that had just been repaired. At the time the women were not considered members of the service, but rather civilian civil servants, and so she was accorded no military honors despite the fact that her work and that of the other 1,073 WASPs saved countless lives by testing aircraft among other things. Adopt A Family in Pasadena This Holiday Season Hillsides hopes to provide gifts and meals for 100 families in need Last year, a few months before the holidays, Miguel* lost his mother and sister in a car accident. He and his wife Maria* took in his sister’s two boys to raise. Around the same time, Maria learned she was pregnant with her fourth child. Miguel and Maria felt overwhelmed. Hillsides staff gave the family tools to reduce daily struggles and to help Miguel work through his grief. When the couple was told that their family had been selected to be part of Hillsides holiday Adopt a Family Program, they worried it was too good to be true. They wrote down a list of needed items – pajamas, underwear, sweaters, shoes, blankets, baby items, and a few toys for the children – not really believing their wishes would be answered. On Christmas morning, when the family opened

Sierra Madre PD is warning locals of the latest fraud alert warning for Los Angeles County residents. Scammers are masquerading as charity groups claiming to raise money for first responders, according to Steven Wang of the L.A. County District Attorney’s (DA) Office. According to the DA, people who want to help firstresponders should beware of crooks using a uniform to con others. In the Police and Firefighter
Charity Scam, fraudsters claim to represent organizations that benefit police, firefighters or other public safety personnel. But some charities spend most of their donations on administrative costs or don’t use the funds the way they promised. Others may not be legitimate charities at all. Just because an organization has “police” or “firefighter” in its name, doesn’t mean that it actually will use the money to assist these public servants.
The DA offered the following tips: - Research the organization; confirm a California charity’s status at rct.doj. ca.gov. - Reputable charities tell how money is spent and if the donation is tax deductible. - Don’t give donations in cash, by wire or as gift cards. To watch an informative video, visit da.co.la.ca.us/ inside-LADA/investigatepolice-firefighter-charitiesbefore-donating.

Every month, thousands of homeowners are faced with the stressful dilemma of whether to buy first or sell first. You see, if you buy before selling, you could run the risk of owning two homes. Or, just as bad, if you sell first, you could end up homeless. It’s what insiders in the industry call the Real Estate Catch 22, and it’s an extremely anxious position to be in. This financial and emotional tightrope is one you usually have to walk alone because most agents have no way of helping you with this predicament. But one local realtor is using a unique
Guaranteed Sale Program which solves this dilemma. This program guarantees the sale of your present home before you take possession of your new one. If your home doesn’t sell in 120 days, they will buy it from you themselves for the previously agreed price ensuring that you never get caught in the Real Estate Catch 22. Before you hire any professional, you should research the market to find out who can do the best job for you. When interviewing agents, find out what kind of guarantee they are willing to give you with respect to the selling of your home. Unfortunately, you’ll find PAID ADVERTISEMENT
that most agents simply cannot make such a guarantee. To help you learn more about this program and how it can make your move less stressful, a FREE special report has been prepared entitled “How to Avoid Getting Stuck with Two Homes”. To order a FREE Special Report, call tollfree 1-888-300-4632 and enter 1022. Did You Know a U.S. President Received a Raccoon as a Thanksgiving Gift?
In 1926, President Calvin Coolidge received a live raccoon as a Thanksgiving gift. Vinnie Joyce, the Mississippi man who sent him the gift, called the raccoon “toothsome” as it was meant to be part of that year’s dinner. However, the Coolidge family adopted the raccoon and named it Rebecca. President Coolidge was later asked if the raccoon was edible, to which the president responded by saying that it might be for some but not for him. The new pet joined the “Pennsylvania Avenue Zoo” that included a black bear from Mexico, a wallaby, a pair of lion cubs named Tax Reduction and Budget Bureau, and a pygmy hippo named Billy gifted to the Coolidges by Harvey Firestone.

The Angeles Chorale’s concert season will take you on a musical journey through Italy, France and Argentina without leaving Pasadena. This diverse and exciting repertoire of music begins with “Christmas in Italy” on Dec. 8 at 7:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church of Pasadena (500 E. Colorado Blvd.). Artistic Director/Conductor John Sutton promises, “you will
be surprised and moved this season.” The concert begins with Antonio Vivaldi’s rich and moving “Gloria.” Next, the Chorale will take you on a musical journey with John Rutter’s jubilant “Gloria.” A perfect contrast to Vivaldi, this contemporary piece was composed in 1974. The triumphant “Adestes Fideles” will begin the second half of the concert. Then, “Gesu Bambino” and Lara Hoggard’s treatment of “Personent Hodie” both regale the reason for the season. In addition, the Chorale will bring you Erik Esenvalds’ powerful “Only in Sleep” which explores the wonderment of childhood and Randall Thomp-
son’s hauntingly beautiful “Alleluia.” And back as an audience favorite, the singalong tradition continues. Sutton says, “we will light a candle to hope, peace, faith, and love… everything our world needs right now.” The Angeles Chorale will dazzle you. “’Christmas in Italy’ gets to the heart of choral music,” says Sutton, “it lifts audiences to our truest calling as human beings…to love one another.” Tickets are $30 if purchased in advance online or $35 at the door. Group and family discounts are available. For more information, visit angeleschorale.org or call (818) 591-1735.
Theatre 360’s Moana Jr. Sheds Light on the Power of Theatre The 2016 Disney animation of Moana is well known for its brave protagonist Moana, who conquers obstacles on her journey and discovers her own identity along the way. Recently, Theatre 360, an award winning children’s theatre located in Pasadena, has been invited to participate in the Disney Theatrical Pilot Productions Program to put on the musical Moana Jr. With a wonderful cast full of students ranging from ages 7 to 16, it just so happens 11-year-old Karina Alvarez, who is cast as Moana, has a paralleled journey similar to that of the character she is playing. It was not too long ago when Alvarez and her family had been through their own journey of tough circumstances where they had to put on a brave face. Just last year, in September 2017,

Pasadena's Cherished Holiday Concert Returns With The Pasadena Symphony The Pasadena Symphony’s annual Holiday Candlelight concert returns to All Saints Church on Saturday, Dec. 15. Having sold out for the past seven years, the symphony will offer two performances to meet community demand at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. The architecturally exquisite and acoustically sonorous All Saints Church, Pasadena’s equivalent of a European cathedral, provides the perfect setting to hear your holiday favorites - all performed by candlelight. Audiences are going to love each and every moment of this cherished holiday tradition. New this year, Pasadena Symphony Music Director David Lockington will take the rostrum as conductor, leading an array of choruses including the Los Angeles
Children’s Chorus, the Donald Brinegar Singers and the L.A. Bronze Handbell Ensemble, set against the backdrop of the Pasadena Symphony. Special guest Valarie Pettiford will accompany the orchestra as vocalist. A true triple-threat, the Tonynominated actor, dancer and singer has appeared on Broadway and the West End in “Fosse,” “West Side Story” and “Chicago” among others and has numerous television credits under her belt including “The Blacklist,” “Blackish,” “True Blood” and “Treme.” This year’s program has something for everyone to ring in the holiday season, from traditional holiday classics to popular standards. Hear “Carol of the Bells,” “Baby It’s Cold Outside,” “Have Yourself a Merry Little
Christmas,” “Hallelujah!” and many more favorites. The venue will again offer fully assigned individual seating throughout All Saints’ glorious interior, ensuring that the audience can enjoy their experience with ease and have a well-deserved break from the hustle and bustle of the season. lost their lives in services. These women were not recognized for their service, but Monrovia recognized Scott when her body was shipped home, not by the military, but she was accorded full honors by the City of Monrovia. The day of her funeral businesses in town closed and all the members of the Monrovia Police Department and Fire Department served as her pall bearers and honorary pall bearers escorting her body to its final resting place in Live Oak cemetery. Fortunately Alyse Rohrer survived the war despite doing the same sort of test Scott was doing, but at another airbase in Texas. She attended the Neighborhood Treasure Tribute to Scott on Saturday when the memorial to her was unveiled. Although she was in the class after Scott’s in training, she never met her, as she was assigned to another base, Perrin Field outside Sherman, Texas. She said that while she was at Perrin a woman pilot she knew well died in a similar accident to the one that killed Scott. She said that after the death she and her flight partner were in the hanger crying their eyes out when their commanding officer came in “looking like he wanted to cry himself” she said. asadena is full of experiences worth waiting for. Take Union Street Sandwich Company, for instance: slinging stellar sandwiches since 2015 under the careful guidance of owner Stacy Ober. Yet even with Ober’s 30-plus years of culinary experience, she took her time to ensure the shop would succeed. “It was never my dream to own a restaurant, other than the far-off fantasy that many talk about, like moving to a seaside village and selling blueberry muffins,” said Ober. “Opening USSC was the idea of a dear friend—and grew into a leap of faith.” “I waited three months prior to signing the lease to sit inside the space. I studied
what the customers bought. I watched patterns of traffic. And then I asked friends and colleagues in the business to talk me out of this crazy proposition!” she joked. But all those observations paid off, as Ober collected small but significant ways to improve the shop. “Since we eat with our eyes and nose, my menu is focused on eating food that makes us feel good; emotionally and physically,” she explained. “What distinguishes Union Street Sandwich Co. from other sandwich shops is we’re actually cooking here. With the exception of our imported Italian meats, all of our meats are organic and roasted daily on-site.” Ober dipped into her own home-life for inspiration too—the brisket (which is sublime) and even biscotti are from her childhood recipe box.
“We are not fast food. We’re a place to hang out, take a break from work, eat something delicious and healthy and just relax. We want to visit with you,” said Ober. “I have communal tables, a large, squishy chair from home, and wonderful outdoor seating with big umbrellas. I want customers to feel like they're at my home or in my backyard.” Union Street Sandwich Company is located at 109 E. Union St. in Pasadena. MUSD Adds Spanish Dual Immersion Program at Second Elementary School Monrovia Unified School District (MUSD) will expand its highly popular Spanish dual-language program to Wild Rose Elementary in August of 2019 for transitional-kindergarteners and kindergarteners. Parents can attend one of two Program Showcase sessions discussing the new option on Wednesday, Dec. 5 at 8:30 a.m. or 6 p.m. at Wild Rose Elementary School Cafeteria, 232 Jasmine Ave. Both sessions will be presented in English and Spanish; child care will be available. Dual immersion provides native English speakers and
English learners the opportunity to develop biliteracy and bilingualism through standards-based curriculum. Research shows dual-immersion students gain significant understanding of cultures associated with the language, show overall cognitive advances and earn stronger grades. The program has been shown to narrow the achievement gap between English learners and their peers. Situated in the eastern side of the district, Wild Rose joins Monroe as the second elementary school within Monrovia Unified to offer the cutting-edge

If a family resides within the boundaries for Mayflower or Monroe, enrollment into the dual-language program will be at Monroe. Wild Rose would be the dual-language enrollment option for those who live within the boundaries of Wild Rose or Bradoaks. Families living within the Plymouth boundaries can choose to enroll at either Wild Rose or Monroe. The

Bone Kettle Serves Up Delicious Southeast Asian Cuisine With a Twist Brianna CHU & May s. ruiz MayChu@att.net
B
one Kettle, an Indonesian fusion restaurant on North Raymond Avenue, has recently joined the numerous food establishments dotting the streets in Old Pasadena. It is co-owned by the Tjahyadi Brothers, Eric and Executive Chef Erwin, who immigrated to the San Gabriel Valley from Indonesia with their parents over two decades ago. After 20 years, Chef Erwin went back to Indonesia on a quest of self-discovery. Through his travels in his birthplace, he reconnected with his childhood as he once more smelled the fragrance of spices that flavored the complex dishes he grew up
with. That reminder of his heritage inspired Chef Erwin to open a restaurant which deliciously blends heirloom recipes from his mother’s and grandmother’s cookbooks with local California ingredients and French classical techniques. Brianna’s review of a recent Tasting Dinner speaks to Chef Erwin’s love of food and culinary mastery. You can expect an Indonesian and Southeast Asian food experience when coming to the Bone Kettle, a small, family-owned restaurant and bar with a modern and chic atmosphere. It’s only about a year and a half old, and full of surprising contrasts. While it has a young and modern feel not only in its decor, but also by its playlist - when we came in, there was relaxed electronic music softly playing - the

restaurant feels homey and comfortable, too, as the head chef’s father served us plates that his son had just made, explaining to us what the dish was. One of the restaurant’s
favorites, the oxtail dumpling, is understandably popular. The dumpling was served in deeply savory and rich but also slightly acidic sauce, complementing the succulent oxtail dumpling, whose

filling dripped with au jus and marinade. The fried chicken wings with Thai chilis and a sweet sauce are another of the Bone Kettle’s popular dishes, for a reason - the wing was perfectly crispy, the sweetness from the sauce woken up by the kick of the Thai chili, and the chicken was juicy and perfectly cooked. The restaurant's famous bone broth is incredibly rich but eminently drinkable. Every sip is clearly imbued with the incredible flavor of bone marrow. This is not a broth that is merely a vessel for other ingredients - it has its own flavor that demands attention. When servers circled back with second rounds of bone broth, hands from all tables immediately reached towards the tray for seconds. As the restaurant is sandwiched between a burger
joint and a barbecue place, some might think that the Bone Kettle would struggle to compete with such classic American favorites. However, I'd argue that the Bone Kettle is perfectly situated to exemplify the diversity of flavors in Southern California. It’s the kind of place where I'd want to take my girlfriends to on a weekend for some good food, and catch up on our weeks. I can’t wait to go back and see what other delights are on the full menu! Brianna Chu, a guest opinion writer for Beacon Media, was born and raised in Pasadena. She loves to cook and to eat, is a lifelong viewer of Food Network, and enthusiastically introduced the tradition of Thanksgiving dinners to her British and European friends while earning her degree at the University of St Andrews.

T
he Pie Hole in Old Pasadena serves up the kinds of pies that are not found at regular cafés, diners, or restaurants. That’s because the items on its menu were created by Becky Grasley who uses recipes that have been passed on from one generation to the next. It was in October 2011 that Grasley fulfilled her life-long dream of opening her first pie shop. With co-founder Sean Brennan, whose restaurant experience balanced her pie-making skills, she established their first café at the Arts District in Los Angeles known as Bloom Square. They named it The Pie Hole and it became an instant hit. To date, there are ten locations – eight in the Los Angeles area and two in Tokyo, Japan. Besides signature pot pies, individual pot pies, and hand pies, the café offers galettes, breakfast quiches, and salads. Just in time for pie season, they’ve also introduced the aptly named Pie Holes, snack-able delectations that are great for eating on the go. Hot and iced coffee – either espresso or their own specialty blend, specialty and seasonal specialty lattes – are wonderful accompaniments to all the food items.

The Pie Hole’s chicken pot pie with a side of salad and a slice of salted caramel pecan. – Photo by May S. Ruiz / Beacon Media News
Brianna’s review below provides highlights about the food and ambience. Tucked into the back corner of Indiana Colony’s marketplace space, The Pie Hole sits amidst the company of a juice bar, an ice cream vendor, and a tea and herbselling stall. It seems geared towards attracting young adults who want the ready availability of caffeine, food, and WiFi of a Starbucks, but with a hipper vibe. The staff were friendly and helpful, and we received our food shortly after ordering. The Pie Hole's chicken pot pie is a twist on the classic - with the cornbread incorporated into their filling and the inclusion of red bell peppers in lieu of the staple carrots and peas. Their shepherd’s pie is more traditional, complete with a topping of mashed potatoes. Perhaps it was just a fluke of the batches, but we found the shepherd’s pie a tad too salty
for our palate, and the salted caramel pecan pie fell a little on the sweet side for May. However, the banana cream pie was everything I hoped for; a big plus for me was that the pudding tasted homemade, without the slight aftertaste of the store-bought variety. The banana slices were visible and texturally present in the pie, and the shards of toffee on top provided a welcome pop of sweetness and textural contrast. The consistent high point, for me, was the pie crusts - which were buttery, flaky, and everything I've come to expect in a good pie crust. The newly-introduced pie holes were the perfect snack-size proportions. Both the caramel apple and blueberry were excellent. All in all, I would consider returning; and in fall, an afternoon outing in Old Pasadena definitely benefits from a good slice of pie.

I
've never been a big "light show" guy. But this changed last year when I experienced the all-new “Christmas in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter” at Universal Studios Hollywood. This is the most amazing and realistic, virtual reality-type light display I've ever seen. To celebrate the holiday season, the theme park has transformed "The Wizarding World of Harry Potter" attraction, including the "Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey" thrill ride, Hogwarts Castle and the surrounding Hogsmeade Village into a Christmas wonderland with snow, characters, decorations and a mesmerizing array of projection lights and images.
The adventure begins each night through Jan. 6, 2019 in Hogsmeade Village, where Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is illuminated with colorful imagery and impressive dimensional animations that dance across Hogwarts castle in tandem to a musical arrangement from the Harry Potter movies. The images are huge and incredibly real, with so much definition and vividness that I thought I was watching a giant television screen. To make the light parade even more rewarding, I suggest going on the "Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey" ride to start your day at Universal Studios. Interviewing is Not Hazing Angela COPELAND, angela@copelandcoaching.com

hen I was in college, I never joined a sorority. But, like you, I’ve heard some of the horror stories about what it can sometimes be like to become part of Greek life. For some (but not all) student led organizations hazing rituals are just a part of life. Looking back, it seems like they’re a silly college-aged tradition that have been left in the past. Somehow, these rituals are following us into adulthood. They’re showing up in the most unexpected place: the job interview. Some employers put candidates through stress interviews. They ask inappropriate or irrelevant questions in an effort to get a reaction from the job seeker. They’re interested
to see how you might react under stress. The answer often matters less than the reaction. I recently heard from a job seeker who was cursed at during a job interview in a confrontational way – in front of a group. The hiring manager was trying to get a reaction out of him. Other employers are asking candidates to do homework, lots of homework. It may come in the form of creating plans that the company may use. It may involve taking tests. Many of these tools are meant to help identify the most capable candidates but it often discounts the work experience a candidate has in favor of how well they perform under pressure on a particular day. In other situations, employers may put the candidate through physical stress. Perhaps they’re booked with back to back
travel and interviews with no time for bathroom breaks or rest. The most surprising interview trend I’ve seen lately that falls into this category is company-wide voting. Did you know that if you interview at a company, there’s a chance that the company’s employees will vote on whether or not they liked you, just after you leave the building? It might be one thing to ask folks if they have concerns with a candidate, and if they do what those concerns are, but in some organizations employees are given a simple yes or no choice. If anyone votes against a candidate, there’s a decent chance they will be kicked out of the process. A 96 percent increase in early syphilis diagnoses since 2011 can only be described as a scandal of the highest magnitude. That statistical tsunami clearly represents a lack of competent teaching. No one can deny that our society has been programmed since its beginning to enforce a puritanical way of conduct. But let’s face it – we’re now in the 21st century, and none of the enticements or exhortations we’ve tried to get
young people to abstain from sex is working. In my opinion, there are only three ways to prevent STI [sic] from spreading: education, education and education. Let’s leave churches and parochial schools to teach (or not teach) about sex in any way they choose. But a public school curriculum should include sex education with a realistic approach. Parents who are fearful that their children will lose their innocence by learning about sex shouldn’t worry. After all, isn’t it better that their offspring learn from a qualified teacher in a classroom, rather than from their peers who are also ignorant in that important subject? -David Q.

Reader Expresses Gratitude Dear Editor, I am Rukan Saif. Your team recently published an article of mine regarding my poetry and public speaking workshop at the Temple City Library. I wanted to express my heartiest thanks for publishing it. I really appreciated knowing you took the time to even consider my article, and I am very humbled. Please let me know if you ever need an extra pair of hands (or eyes) in your Teen-Section. Thank you! Kind regards, Rukan S.
Merry Molly "Man saves love-starved street youngster and changes her life." That would be a “purrfect” headline for Molly. Molly was just a kitten herself when she was abandoned and left to fend for herself. She had at least one and maybe two litters of kittens before she was scooped up and brought to safety. This 18-month-old orange tabby girl is young, curious, and playful. She is happy and very friendly with perhaps a slight preference for men - since it was a man who rescued her. She is lovey-dovey but usually on her terms, and likes head and neck scratches. This deserving girl needs a forever home where she can really blossom. Call (626) 449-1717 to arrange a meet and greet after filling out the adoption application at lifelineforpets.org/catadoption-application.html. See more pictures

Deputy District Attorney David Nary said Tenas also was ordered to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life. On or between Aug. 1, 2016 and Jan. 31, 2017, the defendant inappropriately
touched the 9 and 10-year-old victims at Hart Street Elementary School, the prosecutor said. The case was investigated by the Los Angeles Police Department.

Maranatha Slides Past Polytechnic to Kick Off Season Now that the weather is cooling down in sunny California, the winter season sports are getting underway as the Maranatha boys’ soccer team opened its campaign with a narrow 1-0 win over cross-town rival Polytechnic on Nov. 17. It definitely appeared to be the first game of the season for these two Pasadena teams as they not only came out with a lot of energy but with a lot of rust as well. Despite the somewhat sporadic play, the Minutemen were able to find the back of the net early on. Forward Brenton Holstein took advantage of a defensive miscue from Polytechnic and fired a shot to give Maranatha the 1-0 lead. The remainder of the

game saw much back-andforth action from both sides but Holstein’s lone goal proved to be all the Minutemen needed to secure their first victory of the season. By the time this article is published, Maranatha will
have played against Woodcrest Christian on Tuesday night. Polytechnic, however, already defeated CantwellSacred Heart of Mary 4-0 on Monday and won’t play again until Nov. 28 when they take on Campbell Hall.

Monrovia Soccer on Different Tracks to Open 2018 Campaign The Monrovia boys’ and girls’ soccer teams are on opposite ends of the spectrum to open the season as the girls are off to a 2-0 start while the boys have stumbled out of the gate and are 0-2. The boys kicked off their season on Nov. 13 with a game against Duarte that didn’t exactly pan out the way the Wildcats would have liked. The defending Rio Hondo League champs struggled to keep pace with
a high-flying Falcons team that never surrendered the lead whiling cruising to a 3-1 win. In the following game two days later, the boys looked to bounce back from its first setback of the season but the Whittier Cardinals had other plans in mind. The Wildcats were kept on their back foot for a majority of the contest, eventually falling to Whittier 2-1. Despite the boys’ rocky start, the girls have found
some success early this season, taking games over Westridge on Nov. 12 and Hoover on Nov. 15. The Wildcats managed to edge out Westridge 2-1 at home and handily defeated Hoover 5-1, including four goals in the second half alone. These are encouraging signs for the girls’ team as they put together a forgettable performance last season, going 4-9-6 overall while finishing last place in league.
