ity Manager Steve Mermell told Pasadena Independent that the final three candidates went through the conclusive selection process for the coveted position of Pasadena police chief last week. One out of town candidate voluntarily withdrew at the eleventh hour. And then last week the city manager met with the final candidates and ultimately picked the top contender, John Perez who is a 33-year veteran of the department. A few weeks ago, Pasadena Independent sat down with the then interim chief about his goals for the department, in his office near city hall. Perez had been serving as the interim chief of police since April 2018, after former Chief Phil Sanchez announced his retirement. The genuinely motivated chief expressed remarkable candor about his department and future plans which heavily lean on community policing and use of force issues that have tarnished police departments throughout the country in recent years. Backed by strong community support, the Pasadena City Council approved a development concept for Heritage Square South that will include up to 70 units of permanent supportive housing for homeless seniors and 10,000-square-feet of retail space, on Monday night.

Some 170 motorcycle riders from the Boozefighters Motorcycle Club Chapter 101 and other local motorcycle clubs took part in a toy ride on Dec. 16 for Hillsides, a Southern California mental health and foster care charity. The riders rode from Santa Clarita to Hillsides’ main campus in Pasadena with several truckloads of holiday toys for the children and families Hillsides serves. “This is the fourth year the Boozefighters motorcyclists and their friends have supported Hillsides during the holidays with a toy run, and we are so appreciative of their generosity,” said Hillsides President and CEO Joseph M. Costa. “It is incredible to see so many riders, some who come as far away as
Northern California, take part in what has become one of the highlights of the holiday season for us.” Several staff members and children in residence at Hillsides were on hand to meet the riders. Hillsides board chair Jesse Cripps also attended the event and welcomed the riders to campus. The toy run was created by actor Robert Patrick, who most recently starred in the CBS series “Scorpion.” Patrick learned about Hillsides through his local Episcopal church, St. Thomas the Apostle in Hollywood. Hillsides has its roots in the Episcopal Church, having been founded in 1913 by an Episcopal deaconess, Evelyn Wile. Besides helping Hillsides, Patrick is a devoted advocate for
veterans and has traveled around the world with the United Service Organizations (USO) visiting troops. While Patrick was unable to participate in the toy run this year, he has for the previous three years and his wife and two children were able to attend. The Boozefighters Motorcycle Club was formed by ex-servicemen returning from World War II and is one of the oldest motorcycle clubs in the nation. The gifts collected through the toy run will be distributed to some of the nearly 17,000 children and families Hillsides serves throughout Los Angeles County. Without groups like the Boozefighters and friends, many children and families would face the holidays without gifts.

The ant family exists on every continent on earth but Antarctica. It’s common knowledge that ants can carry 20 times their own weight - and a 2014 study of New York City streets estimated that every year, arthropods pick up the equivalent of 60,000 hot dogs in food waste- but not everyone is familiar with “Dracula ants.” This is a range of species found all over the world, earned the name by drinking the hemolymph (fluid equivalent to blood) of their own larvae without killing them. The queens of the stigmatomma silvestrii species appears to survive solely on this. Ants may consider this a fair trade because when the queen of the colony dies, it can only survive a few months as queens are rarely replaced. n keeping with their Christmas tradition of adapting the classics into family Panto events, the Lythgoes premiere ‘The Wonderful Winter of Oz’ at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium from December 15 to December 30, 2018. This star-studded presentation headlines singer, actress, and dancer Mackenzie Ziegler as Dorothy, Tony Award winner Marissa Jaret Winokur as Glinda, Jared Gertner as The Scarecrow, Phil LaMarr as The Tin Man, and Yvette Gonzales-Nacer as The Wicked Witch of the West. The ‘Wonderful Winter of Oz’ is directed by Bonnie Lythgoe, choreographed by Napoleon and Tabitha D’umo, with book by Kris Lythgoe, and Michael Orland serving as musical arranger and supervisor. A holiday version of America’s favorite modern fairy tale done in the style of a traditional British Family Panto, Dorothy gets swept away by a ‘freak’ blizzard on Christmas Eve and lands in
a world of munchkins and witches. Featuring songs from Imagine Dragons to Earth, Wind and Fire, it promises to delight people of all ages. Gertner, who was in last year’s ‘Beauty and the Beast,’ is thrilled to be involved once more. He says, “I’m revisiting the role of Scarecrow which I played in 8th grade. In high school, I also did ‘The Wiz’ so this world has been with me for a long time. This is a story that made me so happy; I don’t think there’s anybody out there who doesn’t have an attachment to the story so I’m anticipating really great response from the audience.” Besides being The Scarecrow in the show, Gertner will also be hosting a segment called ‘The Golden Ticket.’ Gertner explains, “For an extra bit of money, parents could buy their child a golden ticket. At the end of the show, I’ll bring them on stage and interview them. While the danger with audience interaction is that we don’t know which way it could go, it’s also an interesting challenge. I will let them steer a bit but I will be in control. That way, everyone feels they’re getting
an original experience. The show changes when someone from the audience comes on stage … it becomes something different and fresh. I could never let my guard down but I enjoy the ride at the same time. I’ve been on Broadway and all over the world but doing the ‘Golden Ticket’ is one of the most fun experiences I’ve ever had on stage.” ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Oz’ brings an extra dose of excitement for Gertner. He discloses, “Kermit plays the wizard. Everyone loves Kermit – he’s an icon and an institution. And the thought of being on stage with Kermit makes me giddy. I sing ‘Rainbow Connection’ to my three-year-old son, so it’s something close to my heart as well.” When families see ‘The Wonderful Winter of Oz,’ at the Civic Auditorium this year, they will go on a fantastic adventure along with Dorothy as much as they will relive their happiest childhood memories of growing up with Kermit and the Muppets. All of which makes for a Christmas experience that is at once exciting and heartwarming.

2019 LA Art Fair Preview The art fair season is fast approaching, with huge exhibitions in London, Singapore and Switzerland coming up soon, but that doesn’t mean you need to travel far to see great art – the 2019 LA Fairs are just around the corner. The number of fairs has been growing as dealers are selling more and more inventory at these events, however, you don’t have to buy any art to enjoy the fairs! Think of them as pop-up museums with something for every taste. At the larger art fairs including the LA Art Show, Art Contemporary LA and the Frieze LA you can find all the big name contemporary and cutting edge artists you might find at a museum including a full schedule of event programming, whereas at the smaller venues such as stARTup LA, The Other Art Fair, SUPEFINE LA or Felix you’ll find a more tightly curated set of artists that pay for exhibition space. Many of these artists don’t have gallery representation and are available at much more affordable prices. Admission

to the smaller venues ranges between $10 and $15 versus $20 to $30 for the larger exhibitions. The opening night of most of the fairs features a VIP party that often has food, entertainment and in some cases benefits a charity. The LA Art Show (laartshow.com), at the LA Convention Center, runs from Jan. 23 – 27, 2019. The VIP party is on Jan. 23. This mega-
show is the largest of the LA art fairs and features modern and contemporary works from around the world displayed in over 200,000-square-feet of exhibition space. The website details the vast daily programing (exhibits, discussions, lectures and parties). My advice is too get there early for easy on-site parking and wear very comfortable shoes – there are acres of

walking and art to see! Make sure to buy tickets on-line if possible because there are potentially long lines if you buy at the door. General admission at $33 is steep, but you can buy a four-day pass for $65. Art Contemporary Los Angeles (artlosangelesfair. com), at the Barker Hanger in Santa Monica runs from Feb. 13 – 18, 2019 (VIP Preview
is on Feb. 13). As the name suggests, the focus here is squarely on contemporary art from galleries around the world. I would say the art works here tend to be less conventional and at times more conceptual than Art LA which encompasses a broader spectrum of styles. It features a full slate of programming including discussions, performance and hands on
activities. Parking is available across the street and the early bird avoids lines. On-site food and drink is available. Frieze Los Angeles, (frieze.com/fairs/frieze-losangeles) will take place this year at the Paramount Picture Studios, located in Hollywood between Feb. 15th and 17, 2019. Please note there is NO on-site parking and they suggest you take Uber or a public transportation given limited street parking. Frieze LA is brought to LA by the New York, London and Paris producers of the Frieze international art fairs and Frieze Magazine. Seventy of the world’s most significant and forward thinking galleries will be exhibiting in a custom structure designed by the architect Kulapat Yantrasast. career as a police cadet, Perez worked various assignments throughout the organization which included patrol, community relations, internal affairs, special enforcement section, SWAT, special investigations unit, and the counter terrorism unit. He has served in command of all three PPD divisions: Strategic Services, Field Operations and Criminal Investigations. This humble, personable, and highly decorated chief of police is dedicated to the community with numerous commissions and committees that help him educate the community at large through his unique experience as a Pasadena police officer. “It’s evolution of critical thinking,” according to Perez. Not every great idea has worked but Perez points out that we learn more from our mistakes and that ultimately strengthens our moral fiber. There are three main areas of importance in police work, according to Perez: - Administrative training policy. - Operations with four divisions and 14 sections. - Community engagement. Highlighting these areas,
Perez points out the importance of his “lessons of experience” and the vital role the department must play in transparency, open and honest community dialogue and the all-important staff retention. Perez will oversee a department with 325 employees and an annual budget of $82 million. As interim chief of police, Perez created a Community Advisory Committee, comprised of Pasadena residents, to work with the PPD on issues important to the community including the use of body cameras, use of force, and neighborhood policing. While overall crime is reduced within city limits, homeless growth “will not go away anytime soon,” Perez concedes. Officers have to deal with a growing problem, perhaps due in part to the Gold Line making area cities easily accessible. This, combined with people sleeping outside businesses and basic sanitary conditions has made officers learn to be a conduit between business owners and the homeless; and at the same time hopefully help the homeless community with education. Helping those individuals know there are people in the
City of Pasadena who really do care and want to help is a large task but Pasadena officers are equipped with extraordinary knowledge and resources to help those who need it most. “Serving in the Pasadena Police Department for the last 30 years alongside tremendous men and women has been the honor of a lifetime,” said Perez. “To have the opportunity to lead our department, to help enhance our relationships with the community and to use innovation and hard work to keep the city safe, is truly an honor. We will conduct ourselves with the utmost of integrity and professionalism and we will be a safety net for every member of the Pasadena community whom we serve.” Perez holds a doctorate in public administration from North Central University, a master’s degree in behavior science from California State Dominguez Hills and a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Mountain State University. He serves on the executive board of the Patron’s Saints Foundation. Perez, 52, is married to Norma Perez and they have fraternal twins, Josh and Jake.

Former Huntington Memorial Nurses File Suit Against Hospital Former Labor and Delivery (L&D) Department nurses of Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, Martha Beltran and Veronica Loving, filed a suit against the hospital alleging discrimination and retaliation. According to attorneys for the women, after the L&D department hired two new supervisors, Black and Latina nurses and a Black doctor began to experience discrimination by being: singled out, targeted, harassed, provided poor performance evaluations, removed from advisory boards and not selected for promotions. So far, 13 nurses have signed a letter lodging an
internal complaint of discrimination with the hospital. According to these attorneys, no investigation has been conducted yet. Kevin Blair, a.k.a. “Wood,” 47, who pleaded guilty in September to one count of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute cocaine and heroin, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Christina A. source in Los Angeles, arranged to have drug couriers from Detroit fly to Los Angeles, and then had them return to Detroit with the narcotics concealed in their luggage, according to court documents. Blair also directed a co-conspirator to book airline tickets with his credit cards and directed another co-conspirator to arrange for the couriers’ ground transportation and lodging.

represent,” Vice Mayor John J. Kennedy, representing District 3, said. “I’m hoping that we’re moving in a similar vein to Heritage Square South.” The council had a choice between six concept options presented to them by staff, including plan “A,” a concept focused primarily on housing and reflecting the intentions of the original project with 60 to 70 units, 100 percent of which would be used for very low-income seniors. That option was turned down in favor of the mixed-use
concept “C” that maximizes housing and commercial space, but with an “affordable mix TBD.” According to a city report, Pasadena has more than 650 homeless seniors, making the senior subpopulation the largest group of homeless individuals as well as the fastest growing, up 28 percent in the last two years. The city hopes that by targeting this vulnerable demographic it can meet a crucial need in the homeless population as well escape backlash from locals who may support homelessness relief efforts so long as they
are “not in my back yard.” “Recent experience following the adoption of the city’s hotel/motel conversion ordinance, indicates that adjacent residents often have concerns regarding the placement of housing for formerly homeless individuals,” a staff report read. “By focusing on seniors, staff believes that many of the concerns can be addressed.” Read More at, PasadenaIndependent.com under News

Christmastime at Pasadena’s Mayfield Junior School Means Giving and Celebrating The Christmas and advent season at Mayfield Junior School (MJS) holds many wonderful traditions and opportunities for giving and sharing. As a Catholic school, this is an important time to reflect and celebrate for its students and faculty. Each year an advent prayer service opens the season. During the service students learn about the symbolism of the advent wreath and create one that will be lit throughout the month. For nearly 18 years, MJS families led by eighth graders have participated in the Christmas Adopt-a-Family project providing Christmas gifts for the women and
children at Good Shepherd Shelter in Los Angeles. Wish lists are collected in November and in December gifts are carefully wrapped and placed in large boxes for delivery. The boxes are blessed at the annual Mothers’ Christmas Luncheon, during which eighth graders join their mothers and seventh graders assist in serving. A live nativity portrayed by second graders and musical performances complete the celebration. What was started over 30 years ago as a fun sculpture project for sixth graders to gain experience with balance, proportion and design, is now a middle school rite of passage and a shared experience for
hundreds of Mayfield graduates. Not only do students look forward to making elves but parents save them as keepsakes for use year after year as part of their holiday home décor. Many are in need of a few minor repairs so a new tradition was started: The Parents of Alumni Elf Workshop. Art teacher Penny Wong opens her classroom to parents of alumni and while the elves undergo repair, everyone enjoys the fellowship and festive spirit. Night Out and Chill at 38 Degrees

N
ew(ish) kid on the block 38 Degrees Ale House and Grill quietly took up residence in Old Town Monrovia back in 2015—although the level of chill depends on the night. On a Sunday evening, the bar is pleasantly relaxed, with ‘90s era music servings as the noninvasive soundtrack to a great meal, cocktails and (you guessed it) 38 craft beer selections on tap. If a livelier scene is your thing, consider the upscale-yet-carefree bar for your New Year’s Eve celebration—this time the ‘80s will be alive and well with movies, music and a costume contest to boot. It’s one of many elements that make the bar attractive to locals. “38 Degrees was founded in 2007 in Alhambra, and we were drawn to Monrovia by its charming downtown and
the wonderful people that live there,” says James Boyle, head chef at 38 Degrees. An East Coast native, Boyle came to Los Angeles to pursue music by night and chef skills by day. In the space of just 9 years, he went from slinging pizza in New Jersey to taking up the mantle of head chef at 38 Degrees. And four months back, he had the opportunity to become co-owner—and took it. “It’s been an awesome choice for me. I’ve always loved cooking and the
restaurant industry,” says Boyle. His tenure at the bar has allowed him to refine the menu: dubbed “New American” and featuring an array of smoky barbecued meats, a killer mac and cheese and lighter pizzas, tacos, sandwiches and more. On our Sunday in question, the soup of the day is a housemade pozole, which does not disappoint—made that much tastier with a solid bar program. Besides the outstanding beer selection (kept at an almost-icy 38 degrees),
diners can choose from custom cocktails like the “Despacito,” a crowdpleasing riff on a margarita with a spicy kick. The menu benefits not only from Boyle & co.’s input but feedback from diners themselves. So far, that feedback has been positive. “The response in the town has been overwhelmingly good. I always love getting a note on a bill or check saying how somebody’s enjoyed their time here, and that we’ve exceeded their expecta-
tions,” says Boyle. He draws his menu inspiration from fellow chefs, too. “I find the best way to get out of the rut is going to dine at other restaurants or to travel—I specifically like going to Europe and to Japan,” says the chef. “Seeing things from a different perspective always helps open up the mind to new creative possibilities.” With more creations like Tiki Night and their Backyard BBQ Party on the horizon along with catering services nearly
ready to roll, 2019 is looking bright for the staff and regulars at 38 Degrees. “I think here at 38 degrees we have the full package. We prepare our food in-house, even down to our bread and bacon,” says Boyle. “With independently owned craft beer and fresh in-house made mixed drinks paired with our great service … that’s been the recipe for our success.” 38 Degrees is located at 110 E. Colorado Blvd. in Old Town Monrovia. For more information, contact the 38 Degrees team at 38degreesalehouse.com/ monrovia | (626) 408-5544 and follow along on Instagram and Facebook @38degreesmon. While a sales tax revenue generator such as a replacement grocery store would have been preferred by many at city hall as well as the landlord, the reality of the commercial real estate market across the country as it relates to big box retail forced everyone involved to reconsider.

Sightseeing and Swimming in St. Gallen, Switzerland
Travel Greg aragon gregsgetawaytravel@gmail.com
L
ike a prop from Disneyland or a Harry Potter movie, the Abbey Library in St. Gallen is a magical, surreal place. But, unlike fantasy lands this historic bookroom is all real, down to the last 1,400-year-old handwritten manuscript and 2,000-year-old mummy. Last summer I discovered St. Gallen, along with its famed library, as I made my way through Eastern Switzerland, bound for Lake Constance. My visit began with a cab ride from St. Gallen Train Station to the classy, 113-room Einstein St. Gallen Hotel (einstein. ch), where I checked into a suite overlooking town. The elegant, first-class hotel is located next to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Abbey District St. Gallen. Highlights of the property include the Einstein Gourmet fine dining restaurant; and the state-of-the-art Migros Fitness Park Einstein, with an ultra-modern wellness area, an atmospheric pool, an ice grotto, steam bath

and full-service spa. My room at the Einstein was flowing with regal charm and covered in rich, glossy wood and shiny Italian marble. Besides a postcard view of 18th century structures, the room offered a big bathroom with shower and tub, free Wi-Fi, huge TV, and a comfortable queensized bed. The room’s best feature was its proximity to old town. I took advantage of this the next morning
when I met my city tour guide in the lobby. The walking tour began at the statue of Irish monk Gallus, who founded a hermitage in the area in 612. A hundred years later an incredible Baroque abbey was constructed in his honor at the site and named St. Gallen. Today the abbey consists of an incredible cathedral, the abbey library and a series of old monastery buildings. The abbey precinct was declared
a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site in 1983. The cathedral, built in 1755, is a masterpiece of baroque architecture. It is highlighted by a doubletower façade standing 223 feet. The interior features giant pillars, unique wooden confessionals, hand-painted ceilings and walls, stained glass windows, and priceless sculptures. But the centerpiece of the abbey is St. Gall's
Abbey Library, which many consider the finest secular Rococo hall in the world, replete with magnificent burnished woodwork, undulating balconies and ceiling frescoes. Built in 1758, the library contains 160,000 priceless books and manuscripts, as well as an unforgettable interior. To enter the library, we stashed our cameras and put on fluffy slippers to protect the original inlay wooden flooring, which happens to
be an exact mirror copy of the ceiling. As I slid across the creaky surface, I passed 1,000-year-old Latin texts; books handwritten by monks in the late 1700s; the oldest blueprint in the world, created in 819; an eighth-century bill of sale for the abbey property; and one of the oldest maps in the world from the year 850. Changing exhibitions show handwritten and illuminated texts, including Bibles, liturgical works, prayer books and biographies of saints from as early as the eighth century A.D.; and works depicting the daily lives of resident monks, which provide insight into abbey life from the ninth century through the Middle Ages. Chef Michael Hung, 2017 and 2018 Masters of Taste culinary master, will be the event’s first-time host chef. Pasadena Soccer Exhibits Gritty Effort to Upend Streaking Marshall
I
t was an epiphanic afternoon for Pasadena boys’ soccer as the Bulldogs delivered their best performance thus far, grounding the once-undefeated Marshall Eagles 4-0 on Tuesday. “I think we played a very nice game today and we were able to absorb a bit of the pressure at the beginning because (Marshall) played really well the first 20 minutes,” said 27-year Pasadena Coach Cherif Zein. “We have a good team this year and we’re still missing four starters that will be cleared by January so you could imagine.” Coming into the game, the Bulldogs donned a middleof-the-road 3-3-1 record and
had not managed to find their footing yet. Marshall, on the other hand, was flying high as the Eagles were riding a 10-game win streak to open the season. However, everything seemed to change Tuesday afternoon as Marshall was shockingly dealt its first loss. And who better to do it than neighboring school Pasadena, which is located just one mile down Mountain Street. In the early stages of this fast-paced affair, the Eagles’ up-tempo offense and constant pressure kept the Bulldogs on their toes. It was evident Marshall was in control but Pasadena’s hardnosed defense made it difficult for the Eagles to finish their chances in the final third.
Thanks to its defense, Pasadena was able to take advantage in transition, which Marshall ultimately had no answers for. The first goal came when David Almanza scored straight from a corner kick as his cross curled over the Marshall keeper and into the back of the net for a 1-0 Bulldog lead. This goal immediately opened the playing field for Pasadena while also killing all of Marshall’s momentum. The Bulldogs continued to showcase their lethalness in the attacking third as their next three goals either came from a set piece or off a cross inside the box. Sophomore captain Andres Cervantes was the mastermind behind Pasadena’s offensive schemes,

creating plays while recording three assists for the likes of wingers Osmar Rojas and Christian Reyes. Pasadena experienced no troubles closing out its fourth
and biggest win of the season, which is something Zein feels the team can continue to build on. “We play a key game against Burroughs on
Thursday, which is the top of our league so if we do have a good result, it’ll be a good start to our second run in league, which will start back up in January,” Zein said.
Monrovia Wildcats to Regroup Before Embarking on League Campaign Monrovia boys’ soccer has seen better days as it wrapped up its mixed bag of a preseason last week before kicking off Rio Hondo League action at the turn of the new year. After starting their preseason 0-3, the Wildcats were able to salvage a nice 4-0 win against Nipomo during the Cats & Hounds tournament at Paso Robles High School. However, Monrovia dropped their next two games in that tournament which ultimately sent them home early. The Wildcats were able to make a better impression at their own tournament earlier this month as they opened it with two 1-0 wins over Gladstone and St. Paul. They did fall to La Cañada the following game

but bounced back to defeat Ayala 2-1. Last week, Monrovia drew twice with La Habra 3-3 and Pomona 1-1. Despite not getting a win, these results still bode well for the Wildcats as both La Habra (6-2-3) and Pomona

(3-1-3) are having solid seasons. The team will return to action for their first Rio Hondo League game against La Canada on Jan. 5. The Wildcats will be positioned to defend their league title from last season.
Despite clawing their way back into the game to force overtime, the Arcadia Apaches couldn’t muster a win against a scrappy Monrovia squad on Tuesday at Arcadia High School. – Photo by Aaron Valdez / Beacon Media News
Arcadia’s Furious Comeback Falls Just Short in Loss to Monrovia By the end of the first half in this match-up between Arcadia and Monrovia boys’ basketball, it appeared the game was already done and dusted. The Wildcats had opened up a sizable 34-25 lead as they overwhelmed the Apaches with their physicality and toughness. Monrovia’s scrappy defense bullied Arcadia into multiple turnovers, which led to easy transition points for the Wildcats. Every time an Apache maneuvered into
lane, the Wildcats would collapse their defense and alter every shot attempt they could. It was a heated battle all throughout but it seemed Arcadia was going to fold over any second. However, the Apaches quickly regrouped coming out of the locker room and rallied in the final quarter to force the game into overtime. Arcadia held Monrovia to a mere four points in the fourth while racking up 12 crucial points of their own to keep the game alive.
Unluckily for the Apaches, their effort to get back in the win column after losing back-to-back games fell short as Monrovia escaped with a slim 55-51 victory. It was a big sigh of relief for the Wildcats, being that their record still sits below .500 at 5-7. As for the Apaches, they’re still above water with a 7-5 overall record but have not found their rhythm in Pacific League action, standing in sixth place with a 1-3 record.

Los Angeles Based Musician Arrested on Federal Wire Fraud Charge
regional news Starting a new business? Go to filedba.com Arcadia City Notices NOTICE INVITING PROPOSALS
A professional drummer who has served as a musical director for the United Nations and the Arsenio Hall television show has been arrested on a felony wire fraud charge for allegedly embezzling $750,000 from a charity concert for homeless children and using the pilfered money to buy his ex-wife a house in Calabasas. Robin DiMaggio, 47, of Woodland Hills, was arrested Friday afternoon. According to the criminal complaint that led to his arrest, DiMaggio said he would assist the Peace for You Peace for Me Foundation, a Bulgaria-based nonprofit organization, with organizing a charity concert in the Bulgarian capital of Sofia that was designed to raise money for and raise awareness of homeless and displaced children from conflict zones throughout the world. DiMaggio allegedly told the Foundation in a series of communications that he would be able to secure several celebrities to perform at the charity concert. On August 5, 2016, the foundation’s financial sponsor allegedly wired $750,000 to a DiMaggiocontrolled account as a guarantee for future payments related to artists performing at the charity concert. Prior to the money transfer, DiMaggio allegedly represented that he would not spend the money, which he would place in an escrow account and only later use to pay artists who would per-form at the concert. DiMaggio never set up the escrow account, the complaint alleges. Instead, several days later, he deposited the $750,000 into his personal bank account and used the money to make payments on cars, credit card debt and his living expenses. Within weeks of the wire transfer, DiMaggio allegedly used $251,370 of the funds to purchase a Calabasas home for his ex-wife. He also wired $150,000 of the funds to a bank account in the name of his company, DiMagic Entertainment, Inc. None of the transfers was sent to artists or their management in connection with the charity concert in Bulgaria, according to the complaint. If he were to be convicted of the wire fraud charge, DiMaggio would face a statutory maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison.

Reader Responds to ‘Why the Rush to Build Apartments in Monrovia?’ Since it’s inevitable that our species will continue to multiply, it comes as no surprise to me that the world’s population has tripled since my birth and that our entire planet will soon be like a crowded elevator with standing room only. I wonder how many people still believe that the mantra “the more the merrier” is a good one when it means unlimited births? Frankly, although I never envisioned myself living in a world where I’d have to sleep while standing up, I suppose that’s something else I’ll just have to learn to do. - David Q. MONROVIA

Our daughter was born here. Now she is 1-year-old. For all the time we live here we were faced with sincere and kind treatment only [sic]. That’s so important for us, refugee immigrants. We give thanks to: - All those persons who keep the historical and cultural atmosphere in Pasadena, including but not limited [to:] the Rose Parade team for the bright and beautiful show, the Huntington Library Art Collections and Botanical Gardens for interesting exhibitions and events, the Rose Bowl for wellorganized events, etc. - Policemen and firefighters for fast and qualified help; who provide safety and security to the residents of the city. Accurate, clean look [sic], well trained professionals protect [peace] and rights of each individual. We appreciate it a lot. And special thanks to firefighters for [their] help with recent wild fires. - Doctors, pediatricians and nurses who provide excellent medical care for pregnant women and infants. - Individuals who keep
educational traditions teachers. Namely to the Pasadena City College teachers for [the] English as a second language and parents education classes which we attend. - Office workers who every day help us with documents, registration procedures, job search, traffic support and providing useful advice for justarrived immigrants. And we would like to show our particular gratitude to Ms. L [full name redacted] and her family who hosted us upon arrival to the U.S. and so helped us to adapt to a new life for the first year - not an easy time. Now we look into the future with hope and optimism. And every day we do our best to ensure our family development and proper parenthood. Despite facts that now we have to live in a trailer and land for trailer parking is transferred to a new owner that lead us to look for another place, we believe in coming 2019 the new stage will start in our life [sic]. We will find a place for our trailer parking. We will have a home. One day our daughter will go to school here. Maybe we will have more kids. And one day they, U.S. citizens, will say “My parents have arrived in far 2017 [sic]. They were met with kind people here. And now it’s time for me to carry on this nice tradition to express gratitude and help others.” Merry Christmas and happy holidays! - Thankful Resident PASADENA
Don’t Fear the Dentist! Dr. Kenneth canzoneri, D.D.S.
Q:
I am terrified of going to the dentist. I can’t even get myself to call for an appointment without having an anxiety attack. My teeth are very sensitive to cold and my gums bleed when I brush them. I have a couple of teeth that have broken. What can I do? Signed: Scared of the Dentist
Dear Scared of the Dentist, First it is important to know that you are not the only one who has a dental phobia. I would guess that 90 percent of the people that go to the dentist are either nervous or outright frightened. The first thing I tell patients is that dentistry is not supposed to hurt. Thanks to modern anesthetic dentists have a great ability to get the gums and or teeth very numb. I believe that the biggest cause of fear in a dental office is the “fear of the unknown.” I tell a patient at each step of a procedure what they are going
to experience such as what they will feel, hear and/or smell. To mask the smell we use aromatherapy. To mask the sounds of dentistry we use head phones attached to a TV with local stations, relaxation videos or DVDs from a library in the office. Another aspect of dental anxiety is the fear of lack of control. In our office we help our patients feel in control by having them raise a hand as a signal for us to stop. The most important part of treating dental phobics is “empathy.” I understand. My blood pressure sky rockets the minute I walk into a doctor’s office and doesn’t go down until I’m in my car
driving away. It is vital for every member of a dental team to be both empathetic and sympathetic to what a patient is experiencing from the moment they arrive in the office to the moment they leave. Have faith dental phobics and remember “Don’t fear the dentist.” About Dr. Canzoneri: Dr. Kenneth Canzoneri maintains a private family practice in Arcadia, CA. Time to ‘Simonize’ Your Home Do you love Siamese cats with stunning blue eyes? Or, do you just want a big boy who loves the simple things in life - being pet, napping, and basking in a sunny window - but who also has a playful streak? Then Simon, born in 2015, is the cat for you. This big boy is playful, perhaps catching up on the “kittenhood” he never had
since he was abandoned on the streets at a very young age. He's very trusting of people and somewhat of a big baby. He is FIV+ but needs no meds, a condition easily managed as long as he is kept indoors. When cats are introduced properly, there is nothing to fear with FIV. Simon would make a wonderful pet for almost any adult
or maybe with very gentle, older children. Seal point Siamese cats have very dark, almost black, sealbrown points, with facial mask, ears, tail, paws, nose and paw pads all in the same dark brown color. Call (626) 449-1717to meet him. See more pictures and his video at lifelineforpets.org/seniors--spneeds.html.

s we approach the New Year, there’s a lot of talk about setting goals. They may be related to career, family, fitness or other personal pursuits. It’s interesting to think about which goals will be achieved and which will eventually be shelved. Is success always related to the particular goal – or to the person achieving it? And what sets the achievers apart from everyone else? My belief is that almost always, the achievers possess something a little different than others. It’s not a MBA, money or good looks (although those don’t hurt). In fact, it’s cheaper and easier to come by. The characteristic that sets them apart is they are able to live their lives without fear. It’s not that they don’t have concerns.

It’s not that failure doesn’t cross their minds, or that they don’t worry. But, they are able to try new things without letting their fears stop them. On a number of occasions, I’ve witnessed people who never finished college land a professionallevel job faster than their degreed peers. On paper they may have appeared to be less qualified but in reality they had a lot to offer and they were willing to put themselves out there. I’m certain that in some of these situations,
the fact that they had little to lose and everything to gain came into play. Read More at, ArcadiaWeekly.com, MonroviaWeekly.com, PasadenaIndependent.com under Opinion
