Long Beach Airport Hosts a Full-Scale Training Exercise Long Beach Airport (LGB) held a full-scale emergency response exercise on Friday, April 20, 2018. The drill tested the speed and effectiveness of emergency personnel and LGB staff in the event of an aircraft accident. Industry experts served as evaluators along with oversight from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The emergency preparedness exercise, known as the Triennial, is required by the FAA. Commercial airports, such as LGB, must hold such an event every three years to maintain their Part 139 Airport Certification which allows commercial flights to operate out of the airport. “This exercise enhances LGB’s working relationship
with multiple local agencies and tests their readiness to deploy personnel and resources,” said Mayor Robert Garcia. “I would like to commend all agencies that took part in this drill. They helped provide an invaluable opportunity to practice coordinating medical and emergency performance.” Multiple emergency agencies from around the City and region assisted and evaluated the exercise. Response was conducted by the Long Beach Fire Department, Long Beach Police Department, and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Medical support was provided by the American Red Cross, Dignity Health St. Mary’s Medical Center,
Lake Elsinore Police Department Traffic Unit conducted a DUI Saturation Patrol on April 20, 2018, throughout the city between the hours of 4:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. High Visibility Enforcement efforts like this have a deterrent effect, lowering the incidents of impaired driving. In recent years, California has seen a disturbing increase in drug-impaired driving crashes. Lake Elsinore PD supports the new effort from the Office of Traffic Safety that aims to educate all drivers that “DUI Doesn’t Just Mean Booze.” If you take prescription drugs,
particularly those with a driving or operating machinery warning on the label, you might be impaired enough to get a DUI. Marijuana can also be impairing, especially in combination with alcohol or other drugs, and can result in a DUI. Studies of California drivers have shown that 30 percent of drivers in fatal crashes had one or more drugs in their systems. A study of active drivers showed more tested positive for drugs that may impair driving (14 percent) than did for alcohol (7.3

El Monte Aims to Reduce Drowning Statistics, Launches Free Swimming Program In the United States, drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury death for children ages one through fourteen. The City of El Monte is helping reduce this staggering statistic by committing to teach water safety to secondgraders in the El Monte City School District. The City and School District collaborated to launch the El Monte Swims pilot program for participating schools including New Lexington Elementary, Cortada Elementary, Wilkerson Elementary, Columbia Elementary and Potrero Elementary. The free water instruction classes
are structured to mirror the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim lesson plan. “Learning to swim is not just a hobby—it is a key, lifelong skill that can save lives,” said El Monte Mayor Andre Quintero. “The El Monte Swims program is empowering children to feel confident and safe in the water.” Monique Lopez, parent of a participating child, says she sees the confidence her daughter has built through the program. “Water safety is important.
