2018 Pasadena Unified Teacher of the Year Donna Shepard, a special education teacher at Focus Point Academy, has been named the 2018 Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) Teacher of the Year and is the district’s nominee for the annual 2018 Los Angeles County Teacher of the Year honors competition. Ms. Shepard was one of five Rotary Teachers of Excellence awardees honored earlier this month. “Honoring the exemplary educators in our district is one of the highlights of the year. Ms. Shepard’s remarkable dedication to the students she serves represents the excellence of our teachers,” said Superintendent Brian McDonald. “Her profound commitment to making a positive impact on students at Focus Point Academy is truly inspirational.” Ms. Shepard is a Special Education teacher at Focus Point Academy, the structured program that incorporates daily supportive counseling and specially designed academic instruction for students diagnosed with emotional disturbances and specific

learning disabilities. A native of Pasadena, she has been a teacher in PUSD for 25 years, with the last six working as a special education teacher. She has a bachelor’s degree in Human Services from University of Phoenix, a credential as an Education Specialist for both mild/moderate and moderate/severe disabilities with an Autism clearance, and a master’s degree in Special Education from Point Loma University. “I love teaching at Focus Point Academy,” says Ms. Shepard. “My goal is to get each student reading and writing at or above grade level. I’m inspired every day by their growth and academic progress.” As the district’s nominee, Ms. Shepard will represent PUSD in the annual Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) Teacher of the Year competition, the largest of its kind in the state that is also part of the oldest and most prestigious honors contest in the U.S. for public school teachers. If selected as L.A. County Teacher of the Year, Ms. Shepard will be in contention for state designation.

you hear those sirens and see those lights: - Don't panic. - Don't stop in the middle of the road. - Do slow down and pull to the right safely. - Do remain stopped until the emergency vehicle has passed.

Unpacking ‘Her Portmanteau’ at Pasadena’s Boston Court May s. ruiz MayChu@att.net

F

amilies, and the drama that’s inherent in each, is the topic of Mfoniso Udofia’s play ‘Her Portmanteau.’ It will have its West Coast premiere at Boston Court Performing Arts Center from May 24 through June 30, 2018. Directed by Gregg T. Daniel, who recently directed Lorraine Hansberry’s groundbreaking play ‘Raisin in the Sun’ at A Noise Within, ‘Her Portmanteau’ stars Joyce Guy who plays the role of Abasiama the family matriarch. Completing the cast are Omoze Idehenre as Adiaha and Dele Ogundiran as Iniabisi. A theatre graduate of Hampton University, Guy was a member of DC Black Repertory Company. She has performed at the Kennedy Center and Mark Taper Forum. Her film and television credits include ‘Moneyball,’ ‘The Santa Clause,’ and ‘Animal Kingdom,’ among others. This will be Guy’s debut performance at Boston Court

and she recalls how her involvement in the project came about. “This is the third time, in the last year and a half that I’ve worked with Gregg. I choreographed ‘Les Blancs’ at Rogue Machine and ‘Raisin in the Sun,’ both of which he directed. When I was at the performances of ‘Les Blancs,’ Jessica Kubzansky, Boston Court’s Co-Artistic Director, was in the audience. I’ve known her for a while; I took a class with her a long time ago and we became friends. After the play she said to me, ‘Joyce, I have this play that I want you to audition for.’ And then I got a call from the casting director.” Aside from the ‘baggage’ that ‘Her Portmanteau’ explores, it also literally refers to a suitcase. Guy reveals, “It’s the same luggage that Adiaha took with her when she left for Nigeria with her father three decades ago.” “It’s a great story, with a character who has several layers,” Guy says. “And as an actress it’s challenging, but it’s a wonderful one. What keeps surprising me is that for someone who’s very direct in her everyday interactions

with people, to the point of rude bluntness, she wasn’t forthcoming with important information about her family. She makes promises she can’t keep and it seems that she does it to make herself feel better. She’s a woman of many contradictions. “There is a universal theme to this play. It’s about family dynamics and dysfunction, things we all can relate to; there’s no perfect family. For me, the biggest takeaway would be that we all have regrets; we’ve all done something that weighs on us. But you can work past that as long as you’re forthcoming and honest with yourself. The thought may not go away but you can go forward from there,” concludes Guy. While Mfoniso Udofia’s ‘Her Portmanteau’ is semiautobiographical, this taut and poignant drama about relatives, legacy, and connections will resonate with all of us. Some of us will recognize our particular family’s dysfunction and see ourselves in one of the characters. Because as different as every one of us is, we all share a human-ness that is imperfect.

The Challenge of Escape Rooms Comes to Pasadena Jackie Gonzales jackiegonzales3392@gmail.com

A timer counts down as you fumble with a lock and you can only think that you must escape, and do it now. This is the thrill of the increasingly popular Escape Rooms. The concept is simple; you are locked in a room with only the knowledge that you have a set amount of time in which to escape. You must search the room for clues, codes and other puzzle elements, all the while keeping your wits about you as the anxiety of your limited time builds. This rising business is beginning to find its way into more and more cities, offering players unique experiences that challenge their intellect and composure. Upon first hearing of Escape Rooms, I knew immediately that I wanted to visit the closest one to me. Luckily,

I found The Bunker Experience in downtown Pasadena. Located in the heart of Pasadena, this escape room has taken full advantage of the old bank building it is located in. While participating, I managed to step back from the thrill of the game and appreciate the creativity with which the Bunker Team has incorporated their location into the design of their experience. Old safe doors and exposed piping contribute to the entire experience. From the very beginning, it is clear that this team has created something unique, and is whole heartedly committed to the execution of an all-around entertaining challenge. Any attempt of either of The Bunker Experience’s two rooms begins with the building of SEE NEXT PAGE

Arcadia High School Choir’s May Show Sandi Khine sandiwkhine@gmail.com

“Just like fire, burning out the way, if I can light up the world for just one day…” Arcadia High School’s (AHS) eminent choral groups concluded the successful 2018 season with a “fire” show at the Arcadia Performing Arts Center (PAC) last Friday, May 25 and Saturday, May 26. At AHS, the choir groups are split into two: the mixed choir group and the advanced choir group Chanteurs. Impressively, Chanteurs is the oldest show choir in Southern California. In the fall semester Chanteurs is a concert choir performing classical pieces while in the spring semester

it is a show choir that incorporates dance choreography with vocals under a particular theme. This year’s theme was ‘Fire,’ and Chanteurs proved with its accomplished season (5th at the Los Alamitos Xtravaganza and 6th at the Burbank Blast! competitions) that its shows were nothing less than fire. Fortunately, friends and family were able to see the show choir performances and several others showcased at the annual May Show, including pop music, senior solos, show sets, and Chanteurs cabaret. On Friday, audience members enjoyed a panoply of senior solos, as well as several show numbers performed during show choir

competition season. Among the featured were Mixed Chorus: Imagination Station and Chanteurs Senior Solos, and Chanteurs: Fire! Saturday's show featured smaller groups, including solos and duets by Chanteurs cabaret. AHS students proved their innumerable talents even further as they sang numbers in French and Chinese. As a conclusion to AHS Choir's hard work and dedication this year, May Show allowed friends and family to marvel at such a complete culmination of everyone's talents. Special thanks to the performers, Dr. Pu, The Arcadia Performing Arts Foundation, Arcadia Music Club, and friends and family for a wonderful show.

anticipation. Participants must wait outside for two actors to come retrieve them and begin their quest. Once the obligatory waivers are signed the game begins and the team of actors makes it a truly enjoyable time. The entire facility is themed and built around a storyline years in the future in which nuclear fallout has occurred. The first of two rooms task players with finding a map and escaping before their time limit in order to warn the primary group of

survivors of a coming threat. Without revealing any important details of the puzzles themselves, I can say that I felt a good balance of challenge and satisfaction as our group (made up of myself, four friends, and two others) managed to complete the room with little time to spare. has even precipitated intervention from the Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE). LACOE Chief Financial Officer Candi Clark first sent a letter to PUSD Board President Roy Boulghourjian on Jan. 19, urging the district to take immediate action to restore its required minimum reserves for economic uncertainties. The letter, which described the PUSD as being in “immediate risk of becoming insolvent,” projected operating deficits of $11.9 million for 2017-18, $21.2 million for 2018-19, and $23.9 million for 2019-20. Less than a month later, on Feb. 8, the PUSD board approved a fiscal stabilization plan that sought to make approximately $6.9 million worth of budget reductions for FY2017-18 and approximately $14.2 million for FY2018-19. Fast forward a few months later and the situation remains critical. Although Superintendent Brian McDonald wrote in a letter last week that $12 million worth of reductions for 2018-19 have allowed the district to replenish its

In a PasadenaNow opinion piece from April 24, PUSD Board Member Scott Phelps wrote that despite these multimillion-dollar reductions, more cuts will be needed. “During the next, 18-19, school year, for which over $12 million in reductions has already been made,” he said, “we will be trying to find $8 million in further reductions or more revenue so that we don’t have to layoff more staff.” Phelps also revealed that the district will have to submit another fiscal stabilization plan

in December and that the board will “also be exploring ways to generate more revenue using the district’s properties.” During last week’s meeting, the board began to explore this idea of generating revenue via district properties - two representatives from the law firm Atkinson, Andelson, Loya, Ruud & Romo gave a brief presentation outlining the exchange of real property process, in case the board chooses to proceed in that manner. Arroyo Pacific Academy’s Foundation Celebrates 20 Years in Arcadia Arroyo Pacific Academy’s Foundation celebrated its 20th Anniversary Gala in their new building at 325 N. Santa Anita Avenue in Arcadia. With over 200 guests in attendance, alumni, parents, and friends of the school came together in support of the new campus and the annual Gala. The school moved only two weeks prior to the event, but guests were all smiles as the event raised over $35,000 for scholarships for deserving students. The Mardi Gras Ball was an evening that celebrated the new school campus with an enthusiastic mood that was contagious. The jazz band played New Orleans themed music throughout the evening, the roving mime kept people entertained and the dinner was a New Orleans treat. There were raffle prizes, a silent auction, a live auction, and a Fund-A-Need that kept the loyal alums and friends bidding throughout the evening. The new buildings are now joined with the Clarke Center as one cohesive campus. There is an academic

Pasadena Unified Awarded Grant to Expand Social and Emotional Supports The Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) has been awarded a $1.76 million Learning Communities for School Success program grant from the California Department of Education to provide social and emotional supports that lead to student success in and out of school. The threeyear grant supports practices and activities that improve attendance and academic outcomes for the district’s most vulnerable students, including foster youth and those at risk of dropping out of school. PUSD’s Learning Communities for School Success program is designed to improve student outcomes by enhancing school climates, reducing truancy and chronic

absenteeism, and preventing and addressing disciplinary incidents. Funding from the state grant will be used to fill key positions that directly support the district’s most vulnerable students through foster and homeless youth services, attendance, mental health, mentoring, parent/guardian outreach and education, and school support. Positions include the addition of a foster youth liaison to support foster and homeless youth; parent/guardian education and outreach workers who will conduct home visits and work closely with chronically absent K-12 students and their families; a mentoring specialist to expand the Mentors for L.I.F.E. program; an atten-

dance coordinator who will work with schools to boost attendance; mental health workers to provide therapeutic mental health counseling for at-risk students; and a coach who will support schools in building positive climates. The Pasadena Unified School District's School Support Services Division and Child Welfare, Attendance, and Safety Department promote student success through programs and services that strategically address academic, social, emotional, or physical barriers to learning and achievement. Blood Drive Slated June 2 for Monrovia High Student Battling Leukemia More than 220 students, teachers, and community members have stepped up to donate blood during a drive benefitting Monrovia High School studentathlete James Speranta, who is facing an unexpected battle against leukemia. The numbers double the typical signups received by the American Red Cross, triggered by news of Speranta’s sudden diagnosis in mid-March. Speranta is a member of Monrovia High’s swim and water polo teams, and San Gabriel Men’s Water Polo Club, and regularly trains at the local Fitness Factor gym. All of his sports and physical activities came to a halt on March 16 when he was diagnosed with

leukemia. Nicola Speranta noticed her son was looking pale after strenuous activity in early March. She took him to the local doctor on March 13. After checking his vitals and blood levels, his hemoglobin level was about a third of what would be normal, signs his body was struggling to transport oxygen in his blood. James Speranta was given three bags of blood to stabilize his condition and lower his heart rate. A bone marrow sample on March 19 revealed he was facing childhood leukemia. Speranta underwent intensive 28-day chemotherapy treatments at Miller Children’s Hospital,

where he stayed in the hematology/oncology ward so doctors could monitor his progress in a sterile environment. Monrovia High students, teachers, and staff recorded encouraging messages, which they sent to James to view and listen to while he was hospitalized. Another blood drive will be held in support of James on June 2 at Clifton Middle School from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., hosted by Monrovia Unified, the James Speranta Foundation, and Red Cross. 5 Easy Fixes to Prep Your Body for Beach Season

FITNESS With Summer just around the corner, how do you plan on stepping up your workout routine Yajen TAN yajen@gimmefit.com

B

y now, you’re probably starting to regret having signed up for that gym membership that you haven’t touched since February. But with beach season just around the corner, you’re probably starting to wonder just how much progress you can make with such little time left. Fear not, despite not having months and months of time to prepare, you’ve still got a fair shot to get your body moving in the right direction, and start developing behaviors that will give you that summer confidence all year round. Preparing your body for training Before you dive headfirst into the best workout or diet program that crosses your eye, take a few days to sit down and figure out what supplemental behaviors can

ummer is coming and the great white north is calling. In fact, if you listen closely you can almost hear roaring grizzly bears, splashing killer whales, rustling moose, and squawking bald eagles – all doing their best to attract tourists to share in the splendor of Alaska. So for those who have never taken a trip to the area, now is a great time to look for last-minute cruise specials. One of the most popular lines sailing around the “last frontier” is Holland

help increase your chance of success. The majority of the people, who eventually hit all of their fitness and nutrition goals, share a couple common traits. These people are very mindful about how their bodies operate, and make sure to take care of those needs first, before running into the gym. this summer. -Pump up your water intake Water is a simple, yet often overlooked, element in a healthy lifestyle. Many of our bodies’ internal processes rely greatly on us staying hydrated. To really point out just how important that is, a mere 2% decrease in overall water weight can cause significant changes in blood flow and blood volume, which

then can cause loss of focus, low energy, and decreased physical performance. To keep yourself more hydrated throughout the day, make sure you keep water readily available. This might mean carrying a water bottle with you throughout the day, or leaving a large cup at your desk during work. Personally, I enjoy using a cup much more, because I don’t have to remove a cap every time I want to take a drink. -Start crafting your green smoothie The benefits of incorporating a green smoothie, in your daily routine, are truly amazing. For starters, it’s a super easy way to help you meet your daily nutrient needs. You can compress a whole lot of vitamins, minerals, and fiber into just a couple ounces of liquid. On top of that, it also acts as a great way to help you meet your hydration needs early on in the day. -Figure out how stressed

you are There aren’t many people who account for stress in their fitness and nutrition behaviors. The reality is that we’re more stressed today than ever before and that can seriously impact the quality of your workouts and overall physical well-being. Interestingly enough, exercise is amazing for close to all groups of individuals, but when it comes to people who face highly stressful lifestyles, it can actually worsen the amount of stress that they face. -Workouts/activity

Once you’ve taken the time to prepare your body for a physical transformation, exercise will play a huge role in your results. I recommend that you take a few weeks to really work on creating a habit of exercise that you can stick to. This might be as simple as doing 50 jumping jacks Read More at, ArcadiaWeekly.com, MonroviaWeekly.com, PasadenaIndependent.com

The Social Media Tattoo Angela COPELAND, angela@copelandcoaching.com

H

ave you ever considered getting a tattoo? Or, had a child ask you about getting one? If you have, you know it can be a tough decision. Getting a tattoo is very personal. Tattoos are permanent. They have a personal meaning that often ties back to your beliefs or your experiences. If you decide to get a tattoo you’ll consider where the tattoo will be located. You’ll decide if you want people to see it all the time, or just some of the time, depending on which clothing will cover it. You probably wonder where I’m going with this line of thought. I was recently asked about social media during a radio interview. How should we use it? What should we post online, and what should we keep to ourselves? Given everything going on in the world today, what we share on social media is such a difficult and personal

question. There’s no one size fits all answer. On one hand, with all the important political issues that are in the news you may feel compelled to speak out and be heard. On the other, you may be hesitant to make waves. Whatever you decide to share, one thing is for sure; what you post on the internet is permanent. It’s like you’re writing in permanent marker each and every time you share. Sometimes the things we write don’t seem permanent. Our online presence appears to be in our control. We can delete anything we add to the internet, after all. But, don’t be fooled. There are a number of ways that everything you write online is permanent. There’s a website called the “Wayback Machine” that archives web content. It doesn’t have a copy of every site and every piece of content, but you would be surprised how much is there. Visit www. archieve.org and look up your favorite website. You’ll find that you can look at copies of the site from years ago. It’s pretty incredible. Then, there are printouts

and screen shots, and all the other ways that your posts and tweets can be memorialized without your consent. Does this mean that you should stop tweeting? No, it doesn’t. But, it means that you want to consciously think about what you want to be known for. You want to be aware of your “online brand.” This is especially true if you’re looking for a new job. Employers will no longer accept your resume at face value. They’ll go to Google and search for your name. They will look at all of the content that pops up, whether it’s text or photos. And, sadly, they will judge you. That’s a part of the modern day life we’re living. Again, there’s no right answer to this question. What you choose to share is up to you but, remember the content you share online is an internet tattoo that will follow you long after you outgrow it. Proof That Self-Image Isn’t Always a Truthful Reflection changing anything. Why would anyone refuse to see a change in themselves as drastic as plastic surgery? To quote Dr. Maltz in his book The New Psycho-Cybernetics, “To really live, that is to find life reasonably satisfying, you must have an adequate and realistic self-image that you can live with. You must find yourself acceptable to you…” And that’s why I believe a detox should start with fixing your mental view of yourself. If you don’t have a healthy self-view, if your self-image is out of alignment with what you are trying to accomplish, you

will never see success. We all are much harder on our flaws then we need to be. That’s why I felt compelled to include a chapter in my new book on explaining how to do a mental detox. It’s where everything we are begins, and we must detox ourselves from the negative thoughts and harsh lies we tell ourselves every day if we want to have any success at detoxing our body. Dating Rules to Break When to throw all the rules out the window hedda muskat Author of The Dating Mystique heddamuskat@gmail.com

re Dating Rules ruining your social life? Are you so overwhelmed by what you should or shouldn’t do that dating has become an emotional burden that you just want to give up on? Well, you’re not alone and this is perfectly normal. With the thousands of dating books out there and the ginormous mountains of articles on every dating site about lists of “do’s and don’ts” regarding every breath you take, it’s time to say enough is enough. I’m not going to let dating rules and protocols dictate my life anymore. I’m going to just go out, let it rip, break all the rules and just have a great time.

Here are some rules that you may want to consider breaking if you truly feel the chemistry and the compatibility are mutual. The “Playing Hard to Get Rule.” This is the rule that tells you to not be so available and to not to show interest. This is a rule to break if you really like that person and you sincerely do not have other plans. Being upfront about how you feel is a good start. The “Hold Back Your Deal Breaker Rules.” If there are definite deal breakers for you, such as kids, marriage, smoking, or drug use, then be upfront as soon as possible even at the risk of turning the other person off.

Reader says NFL’s ‘Anthem Policy’ is Pure Hypocrisy Dear Editor: The NFL’s new “anthem policy” requires players to “respect” the flag and the national anthem or stay in the locker room until it is played. The NFL refers to this as a compromise — it was anything but. This was a mandate, not a decision arrived at through a

collaborative process. Despite claiming that they would consult with the players before making a decision on this issue, the National Football League Players Association said, “The NFL chose to not consult the union in the development of this new ‘policy.’” So the league and owners will decide what shows “respect.” Kneeling is out. The Pittsburgh Steelers indicated that raising a fist or linking arms is out. If one team decides a

gesture or posture is respectful but another team doesn’t like it, what will happen? One of the NFL officials actually said, “We will know it when we see it.” - Jeffery Robinson, ACLU Deputy Legal Director and Director of the Trone Center for Justice and Equality Read More at, ArcadiaWeekly.com, MonroviaWeekly.com, PasadenaIndependent.com

hysical fitness isn’t just about what your muscles and bones can sustain. It’s mental game, and one that owner Vanessa Sandoval at Ready Sweat Go Pilates studio is helping others master. “What I loved about Pilates was how it made me feel,” said Sandoval, who was introduced to the practice by a chance Groupon session with a friend. “After each session, I felt stronger, leaner, more energized and less stressed. Once I committed to a program and actually began the certification process, I knew almost immediately that I was going to open my own studio.” Similar to yoga but more centered on core strength and body control versus flexibility, Pilates was created in the 1920’s by Joseph Pilates to aid post-injury rehabilitation. The

It’s Time to Ready, Sweat, Go practice has enjoyed renewed popularity in the last several years, with Ready Sweat Go opening just last year in 2017. To stand her studio apart, Sandoval’s instruction draws heavily from Pilates’ origins to maximize results for her clients. “What sets us apart is that we’re form-focused, meaning that we take the time to explain the Pilates method and principles to our clients,” she said. “I introduce the correct names for the muscles and to explain which muscles should be working in any given exercise. I want our clients to be as informed as possible so that they can reap the full benefits of the Pilates method.” Ready Sweat Go is also unique in its pared-down classes, with no more than five individuals participating at a time. Private and semiprivate (two individuals) classes are also available, with all options allowing Sandoval

to note their progress and make modifications specific to their bodies—something she especially loves. “The great thing about the Pilates method is how adaptable it is. There’s a variation for every exercise, and a skilled instructor will know how to tweak an exercise to make it more or less challenging,” she said. Helping clients overcome misconceptions about the method is also a priority. Ready Sweat Go is located at 945 W. Foothill Blvd. in Monrovia. off Northview ace Alfredo Frey to pull Monrovia within two runs. Barnier’s homer lit a huge fire within the Wildcats as they poured it on in the seventh inning with five more runs to cap off the craziest of comebacks. Interestingly enough, the semifinal game against Hemet on Tuesday played out in similar fashion. After the Bulldogs gave the Monrovia a taste of their own medicine with a grand slam to go up 6-3, the Wildcats stormed back and scored eight runs in the fifth inning. Steven Bermudez

arguably had his best game of the season, going 4-4 at the plate to bring in 4 RBIs. Gabe Arellano and Sennet Schultz hit a combined 3-7 and brought in two RBIs apiece. For both games, aces Julian Gomeztrejo and Josh Delgado did most of the heavy lifting. The senior duo tossed 11.1 innings while giving up 10 earned runs and picking up eights strikeouts. Despite the two huge wins, the Wildcats will quickly need to refocus and take their seven remaining lives into the championship battle against La Quinta (21-10) on Saturday.

here’s an ancient proverb that claims all cats have nine lives. And as crazy as that might seem, the events that unfolded during Monrovia’s CIF-SS quarterfinal and semifinal match-ups evidently built up a strong case. In the quarterfinal against Northview last Friday, the Wildcats found themselves in a 6-0 hole but rose from the grave to complete the unlikeliest of comebacks in a thrilling 9-6 victory. Monrovia ‘s listless disposition through most of the game against Northview was quite strange considering it had accrued some good momentum from its 11-0 routing of Sierra Vista in the second round. However, the tables had completely turned in the later frames when coach Brad Blackmore and the Rio Hondo League champs decided to shift into maximum overdrive. After the Wildcats loaded the bases in the top of the sixth, Logan Barnier stepped up to crush a two-out grand slam

Pasadena’s Muir Has Magical Playoff Run Nixed by El Rancho Going into this year’s postseason, expectations were low for a Muir baseball team that hadn’t made the playoffs in over 30 years. However, the Mustangs went on a six-game winning streak late in the season that helped them finish third in the Pacific League standings and earn a spot in the CIF-SS Division 5 playoffs. This momentum transferred over to postseason

play as Muir defeated Twentynine Palms 5-2 in the opening round and Rancho Christian 6-0 in the second round. Unfortunately for the Mustangs, they were finally brought down to earth by a seasoned El Rancho squad in the quarterfinals. The Dons managed to jump out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back from there. Muir’s bats were no match for El Rancho

ace Damien Ureta, who pitched a complete game while only surrendering two hits to go along with four strikeouts. First baseman Ely Resendiz was the only Mustang to record a hit as Ureta retired Muir’s final nine batters en route to a 3-0 victory. Despite the playoff exit, the Mustangs can hang their hats on one of its better seasons in recent memory.

Arcadia’s Bitter End to Historic Season Tried as it might, but the Arcadia baseball team was unable to stop Long Beach Wilson’s last rally in the second round of the Division III CIF-SS playoffs; effectively ending the Apaches’ recordbreaking season. Following a brilliant regular-season run that saw them string together a program record 23 wins, the Apaches were thwarted in their second game of the postseason. Despite being highly ranked in several national polls throughout the season, Arcadia seemed to run out of gas in this extra-inning loss to the Bruins. After a scoreless stalemate through the first four innings, Arcadia started to pick up a head of steam when Dominick Tello hit a chopper to left field to bring in Jeffery Castillo for the 1-0 lead. The Apaches then went on to open a 4-0

lead in the sixth after Tim Van Kirk smacked a bases-clearing shot to the left-field gap. However, the Bruins responded in a big way in the bottom half of the frame, leveling the score thanks to some timely hits by Nolen Ornelas, Ryan Guerrero and Cristian Tavares. This sent

the game into extra innings, which was where it all came undone for Arcadia. In the bottom of the eighth with runners on second and third, the Bruins took full advantage of a wild pitch that allowed Kyle Clothier to come home for the walk-off 5-4 victory.
