ith only 12 years left to limit the accelerating effects of climate change, Pasadena’s latest energy plan
continues to procure 31 percent of its power from the Intermountain coalfired plant through 2025, despite being the Pasadena Water and Power’s (PWP) largest climate change driver. PWP’s Integrated Resource Plan (IRP)
outlined several procurement scenarios — including some that would divest the city of Intermountain Power Plant (IPP) energy, increase biomass production and diversify the renewable energy portfolio — before ultimately recommending an option
that goes beyond state regulations but falls short of comparable emissioncurtailing scenarios.

Will Senator Harris’ NRA Encroach Monrovia’s Wilderness Preserve? Susan MOTANDER motander@yahoo.com
California Senator Kamala Harris has proposed legislation that would create a National Recreation Area (NRA) in the San Gabriel Mountains. Harris’ legislation is a companion act to that of Congresswoman Judy Chu that calls for the same NRA. According to City Manager Oliver Chi, city staff members have been trying to research the two pieces of legislation to find a map of the proposed NRA. Chi wrote that despite being told by Harris’ staff that no map exists, a map is referred to in the proposed legislation. To review it, go to the city’s website and search for the City Manager’s Update: www.cityofmonrovia.com At first glance, there does not seem to be any impact on non-federally owned land. an additional layer of oversight over some portions of Monrovia. Since the Secretary of the Interior does not have to prepare a Management Plan for the NRA until three years after the passage of the law, some questions remain. Chi promises to keep the community informed on the impact of the proposed legislation.

uring last week’s annual holiday party for employees and contributors, Beacon Media CEO Jesse Dillon surprised Tony Virrueta by announcing the results of the annual employee nominations for the coveted EOY Employee of the Year – award. Dillon said that this year’s votes were overwhelmingly stacked in favor of the popular graphic artist who has been with the company a relatively short period of time (just over a year) and has quickly become part of the extended Beacon family. Long-time accountant/ bookkeeper Vera Shamon said she was so happy Tony Virrueta won the award. “We all love Tony sooooo much, he’s a special kind of guy,” Shamon said. Ever humble and thankful, the following day Virrueta brought in delicious pasties with a note thanking those

who voted for him - we all did - and claiming that his award belongs to everyone in the office. Known for his talent at creating stunning print and digital advertising, Virrueta is also an avid soccer fan and even referees for United States Soccer Federation [USSF]. Virrueta (AKA Tony) is the second recipient of the award that recognizes an outstanding individual who goes above and beyond the call of duty and exemplifies the meaning of teamwork. In addition to Virrueta’s talent for finding just the right font, he manages to seam-
lessly put together several newspapers twice weekly and make a rather complicated process of placing and arranging design elements look easy. In another life, Virrueta was a radio producer at Super Estrella in Los Angeles. His wife of five years, Genoveva Rocha, works as deputy city clerk for the city Pomona. In 1964 President Dwight D. Eisenhower received the honor of being named Grand Marshal of the Rose Parade for the second time. As one version of the story goes, during a cocktail party Eisenhower visited the bathroom, when he pulled on the door knob it came off. No one heard him pounding on the door and he wasn’t found until concerned aides began searching for him. According to one retelling of the story, the Secret Service was eventually able to liberate the WWII commander from the restroom. (One version of the story claims the parade had to be delayed because of this incident.) To this day, that restroom is referred to as the “Eisenhower bathroom.” Source: la.curbed.com/2014/12/30/10007350/how-pasadenas-wrigley-mansion-became-tournament-house-1

The Pasadena Heritage Protects the City’s Significant Landmarks May S. RUIZ MayChu@att.net
O
ld Pasadena is a bustling place that has become a dining, shopping, and entertainment destination for people of all ages. There was a time, however, when this corner of the city was a rundown area and no one had reason to wander into it. And were it not for the Pasadena Heritage, the city’s original downtown and its historic buildings would have disappeared altogether. Patty Judy, Pasadena Heritage’s Education Director, describes, “In 1977 concerned citizens from various walks of life were seeing some of the historic structures in the city being demolished or being threatened for demolition to make room for generic properties and large corporate buildings. The plan to bulldoze Old Pasadena,
including structures there like the Parsons headquarters, was of particular interest to them. Additionally, they noticed that neighborhoods were endangered – craftsman houses were being torn down, new development were sprouting, and the climate of the area was changing.” “Bill Ellinger, who was an architectural historian working oversees and came back and saw what was happening, and Claire Bogaard, whose husband Bill would later become Pasadena’s mayor, were two of those who actively advocated for an organization to preserve the city’s architectural treasures. As I heard it, someone said ‘Anyone who wants to join us can come to Claire’s house and they will be the first board.’ They adjourned to the dining room and that was their first board meeting. Thus, Pasadena Heritage was born.” Many of us aren’t aware
of Pasadena Heritage’s existence at all, which is regrettable because its impact on our surroundings is sweeping. As Judy elaborates, “People don’t understand why Pasadena looks the way it does and how much that has to do with our influence. I think it might be a shock for people to know how many meetings we go to with the City or how many times we meet with developers and how much sway we have.” Throughout its 40-year history, Pasadena Heritage has achieved several milestones. It marked the 20th anniversary of its Craftsman Weekend in 2011. In 2012, it celebrated ‘35 Years of Preservation’ as the theme of the summer’s Colorado Street Bridge Party. Last year, it commemorated the four decades of its founding and co-hosted a very successful California Historic Preservation Conference scheduled with multiple programs
throughout the year. A major ‘40 Years Celebration’ was held in October of 2017 in the original Exhibition Hall at the Civic Auditorium. When Claire Bogaard and other caring citizens decided to put their heads together to save Old Pasadena from
demolition all those years ago, they did not foresee how that singular resolve would affect the most extraordinary projects that uphold the integrity of structures. And the work hasn’t ebbed – there are ever more buildings needing to be rescued
from the wrecking ball. Today Pasadena Heritage continues its mandate of protecting the city’s rich architectural history and preserving the landmarks that make Pasadena the unique and charming place that we’re proud to call our home.

MONROVIA’S DELGADO BROS. ‘TWO TRAINS’ IS RIGHT ON TRACK Terry MILLER tmiller@beaconmedianews.com
T
here are rare occasions when a new album knocks my socks off, but my friend Joey Delgado did just that when he sent me his band’s latest collection of marvelous original songs a few weeks ago. The title track, “Two Trains” immediately grabbed my attention with haunting vocals, brilliant guitar and bass and a terrific drum line pounding the tracks, which lead to a great and memorable chorus. When I looked at the liner notes, I was delighted to see John Avila’s input into the superb production. Avila, of Oingo Boingo fame, is a talented local bass player and the producer who mixed the record in San Gabriel.

ith 13 major floats still to be completed, Fiesta Floats went into overdrive on Boxing Day, Dec. 26, in Irwindale, Calif. The hub of activity from welding and painting to prepping the flowers and the seeds for the floats surrounded volunteers who were seen wall to wall with unshakable enthusiasm for the 2019 Rose

In keeping with the theme “Melody of Life,” the 55-foot long Stella Rosa float will feature the legendary Grammy-award winning band Kool & the Gang, which has influenced the music of generations and will fittingly be celebrating their 50th year. CHAKA KHAN TO DELIGHT AS GRAND MARSHAL classic and unmatched signature music style and ability. Throughout her legendary career, Khan has released 22 albums and ten Number 1 Billboard magazine charted songs. However, the song that propelled her to stardom was the 1984 charttopping, Grammy awardwinning song, “I Feel For You,” written and first performed by Prince. Despite her busy schedule, Khan has always made time to support and uplift her community. In 1999 she established the Chaka Khan Foundation which educates, inspires and empowers children to achieve their full potential. Through the Chaka Believes Program, the foundation gives children in Los Angeles who are at risk, either through poverty or through health issues like autism, the ability to achieve their dreams and give back to the community.

For millions of people around the world, the Rose Parade is an iconic New Year’s Day tradition. The Rose Parade travels 5.5 miles down Colorado Boulevard and features four types of entries: floral-decorated floats entered by a participating corporation, non-profit organization or municipality, equestrian units, bands, and Tournament Entries. Rose Parade participants have long histories with the Tournament of Roses and keep the traditions alive. The Rose Parade Grand Marshal is the one to welcome attendees and viewers to the spectacular. And this year singer, songwriter, and 10-time Grammy winner Chaka Khan is the grand marshal. She will ride in the 130th Rose Parade presented by Honda, themed “The Melody of Life,” and join in the pre-game celebration of the 105th Rose Bowl Game

MONROVIA STUDENTS GRADUATE FROM AZUSA PACIFIC UNIVERSITY The following students from Monrovia graduated from Azusa Pacific University on Saturday, Dec. 15 and joined approximately 1,480 graduates at the winter commencement ceremonies: - Anastasia Corrales earned a Bachelor of Arts in business management. - Jazm Jumlani earned a Bachelor of Science in nursing. - Jarred Olson earned a Bachelor of Music
in commercial music. Azusa Pacific University is an evangelical, Christian university committed to God first and excellence in higher education. With 61 bachelor's degrees, 45 master's degrees, 24 certificates, 12 credentials, and eight doctoral programs, the university offers its more than 10,000 students a quality education on campus, online, and at seven regional locations throughout Southern California.
On Friday, Dec. 21, several of Santa's helpers, his elves, one of his reindeer and even a toy soldier visited pediatric patients at LAC+USC Hospital in downtown Los Angeles in an effort to spread a little joy. PUSD Marshall Fundamental student community service club, The A.C.T. Club (which stands for Action Changes Things and is comprised mostly of 8th grade students), delivered toys and spent several hours playing with the pediatric patients and their siblings. Every child on the floor and their siblings had a chance to select a toy and decorate sugar cookies and afterwards, Santa's helpers played games with the children. Those patients who were unable to leave their room got a visit from several of Santa's helpers bearing gifts in a big red wagon. Children in PICU (pediatric intensive care unit) and isolation weren't forgotten either. And, the parents of infants in NICU (neonatal intensive care unit) were given a small gift as well. The hospital's Department of Children and Family Services unit were also gifted a box of toys.

BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU MOVEMENT TAKES ROOT IN ARCADIA

razilian jiu-jitsu (known as BJJ) is one of the fastestgrowing martial arts in the world. With Japanese roots, the sport flourished in Brazil under the Gracie family, who transformed jiu-jitsu into the grappling phenomenon known today. But you don’t need to travel far to get a taste—simply head to School Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Arcadia to discover BJJ for yourself. “I think the popularity of BJJ increased initially from interest in the Ultimate Fighting Championship— but I’ve noticed a lot of my new students don’t follow the UFC. I think people are getting smarter and noticing what works and what doesn’t in a combat situation,” said Ben Zhuang, owner, head coach and sports nutritionist at School Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Himself a Paragon black belt in jiu-jitsu and a brown belt in judo, Zhuang opened the gym to counter the cult-like pursuit of conquest he was noticing at other gyms. “I wanted a place where there would be no cliques or big egos,” he said. “I wanted a supportive team environment that’s more about learning

than winning in the training room.” School Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu teaches BJJ literally from the ground up, offering courses to kids and adults via a roster of impressive instructors. Kickboxing and judo are also available for adults—and whether you’re simply looking to get in shape or prepare for competition, you’ll find a supportive community at School BJJ. “I started out wanting to train in some martial art as self-defense. I did a free trial of BJJ and wound up liking it more than I expected,” said Danny Hy, a School BJJ student since July 2018. Of especial importance to Hy is learning to grapple properly to avoid injury. The grappling aspect is one of BJJ’s most fascinating elements. Here the biggest
and baddest don’t necessarily have the upper hand; instead, students can use their opponent’s weight against them. Size matters, but technique is king—making the sport attractive to those who don’t rely merely on brute strength for self-defense School Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is located at 310 S. First Ave. in Arcadia. o you just finished designing the perfect E-Newsletter. You have great content, stimulating images, and advertisements. Now how do you let everyone know it exists? There are multiple ways to market your E-Newsletter. Social media, event booths, and website subscriber forms are three marketing strategies that are proven ways to promote your E-Newsletter. Social Media increases the engagement rates, and number of views from subscribers. Social media creates relationships because it puts a face and a name to your email subscribers. Social media can promote the company’s E-Newsletters by posting giveaways, special events, and contests that will grab people’s attention. E-Newsletters are usually sent out to subscribers through email but since in today’s generation, social media
is a big marketing outlet. Companies can create campaigns to post on social media featuring different events and news stories. For example, Beacon Media News uses three different social media outlets to help promote their E-Newsletters. They post their weekly newspaper articles so their followers and subscribers aren’t missing out. Another way that is important to market your E-Newsletter is by hosting event booths at special events - That way people will notice what company you are promoting in person. What is event marketing? According to Marketo, “Event marketing describes the process of developing a themed exhibit, display, or presentation to promote a product, service, cause, or organization leveraging in-person engagement. Events can occur online or offline, and can be participated in, hosted, or sponsored. The promotion of these activities can occur through various inbound and outbound marketing techniques.” Beacon Media
News for instance, participates in local community events and they use a spin wheel game to grab people’s attention. Once people play the game and win different prizes, team members of the company promote their newspapers and ask any questions they have. The last marketing strategy for E-Newsletters is promoting the E-Newsletters by using website subscriber forms. The information subscribers receive is easily to be accessed through email and digital marketing. How so? Because most people are always on their desktop or phones all the time on a daily basis. Marketing E-Newsletters onto company websites improves the numbers of views and engagements with the E-Newsletters. THE YEAR 2018 IN REVIEW
Travel Greg ARAGON gregsgetawaytravel@gmail.com
T
he New Year is here and as I look ahead to some fabulous upcoming trips, I would first like to look back on a few of my favorite getaways of 2018. One of the my favorite excursions of the past year found me in Marina del Rey, where I spent a couple nights at Jamaica Bay Inn, a tropical islandlike resort located on the city’s beautiful marina. With great views of sand and water, the boutique hotel is a true West Indies-inspired experience, complete with rattan furnishings, warm colors, rich textures and lush flora. And like a Caribbean resort, the water is only

few steps away. When not relaxing in my room, I was exploring town. Built in the early 1960s at the site of an old salt marsh, Marina del Rey is a modern wonder of construction. As one of the world’s largest man-made small craft harbors, it features eight basins and is home to approximately 6,500 boats. To get an up-close look at things, I rented a kayak from the Pro SUP Shop. During my harbor tour I paddled past milliondollar yachts and old wooden sloops. I waved to small boats passing by and barking seals sunbathing on rocks. After playing on the water, I had a great dinner at the hotel’s Beachside Restaurant & Bar and then walked to “Mother’s
Beach” to listen to live music at Marina del Rey’s “Food Truck Thursdays” weekly event. In the morning I rented a bicycle from the hotel and rode to Venice Beach to lounge on the sand. Another memorable California beach trip took me to Oceanside. My getaway began at The Fin, a charming little hotel which originally opened in 1927 as the Keisker and was one of the first hotels in Oceanside. Once checked into my room I took a walking tour. This was highlighted by a stop at the “Top Gun” house, the cottage made famous in Tom Cruise’s 1986 fighter pilot movie. The Queen Anne Victorian residence was built in 1887 and is one of the oldest houses still standing in

Oceanside. It located across from the 1,942 ft-long Oceanside Pier, one of the longest wooden piers on the West Coast. From here I visited California Surf Museum. Celebrating the history
and lifestyle of surfing, the museum showcases exhibits and displays numerous popular surfers and the boards that made them famous, including Bethany Hamilton’s sharkbitten board.

READER SHARES OWN EXPERIENCE WITH CAT If Nugget could talk, I’m sure she’d say to all those who participated in her rescue that she wasn’t scared at all, and only hid from them to see if anyone was smart enough to find her. You see, cats are proudly independent, and anyone who thinks they need help is sorely mistaken. Because never, in the history of the feline clan, has there been a member who will acknowledge the superiority of any other species on earth … including humans. Consider my experience with Pumpkin, with whom I fell in love at first sight, and thought she felt the same
towards me. That is, until one day when I came into the house after being away all day. Sensing that she was closely following me, I turned and looked at her. Quick as a flash, she sat down and, feigning supreme indifference, began to studiously lick her paw, as if to say, “Don’t flatter yourself, worthless human, by thinking that I was following you like a puppy dog. As you can see, I have better things to do.” Yes, our cats are arrogant and egocentric. But let’s face it: They are our masters and mistresses, and our love for them is everlasting, despite their utter lack of humility. - David Q. MONROVIA

OHIO STATE TO TAKE ON WASHINGTON IN RENOWNED ROSE BOWL GAME
‘T
is the season! The College Bowl season that is. Pasadena’s historic Rose Bowl stadium is set to host its New Year’s Day classic as the No. 6 Ohio State Buckeyes face off against the No. 9 Washington Huskies on Jan. 1. The college football season has finally reached its pinnacle with a hefty slate of bowl games that is sure help usher in the new year with a blast. The Rose Bowl has hosted its respective game every year since 1916, which has rightfully earned it the nickname “The Granddaddy
of Them All.” This time around, perennial Big Ten Conference powerhouse Ohio State (12-1) will come out west and duke it out with Pac-12 champion Washington (10-3). This game will mark the 15th occasion each side has played in the Rose Bowl. However, this will be the first time the Buckeyes and Huskies have locked horns in a postseason match-up. The story of the game will most notably revolve around the fact that this will be the end of an era at Ohio State. Legendary 33-year Head Coach Urben Meyer (six at Ohio State) announced on
Arcadia Preps for Latter Stretch of League Title Race While most teams are taking a break in celebration of the holidays, the Arcadia girls’ soccer team doesn’t plan to take a break from winning as they will soon return in January looking to continue their unbeaten streak in league play. Overall, the Apaches have gone up against a stout schedule that has brought their record to 5-5-2.

up against stout competition, including heated rival Michigan, who ranked No. 1 in defensive rating. Despite being somewhat the underdog in this affair, Washington is no slouch as the Huskies are the Pac 12 champions for no reason. Quarterback Jake Browning will be the X factor as the All-Pac 12 selection will lead the fifth best ranked offense (412.5) in the conference. The Rose Bowl game between Ohio State and Washington will kick off at 2 p.m. and will follow Pasadena’s famous Rose Parade on New Year’s Day.
NEW YEAR, SAME GOAL FOR MONROVIA GIRLS’ SOCCER A revival year is still intact for Monrovia girls’ soccer as the Wildcats sharpen their claws in preparation for their Rio Hondo League campaign that begins at the turn of the new year. On a good note, the Wildcats have already outdone themselves compared to last season. Last year, Monrovia was only able to win four total games while finishing last in league.

Meyer accrued an astounding 82-9 record during his tenure at Ohio State while winning one national championship in 2014 and three Big Ten championships in 2014, 2017 and 2018. Along with wanting to send their decorated head coach out with a victory, the Buckeyes definitely have the history, experience and numbers on their side. On offense, Ohio State was nationally the second best in passing and total offense with ratings of 373 and 548.8, respectively. This was no fluke either, as the Buckeyes went
