LITTLE FREE LIBRARY UNVEILED AT MONROVIA POLICE STATION

Since 1996

Volume 22, NO. 10

MONROVIA STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN 32ND ANNUAL LOS ANGELES COUNTY SCIENCE OLYMPIAD It was a cold and rainy day in Southern California, but that did not dampen the spirit of the Science Olympiad team from Santa Fe Computer Science Magnet who participated in 32nd Annual Los Angeles County Science Olympiad at Rio Hondo College on Saturday, March 3rd. Santa Fe has been participating in this annual regional tournament for at least a decade

and this year saw the team ranked 18th overall out of 40 competing schools. While Saturday's rain certainly added some logistical challenges for the team, the students, along with their head coach Mrs. Roxana Yanko (8th grade science teacher at Santa Fe), worked together to meet those challenges head-on SEE OLYMPIAD PAGE 13

Allen Allensworth is being honored this Saturday with the unveiling of the first Neighborhood Treasure plaque at a Monrovia Area Partnership Block Party at the Second Baptist Church in Monrovia, a church he founded in 1904. Allensworth ultimately went on to fame as the founder of

the central valley community that carries his name. It was the first town established, funded and governed by African Americans. Monrovia was also the site of Allensworth’s death in 1914 when he was struck by a motorcycle. It was the journey that led Allensworth first to Monrovia and then to the SEE ALLENSWORTH PAGE 12

onrovia Chief of Police Alan Sanvictores unveiled a new Little Free Library in front of the police station last Thursday. It was doubling fitting that the introduction of the Library took place that day as earlier that morning members of the department as well as adult volunteers from throughout the community has read to aloud in every elementary school classroom in

the city in honor of the birthday of Theodore Seuss Geisel, better known by his middle name, Dr. Suess. Later that evening the Monrovia Reads foundation honored the former chief of police, Jim Hunt with its Literacy Legacy Award. Hunt, with help form Lt. Jaime Alfaro, built the Little Free Library his former department unveiled. Hunt was not the only one who worked on the Little Library. The Monrovia Police Officers Association SEE LIBRARY PAGE 13

OK, that was funny – a bit unnerving for me, but funny. If you read last week’s column (newspaper version), you probably thought one of two things: either “that doesn’t sound like Pam,” or, “oops, the paper made a cut and paste mistake and reprint-

ed another article in that space.” Whichever you thought, you were correct -- now let’s try this again… As I was saying, Frooza (521 S. Myrtle, west side) will have their ‘soft opening” this coming SEE OLD TOWN PAGE 12
