he irony was not lost Tuesday night. During one of the most heated and contentious times in Arcadia’s history, the council chambers air-conditioning system malfunctioned causing residents to perspire just a little longer to see who the next mayor might be. City Manager Dominic Lazzaretto quipped that the broken air-conditioning, in
point of fact, was not on the agenda and assured the public that maintenance workers were on the roof attempting to cool off the already heated chambers early Tuesday evening. Despite the uncomfortable heat, Arcadia council members unanimously voted to select Sho Tay as Mayor of Arcadia after one of the most difficult and contentious elections in Arcadia’s history. The Los Angeles Arboretum is home to many locally historic treasures. Original buildings from centuries ago, resurrected Native American structures, and peacocks rumored to be descended from the original exotic pets of local land baron Elias “Lucky” Baldwin to name a few. However, one such treasure lies deep in the heart
of the arboretum and mostly under thick layers of mud and rock. This local treasure is known as Lake Baldwin. Millennia ago, Native inhabitants of the San Gabriel Valley lived in Arcadia, before it was known as Arcadia of course. According to the Arboretum, a village known as Aleupkigna, which translates into “the place of many waters,” existed on arboretum grounds. The inhabitants SEE LAKE BALDWIN PAGE 12

An Arcadia police officer observed a suspicious vehicle in a residential neighborhood and attempted to pull it over for a vehicle code violation on Monday, shortly after 10 p.m. The officer activated his forward facing red light in an attempt to pull the vehicle over and the vehicle sped away from the officer at

a high rate of speed. A short pursuit ensued and the suspect vehicle lost control and collided with a business at Rosemead Boulevard and Blanch Street, in the neighboring city of Pasadena.
