to turn himself in. April 27 At 5:18 a.m., an officer was patrolling the area of Myrtle and Duarte when he was flagged down regarding a vehicle burglary that occurred at a residence in the 600 block of West Duarte. The theft occurred sometime during the night in the carport area of the apartment complex. A backpack containing personal identification was taken.
April 25 At 8:19 a.m., an officer was patrolling the 200 block of West Huntington when he observed a motorist commit a vehicle code violation. He attempted a traffic stop and the vehicle fled at a high rate of speed. The officer went in pursuit of the motorist. A short time later the officer canceled his pursuit because he had the necessary information to identify the driver. A followup investigation lead to the location of the driver at his home. The driver was arrested for the vehicle code violations and for felony evading. The vehicle was impounded per the California Vehicle Code. April 26 At 3:38 a.m., an officer saw a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed on Huntington near the 210 east-

A customer who was inside the store became involved in an argument with a subject who was upset because the customer looked at him. The subject followed the customer outside the store into the parking lot. The customer was getting in his vehicle to leave, and the suspect punched the hood of the victim's vehicle, causing a dent. The suspect was detained by officers and after further investigation he was arrested for misdemeanor vandalism. At 3:58 p.m., a resident in the 200 block of Stedman called to report that sometime during the night someone removed the catalytic converter from his vehicle. Investigation
is continuing. At 6:49 p.m., an employee from a business in the 400 block of West Huntington called police to report a theft that just occurred. A female suspect entered the store without wearing a mask. When they advised her about the mask requirement, she walked out of the store with merchandise and did not pay for it. Officers responded and searched the area, but did not locate the suspect. April 28 At 8:18 a.m., a resident in the 200 block of West Lime called to report that someone entered her unlocked vehicle and took costume jewelry and shoes. At 10:50 a.m., a resident in the 400 block of West Walnut called to report that his work vehicle was taken sometime during the early morning hours. The vehicle was parked in front of his home. The vehicle was entered into the law enforcement stolen vehicle system. At 3:41 p.m., a resident in the 1700 block of Leafwood called to report someone removed her Ring doorbell camera from her front door. The suspect also tried stealing a package, but was confronted by the homeowner. The suspect fled the area. At 3:42 p.m., a vehicle was reported stolen from the 800 block of West Walnut. The victim reported that his tan, Nissan 720 King Cab truck was taken sometime during the night. April 29 At 9:47 a.m., an employee from a business in the 1600 block of South Mountain called police to report a suspect that concealed merchandise while inside the store and left without paying for the items. The suspect was detained by officers and arrested. At 3:28 p.m., a resident in the 100 block of Encinitas called police to report a suspicious vehicle that had been parked in the area for several days. A computer check revealed the vehicle was reported stolen out of West Covina.

County News LASD Budget Underfunded by $400M During a press conference Monday, Sheriff Alex Villanueva announced that the 2020-21 budget proposed by the Board of Supervisors leaves a $400 million gap for the sheriff’s department. To shrink the department’s deficits, Villanueva proposed cuts to academy classes, patrol divisions and homeless outreach services. As a result, the Altadena and Marina del Rey Sheriff’s Stations will be closed July 1 to garner a combined savings of $12.2 million. Other cuts include the elimination of the Parks Bureau and the Community Partnership Bureau (COPS). COPS teams provide supplemental services to residences in unincorporated areas. El Monte News Arroyo High School Principal to Retire after 35 Years at El Monte Union Arroyo High School Principal Angelita Gonzales, who has been the top administrator at the school since 2013 and an educator at El Monte Union for over 35 years, will retire in June. Gonzales became Arroyo’s assistant principal of instruction in 2006, a position she held until 2012, when she was named principal of South El Monte High. She later returned to Arroyo as principal. Under Gonzales’ leadership, Arroyo was recognized as a Gold Ribbon School for its visual and performing arts program in 2017 and received a Golden Oak Award from the California PTA. She
has overseen the implementation of such programs as the College Board’s pre-Advanced Placement program, the student-run Regenerative Learning Garden and an award-winning culinary arts program. Monterey Park News LASD Homicide Assisting Monterey Park PD With Stabbing Death Investigation Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau detectives responded to the 1700 block of Alisar Avenue, Monterey Park, at approximately 10:43 a.m. on Tuesday to investigate the circumstances surrounding the stabbing death of a female adult. The female was pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation is ongoing and there is no additional information available at this time. The funding is part of $8 million approved under the plan for community relief efforts to help seniors, family and youth as well as those living in homelessness as needed.

SAN BERNARDINO San Bernardino County News Board of Supervisors Discusses Plans for Phase 2 Business Reopening The San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors has discussed a preliminary plan for reopening sectors of the County’s businesses as early as this Friday. The Board plans to solidify its plan this week. The discussion about reopening followed an announcement by the governor that “low-risk” sectors could reopen as part of Phase 2 of the state’s COVID-19 mitigation policy. s the state continues implementation of the four-stage framework to allow Californians to gradually reopen some lowerrisk businesses and public spaces while continuing to preserve public health, Governor Gavin Newsom Monday announced that based on the state’s progress in meeting metrics tied to indicators, the state can begin to move into Stage 2 of modifying the stay at home order this Friday, May 8, with guidelines released Thursday, May 7. The governor released a Report Card showing how the state has made progress in fighting COVID-19 in a number of categories such as stabilized hospitalization and ICU numbers and acquiring PPE. “Millions of Californians answered the call to stay home and thanks to them, we are in a position to begin moving into our next stage of modifying our stay at home order,” said Newsom. “But make no mistake — this virus isn’t gone. It’s still dangerous and poses a significant public health risk. As we move

The COVID-19 outbreak has frozen one of the world’s most powerful economies and suspended the fate of many business owners worldwide. During these uncertain times, many small businesses are searching for any method or reason to stay open, and in Arcadia, some have gone to great lengths to do so. Nationwide, the workforce unfortunate enough to be deemed “non-essential” is biding their time and waiting to see how things will change in the future, and reconstruct the economy. Locally, this has turned popular Arcadian attractions into hollow structures resembling ghost towns. Located in the center of Santa Anita Westfield Mall is a restaurant called California Pizza Kitchen (CPK). CPK is open for take-out, but the restaurant is located deep within the mall complex, and delivery drivers must follow the signs for the fastest access route. The shift manager at CPK says she thinks Cheesecake Factory is open on the other side, but she is not sure.(Cheesecake Factory is open for pickup and delivery.) Many restaurants have stayed open to offer take-out, or accommodating a higher demand to the essential workforce. Sushi Kiyosuzu owners had their daughter, Arcadian Olympic athlete Mirai Nagasu, working in the restaurant for a period of time. Sushi Kiyosuzu has partnered with D.C.-based nonprofit organization Power or 10 to help fund the restaurant and provide meals for the essential workforce. Rod’s Grill has placed signs out front letting people know that they are open for business. Owner Manny Romero personally thanks all of his patrons for their support when they pick up their food. Over on First Street, next to the Gold Line platform, the long-awaited GoKi Café was just weeks away from opening and now remains unchanged with no word on whether or not it will actually open. MENTAL HEALTH ADVICE WITH STAN: DEALING WITH THE STRESS OF TRANSFERRING FROM HIGH SCHOOL TO COLLEGE

re you a senior in high school and plan on going to college in the near future? If so, this can cause a great deal of fear of anxiety during this time of transition. As a result, here are six tips on how to manage the anxieties of transferring from high school to college. 1. Determine your goals and interests It is important to have an idea of what you want out of your life after you graduate from high school. Talk to a career counselor to get an idea of what your options may be and do what is best for you. Remember that going to college is not for everyone. 2. Choose the right college If you decide to go to college, it is important that you pick a college that you will be comfortable attending. Some people may not do well going to
a large campus and may decide to go to a smaller school. Decide which college will best suite your needs rather than trying to impress others. 3. Talk to the students on campus If possible, make a few trips to the college you want to go to in order to find out what it will be like when you go to school there. Ask a lot of questions and make sure that you know what to expect before classes begin. 4. Visit your school’s mental health counseling department Many students deal with anxiety, depression, loneliness, and other mental health issues during their time in college. Instead of waiting until you feel anxious, get to know the people at your school’s mental health counseling department —virtually if possible — before school starts. This way, you will know who to talk to if you struggle with your mental health. 5. Be open-minded It is said that college is the
time to discover who you are and what you want to do with your life. Do not be afraid if things do not work out according to your plans. You always have the choice to change schools or to do something else that will help accomplish your goals. 6. Do what is best for you Do not let your family and friends pressure you into doing something that you feel uncomfortable with. You have to do what is best for you. Focus on your career goals and interests rather than trying to please others. You will be better off in the long run. iving through a disaster is hard. Really, this is an understatement. It's more than hard. I grew up in a place where natural disasters are the norm. I grew up in a suburb of Oklahoma City. You would have never heard of it, except for the natural disasters (and one famous country music singer). It's called Moore. You probably saw it on the news in 1999 and 2013 when F5 tornadoes destroyed much of the city. It was devastating. Homes and businesses were destroyed. And, sadly, lives were lost. The special thing about Moore is just how resilient it is. Every time a tornado wipes the ground clean, people rebuild. They continue to have excellent public schools. It's safe. The economy is doing well. If another city had been hit with the level of devastation Moore has, people would have packed up and moved by now. They would have had enough of the disasters and the drama and the heartbreak. In Moore, the people come together in a way that doesn't exist everywhere. They're a true community. They support one another. They know that in order to get through disasters, they have to do it together. And, they have lots of practice.

I don't live in Moore anymore. But, after COVID-19 hit, one of the first people I saw was a friend from Moore. Although I hadn't seen him in over 20 years, he personally drove a face mask to my home when I didn't have one. He knew, as the community in Moore knows, that in order to get through this, we have to do it together. When you go to work every day, I hope you'll keep this in mind. We are all facing unique challenges. Some people are caring for small children. Others are trying to help their aging parents. And some are selfisolating completely alone. None of these different scenarios are easy. As businesses, we're only going to make it through this in one piece if we do it together. We've got to pick up the slack for our colleagues when they can't. Everyone matters. This isn't the time to judge harshly or to compete with one
another. People have different levels of support or flexibility at home. No one was planning ahead for how to weather such a storm. Not everyone has a nanny who can take care of their children during the day. Not every older person has adult children nearby who can help. And, not every single person has loved ones nearby. Every scenario is creating stress and strain. The only answer is to work together. It's not the time to make a fuss over little things. It's not the time to feel guilty when you aren't perfect. It's the time to step forward with empathy and compassion, both for our colleagues and for ourselves. We are all struggling. And, that's okay — as long as we stick together. NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the City of Arcadia proposes to amend to its Statement of Objectives and Projects for use of Community Development Block Grant (“CDBG”) funds for fiscal year 2019-20 to utilize new CARES Act funding and previously unallocated CDBG funding for a new small business grants program (the “Amendment”). The publication of this notice is the beginning of the 5-day public review period required under Federal Regulations at 24 CFR 91.105 and Federal Regulations waivers due to the COVID-19 crisis. The public review and written comment period begins May 7, 2020 and runs through May 12, 2020. BACKGROUND: On March 27, 2020 the United States Congress passed The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (“CARES”) Act. The bill provided $5 billion for CDBG to rapidly respond to COVID-19 and the economic and housing impacts caused by it. The City of Arcadia will receive $180,088 in Community Development Block Grant – Coronavirus (CDBG–CV) funding. Additionally, $65,912 in existing, carry-over CDBG funding from previous fiscal years is available and proposed to be allocated as described below. As part of the CARES Act, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has streamlined the public noticing and review process for CDBG Amendments. The standard thirty (30) day public comment period and requirement for a public hearing before the governing body (city council) has been reduced to a five (5) day public comment period with no public hearing required to approve the Amendment. PROPOSED AMENDMENT: The City of Arcadia is proposing to allocate new CARES Act CDBG-CV funding, and existing unallocated carry-over CDBG funding, for a new small business grants program in the amount of up to $5,000 to businesses for the purpose of retaining or hiring/rehiring employees classified as low-tomoderate income (i.e. less than 80% of the median income for Los Angeles County).
