asadena approved over $1.3 million in coordinated homelessness services contracts over the next two years using its entire share of Measure H funding for that period, despite contributing about $7 million per year to the county coffers through the measure. Measure H is a county-wide quarter-cent tax approved by voters in 2017 to combat the homelessness crisis over the next 10 years. The county administers those tax dollars on a pro rata basis based on percentage of the homeless population in each Service Planning Area. Pasadena will use its share to fund four homelessness initiatives identified by the county — homelessness prevention, rapid re-housing, coordinated entry, and emergency sheltering. However, the city would have liked to have been able to receive a block grant of funds and greater oversight over which initiatives were funded based on local need. “The initiatives don’t include our highest priorities,” Housing Director William Huang said when the funds were approved last October. “Because [the county] did not take into consideration our need or costs, there are some strategies we’ve had to decline,” Huang said,

On Nov. 4, 2008 the voters in Pasadena passed a $350 million Measure TT bond initiative “to repair and upgrade Pasadena Unified School District’s (PUSD) aging and deteriorating campuses.” Measure TT objectives included: 1.Make all school campuses safe, secure, and accessible. 2.Provide equal access to high-quality learning and recreational facilities. 3.Enhance student and teacher access to technology. 4.Use green technology for healthy and efficient buildings. 5.Ensure strict independent oversight and accountability. And with most campuses between 50-70 years old: 6. Travelling Down History With ‘The Green Book’ Susie LING & Roy NAKANO GUEST CONTRIBUTOR The movie “Green Book” recently won a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture. The real “Green Book,” however, was a project of Victor H. Green, a postal worker in Harlem. Like Martin Luther King did years later, Victor Green pursued a dream, but for the travelling African-American motorists. The first “Green Book” in 1936 listed service stations, restaurants, lodging, and barber shops in New York that would welcome an African-American clientele. This was a great service for newcomers to the city in an era when racial segregation was common across the nation. Mr. Green expanded his

listings yearly. He explains in the 25-cent 1940 “The Negro Motorist Green Book,” ”The white traveler for years has had no difficulty in getting accommodations, but with the Negro it has been different. Before the advent of Negro Travel Guides, he has had to depend on word of mouth and then sometimes accommodations weren’t available.” By the 1963-64 edition, the title evolved to “The Travelers’ Green Book, for vacation without aggravation.” Perhaps after Dr. Martin Luther King’s 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, the nation had turned a page and the need for “The Green Book” lessened. t the City Council meeting on Jan. 8, 2019 the City Council approved a non-binding term sheet which would allow the City of Sierra Madre and the City of Arcadia to explore a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for fire response services. Since the meeting took place the city has received several inquiries and questions about what was voted on and approved. City Manager Gabriel Engeland said that the city has a fire department and is continuing its work towards becoming a career department with all full-time, paid personnel. Sierra Madre is having an engineer’s exam this month and will be able to

hire two additional full-time engineers. This is important as these hires will complete the transition to a career department and Sierra Madre will be staffed similarly to the majority of stations in the Verdugo system. Once Sierra Madre Fire Department (SMFD) is fully staffed, the city intends to once again ask the Verdugo system to allow Sierra Madre to participate in automatic aid, similar to peer fire organizations. The goal of this council, and previous councils for the past decade, has been to participate in automatic aid in the Verdugo system. Over the past two budget cycles this council has invested in the fire department and hired six full time fire medics and budgeted for three full-time engineers. At the time the decision was made to move to a career

department, with full time fire employees. There were a total 61 full-time employees in the entire city. The addition of nine new full-time positions, bringing the total full-time positions to 70, represented a great increase in cost as well as a large increase by percentage of full-time positions in the city. This council has remained committed to

improving public safety and the cost of the investment to transition from a volunteer department to a career department has not lessened this commitment. This council continues to invest an overwhelming portion of the limited resources available into public safety. The discussion for this council, as evidenced

by their actions, has not been about cost, but about safety. Sierra Madre must become a participating member in automatic aid. Automatic aid will provide a greater opportunity to provide public safety resources to Sierra Madre. The council approved a non-binding term sheet with Arcadia, which allows staff to explore an MOU between the two cities for fire response services. “The decision made by the City Council on Jan. 8, 2019 opens the door for discussion; it is not the final step in the process.” The term sheet outlines broad areas of service which need to be approved or agreed upon to be included in the MOU. Monrovia Historical Museum hosts event in honor of Robert Kennard on Jan. 20. – Courtesy photo / Facebook @monroviahistoricalmuseum

Monrovia Historical Museum Presents ‘Robert Kennard – Architect And Mentor’ In honor of Martin Luther King Day, the Monrovia Historical Museum will be hosting a program on Monrovia’s own Robert Kennard, founder of the oldest AfricanAmerican architecture firm in Los Angeles. The event entitled “Robert Kennard – Architect and Mentor” will be presented by three individuals: Jerome Robinson, a USC graduate student, who wrote his master’s thesis on Kennard, Gail Kennard, Kennard’s daughter, and President of the Kennard Design Group; and Ralph Walker, KGEM newscaster. The speakers will talk about Kennard’s childhood in

Monrovia and his struggle to find his first architecture job. A World War II and Korean War veteran, Kennard attended USC’s School of Architecture on the GI Bill. In 1957, he founded the Kennard Design Group, which provided architecture and planning services, and overcame struggles to become one of the largest and oldest African-American architectural firms west of the Mississippi River. The event will take place on Sunday, Jan. 20, 2019, at 1 p.m. at the Monrovia Historical Museum. The address is 742 E. Lemon Ave. Admission is free.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (Public Health) and the City of Pasadena Public Health Department (PPHD) identify more locations for possible measles exposure. This is the same measles case previously announced. The individual visited the cities of Malibu, Santa Monica and Pasadena while infectious between Dec. 26 and Dec. 29. This person visited the following venues at the following times:

- Santa Monica Pier and the Blue Plate Taco restaurant (1515 Ocean Ave., Santa Monica) on Dec. 26 from 1:30 - 8 p.m. - Ralphs (3601 E. Foothill Blvd., Pasadena) and Nordstrom Rack Hastings Village (3363 E. Foothill Blvd., Pasadena) on Dec. 28 from 11:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. - Paradise Cove Beach Café in the city of Malibu on Dec. 29, 2018 from 12:30 - 5 p.m. No current risk related to measles exists at these

venues at this time as the period of possible exposure ended more than a week ago. In addition, because measles is spread from person-to-person by the respiratory route, there is no risk present related to food that may have been consumed at these locations. Arcadia Artist Vies for the Grand Prize in the ‘Illustrators of the Future’ Competition May s. ruiz MayChu@att.net

Q

ianjiao Ma is a long way from her birthplace in Northern China,

but is very much at home in her adopted city of Arcadia. She is one of twelve ‘Illustrators of the Future’ winners to be honored during the 35th Annual L. Ron Hubbard Achievement Awards at the Taglyan Complex on Friday, April 5, 2019. The highlight of the ceremony will be the announcement of the year’s two Grand Prize winners – a writer and an illustrator – who will each receive $5,000. Their winning stories and illustrations will appear in the annual anthology ‘L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers and Illustrators of the Future’ Volume 35.

An international competition, ‘Illustrators of the Future’ is considered the most enduring and influential contest in the field of science fiction and fantasy. Artists worldwide participate in this competition and they are judged by professional artists, some of whom are masters in the genre. To get to the heart of how Ma arrived at this momentous stage in her chosen profession, it helps to know what drives this determined young woman. “I was born in Shenyang in Northern China,” begins Ma. “In my senior year in high school I went to Beijing to investigate what school I could go to and get training. My mom then asked me if I wanted to study abroad. It was an exciting prospect as I discovered that Beijing was vastly different from the city where I came from and it

made me realize that I really wanted to see the world.” Ma attended ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena from 2012 to 2016 and held freelance posts and various internships at the same time. She describes, “I interned for BRC Imagination and was one of the artists involved in the 2015 redesign of the ‘Rock and Rock Hall of Fame Museum’ in Cleveland. “After graduating, I worked as a comic book illustrator at Stela Unlimited, which is an app for smart phones. I was the background concept artist for a graphic novel called Lumi White, a remake of Snow White. “My second job was at Steadman Design Studios which creates immersive entertainment experiences for theme parks, attractions, exhibits and shows. Then I joined Inkwell Group, where

I had the chance to work on museum, restaurant, casino, and theme park design including Warner Brothers Abu Dhabi, the largest indoor amusement park in the world. “A year later, an acquaintance of mine at a company called ShadowMachine approached me to do animation design. I started working at ShadowMachine in February of 2018.” Last year, Ma found out about the ‘Illustrators of the Future’ worldwide contest and right away she sent three entries – Ruins, Apocalyptic World, and Space Ship Inter(ior Design). After winning the quarterly competition, she was paired up with a writer whose book she illustrated. On April 5, she’ll find out if her already burgeoning career will also be catapulted into another world.

o you remember how you first learned about Martin Luther King Jr.? There are people in history that we rather forget about sometimes, but MLK is not one of them. In fact his spirit, message and methods have not become outdated in today’s society but rather have risen to more prominence than ever before. People in our local communities continue to fulfill King’s legacy by striving in working fields where there are only a handful of African-Americans and are paving the way for local diversity. Jackie Broxton is considered a pioneer in the field of fundraising for African-American women in Pasadena. She has an

intensive resume of accomplishments in her career field and currently serves as the chair of the Human Relations Committee for the City of Pasadena - after six years of being a member. This year Broxton helped plan the 18th annual kick-off event to Black History month and celebration of MLK at Pasadena City Hall titled “Rekindling the Light of Peace.” When asked about her

earliest memory of MLK, Jackie shared that as a teen she viewed MLK with skeptical eyes, and that it wasn’t until she joined the workplace that she began to realize the importance of Dr. King’s way of doing things. Read More at, PasadenaIndependent.com under Feature

he years surrounding Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination in 1968 were momentous in the U.S. The civil rights movement sparked significant legislative shifts, impacting everything from employment discrimination to fair housing to immigration rights. The importance of these reforms is still evident today in Christian Daly, longtime San Gabriel Valley resident. A child of an Afro-Belizean immigrant, Daly experienced virtual homelessness and witnessed first-hand the injustice of a discriminatory government.Only after watching his dad wage (and ultimately win) a lengthy legal battle did Daly conclude, like Dr. King, that “injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” “I initially wanted to become an attorney to fight for the ‘little guy,’” said Daly,

30, who after becoming the first in his family to graduate university helped launch Operation ACE, an initiative to help fellow underrepresented students attend college. But as he finished his master’s in public policy, a father-son chat changed his mind. “I told him helping your community was like moving sand on a beach. An attorney could help one shovel at a time, but public policy can move that sand with a bulldozer,” said Daly. “That’s when I knew what I wanted to do.”

Today, Daly serves as the assistant field deputy for L.A. County Supervisor Kathryn Barger. He keeps his ear to the ground, collecting feedback from the community to inform policy changes county-wide and connecting residents, businesses and nonprofits to critical services. edition was published in 1966, two years after the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Ninety-one-year young Jessica Valentine of Pasadena remembers her trip from the Jim Crow South to California in 1936. Her mom, dad, and a friend who would help with the driving, sat in the front of their Oldsmobile. In the

back seat were her aunt and four children. Valentine said, “We took turns sleeping on the floor. After the homeprepared food was consumed, we had to look for food stands to purchase food. Some of the restaurants would permit take-out service when Daddy went to the back door. We were disappointed and surprised that the treatment of Negroes was not much

different, even after we left the Deep South.” Valentine can’t remember where they used accommodations but she said, “I can say without any reservations that no unpleasant incidents were allowed to dampen the enjoyment of our journey.” Valentine attended segregated Huntington Elementary, went on to college at a HBCU (Historically Black College

Hahamonga Restoration Underway in Pasadena Terry MILLER tmiller@beaconmedianews.com

In the first report of the new year, Pasadena City Manager Steve Mermell outlined the city’s plans for Hahamongna Watershed park that has garnered significant negative publicity in recent months from environmentalists. According to Director of Public Works Ara Maloyan, tree and shrub planting restoration began in Hahamon-

The project provides for approximately 5.81 acres of habitat restoration along the oak woodland sloped and riparian areas associated with the improvements in the western portion of Hahamongna Watershed Park per the adopted HWP Master Plan. of a whopping $19 million facelift for the sports complex. This raised some eyebrows in the community and people started asking questions about the amount of money school districts spend on athletics versus the allotment for academics. Also, in a time when PUSD is in a financial hole, albeit now out of danger of being taken over by the county, according to LACOE

some have questioned the logic of spending so much money on a gym when schools are closing, teaching staff is reduced and buildings consolidated. According to Amanda Ripley, an Emerson senior fellow: “In the world’s smartest countries, school is about learning. Full stop. There is no confusion about the academic hurdles kids must clear to have full and interesting adult lives. Kids play sports, of course, but outside

of school, through recreation centers, club teams or pick-up games on dirt fields with no adults in sight. “The problem is the dishonesty. By mixing sports and academics, we tempt kids into believing that it’s O.K. if they don’t like math or writing — that there is another path to glory. Less obvious is that this path ends abruptly, whereupon they get to spend 50 years in an economy that lavishly rewards those with higher-order skills and ruthlessly punishes those without.

“Competitive sports are not about exercise. If it were, we’d have the fittest kids in the world. It’s about a fantasy with a short shelf life. If we want to build school spirit and teach kids about grit, hold a pep rally for the debate team. Those kids are training to rule the real world.”

Transient Charged with Murder of 75-year-old Pasadena Woman Jean O’Connor, 41, a transient in the North Hollywood area has been charged with killing a 75-year-old woman at her Pasadena home, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced Jan 15. Deputy District Attorney Ryan Erlich is the assigned prosecutor. According to KTLA, police found Jeri Douglas strangled to death on Dec. 17 at approximately 3:40 p.m. after her daughter requested a “welfare check” after she could not get in contact with her mother. KTLA further stated that the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner ruled Douglass’ death as a homicide after further investigation of the suspicious nature of the scene. Currently, the motive of the crime is unknown, but police state that Douglas’ murder was not a “random act of violence”. On Dec. 26, Police apprehended O’Connor in North Hollywood as the suspect of the crime. O’Connor pleaded not guilty Jan. 15,

and she is scheduled to appear in court again on Feb. 26. If convicted as charged, O’Connor faces a possible maximum sentence of 25 years to life in state prison. referring to the $100,000 the county wanted to provide for building a homeless shelter in Pasadena, despite the city finding the strategy ineffective for their homeless population needs. “You can’t build anything here in Pasadena for $100,000,” Huang said. The initiative funding breakdown is as follows: Homeless Prevention for Individuals Initiative - $146,231 to The Ecumenical Council of Pasadena Area Congregations. Rapid Re-Housing Initiative - $300,326 to Union Station Homeless Services. - $150,000 to HathawaySycamores Child and Family Services for transitional age youth. Strengthening the Coordinated Entry System - $136,224 to Union Station

Homeless Services. Enhancing the Emergency Shelter System - $131,677 to The Ecumenical Council of Pasadena Area Congregations - $223,467 to Union Station Homeless Services The county did work with the city to create some flexibility for how the funding will be used and will allow Pasadena to use $238,480 in Rapid Re-Housing funds to fill a case manager staff position that will focus on housing retention for rental assistance participants. They will also be able to use some of the emergency shelter funds for motel vouchers, which can be better suited for service-resistant homeless populations. Pasadena is one of three cities in the county with its own continuum of care, along with Glendale and Long Beach. Last April the three cities wrote to the

County Board of Supervisors asking for direct funding from Measure H, which the county approved last June. “One of the major challenges in obtaining Measure H funding is [the] fact that the [Los Angeles] CEO determines what programs and initiatives it wishes to make available to the cities [with their own continuums of care],” a staff report read. But after learning Long Beach will receive nearly $5 million in Measure H funding despite contributing no taxes to the cause while Pasadena contributes approximately $7 million, the council urged the mayor to author a stronglyworded letter to the Board of Supervisors asking for more equitable funding. Mayor Terry Tornek described the funding situation as “fundamentally inequitable … infuriating and hard to explain.”

Maquina Takes Tacos and Burritos to New Heights Maquina Taco's roots are in the world of fine dining. In 1996 with the inception of Restaurant Devon in Monrovia followed by Restaurant Halie in Pasadena in 2000, its owners honed in on what it takes to make something as simple as a meal an immersive experience. They took their philosophy of creating great food to tacos with the creation of Bull Taco, branded as "inauthentic Mexican." And now, with Maquina on North Lake the owners have shifted to a more thoughtful, upscale concept characterized by fresh ingredients from local vendors and unmatched quality. including a mix of alumni, current families and friends. The gala, set for 5:30 p.m. - 11 p.m., is open to the public. For more information or to become a sponsor or underwriter, please go to maranathagala.com.

Dana Middle School students had the opportunity of a lifetime to hear the incredibly brave and inspiring story of Trudie Strobel—a Holocaust survivor. Born in Ukraine in 1938, Strobel and her mother were sent 600 miles to a Jewish ghetto in Poland when the Nazi's invaded Russia. Strobel experienced the atrocities of life in a labor camp and suffered the staggering loss of many family members. While they were at the camp, Strobel and her mother Masha found solace in sewing, their saving grace during their containment. After several years of jumping back and forth between homes and Displacement Camps, Strobel and her mother made it to America where they worked hard to rebuild their lives. In the United States, Strobel married a

Holocaust survivor and had two sons. As her children grew up, Strobel and her husband did not speak about the past. To recover from the psychological side effects of her youth, Strobel embraced her inner artist with the help of her therapist who suggested drawing to express her emotions. Since she began creating art, Strobel has been honored by the California State Assembly in 2018 for her 30 years of helping new generations of students remember the importance of tolerance and acceptance. Bone Kettle’s Delicious Offerings Continue to Impress Diners Brianna CHU Guest Contributor

L

ast year, May and I were invited to a PR mixer at the Bone Kettle, a Southeast Asian restaurant and bar in Old Pasadena and the food was, as hoped for, simply amazing. I loved it so much that I revisited the restaurant last week with my family for lunch to try their full menu on for size. At their opening time of 11:30 a.m., there were available tables everywhere in the young, modern space, and we easily got a great booth in the main dining room. Over the next hour, though, tables began to fill up rather quickly for a random weekday.

HEALTH FITNESS

Service was fast, too - our main courses were served almost immediately after we finished devouring our appetizer, and their staff were friendly and helpful. An important note to future diners: the lunch and dinner menus vary slightly. The succulent oxtail dumplings that I was looking forward to were reserved as an appetizer for the dinner menu. Luckily, however, the amazingly juicy and yet perfectly crunchy fried chicken wings with Thai chilis, sweet sauce, and lime did appear on the lunch menu and tasted just as wonderful as they had previously. May opted for a rice plate with their fatty beef brisket - it was reportedly excellent, and presented beautifully. Vibrant vege-

tables and delicious meat haloed a rice plateau that featured a soft poached egg nestled at its center. It was a balanced, delicious plate for about $19-20, though prices vary on your protein choice, from tempeh to varying meats.

ou probably made resolutions to start New Year’s off on the right foot. To start eating better, to show up to the gym, or maybe just to stop waking up late in the mornings. You set those resolutions because you wanted to change. Sadly, those resolutions probably won’t take you far. You might’ve heard this before, but 80% of resolutions usually fail by February. I’m sure that every resolution seeker out there wants to achieve their resolutions, but it often takes a lot more than desire to achieve large and, sometimes, overwhelming goals. Failure to plan is one of the most common reasons why people fail to achieve their resolutions. “If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail” – Benjamin Franklin Planning is of huge importance. Without a plan in place, you won’t know whether your efforts are actually taking you towards the right direction. Even the most basic plan can help give you direction.

A simple way of planning out resolutions is by using SMART goals. That stands for specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and timebound. How do you do that? Let’s break it down. Specific You want to know exactly what you’re trying to achieve. The goal of “weight loss” is super general, but “dropping 15 pounds of body fat and reducing my waistline by 8 inches” is a very well-defined goal. Measurable Know what metrics are important to track. When it comes to weight loss, I always track my clients by metrics that I use alongside the modified YMCA method (a body fat percentage equation). For men, those variables include body weight (in pounds) and waist circumference (in inches) aligned with the belly button. For women, I use the same body weight and waist circumference, but I also

add in wrist circumference, forearm circumference, and hip circumference at the widest point. Those are the points that you’ll see noticeable changes in for each sex. Attainable Is it possible for you to achieve your goal? Not to be a buzz kill, but trying to drop 10 pounds, in one single week will lead you down some pretty unpleasant paths. Instead, break your goal apart and be reasonable with what you’re trying to achieve and the resources that you’ve got on hand. Relevant If your goal is important to you and it actually matters, then yes it’s relevant. If not, you probably stopped reading at point 1 already. Time-bound This is where the positive pressure comes in. Without time-boundaries, goals are just goals. By setting a time of completion, you give yourself that friendly nudge to stick to the plan all the way through.

few months ago, I visited the California Science Center in Los Angeles (LA) to see the world-famous “King Tut: Treasures of the Golden Pharaoh” exhibit. The display, the largest King Tut exhibition ever toured, was so expansive and interesting that I did not have time to see the many other jewels that the Science Center has to offer. So with King Tut leaving town, I decided to return to the center and do some scientific exploring. The California Science Center offers fun and informative exhibits presented in interactive worlds. Through more than 100 hands-on

oxtail, served with five ounces of fresh ramen, basil, cilantro, and sliced heirloom carrots, with the addition of a cheeky poached egg (for an extra $2, but I love eggs in my soup). At $24 for the large oxtail, noodles, and broth, I felt the meal was worth the price, especially given that the oxtail was the most expensive protein option for the broth. The Bone Kettle’s presentation, as ever, was impeccable. The oxtail was served on its own plate with crispy fried shallots and edible flowers, and the flavorful, succulent meat could be readily pulled off the bone with our chopsticks. I can happily confirm that I was as captivated by their broth this time around as I was the

first! I left comfortably full, and even took home some leftover oxtail. I wanted to check out the restaurant on my own time (and dime) to see whether I would enjoy the food and atmosphere just as much, and the Bone Kettle did not disappoint. I highly recommend the restaurant to everyone, as there are options for meateaters and vegans alike. Brianna Chu, a guest opinion writer for Beacon Media, was born and raised in Pasadena. A Day at the California Science Center experiences, guests can learn about human inventions and innovations, the life processes of living things and more. The Science Center also features fantastic special exhibitions that change all the time. The current highlight at the Science Center is the permanent exhibit entitled: Mission 26: The Big Endeavour. Featuring the actual space shuttle Endeavour, the display features photographs highlighting some of the spectacular scenes witnessed during the shuttle’s years of service as a NASA orbiter from 1992 to 2011. During its service, the ship flew for the Hubble Space Telescope, delivered supplies to the International Space Station and more. In 2012, the Endeavour was moved and retired to the

Samuel Oschin Pavilion at the California Science Center. Moving the space shuttle across the United States was a massive undertaking. The journey began on the back of a Boeing 747 from Cape Canaveral, Florida to Edwards Air Force Base in California. After landing at Los Angeles International Airport, the biggest adventure was yet to come as the 78 feet-wide, 57 feet-high and 122 feet-long space ship was transported through LA streets to its new home. Monrovia Splits Pair of League-Opening Matches

Arcadia Glides Past Burbank for 10th Straight Win It’s no secret that Arcadia girls’ basketball has got something special going on this season as the team enter the final stretch. What’s even more impressive is that despite compiling a conservative 12-13 record last year, the Apaches have come back full force this time around. The team’s stellar play this season has taken Division 2A by storm as the Apaches were ranked No. 3 in the latest CIF rankings. Tuesday night’s 59-47 win over Burbank marked Arcadia’s 10th consecutive victory, which is a streak that was started by defeating Burbank on Dec. 4 after losing to Orange Lutheran Nov. 30. The latest game against the Bulldogs was a tight

one in the early stages with Arcadia only holding a slim 11-10 lead by the end of the first quarter. However, once the Apaches have the advantage, they are extremely difficult to beat, as Burbank would soon find out. Arcadia maintained a healthy lead throughout the rest of the contest thanks in large part to their dynamic duo of Sahana Saikumar and Ashley Sue, who combined for 35 points. The Apaches eventually cruised to their 19th win as they also swept the season series against Burbank. The team’s record improved to 19-1 overall and 9-0 in Pacific League action. On the season, Saikumar is averaging 15.3 points per game while Sue is averaging

15.1. Back when the Apaches demolished Hoover 82-12 on Dec. 7, Saikumar hit a milestone in which she reached her 1000th career point as a high school basketball player. “Honestly, it felt surreal,” Saikumar said of her accomplishment in an interview with Arcadia Unified. “It’s just something you dream of ever since you were a little kid. It’s an amazing milestone, and to actually reach it is a blessing.” Arcadia has five league games and two nonleague games left on its schedule with a very critical match coming up against Pasadena on Friday. The Bulldogs are currently in second place at 7-2 and will need a huge win over Arcadia to keep them within striking distance for the league title.

Polytechnic Panthers Zero in on Perfect Season As we enter the twilight of the 2019 regular season, Pasadena’s Polytechnic girls’ water polo team is on the verge of finishing the year without losing one single game. The Panthers have been virtually unstoppable this season as they look to avenge last year’s abrupt first-round playoff loss to Palos Verdes in double overtime. The team’s latest 21-3 victory over crosstown rival La Salle on Tuesday brings them one step closer to not only the Prep League title, but to CIF playoffs as well. This prolific win against La Salle is not out of the ordinary for the Panthers, but it does represent their second-largest margin of victory this season with the largest being a 21-1 dismantling over Brentwood on Dec. 12.

Overall, Polytechnic has defeated its opponents by an average margin of 12 goals this season. On another good note, the Panthers had a remarkable run at the seventh annual Los Altos Tournament in December, winning their section by defeating Bonita 17-7, La Habra 10-4, Brea

Olinda 12-7 and Sunny Hills 13-7. With Polytechnic’s record at 15-0 overall and 9-0 in league, the team will just have to defeat Westridge on Friday to secure the league crown. The Panthers already beat Westridge 20-4 back on Jan. 7

The Monrovia girls’ soccer team has experienced some turbulence this season but can still manage to make a serious run at the Rio Hondo League crown. After opening the season 4-0-1, Wildcats seemed very poised to not only compete for the league title, but also qualify for CIF and make a deep run. However, things took a turn for the worse at the Westminster Tournament back in early December where Monrovia began a six-game losing skid. The Wildcats have somewhat bounced back from their losing streak, but have gone 1-2 since the turn of the calendar year. The team suffered a deflating 5-0 defeat to rivals La Cañada in the opening game of league play on Jan. 5. Monrovia did manage to edge out San Marino 2-1 to even out its Rio

Hondo record but fell 4-2 to San Gabriel Mission in a nonleague bout on Jan. 11. Monrovia currently sits smack in the middle of the league table with a 1-1 record (7-8-2 overall) but already have a lot of ground to make up as South Pasadena and Temple City present formidable

roadblocks. The Wildcats’ match against Temple City on Tuesday was canceled due to rainy conditions and will be rescheduled to a later date. The next game on Monrovia’s slate will be a home match against firstplace South Pasadena on Friday at 3:30 p.m.

If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. In the corporate world, I’ve spent many years as a digital marketer. I’ve led teams and projects centered on acquiring new customers online. These acronyms are part of the jargon that digital marketers use every day. They stand for search engine results pages, pay per click, cost per acquisition, cost per thousand, and key performance indicators. Who would have guessed? Sometimes, acronyms can be a necessary and useful way to communicate. Other times they’re a total waste of space and frankly rude to the person you’re speaking to. I’m sure you can relate. Who hasn’t felt talked down to by someone throwing out industry jargon as if it’s another language? It can feel like the person has something to prove. The point of what I’m saying is this: if you can communicate your message to someone simply and without using jargon, do it. Only use industry specific jargon and acronyms when there’s not another way.

This is especially true when you’re talking with colleagues or clients who work in another department, another industry, or another company. And, it’s also true when you’re interviewing. Nothing turns off a hiring manager (or a candidate) faster than throwing a bunch of letters at them. Talk to others in a respectful way. Speak to them in a manner that shows that you believe you’re on the same level with them. Assume they will understand the concepts, but don’t assume they’ve been studying from the same dictionary. I’ve never received a higher compliment than when I worked with franchise owners. After giving a presentation to a few hundred owners on the topic of digital marketing, one owner approached me. He said that nobody else had ever spoken to him about the internet in a way that he understood so clearly. He appreciated me taking the time to speak using plain language, but with an important message.

Epic Bike Crash in Rural Peru An unfortunate crash during a trip of a lifetime abruptly cut the enjoyment short. With a travel insurance policy from Arch RoamRight, short-term care, stabilization and evacuation services to the right facilities were provided. How It Happened In April 2017, the insured – a female in her 50s – was biking in a remote part of Peru. A wrong turn in rough terrain resulted in significant injuries, including several broken ribs and a collapsed lung. As if the injuries were not enough, the local healthcare facilities were not equipped to handle such a severe case and a potentially long-term recovery. The Challenge Injuries sustained in remote areas can present significant challenges in terms of stabilization, treatment and evacuation, if necessary. Local facilities are often not prepared for complex injuries or illnesses, making evacuation to more populous, well served areas a more pressing requirement. Travelers can be left stranded far from home with limited transportation options and support, facing

exorbitant out of pocket expenses and the added stress of coordinating treatment and transportation. The Outcome The insured’s condition was deemed a covered injury requiring evacuation to a regional hospital with better treatment capabilities. Once stabilized and deemed fit for travel, the insured was transferred to her home hospital in the United States via air ambulance. The total cost of the claim, including local stabilization, regional treatment and required transport via air ambulance exceeded $100,000. The Bottom Line Fortunately, most travel-

ers will not experience such a situation. However, for the rare occurrence of a significant medical emergency while traveling, the savings add up quickly. I am 55-year-old female and am embarrassed whenever I smile. I had braces when I was a teenager and don’t want braces as an adult. My teeth are moving more and more and are chipping on the edges. I used to have a big smile, but now I only sort of smile to hide my teeth. What can I do? Signed: Scared of the Dentist

Dear Smile Challenged: As a cosmetic dentist, I hear someone confess this concern at least a couple of times a week. There is an advanced dental procedure which can rejuvenate a person’s smile in two appointments. This miracle of dentistry is called porcelain veneers. Porcelain veneers were developed a number of years ago. Their popularity has soared due to state-of-the-art porcelain, advanced materials and improved techniques for fabricating and placing veneers. Porcelain veneers are extremely thin pieces of porcelain which are bonded

to the front and edges of your teeth. To prepare the surface of the tooth, a dentist will slightly reduce the tooth to make room for a thin piece of porcelain. In some cases tooth structure does not have to be removed at all. In some cases, no dental anesthetic needs to be given. Porcelain veneers are used to correct a multitude of problems such as: - crowded teeth. - gaps between teeth. - discolored teeth (such as tetracycline stains or years of abuse such as coffee, smoking etc.). - chipped or worn teeth from age or a dysfunctional bite.

Porcelain veneers are mainly utilized on the upper and lower front teeth, but in selected cases, they may also be fabricated on back teeth as well. Like all dental procedures you and a dentist should discuss the advantages of veneers as well as other alternative avenues of treatment. 2019 is a great year to renew your smile. Dr. Kenneth Canzoneri maintains a private family practice in Arcadia, CA. He specializes in advanced laser dentistry and rebuilding smiles for both cosmetics and function.
