ICONIC DENNY’S WINDMILL IN ARCADIA MAKES A GRAND SLAM THROUGH THE ROOF George Fasching says plans to rebuild are already underway Story & Photos Terry MILLER tmiller@beaconmedianews.com
Almost a year and a half ago we told you about a man and his great plan to get Denny’s Iconic windmill running again. Well, we are sad to report that on Friday morning, Dec 29 the iconic landmark fell off and one blade sliced through the restaurant around 7:30 am. “To everything there is a season,” the late Pete Seeger wrote in the late ‘50s. How appropriate that on Wednesday afternoon, June 29 last year, the man whose idea of getting the iconic windmill turned again became a reality. Only to be destroyed in a freak incident On Dec 29, 2017 The humble albeit wellknown man who worked diligently behind the scenes with a letter writing campaign wants no notoriety about getting the windmill turning again but we can tell you he specializes in keeping Arcadia’s horseless carriages clean and shiny. On Friday, he was devastated when he saw what had happened. But if you know George Fasching…nothing will stop
this man from getting back to business. Fasching told Arcadia Weekly Wednesday that there is a “Distinct possibility that the windmill will be replaced.” Denny’s CEO and the City of Arcadia gave the thumbs up to the local visionary and before you knew what was happening, the new motor was installed and the fabled Van De Camp windmill was working great until last Friday. Originally built in 1967, the Arcadia windmill sits atop the building’s Googiestyle architecture roof and was designed by Pasadena architects Harold Bissner and Harold Zook, according to LA Conservancy. The remnants of the now infamous windmill lie behind Denny’s with ‘caution’ tape strapped to the mangled metal. Fasching told the Weekly that the Chamber of Commerce and City Officials are working out the details and all for the replacement. One Danish wind chime motor expert, Dr. Ted H. Jorgensen said he thought this would eventually happen as the windmill was going antiSEE WINDMILL PAGE 10

Arcadia PD Successfully Battles Property Crime Program offers’ city-wide consistency Galen PATTERSON Galen.Patterson303@gmail.com
The City of Arcadia has seen an increase in property crime in recent years, according to the
Arcadia Police Department. Just about two years ago, Arcadia PD had been considering ideas to combat property crime directly. “We saw an uptick in reports being generated in losses of packages,” says Sergeant Brett Bourgeous of Arcadia
PD Detective Bureau. Bourgeous says the natural remedy was to deploy bait packages with GPS trackers. The City of Redlands had also noticed a similar problem, tried a bait package program and reported good success.
Redlands PD had stared the same program in 2011, after cutbacks dropped their staff from 98 officers to 72. The Police Chief at the time was looking for ways to do more with less. SEE ARCADIA PD PAGE 11
