The Foothill Gold Line light rail project from Glendora to Montclair was awarded nearly $300 million from the California State Transportation Agency’s (CalSTA) Transit and Intercity Rail Capital Program (TIRCP) for transformative transit and rail projects. The project was one of sev-

eral major rail investment projects that Los Angeles County Metro submitted for TIRCP grants, with a combined county award of $1.09 billion. TIRCP is part of SB1, with proceeds coming directly from Cap and Trade auctions. The Foothill Gold Line’s TIRCP grant award

The Interagency Council on Homelessness released the 2018 Point-inTime Count for the County of San Bernardino (link to release). A total of 646 homeless individuals were recorded in the City of San

Bernardino, with 313 in sheltered housing and 333 unsheltered. “Combating the growing number of homeless people in the City of San

will be used to fill the estimated funding gap for the $1.5 billion, six-station light rail extension, that will connect Los Angeles and San Bernardino Counties. The gap is based on the Foothill Gold Line Construction Authority’s latest project estimates; the final project cost will be known later this

year, once bids are received. “Today’s grant award is excellent news for the San Gabriel Valley and our region,” stated Construction Authority CEO, Habib F. Balian, after learning of today’s announcement by CalSTA. “It highlights how the county can successfully leverage our voter-approved

Is Citrus Greening Disease Becoming A Issue In Riverside?

The City of Riverside, which traces much of its early prosperity to the birth and expansion of the citrus industry, is moving to protect the historic Parent Navel Orange Tree that played a major role in that growth more than a century ago. The Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department and researchers from the University of California, Riverside (UCR) will drape a protective cloth over the tree (4/25) to protect it from the threat of citrus greening disease, also known as huanglongbing (HLB). The disease, which has been found in Riverside, kills citrus trees

and threatens the citrus industry across the state. “The Parent Navel is an iconic symbol of Riverside, as it represents the impact the citrus industry had on our economy,” Mayor Rusty Bailey said. “Riversiders hold this symbol of our citrus heritage very dear, so it is encouraging to see our parks personnel taking a proactive approach.” Since the first discovery of citrus greening disease in Riverside last year, the City has worked with county and state agricultural agencies to urge all owners of citrus trees in the area to remain vigilant SEE PAGE 4

tax measures to bring new funds to Los Angeles, allowing us to complete more projects faster - including the Foothill Gold Line.” The Foothill Gold Line Construction Authority is well underway to hire the design-build contractor for the Glendora to Montclair project. In February, four

highly-qualified designbuild teams were shortlisted to compete for the work, and each was sent an Industry Review Draft Request for Proposals shortly thereafter. The RFP is on schedule to be issued late next month, and a contract award is anticipated in October.

Long Beach Airport (LGB) will see changes in JetBlue’s flight schedule and will include two, new seasonal destinations. These changes will take effect in fall and winter 2018. JetBlue’s revised schedule at LGB includes reduction in frequencies to select markets in the Bay Area, an additional daytime flight to Boston, starting September 5, and seasonal service to Bozeman, Montana and Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Both of these markets will be served twice weekly beginning December 2018. The changes involving frequency reductions are expected to occur in fall 2018, and no existing destinations are planned for reduction. “We are grateful for our

long partnership with JetBlue at Long Beach Airport,” said Mayor Robert Garcia. “Despite their changes in service, the future looks great for the airport. We have strong interest to fill those slots from multiple carriers.” JetBlue’s decision was not entirely a surprise to the City. A number of the markets served have presented a challenge to achieve or maintain profitability under present service models, and airlines are continually adjusting when needed to be as profitable as possible. LGB has received a lot of interest in additional flight slots from other carriers and already has an es-
