City Health Officer Urges Residents to get Vaccinated Against Flu Strain that Could Cause Severe Disease The City Health Officer is reminding Long Beach residents that it is not too late to get vaccinated to protect against the flu, as the strain of influenza circulating this year is known to cause severe illness. “Flu season typically peaks in January and February, so there is still time to protect yourself and your family from the flu,” said Anissa Davis, MD, MPH, Long Beach City Health Officer. “Getting the flu vaccine can prevent people from getting sick, or may lessen the severity of symptoms for those who become ill.” Reports of flu are now widespread throughout California, according to the California Department of Public Health. Los Angeles County has already reported 19 influenza-associated deaths in the 2017-2018 flu season, which is a sober reminder that flu can lead to serious illness. Local Duarte Couple Cruises to Their Own Beat To say that Chuck and Susan Johnson are avid travelers is an understatement. The residents of Westminster Gardens senior living community in Duarte recently returned from their 99th cruise together. In 1975, the couple embarked on their first trip shortly after they were married. Forty-three years later, they’ll hit the century mark on their way to Hawaii in February. Additional passages in 2018 have also been booked to the Caribbean, London, Alaska, the Mississippi River and Mexico. Beyond great food and entertainment, cruises offer the Johnsons an outlet for a shared passion of theirs – ballroom dancing. What started as an inexpensive hobby as newlyweds has transformed into four decades of memories. Whenever they’re on the open water, they spend every evening dancing the waltz, cha-cha or other favorites from port to port. Back on dry land, the Johnsons’ maintenance-free lifestyle at Westminster Gardens supports their globetrotting. The Johnsons remain active in three local dance clubs, and even teach a class to fellow residents at the community. Every Monday afternoon, for about an hour, they put 6-8 couples through their paces. Studies have shown dancing has numerous health benefits for people of all ages, including older adults. The County of Riverside wants Amazon to expand its presence in the region and offered multiple potential sites in a proposal submitted late 2017 along with $12.8 million in local incentives to entice the online retailer to open its second corporate headquarters here. The 106-page bid highlights the diversity, affordability and business-friendly environment of the region, where Amazon already has three distribution centers. With all of the fun in the sun that Southern California is known for without the high cost of living and housing shortage of the coastal communities, Riverside County is the logical choice for Amazon. “We have affordable housing in one of the nation’s most expensive regions.
