fights the minute they left their front door. Athleticism in boys was strongly valued. Born in 1947, Larry said, “I had spinal meningitis at three and was physically challenged as a boy. I didn’t even get chosen to play Little League. I learned to adapt. I’ve never See Page 4

Long Beach Accomplishes 2017 Mobility Challenge Goal – 'Count Me in LB' The City of Long Beach announces the success of the 2017 citywide mobility challenge, “Count Me in LB.” In 2017, a total of 1,109,270 cyclists and/ or pedestrians passed the Eco-Counter, located on the beach path near Belmont Pier. The goal of this challenge was to reach a total count of 1,000,000 by December 31, 2017. The challenge was intended to encourage residents to take advantage of the many mobility options the City has to offer, and to utilize social media through the #CountMeinLB campaign, to inspire others to get involved. “Long Beach continues to be recognized as one of the most walkable and bikeable cities in the U.S. and reaching this goal shows that more and more residents are riding and walking,” said Mayor Robert Garcia. “I congratulate those who participated
and encourage everyone to take advantage of the many bike paths, walking trails, and swimming facilities our City has to offer.” In the past, the City’s Traffic Engineering Division collected usage data annually by doing physical counts of pedestrians and bicycles. The physical counts provided only a snap shot, from which the City could project ridership and activity in a particular area. In September of 2016, the City’s Public Works Department installed the Eco-Counter, an automated counting system used to collect more accurate usage data on the beach paths. The system installed on the beach path has the capabilities to distinguish between cyclists and pedestrians walking or jogging along the newly separated pedestrian path.
City of Riverside Commences Two-Year Budget Development Process The City of Riverside is encouraging public participation in the formation of the 2018-20 municipal budget with multiple opportunities to speak at public meetings, starting with the Riverside City Council on Jan.16. Riverside creates a twoyear budget, within the context of a five-year spending plan, so the creation of the 2018-20 budget will impact city spending priorities for the foreseeable future. To encourage a robust amount of public input, the City has scheduled meetings with the City Council, the Budget Engagement Commission and the public in various
neighborhoods around the city, as well as with City employees and the business community. The Budget Engagement Commission, recently created to advise the City Council on the budget and related matters, will be leading several citywide discussions on the budget, including the review of projections and preliminary balancing measures proposed by departments. A schedule of public meetings, as well as key information about the budget, can be found at https:// riversideca.gov/finance/ See Page 3
