tephon Clark, a 23-year-old father of two, was murdered in the backyard of his grandmother’s house by two Sacramento police officers who fired 20 bullets at him, hitting him eight times, mostly in the back. The officers claimed he was holding a gun; he was, in fact, holding a
cell phone. The news, like all the other alleged police killings of young black men, added the proverbial salt to the deep wounds this nation is reeling from with the advent of so many police shootings in recent years of African American males. In Pasadena alone, police officers shot and killed Leroy Barnes in 2009, Kendrec McDade in 2012, JR Thomas in 2016 and Matthew Hurtado in 2017, and SEE GROUPS RALLYING PAGE 10

April is Distracted Driver Awareness Month Pasadena Police deploying extra traffic officers Drivers are using their cell phones less often while driving, 10 years after “hands-free” became the law, but distracted driving remains a serious safety challenge in California. Observing April as Distracted Driving Awareness Month and the first week in April as California Teen Safe Driving Week, safety advocates will focus on education and enforcement efforts statewide. Pasadena Police Department will join law enforcement throughout the state to step up enforcement along with awareness efforts by the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) to discourage distracted driving. Officers will have a special emphasis this month on enforcing all cell phone and distracted driving laws. The goal is to increase voluntary compliance by drivers, but sometimes citations are
necessary for motorists to better understand the importance of driving distraction Traffic officers have issued hundreds of thousands of citations over the past three years to those texting or calling on a handheld cell phone. Recent legislation now makes it illegal to use your smartphone’s apps will driving. Still, everyone has seen other drivers on a device driving in a dangerous manner next to them during a commute or a trip around town. “Smart phones are part of everyone’s lives now. Texting, phone calls and posting on social media are nearly addicting,” said Interim Chief John Perez, Pasadena PD. “But doing these things can have deadly consequences while driving on our city’s street. Changing these dangerous habits will help make our roadways safer for everyone.”
Pasadena PD has the following Safety Tips: • If you receive a text message or need to send one, pull over and park your car in a safe location, but ‘never’ on a freeway. Once you are safely off the road, it is safe to text. • Designate your passenger as your “designated texter.” Allow them access to your phone to respond to calls or messages. • Do not engage in social media scrolling or messaging while driving. • Cell phone use can be habit-forming. Struggling to not text and drive? Put the cell phone in the trunk or back seat of your vehicle until you arrive at your final destination. Pasadena Police will be deploying extra traffic officers with grant-funded resources on: Friday, April 13, Friday, April 20 and Friday, April 27

ChapCare – As of Today Amelia lucero alucero@beaconmedianews.com
ChapCare began its journey 20 years ago with its first clinic in the Northwest part of Pasadena. Since then, the community clinic has established a total of eight locations within the San Gabriel Valley, including in the cities Pasadena, Monrovia, El Monte, and South El Monte. Its services, which was originally just health care, has also expanded to dental, vision, women’s health, behavior health, pediatric and family services, enrollment assistance, and outreach services. ChapCare’s advancements prove its ability to achieve success in its mission statement, “to provide excellent, comprehensive and innovative health care that is accessible to all the residents of the San Gabriel Valley.” Not only has the clinic been able to achieve its goal of providing a wide variety of health care services throughout the San Gabirel Valley, but it has also been able to accomplish partnerships that truly give patients an easier way to take care of their health. For instance, its partnership with the nationally renowned rideshare mobile app Lyft helps provide discounted rides to first-time users. As a Covered California Navigator Grantee, ChapCare provides health insurance enrollment assistance at its El Monte Enrollment Shop.
In additional efforts to meet the needs of the community ChapCare has partnered with organizations such as CalFresh, WIC and California Lifeline. Aside from assisting in transportation and health care enrollment, ChapCare has made it a point to help their patients obtain the necessary pharmaceuticals by placing pharmacies or dispensaries on-site. Medical deliveries are also offered. It goes without saying that ChapCare has gained the support and respect of the cities it serves, as the clinic has multiple municipal partnerships within every city where a clinic is located. ChapCare CEO Margaret B. Martinez, MPH said the clinic’s proudest achievement has been “to make a change in the picture of health disparity in the communities we serve.” ChapCare will be taking a look back at its history, who they are today, and what its future holds at its 20 year anniversary being held on April 21, 2018 at its Lincoln location. The keynotes speakers include Assemblymember Chris Holden and Dr. Nathan Lewis, M.D., a ChapCare Founding Board Member. NBC 4 Investigative Reporter, Lolita Lopez, will serve as Master of Ceremony for the event. The organization hopes that everyone who has participated in ChapCare’s growth will join the event.

SELECTED ARTISTS ANNOUNCED FOR SECOND ANNUAL BOLDPAS: AN ART TAKEOVER OF OLD PASADENA Old Pasadena Management District (OPMD) announces the second annual BoldPas: An Art Takeover of Old Pasadena, scheduled for May 12, 12:00 to 8:00PM. BoldPas is a vibrant, free one-day art event that showcases 13 selected, sitespecific, temporary art installations throughout historic Old Pasadena alleyways. The creative atmosphere is magnified when more than two dozen Old Pasadena businesses serve as Merchant Art Stops. BoldPas highlights Old Pasadena’s unique urban and historic spaces and encourages visitors to experience the
space, architecture, and character of the 22-block historic district. OPMD is thrilled to announce that after the review of numerous creative and intriguing proposals, artist selections have been made. Awarded artists are all based in the greater Los Angeles area. Event organizers made a concerted effort to support both established artists and those that are up-andcoming. Selected installations feature a “bold” theme, displaying bright colors, surprising scale, and playfulness. Artists will incorporate common, everyday found
and lightweight materials to emphasize the temporary nature of the artworks. Many are interactive, encouraging hands-on engagement with viewers. The installations will be in place only for one day, creating an ephemeral nature and not-to-miss excitement. Visitors are invited to spend the day in Old Pasadena, meandering the historic alleyways and side streets – experience Old Pasadena with new eyes. More details will be announced as the event date draws nearer. Visit www. oldpasadena.org/boldpas for complete details

Sierra Madre Playhouse Presents ‘Miss Lulu Bett’ As the next entry in its Off The Page series of free monthly play readings, Sierra Madre Playhouse will present the comedy Miss Lulu Bett, the first play written by a woman to win the Pulitzer Prize, in 1921. In this rarely seen play, Miss Lulu Bett is a
spinster of thirty-three who does all the work for her sister’s demanding family. When her brotherin-law’s brother arrives for a visit, the two are accidentally married in a ceremony that is intended as a joke but turns out to be valid. At once sentimental
and sharply satirical, this drawing-room comedy about the uncertain emancipation of lonely Miss Lulu makes for a very funny evening, without scanting the feminist underpinning. “Where has Miss Lulu Bett been all our lives?” – The Washington Post
Playwright Zona Gale (1874-1938) based Miss Lulu Bett on her novella. Her other plays include Uncle Jimmy; The Clouds; Evening Clothes; Faint Perfume; Mr. Pitt; and The Neighbours. Elina De Santos directs the staged reading. One of
the city’s most-honored directors, she is Co-Artistic Director of Rogue Machine Theatre and a Resident Director at Pacific Resident Theatre. She received an L.A. Drama Critics Circle Award for her direction of Orpheus Descending. Monday, April 30 at
7:00 p.m. At Sierra Madre Playhouse, 87 W. Sierra Madre Blvd., Sierra Madre, CA 91024. Admission: Free. Donations are accepted. There is ample free parking in a lot behind the Playhouse. Information: www. sierramadreplayhouse.org or (626) 355-4318.

brutally beat Chris Ballew in 2017. “These events are part of a broader concatenation of killings of innocent civilians, disproportionately people of color, by law enforcement across the country,” a media advisory issued by Ian Jameson and Melissa Michelson stated Monday. On Saturday, April 14, at 10 a.m., Pasadenans and
Altadenans Against Police Violence, Refuse Fascism, the Altadena ACLU and other activist groups will hold a rally in front of the Mobil Station on the corner of Fair Oaks Avenue and Woodbury Road in Altadena, where Chris Ballew was beaten by Pasadena Police last year. The groups plan on honoring the memory of Stephon Clark, the memories of Leroy Barnes, Kendrec
McDade, JR Thomas, and Matthew Hurtado, as well as honor Chris Ballew who survived his brutal beating. The groups plan to march down Fair Oaks Avenue, turn left on Washington, and circuit back to the Mobil station holding signs ‘emblazoned with the images of these men and shouting chants objurgating police violence and murder, reminiscent of protests in recent weeks in Sacramento.’
I get comments from time to time that suggest I somehow do not have the right to write my blog. These criticisms are often personal. I think that is because some don't actually understand the issues we discuss here. I received the following from someone named Amy, and here is how our moment went. Amy: I'm so glad that you've moved out of our wonderful little city. Since you've moved out, why do you think you can contribute to this conversation. Tattler: Because I completely enjoy doing it, Amy. I lived in Sierra Madre for 15 years and still have a lot of friends here. As I do in Arcadia, Pasadena and the other SGV towns this blog covers. When I moved out a lot of people asked me if I would keep writing, and I said that I would. Besides, 3 to 4 thousand people a day read The Tattler. So now I am supposed to stop writing because you don't like what I have to say? It seems
obvious to me that you are far more concerned with silencing people you don't agree with. This next one appeared on a Facebook page. Apparently Scarlett, who lives in Pasadena, thinks I own that page. I do not. I suspect Scarlett's problem with The Tattler stems from the fact that her husband is a retired government employee, and receives a generous yearly CalPERS haul. Yes, it is always about the money. Scarlett's message also has a whiff of madness to it. Particularly her stated support for the right to a free exchange of ideas, but only so long as everyone understands that not agreeing with her is evil incarnate. Scarlet: I hardly ever voice my opinion politically, but I feel that I have to finally speak up. This is one the ugliest most hateful sites I have ever seen!! This site brings out the worst and ugliest in America. I had the most horribly enlightening opportunity to listen to one
of these hate mongers attack everyone at the last council meeting. Please everyone!! Go by what you know and love in your heart. Not by people that are trying to destroy all that we value in our wonderful town and lives!! After this speaker who went way over the allotted 3 minute non-agenda items (she'd probably still be talking!), my daughter gave a wonderful speech that got a standing ovation and clapping. Even if we disagree on many issues, that is our right and gift as Americans. But we need to continue to respect our differences without hate and war mongering and work together for our common good!! Mod: Like I said, the agitated Miss Scarlett's Facebook page identifies her as being a Pasadena resident. Which pretty much explains her belief that voicing opposition to unnecessarily increasing city tax revenues is tantamount to "hateful war mongering."

Operating Company (RBOC), “although, financially, it is a difficult event to pull off.” As the “only event of the year where the RBOC is the promoter,” according to staff’s report, Americafest involves the RBOC assuming “all financial risk associated with the event,” which is anticipated to have a total cost of approximately $850,000 this year. The “goal of Americafest is to break even financially,” continues the report, “however based on anticipated expenses and revenue [the RBOC is] budgeting a loss of approximately $70,000.” Dunn also revealed that “unfortunately, last year wasn’t a successful financial event,” so, this year, the city will up their contribution towards the expenses from $60,000 to $80,000 – a price tag that will primarily cover traffic and neighborhood management costs. The fact that this year’s Fourth of July holiday falls on a Wednesday played a role in the projected revenues (or lack thereof), but Dunn also reminded council that, as a family event, Americafest is traditionally not as lucrative

as other Rose Bowl events prices are kept relatively low and certain-aged children get in for free. Additional neighborhood security/ management is also required as the fireworks show attracts numerous people who do not necessarily enter the festival, but instead watch from vantage points like those along Parkview Avenue. “Expenses are a little higher with the holiday, but revenue is not high enough to offset it,” revealed Dunn. Despite the costs, the RBOC still sees Americafest as an essential component to Pasadena’s cultural fabric and argues that it does
indeed contribute to the city’s economy in one way or another, “although this event may not generate significant revenue, overall it has been positive financially for the RBOC over the past several years. It is staff’s understanding that the July 4th celebration at the Rose Bowl does bring in people throughout the area, so it has some economic impact on our local businesses.”

Bernal, Central District of California. Bingham pleaded guilty on Jan. 8, 2018 on a felon in possession charge. “This is an example of ATF working together with its local law enforcement partners by sharing intelligence and ballistic tools from our Crime Gun Intelligence Center to identify and target those trigger pullers in our community,” said Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Los Angeles Field Division’s Special Agent in Charge Bill McMullan. “We will continue to focus our efforts on these violent criminal organizations to hold them accountable for their actions.” In 2016, due to escalating crime gun violence in the City of San Bernardino, the SBPD partnered with ATF to begin targeting violent criminals responsible for shootings. Early in the investigation, Walter Nichols, 24, of San Bernardino, and his brother Joseph Denham, 27, of San Bernardino, both PDL gang members, sold three rifles during two controlled purchases. In early November 2016,
Pasadena Police Department (PPD) detectives informed ATF that Nichols, Denham, and Jahaad Crawford, 26, of Pasadena, along with one other PDL gangster were believed to be involved in a shootout in a downtown Pasadena restaurant parking lot following a high school football game. During the incident Nichols, Denham, Crawford, and the other gangster, all either shot or attempted to shoot, later fleeing in a getaway car driven by a PDL associate. Later that November, ATF arrested Nichols in San Bernardino. In the same day, Denham, Crawford, Bingham and two others were involved in a vehicle pursuit and felony stop by SBPD. During the pursuit, Bingham and Crawford each tossed firearms that were recovered by pursuing ATF agents, with SBPD officers finding ammunition in the vehicle. Bullet casings from a test fire of the firearm tossed by Bingham were entered into the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN). The firearm casings matched the pistol used by Nichols in the shootout after the high school game
in downtown Pasadena. The ammunition type found in the car and the ammunition found at the Pasadena crime scene also matched. Shortly afterwards PPD detectives and ATF executed multiple search and arrest warrants tied to the Pasadena shootout. The rifles purchased from the crew and the pistols tossed from the vehicle were traced by ATF’s National Tracing Center (NTC) and proven to be stolen in the days, weeks, and months preceding the investigation, with most of the residences belonging to law enforcement officers or firefighters. Nichols was linked to almost all the burglaries associated with the recovered firearms. He received a little more than two years in federal prison and three years of supervise release on a felon in possession charge. Denham was sentenced to almost two years in federal prison and three years of supervised release on a felon in possession charge. Crawford was sentenced to almost five years in federal prison and three years of supervised release on a felon in possession charge.

ay one visit to Homage in Old Town Pasadena and you’ll wonder why you’ve been wasting your time looking for gift inspiration elsewhere. Owned by designer Jill Pearson and her husband Bill, the selections here prove Pearson has taste to spare. “I worked for a retail entrepreneur that was a mentor to me for over 7 years—I learned a lot from him,” said Pearson, whose experience took root in 1992 when she began to design and manufacture semi-precious jewelry. “All that time I dreamed of having a retail store—and then this darling space on Holly Street opened up. One of my best friends was relocating her store (Elisa B) to the street too, so it felt like it was meant to be.” Pearson chose the name Homage to pay tribute to her mom, a fellow artist, and other artisans that populate Pasadena and environs. “The artists and business owners are the most inspiring part of the gifts/jewelry

business,” she said. “There is a camaraderie; a level of respect and sharing in the creative community now that was not evident when my business was young and growing.” The inspiration that fuels Pearson’s curatorial skill is evident, too. At Homage, the books are intriguing, the
jewelry delicate, the aesthetic refined but welcoming. In short, there’s nothing tacky about the place. “I spend a lot of time selecting the merchandise to make sure it’s a unique mix that’s both new and exciting, but also has a sense of familiarity,” she said. She and her
staff also make a point of providing customers with plenty of information on the artists and items before suggesting a purchase. “My staff makes a sincere effort to welcome everyone as a person, and not just a customer,” Pearson said. “We realize that some people just
want to browse and look at nice things, and we want to make sure that they know they can feel comfortable doing that!” With items that range from a few dollars to higherend and a clientele that’s just as broad, Homage enjoys the happy situation of having
mass appeal. It’s something special for an independent boutique. “My husband and I have been strong proponents of independent retailing for as many years as we have been in the business. We understand the strength of internet sales, however, we also believe there will always be a need for brick and mortar that is done right,” she said. As for being based in Old Town Pasadena? Pearson is a loyal fan. “We are lucky to be on Holly Street, where the retail shops are all independents and nearly all female-owned, and the Old Pasadena Management District does an excellent job in supporting the independent businesses in the area,” she said. “What’s not to like?” Homage is located at 2 East Holly Street in Old Town Pasadena. One of Radnoti’s first rides with her mountain bike involved pushing through overgrown shrubbery for miles, a terrain that Hickey feared would scare her away from the sport. “Instead, Jordan had a smile from ear to ear,” Hickey said. “We were embarrassed that her first ride had so many obstacles, but Jordan gives all of her heart to everything she does. She brings joy to us all.” Radnoti is no stranger to

3 Different Ways I lost 20 pounds

eat less, or sometimes even “just eat healthy”. Obviously those lines never helped anyone out, otherwise, our lives would be much less complicated. I’ve experienced multiple instances where I’ve been able to shed roughly 20 pounds of weight, and after all of those experiences, I’ve finally found out what made the results last. To give a little perspec-
tive, I’m a male, 5 feet and 8 inches tall, with a starting weight each time between 165-167 pounds. Before you try to imitate or replicate the results of my experiences, check with your physician or qualified professional to make sure that any of the following is safe for you. When high school came around, I started a routine workout schedule of 3-5
sessions a week and maintained that for the most part of my high school career. Once I stepped foot in college, I fell off the wagon for a couple months and noticed that I put on some weight. At this point I weighed in at around 167 pounds. Without any intention to lose weight, I just decided that I wanted to get back a little of that muscle that I lost. I dove back into a full workout program without hesitation. Right off the bat, I was training 6 times a week for about 1.5 hours, each session, of pure weight lifting. For those of you who haven’t experienced being a little too ambitious after a long period of inactivity, the best way to describe it would be that I was painfully sore for an 3 entire weeks. 5 weeks later, I had successfully burned through 20 pounds of fat. Gold Line Offers Easy Brunch Options in Pasadena Jackie Gonzales jackiegonzales3392@gmail.com

reakfast may be considered the most important meal of the day, but brunch can often be the most enjoyable. Specialty sweet delights straight from the griddle, savory amalgamations of egg, cheese, meat and vegetables, and refreshing fruity cocktails combine to make the perfect midmorning feast. For residents of the Foothills, the Metro Gold Line provides easy access to plenty of brunch options within walking distance. My girlfriend and I recently visited three restaurants at three different Gold Line stops in Pasadena, each with their own unique qualities and delicious meals. My first stop was Del Frisco’s Grille off of Lake Ave, only about a 10 minute walk from the train station. We began with the brunch tradition of cocktails, her ordering the White Sangria and myself a simple screwdriver. Although, I quickly wished I had also ordered a Sangria if only to enjoy the small “fruitcicle” that adds the extra fruity flavor to the wine. For our meals we each
went for a classic with the Del Frisco’s signature touch. I would definitely recommend their chicken and waffles, the secret of which lies in the spicy syrup they give you to smother the dish in. The other meal of choice was the red velvet waffle, which subtly brings in that chocolate flavor of a red velvet cake and builds upon it with berries. Finally, if you are a bruncher who prefers a little food with your midmorning cocktails, Del Frisco’s drinks by the carafe or build your own Bloody Mary should place this spot at the top of your list. Next on the path was Russel’s, a small breakfast spot a short 5 minute walk from Memorial Park Station. Russel’s is a fairly small, intimate restaurant which makes your meal feel that much more homemade. My girlfriend and I chose the latter and it was well worth the wait. From her raspberry mimosa to my feast entitled “The Big One” this quaint spot does everything right. Read More at, ArcadiaWeekly.com, MonroviaWeekly.com, PasadenaIndependent.com

5 Ways to Make The Blind Date Less Awkward hedda muskat Author of The Dating Mystique heddamuskat@gmail.com
D
ating a complete stranger that you have no clue about can be pretty scary, especially with all the weirdo’s and freaks out there. With the phenomenon of online dating, even though you may be texting each other prior to the date and by the time you meet face to face, it’s still considered a blind date. That’s because most people do not look like their profile photos. Don’t make your profile photo so amazing. Let your date be surprised at how truly stunning you are when they meet you in person. If you look too different from your online photo, like worse, then your date will be disappointed and that will kick the date off to an awkward start. It will shut them down and create moments of silence and uncomfortable conversation. Keep those

expectations before the date to a minimum and surprise them in person with your fantastic looks and fun personality. Since the first blind date is all about those first few seconds of attraction, if you win them over on the attraction side first, the rest of the night should be less tense and more about a natural great way to get to know each other. Here are 5 tips to get through the first blind date: 1. Don’t plan a long

date. A coffee, drink or a dessert gets you in and out of there faster. Plus you won’t feel handcuffed to spend more time than necessary. 2. Don’t meet at their friends place or be their date at a work event. You’re on their turf now and that gives them the upper hand. Pick something neutral, like a train station café, or a wine tasting. 3. Don’t reveal too much about your depress-
ing side. If there are silent moments and you’re stuck on what to talk about look around you and strike up a conversation about what you see. Keep the chat light. 4. Don’t feel like you have to be too funny. Guys can start getting silly with the waitress, or girls can gush over a baby at the next table and that can be annoying. Save your annoying nervous energy for marriage. 5. Don’t be your dates therapist if they open up about how messed up their own life is. Take that as a red flag and try and listen and nod your head a lot. Let them talk and if you’ll know how messed up they truly are if they talk for a half hour without asking you one thing about you. CAREER CORNER SXSW 2018 Recap: My First Year Experience Angela COPELAND, angela@copelandcoaching.com
I
recently had the opportunity to attend South by Southwest in Austin, Texas for the first time. If you’ve never been, SXSW is a giant festival in downtown Austin that draws in thousands of people. Founded in 1987, SXSW has boasted an economic impact to Austin of over $300 M in past years. Since it started, SXSW has grown in both size and scope. It is now a combination of a number of festivals in one, including music, film, comedy, interactive, health and more. My main focus was on the “more” part. I attended a number of sessions on topics related to today’s workplace trends. The workplace sessions were structured in one of two ways. Either a single speaker would give a lecture on one topic, or a panel of three to five experts would weigh in on a particular issue. Topics ranged from negotiation to sexism to diversity to new employer perks to faith in the workplace to the gender pay gap to neurodiversity. This was a lot of ground to cover in
a short amount of time! As you can imagine, the speakers were both incredibly talented and informative. In fact, I’ve had the opportunity to interview a number of them for my podcast. So many important ideas were shared in these workplace sessions. Some companies are now offering creative benefits, including paying back your student loans after you finish college. It’s no longer unusual to start your career over from scratch midway through, and more programs than ever are available to help make the process possible. Organizations are increasing their focus on diversity and inclusion, using both their existing teams and new technology to make it happen. But, the point that I really took away from my SXSW experience has to do with networking. You can listen to all of the lectures presented, but nothing compares to what you can learn from other people. And, SXSW is the perfect place to meet or reconnect with those people. I met up with a number of old colleagues during my visit. I met a number of new people,
from various industries and from around the world. And, I met a number of great people from career websites LinkedIn and Indeed. These conversations provided an incredible amount of value – more than I could have gained in any classroom. They led to new connections, new ideas, new podcast episodes, and new opportunities. The experience reminded me just how important networking is to your overall career. It’s not only important to meet new people, but it’s important to stay in touch. It’s important to reconnect. It’s important to help one another. Networking is very often what your next job is made from. I look forward to attending SXSW again next year. But, my focus on networking will increase. After all, where else in the world can you connect with so many creative and talented people in one place? Angela Copeland is a Career Coach and Founder of Copeland Coaching CopelandCoaching.com

Reader remembersd his well-mannered uninvited guest Dear Editor Luckily for us, not all bears who live here in Monrovia raise their offspring to be delinquent. Our local bear, who frequently visits the neighborhood, has obviously had a good
upbringing by his mama. One day not long ago, we left the house to do some errands and inadvertently left our garage door open. When we returned, a neighbor told us that during our absence they watched as a bear entered our garage, opened a spare refrigerator, and helped himself to some food. Well, that bear had
impeccable manners! Not only did he not spill anything on the floor, but he was careful not to damage the refrigerator – not even a scratch anywhere! Except for a bunch of grapes and some candy, the only thing missing was a thank you note from him. David Q Monrovia

Bulldogs Off To A Shaky Start Monrovia Let’s One Slip Away Against San Marino

espite going 10-4 in preseason, the Bulldogs of Pasadena baseball (10-7) have hit a rough patch in the wake of Pacific League play. Early on, it seemed the Bulldogs could be a dark horse in the race for the Pacific League crown. Even with powerhouses like Arcadia and Crescenta Valley in the mix, Pasadena was making a serious case for themselves. The Bulldogs were also on a four-game winning streak within the final weeks of March that included solid victories over South Pasadena, Bosco Tech, Salesian and Cathedral. Pasadena’s best win on paper was an 11-0 shutout of St. Anthony on March 3 during the Dave Moore Classic. In that fixture with St. Anthony, pitcher Alvie Castro threw a complete seven innings and only surrendered three hits to go along with two strikeouts. Infielder David

Banuelos and catcher Adrain DePasquale led the way offensively as Banuelos knocked in three RBIs while DePasquale contributed two RBIs but was 3-3 at the plate. League play, on the other hand, has not been kind to the Bulldogs as they dropped their fist three games to Crescenta Valley twice and Burroughs once. The team’s offense put up stagnant performances, which is most likely due the high-caliber competition. However, the Bulldogs have a chance to begin another winning streak
as they managed to defeat Burroughs 7-1 in the second leg of their two-game series. Castro posted another brilliant performance, going 6.1 innings while delivering 11 strikeouts. Closer Nik Moran came in to finish the job as the senior gave up no hits and dealt one strikeout. On deck for Pasadena is the second game of their two-part series with Hoover (0-4) on Friday. This series will present the Bulldogs with a good opportunity to gain some ground on the Pacific League leaders.
Despite its best effort in league play this season, Monrovia softball were edged out 7-5 in extra innings by the San Marino Titans on Monday. The Wildcats are off to a less-than-ideal start in the Rio Hondo League, routing South Pasadena 15-4 but losing by a combined score of 19-8 to La Canada and Temple City. Monrovia’s latest defeat came at the hands of San Marino, who had an identical 1-2 record to the Wildcats going into Monday’s contest. In the first inning, the Titans were on the board first as they leaked out to a 1-0 advantage. However, Monrovia responded with a three-run

third inning and a two-run fourth inning to open up a 5-1 lead. Senior infielder Kaitlin Bush was one of the main catalysts in Monrovia’s offense, providing two RBIs while going 1-3 at the plate. Sophomore catcher Alexis Barroso also added one RBI and was the only Wildcat to have at least
two hits in the game. Unfortunately for Monrovia, their bats went quiet the rest of the way, which allowed San Marino to even the score in the final two frames. The Titans’ late-game momentum carried them in the extra inning as they tacked on two more runs to take the game.

Apaches Looking To Make Waves In Pacific League Having not won a league title since 2007, Arcadia softball is back for another season and ready to make a serious run at the Pacific crown. This year, the Apaches already hit the mid-way point in the season and are four games into Pacific League play. While the team has hovered around .500 for most of the 2018 campaign, its having trouble stringing together some solid wins to
gain some real traction. However, Head Coach Richard Klumpp remains optimistic that Arcadia can find its stride, as they own a 2-2 record in league so far. In Apaches’ league victories this season, they blew out Hoover and Pasadena by a combined score of 24-1. Despite the impressive outings, Arcadia was humbled 12-2 by Burbank on March 27 and 8-2 by Glendale last Thursday.
On the season, statistical leaders include catcher Susan Harrison, who is spearheading the Apaches’ offense with arguably the best year of her career. The senior has recorded 18 RBIs, crushed three home runs and is hitting above .400. In the circle, freshman sensation Sophia Garzona has done most of the heavy lifting, dealing 16 strikeouts with an ERA of 2.60 in 32.1 innings pitched.
