City Health Officer Urges Residents to get Vaccinated Against Flu Strain that Could Cause Severe Disease The City Health Officer is reminding Long Beach residents that it is not too late to get vaccinated to protect against the flu, as the strain of influenza circulating this year is known to cause severe illness. “Flu season typically peaks in January and February, so there is still time to protect yourself and your family from the flu,” said Anissa Davis, MD, MPH, Long Beach City Health Officer. “Getting the flu vaccine can prevent people from getting sick, or may lessen the severity of symptoms for those who become ill.” Reports of flu are now widespread throughout California, according to the California Department of Public Health. Los Angeles County has already reported 19 influenza-associated deaths in the 2017-2018 flu season, which is a sober reminder that flu can lead to serious illness. Early surveillance conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicates that See Page 3

Local Duarte Couple Cruises to Their Own Beat To say that Chuck and Susan Johnson are avid travelers is an understatement. The residents of Westminster Gardens senior living community in Duarte recently returned from their 99th cruise together. In 1975, the couple embarked on their first trip shortly after they were married. Forty-three years later, they’ll hit the century mark on their way to Hawaii in February. Additional passages in 2018 have also been booked to the Caribbean, London, Alaska, the Mississippi River and Mexico. Beyond great food and entertainment, cruises offer the Johnsons an outlet for a shared passion of theirs – ballroom dancing. What started as an inexpensive hobby as newlyweds has transformed into four decades of memories. Whenever they’re on the open water, they spend every evening dancing the waltz, cha-cha or other favorites from port to port. Back on dry land, the Johnsons’ maintenance-free lifestyle at Westminster Gardens supports their globetrotting. The Johnsons remain active in three local dance clubs, and even teach a class to fellow residents at the community. Every Monday afternoon, for about an hour, they put 6-8 couples through their paces. Studies have shown dancing has numerous health benefits for people of all ages, including older adults. The County of Riverside wants Amazon to expand its presence in the region and offered multiple potential sites in a proposal submitted late 2017 along with $12.8 million in local incentives to entice the online retailer to open its second corporate headquarters here. The 106-page bid highlights the diversity, affordability and business-friendly environment of the region, where Amazon already has three distribution centers. With all of the fun in the sun that Southern California is known for without the high cost of living and housing shortage of the coastal communities, Riverside County is the logical choice for Amazon. “We have affordable housing in one of the nation’s most expensive regions. Turnaround Arts to Measure Impact of NAMM Foundation’s Investments in School Music Education Programs Turnaround Arts and The NAMM Foundation will implement a research project to explore the impact, value and efficacy of The NAMM Foundation’s investment in Turnaround Arts schools’ music departments. Since Turnaround Arts’ creation in 2012, The NAMM Foundation has contributed more than $550,000 in music education expansion grants to 70 Turnaround Arts schools nationwide. Turnaround Arts is a program of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. “As schools come on board with Turnaround Arts, one of the immediate investments made is in their music departments, thanks to the generous and reliable support from the NAMM Foundation,” said Kathy Fletcher, National Director of Turnaround Arts. “These grants have helped students at Turnaround Arts schools nationwide experience the power of music within a well-rounded education. With this new study, we will seek to measure how that experience has reverberated throughout each school and the overall impact.” Turnaround Arts implements arts education as a school reform tool in struggling elementary and middle schools. The NAMM Foundation has supported

the development of music programming in Turnaround Arts schools with instruments, instrument storage and/or maintenance, music-based artist residencies, performance space improvements, or some combination thereof. Music education grants have ranged from $6,000 to $10,000 per school. “Since Turnaround

Arts’ initial pilot program, NAMM members have been involved in Turnaround Arts schools, bringing instruments and supporting the growth of budding music departments, many times from scratch,” said Mary Luehrsen, Executive Director of The NAMM Foundation. “We’ve listened as hallways filled with music and have seen

students’ faces light up playing an instrument. With this research, we hope to learn more about how to make the biggest impact on music learning.” The study will seek to characterize NAMM Foundation’s support of Turnaround Arts schools and the impact on the schools’ music education programs, including whether

As the holiday season wraps up, the Department of Public Works, Environmental Services Bureau (ESB) has kicked off its annual Holiday Tree Recycling program, known as “Treecycling.” This pro-

gram provides residents with multiple options for disposal of live holiday trees free of charge – while keeping the trees out of the trash. Through January 12, 2018, residents can drop off trees at locations through-

out the city, as shown on www.longbeach-recycles. org. “I encourage all Long Beach residents who have disposable holiday trees to head over to a Treecycling drop-off location,” said

Mayor Robert Garcia. “This recycling service helps prevent CO2 emissions, so let’s help keep Long Beach clean together.” Each year, the City collects an average of over 200 tons of holiday trees, which equal approximately tento fifteen-thousand trees. Trees that are dropped off at any of the twelve dropoff locations around the city, as well as those collected during the Citywide Treecycling Pick-Up, are sent to a chipping facility to be turned into landscaping mulch, or to a biomass conversion facility for energy generation. According to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency models, the diversion of this waste from landfills prevents CO2 emissions equivalent to the consumption of over 8,300 gallons of gasoline. Additionally, proper disposal of holiday trees through the Treecycling program prevents fire hazards by re-

this impact persisted over time and/or influenced other school programs, and whether the impact was associated with adaptive changes in student adjustment or school climate. Drs. Muna Shami and Charles Beekman are serving as co-principal investigators – from the Research and Evaluation department of the John

F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts’ Education division. The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is the national champion for arts learning and creativity. Committed to increasing opportunities for all people to participate in, learn about, and understand the arts, the Center offers programs and events that strive to reflect the nation and its communities, and that are accessible and inclusive for all. From the Center’s stages to classrooms and communities across the country, to online resources accessible nearly anywhere, the Center serves the burgeoning artist, the curious explorer, the student (of any age), the teacher and teaching artist—any person interested in arts learning and utilizing the arts for positive change. Since its inception, The NAMM Foundation has donated more than $16 million in support to domestic and international music education programs, scientific research, advocacy and public service programs to advance music making. The grants are funded in part by donations from the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) and its 10,300 member companies worldwide.

The Citywide Treecycling Pick-Up day will occur on Saturday, January 13, 2018. Residents with City refuse collection service may place their tree where trash is normally collected by 7:00 a.m. that morning. All trees must have decorations and stands removed, and trees over 12 feet tall should be cut in half. No artificial trees or trees generated from businesses are allowed at Treecycling drop-off locations (residential sources only).

the primary flu strain this year is influenza A (H3N2), which has been associated with higher rates of hospitalizations and deaths in persons 65 years and older and young children. The CDC recommends flu vaccine for everyone over six months of age, especially those at greatest risk for complications and those who live with or care for these individuals: • Pregnant women. • Children younger than five years of age. • Adults 65 years and older.

• People with weakened immune systems. • Those with certain medical conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, lung disease, or conditions affecting the nervous system. • People who are overweight or obese. • Those working or living in nursing homes or long-term care facilities. • Health care personnel. • Child care workers. Symptoms of flu include: fever, cough, sore

throat, runny nose, body aches, headaches, and fatigue. In addition to getting the flu vaccine, practicing good hygiene such as washing hands, covering one’s cough, and staying home when sick can prevent those around you from becoming ill. The Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services (Health Department) continues to vaccinate residents in preparation for the upcoming flu season. Since October, nearly 3,500 vaccines have been given at

25 different flu vaccination clinics throughout the City, including a drive-through vaccination clinic. In addition, the Health Department has provided almost 3,000 doses of flu vaccine to clinics throughout Long Beach to distribute to their patients. For more information about the flu, please visit http://bit.ly/2lmwZQP. The Health Department will be giving vaccinations at the Long Beach Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade on Saturday, January 13, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.

live between the beaches and the mountains. We have the Coachella and Stagecoach festivals, a strong economy, and we continue to grow,” said Riverside County Board Chairman John Tavaglione. “There’s no question that Riverside County should be prominent on Amazon’s radar.” The proposal includes nearly $12.8 million in incentives above and beyond what the State of California is offering to attract Amazon to the state. Riverside County can provide $400,000 annually for 10 years in on-the-job training reimbursements and $8.8 million in property taxes from the Capital Investment Incentive Program over 15 years, subject to the Board of Supervisors’ approval. The State of California also has offered numerous incentives to Amazon, including the California Competes Tax Credit, which could potentially provide Amazon with up to $200 million total in credits in five years. Some of the cities in the County of Riverside’s proposal are offering their own additional incen-

tives. Seattle-based Amazon announced last month it would solicit bids for a second headquarters where it would hire 50,000 new full-time employees over the next 10 to 15 years with an average annual total compensation of more than $100,000. The project is expected to have more than $5 billion in capital expenditures. Bids were due by midnight Thursday (10/19). Final site selection will occur in 2018. “Riverside County’s distinct value proposition to Amazon is simple: SoCal diversity, talent and imagination matched with affordability and value,” said Rob Field, Riverside County’s Assistant County Executive Officer/Economic Development Agency. “A Riverside County location provides ample room for HQ2’s growth and leverages all of Southern California’s economic and recreational resources.” The region meets the retailer’s requirements that it have more than 1 million people, a stable and business-friendly environment, potential to attract

and retain strong technical talent along with access to major highways, mass transit and an international airport. Included in the County of Riverside’s bid are two sites in the City of Riverside, which has been ranked as the No. 1 city where millennials are moving, No. 8 among America’s coolest cities, No. 2 as a hotspot for technology and No. 14 as the safest city metro area. The region also ranks as a top 10 metro for retaining college grads. The cities of Moreno Valley, Menifee and Murrieta each proposed two locations, the March Joint Powers Authority offered multiple options in its business park and the City of Perris proposed one location. All of their proposals were packaged in the County of Riverside’s bid, which can be viewed at www.rivcoeda.org The region’s strong track record of innovation make it a strong draw for Amazon with global businesses like Esri and hundreds of tech startups calling Inland Southern California home. The area also has double the job

growth of Los Angeles and a 27 percent lower cost of living than Amazon’s base of Seattle and a 42 percent lower cost of housing than Seattle. Inland job growth has outpaced the state and Southern California for the sixth consecutive year, and the region has the nation’s 14-largest workforce. The Internet giant also stressed the need for excellent institutions of higher education, and one of those played a role in the bid. The University of California, Riverside, which has a $2.7 billion annual economic impact, helped produce a video that was submitted as part of the package. The playful video was produced by UCR Professor of Theater and Film Rickerby Hinds and his students as part of the IE Film Initiative. In the short film, a woman plays the role of Inland Southern California on a date with a suitor who plays the role of Amazon. She touts the region’s attributes, and the intrigued man asks if she’s “for real.” The full video can be seen here https:// vimeo.com/238804981

An 18-year-old man has been charged with striking a man and killing the victim’s parrot Tuesday night, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced. At today’s court appearance, Edward Cervantes (dob 6/26/99) pleaded not guilty to two counts in case NA108127: felony cruelty to an animal and misdemeanor battery. His bail was set at $20,000. Prosecutors said at the time of the alleged crime,

Cervantes had been staying at a home for several months in the 1300 block of East Ocean Boulevard in Long Beach. On the evening of Dec. 26, Cervantes allegedly had an exchange with his host and struck him several times, prosecutors said. The defendant then reportedly assaulted and killed the host’s yellow-headed amazon parrot, prosecutors added. Soon after the attack, authorities located Cervantes

and took him into custody, according to prosecutors. The defendant is scheduled to return to court on Jan. 8 for a pre-preliminary hearing in Department S01 of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Long Beach Branch. If convicted as charged, he faces a maximum possible sentence of three years and six months in jail. The case is being investigated by the Long Beach Police Department.

On Thursday, December 28, 2017 at about 7:02 p.m., Deputies from the Victorville Station and rescue personnel from the San Bernardino County Fire Department responded to a single vehicle traffic collision near the intersection of US Hwy 395 and Eucalyptus Street. Upon arrival Deputies determined that a Burgundy Mercury Mariner was traveling north on US Hwy 395 and attempted to pass a big rig on the dirt shoulder. The driver of the Mercury lost control of the vehicle, causing the vehicle to overturn and roll multiple times.

Two subjects were ejected from the vehicle during the collision. One ejected occupant was pronounced deceased on scene and the other was transported by ground ambulance to Loma Linda University Medical Center. Three other occupants of the vehicle were transported to Loma Linda University Medical Center and other surrounding hospitals with moderate to major injuries. The driver of the Mercury Mariner, later identified as Brandon Blakely, fled the scene of the collision and was located by depu-

ties a short time later at his residence. Blakely was taken into custody and booked on multiple felony charges. MAIT Investigators are continuing the investigation into the collision and the cause. US Hwy 395 between Bear Valley Road and Main Street was closed during the investigation and was reopened at about 4:40 a.m. Anyone with information or anyone who may have witnessed the collision is urged to contact Deputy Adam Hylin, Deputy Chris Dekeyrel or Deputy Amir Awad from the Victorville Station.

129th Rose Parade Dazzles, Delights Millions Around the World Story and Photos by Galen Patterson/Terry Miller Opening act Todrick Hall and closing act Andy Grammer brought modern appeal to the parade, wonderfully contrasting the NapoleonicEra-inspired outfits of the marching bands. During the parade, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti identified Beacon Media News and gave them a personal smile from a masterfully crafted Los Angeles highlights float. The architectural masterpieces, combined with bio-organic ingenuity were

the real show-stoppers this year. Some blew clouds of smoke and ribbons, others displayed life-like coordination through animatronics. Though these floats will not remain assembled and colorful and they will not stand the test of time like so many architectural icons in Europe, they will remain in the memories of those who witnessed them in their full beauty, before the scores of worldwide citizens at the 2018 Rose Parade.

Rosemead City Notices REVISED NOTICE OF INTENT TO ADOPT A MITIGATED NEGATIVE DECLARATION AND REVISED NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING BEFORE THE PLANNING COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF ROSEMEAD ON FEBRUARY 5, 2018 NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Rosemead Planning Commission will consider a Mitigated Negative Declaration and will conduct a public hearing to consider the Garvey Earle Plaza Project at a Planning Commission Meeting on Monday, February 5, 2018 at 7:00 PM, at Rosemead City Hall, 8838 Valley Boulevard, Rosemead: CASE NO.: Design Review 16-04 – The City of Rosemead (hereafter referred to as “Lead Agency”) has completed an Initial Study (IS) of the proposed Garvey Earle Plaza Project to be located on a 0.874-acre site at the northeast corner of the intersection of Garvey Avenue and Earle Avenue in the City of Rosemead, California. The project site is developed as a used car lot. The existing used car lot and other site improvements will be demolished to allow construction of the proposed four–story mixed-use development with 7,520 square feet of retail/restaurant use on the first floor and 35 residential units on the second through fourth floors. The project includes a gym, kid’s room, lounge, and library. The project includes a density

bonus application under Senate Bill (SB) 1818 that allows density bonuses up to 35% for low-income housing. As a result, six (6) of the apartments will be available for low-income households for a minimum of 55 years and 29 market rate apartments for a total of 35 apartments. New landscaping will be provided around the project perimeter on the north, west and south. The project abuts the hotel east of the site. The project proposes 116 parking spaces, including 70 standard spaces, including two handicap spaces, for project residents in the subterranean parking structure and 46 standard spaces, including two handicap spaces and a commercial loading zone on the surface level. The project also proposes 14 bicycle parking spaces on the first floor and subterranean level. The building is 55’ in height, which includes the height of the decorative parapet. There is one point of site access from Earle Avenue that provides entry to the surface and subterranean parking structure. Delivery vehicles for the retail and restaurant uses will be restricted to two axle trucks with a maximum height of 8’-6”. ENVIRONMENTAL DETERMINATION: The Initial Study has been undertaken to determine if the proposed project may have a significant effect on the environment. The Initial Study was prepared and completed in accordance with the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) Guidelines. On the basis of the Initial Study, the City of Rosemead has concluded that the project would have significant impact, unless mitigated, therefore a Draft Mitigated Negative Declaration (MND) was prepared. The MND reflects the independent judgment of the City as a lead agency per CEQA Guidelines. The project site is not on a list compiled pursuant to Government Code section 65962.5. The proposed project is not considered a project of statewide, regional or area-wide significance and would not affect highways or other facilities under the jurisdiction of the State of California Department of Transportation. Copies of the Initial Study/Mitigated Negative Declaration are available on the City’s website, Rosemead Public Library, and on file at the City of Rosemead Planning Division located at 8838 Valley Blvd, Rosemead, CA 91770, for public review. Any person wishing to comment on the adequacy of the Mitigated Negative Declaration must submit such comments, in writing, to the City of Rosemead Planning Division, Attn: Cory Hanh, Associate Planner. Comments must be received within the 30-calendar day public review period from January 3, 2018 to February 1, 2018. Pursuant to California Government Code Section 65091, this public hearing notice has been published in at least one newspaper of general circulation within the local agency and has been mailed to all owners of real property as shown on the latest equalized assessment roll within 300 feet of the real property that is the subject of the hearing. Singer-Songwriter Jackson Browne to Receive Les Paul Innovation Award at 33rd Annual NAMM Tec Awards The NAMM Foundation has announced that singersongwriter Jackson Browne will receive the prestigious Les Paul Innovation Award at the 33rd Annual NAMM

Technical Excellence & Creativity Awards (NAMM TEC Awards), being held Saturday, January 27, 2018 in Anaheim, CA. The award is given on behalf of the Les

dio pioneer, inventor and musician, Les Paul. Browne has written and performed some of the most iconic and moving songs in popular music and has defined a genre of songwriting charged with honesty, emotion and personal politics. He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2004 and into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2007. His debut album came out on David Geffen's Asylum Records in 1972. Since then, he has released fourteen studio albums and four collections of live performances, and has sold over 18 million albums in the U.S. Browne will be on tour in the spring of 2018. Tour dates can be found here. “Jackson Browne’s success as a singer, songwriter and guitarist has had a prolific impression on the music industry throughout his successful career,” said Michael Braunstein, Executive Director of the Les Paul Foundation. “Like Les Paul, Jackson has never shied away from expressing his emotions or thoughts through his music. I have no doubt that Les

would have liked to share a few jams with Jackson along the way.” Dubbed the “Knights of Soft Rock” by Rolling Stone, The Section will also be honored during the evening event as the newest inductees to the NAMM TEC Hall of Fame. Reaching their height in the 70s playing alongside the biggest names in the business, including James Taylor, Carole King, and Crosby, Stills and Nash, The Section also released three of their own imprints and toured and recorded with Jackson Browne in earlier years. While no longer recording collectively, each artist now actively works in the studio and on tour and consists of Danny Kortchmar (guitar), Craig Doerge (keyboards), Leland Sklar (bass), and Russ Kunkel (drums). They’ll reunite on stage for a rare performance of some of their best-known hits in support of the evening’s celebration. The NAMM TEC Hall of Fame award was started in 1988 to honor pioneers of audio technology, as well as the music industry’s most

accomplished producers and audio technicians. In 2017, legendary Aerosmith engineer and producer Jack Douglas was inducted into the NAMM TEC Hall of Fame, and joined luminaries Skunk Baxter, Ed Cherney, Hal Blaine, Nathan East and others. The NAMM TEC Awards, held during the global gathering of music, sound and event technology at The NAMM Show, are bestowed annually in honor of the many individuals, companies and technical innovations used in sound recordings, films, broadcast television and video games. Nominees were announced earlier this year. Purchase tickets on site or in advance at https://www.tecawards. org/ for $65 (General Admission) or $195 (VIP). The show begins with a VIP-only reception at 6PM, followed by the awards ceremony at 7PM, held in the Hilton Anaheim Hotel’s Pacific Ballroom. Stand-up comedian and entertainer Demetri Martin will host the ceremony.
