REEL STORIES PROGRAM EMPOWERS YOUNG WOMEN VIA FILM IN GLENDALE
R
eel Stories will conduct their Los Angeles filmmaking program with workshops led by experts in the film and media industry from July 30 to August 10. For two weeks, young female filmmakers, ages 12-18, will learn the skills and techniques necessary to create a film, from screenwriting to filming to editing. The camp will take place Monday through Friday at Glendale Community College, 1500 North Verdugo Rd. in Glendale, CA. At Reel Stories, young women discover their voice and express their point of view in a powerful and thoughtful way via film. During the program, the campers will work in groups and learn to create their own film from start to finish with guidance from professionals, including Oscar nominees and winners. Participants will hone their skills in lighting, cinematography, sound, editing, and motion
graphics, while learning media literacy, leadership skills, and team building in the process. After two weeks, the aspiring female filmmakers will debut their work at a film festival open to the public. Reel Stories Reel Stories believes that when women and girls are better represented behind the scenes in the media, they will be better reflected on the screen. Only 17% of decision-makers in the film and television industry are women. Reel Stories empowers young women to value and nurture their own unique voice, create their own media, view current media critically and thoughtfully, and aspire to leadership in all aspects of their lives. “I love Camp Reel Stories because it introduced me to a world of film and powerful women, two things that I now want to be a part of for the rest of my life.” Yasaman, Reel Stories Alumni and Staff Member.
