PPOA Supports Pasadena Officer Accused of Racial Bias A jury awarded $750,000 to a door- to-door salesman who was held at gunpoint by off-duty police Officer Sam De Sylva while soliciting in the officer’s neighborhood. The salesman was arrested, but prosecutors declined to file any charges against him. The Pasadena Police Officers Association (PPOA) has said the organization, as well as Chief John Perez, stand firmly behind the officer and don’t believe he did anything wrong. David Llanes, treasurer of PPOA, issued the following statement last week on behalf of the association and its entire membership in response to an online article published last week on Pasadena Now:

“Many of us have been victims of eager, unprofessional, rude and overly aggressive solicitors, who come to our doors uninvited and continue to push their wares even after being asked to leave. The majority of solicitors are hardworking individuals trying to make a living. But, there are also those who have nefarious intentions. Criminal groups casing homes to see who is home and what may be inside as you are distracted by their so-called, ‘sales pitch’ is a common occurrence. Several published news articles describe this crime trend. Read More at, PasadenaIndependent.com NEWS

T

he American Legion celebrated its centennial year by hosting a black tie party and honoring four Medal of Honor recipients at the historic American Legion Post 13 in the City of Pasadena. They also showcased a float at the Tournament of Roses Parade for the first time in over 30 years. The four Medal of Honor recipients rode on the float along with other important members representing the organization at the Rose Parade, and received the red carpet treatment at the American Legion black tie event on Dec. 30. The honorees are all from different generations and each represents a war era. The names of the Medal of Honor recipients recognized at the black tie party event are: Corporal Hershel “Woody”

Williams of WWII, Corporal Ron Rosser of the Korean War, Walter “Joe” Marm of the Vietnam War and Britt Slabinski of the Global War on Terror. Corporal Williams fought dangerously for four hours covered only by four riflemen under relentless enemy fire in Iwo Jima, Japan as a demolition sergeant. Corporal Rosser was determined to fight against all odds, charging the enemy with only a caliber and a grenade, and single-handedly killed at least 13 of the enemy in Korea. Second Lieutenant Marm decimated four enemies under heavy fire, charged across 30 meters of open ground killing more enemies and ultimately broke enemy fire in Vietnam. Last but not least is Senior Chief Slabinski who put his life in danger to rescue his teammate who was lost when a helicopter crashed after being hit by enemy fire

before landing atop a 10,000foot snow covered mountain in Afghanistan. Are you intimidated at all by anything you just read? Or, are you proud of the way these men represented our country in matters of life and death around the world? All of these men have displayed the highest traditions of fighting spirit, courage, devotion and leadership in their own line of service. Monrovia Loses Another Gem:

Charlotte Schamadan

Susan motander motander@yahoo.com

M

onrovia is known as the Gem City of the Foothills, but in many respects the gems are her many dedicated and involved residents. Sadly, on the Friday before Christmas the community lost Charlotte Schamadan when she lost her almost decade long battle with sinus cancer and other health issues. Charlotte was not a native Monrovian but moved here from Alhambra in 1979 and immediately adopted her new hometown. As one of her good friends Joanne Spring explained: “Charlotte Schamadan loved Monrovia! Monrovia loved Charlotte Schamadan! This highly public consensual love affair was a win/win relationship that benefited both more than those of us who witnessed it will ever fully comprehend.” Despite being deaf Charlotte was unstoppable. She became involved in election campaigns, chairing many of them over the years. Locally she was involved with the Quota Club (even serving as the International President of that Organization), Monrovia Historic Preservation Group, The Monrovia Education Foundation, Monrovia Guild of Children’s Hospital, Foothill Unity Center (serving several terms as

president), and Foothill Developmental School. All this and she found time to serve on the local cable commission and at least two Chamber of Commerce committees. Years ago she was one of the members of the Centennial Committee to celebrate Monrovia’s 100th birthday in 1986. Out of this grew the Monrovia Historical Museum Foundation when the members of the Centennial Committee felt something permanent was needed. Likely as a result of her own hearing challenges, Charlotte was a strong

supporter of the House Ear Institute. This non-profit is dedicated to advancing hearing science working with researchers, and educating those in need of assistance. Her husband Lee wishes to hold services on Charlotte’s birthday on Jan 19 at a time to be announced. Services are still pending and will be noted here as soon as the family lets this publication know. Read More at, MonroviaWeekly.com, under Community

It was a cold night for parade goers and New Year’s Eve revelers but the Mario Brothers and scores of cars

cruised Colorado Boulevard during Pasadena’s annual riteof-passage - people watching on the pre-parade route. In East Pasadena, the British pub Lucky Baldwin’s celebrated early (at 4 p.m. PST) which was the official

time London celebrated the ringing in of the New Year. While attendance was lower than average this year, there was no shortage of fun on Pasadena streets and in local businesses, particularly those that served champagne.

2019 ROSE PARADE SUFFERS MECHANICAL INTERRUPTION AND ENDS ON HIGH NOTE Galen PATTERSON galen.patterson303@gmail.com

T

he 2019 Rose Parade began on a chilly, winter morning on the first day of the new year. The performers staged themselves and equipment along Orange Grove Avenue in Pasadena, anticipating the moment when the show would begin. Bare-shouldered dancers moved rapidly in an effort to increase their body heat, and attendees

shivered under blankets in the stands alongside the road. One woman danced fearlessly in front of her seat and with a quick announcement the parade began. Grand Marshall and 10-time Grammy Awardwinner Chaka Khan performed a song for the audience, and while her float carried on along the parade route, Khan retreated to her Grand Marshall’s vehicle to be displayed later in the show. The order of march from that moment on held to

true Rose Parade fashion: eclectic, with a wide array of ideas and displays. One minute, a massive, flower-covered and cleverly designed machine would roll by with several people waving from it. The next minute, a unit of therapeutic, dwarfed minihorses trot by followed by marching bands from around the world. Read More at, PasadenaIndependent.com

Social Media Snubs 130th Rose Parade and Chaka Khan Terry MILLER tmiller@beaconmedianews.com

This year’s Rose Parade was a little different than previous years as well as rather windy, cold and full of technical difficulties including some serious sound issues for the opening act, Chaka Khan. By all accounts, it was also far less crowded

than in previous years. Chaka Khan performed the opening number with energy and vitality usually reserved for bigger venues however, there were some serious issues preventing people from hearing her performance and one on social media accused Khan of being drunk. “My New Year’s resolution to always stay positive

made it until I saw Chaka Khan’s performance at the #RoseBowlParade #NewYearsDay #HappyNewYear2019 #RoseParade Well, it was POSITIVELY awful.” Another Twitter user wrote, “The opening show of the #TournamentOfRoses parade was terrible. It sounded like Chaka Khan was singing in a canyon. Not

a good start to the parade.” The 130th Rose Parade featured floral floats, spirited marching bands and high-stepping equestrian units along the 5.5–mile route down Colorado Boulevard. Then this happened: the creators of a Rose Parade float that caught fire and caused a considerable delay in the parade on New Year’s

Day could face a fine, Tournament of Roses officials said Wednesday, according to the Los Angeles Times. The Chinese American Heritage Foundation’s float, which depicted the moment when two locomotives met face to face upon the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad, was disabled about 9:45 a.m. by a small fire near Orange

Dodgers Visit Arcadia’s Camino Grove Elementary School It was nothing but blue at Camino Grove Elementary School recently, proving the power of the pen is truly inspirational. A day after the Dodgers lost in the World Series, the entire fifth grade class was given a homework assignment they will likely never forget. The task: write the Los Angeles Dodgers a hand-written letter to congratulate the team on another remarkable season and maybe try and lift their spirits a bit after the tough loss. The Roadrunners hit the assignment out of the park. The Dodgers were delighted to receive the letters, many accompanied with detailed

illustrations and baseball artwork. The team was so inspired and impressed, they had Justin Turner, Kenley Jansen, Joc Pederson, and Manager Dave Roberts read some of the letters for the team’s annual holiday video. By way of an additional surprise, Greg Taylor and Erick Vazquez from the Dodger’s Video Production team visited Camino Grove to debut the video and interview the students to capture their reaction while watching the video for the first time. The nearly 100 students who took part in this assignment were also given Dodgers hats and shirts.

Soft Serve With a Swish

BUSINESS

Dip into The Pond Ice Cream shop in Arcadia emily g. peters emilygpeters@gmail.com

W

e know you just made your resolution to get in shape in 2019, but we’ve already got your cheat day ready at The Pond Ice Cream in Arcadia. Barely a year old, The Pond is all about soft serve with an Instagram-worthy swish. It started when coffee shop owner Nancy Lien pivoted from beans to creams to explore flavors from her travels across the Pacific—aka “the pond.” “To Nancy, there’s no age to ice cream. She wanted to have a product that could be readily available to anyone at any time,” said The Pond Marketing Manager Brian Zheng. Open late (the boutique closes most nights at 10 p.m.), Lien focused on satisfying ice cream cravings no matter what time they occurred with Asian-oriented flavors like matcha, milk tea and edible charcoal

waffle cones. Accessibility was a necessity, too. “When developing the menu, Nancy didn’t want to exclude people who might be lactose intolerant, so she incorporated a dairyfree alternative for those who can’t digest milk,” said Zheng. Ice cream flavors at The Pond shift monthly, with a few standards constantly in the mix. So far the options are somewhat limited, but change keeps it interesting. “One of our most popular

ice creams is the Cocoa Bay; it’s coconut based but tastes more like chocolate,” said Zheng, whose personal favorite is the milk tea. “Nancy definitely wants to expand the menu and has many recipes in mind that she plans on releasing next year. With luck, visitors will find something new to try each time they come in.” Where The Pond adds variety is the toppings, from condensed milk to Froot Loops and more (we recommend adding Rice Krispies

for more crunch without too much sweetness). Every cone or cup is topped with a jaunty Goldfish cracker for obvious reasons. Classic ice cream scoops in favorite flavors like chocolate and vanilla are available, but soft serve is where The Pond shines. “We made the choice to go with soft serve because it complements our aesthetic the best,” explained Zheng. “It’s smooth, not too sweet, and gives the customer some creativity to pick out their own toppings to bring out different elements: crunchy, creamy, salty, refreshing.” So the next time you’ve hit a goal at the gym, celebrate with a dip in The Pond—no one there will judge you. The Pond Ice Cream is located at 55 E. Duarte Road #103 in Arcadia. For more information, contact The Pond team at thepond. business.site | (626) 869-8669 and follow along on Instagram and Facebook @thepondicecream.

Rainforests, Beaches, Small Ships and Adventure in 2019

Greg aragon gregsgetawaytravel@gmail.com

W

ith 2018 in the rear view mirror and a 2019 calendar opened wide on my desk, it is time to look ahead to one of the exciting getaways I have on the map for the New Year. I am looking at a return voyage aboard Windstar Cruises, and taking a Caribbean cruise in early march to Panama and Costa Rica Windstar Cruises specializes in small ships and intimate experiences. The company’s elegant, 148 to 310-passenger cruise ships offer a personalized approach that bring guests closer to each destination and every port, so they can see the world from new angles. Unlike typical mega-ships, Windstar boats can dock in tiny ports. This allows guests to see, hear and smell the places they are visiting in an unforgettable, up close fashion. I cruised with Windstar through Tahiti and the Caribbean a few years ago and the experience left an

indelible mark on my travelling soul. For 2019, Windstar is sailing to new destinations in the Caribbean and Latin America, including new ports of call in Mexico, Honduras, Grand Cayman, the Dominican Republic, and Jamaica. Cruisers seeking active adventure may choose from

an impressive 152 departure dates ranging in length from seven to 56 days. Windstar’s Caribbean and Latin America cruises provide a welcome alternative to travelers who appreciate the region’s stunning beauty. The collection of Sea of Cortez, coastal, canal, and Caribbean Sea voyages emphasizes

hidden harbors on smaller islands and inland coves such as picture perfect Bequia and Mayreau in the Grenadines, and lush Bahia Herradura, Costa Rica. “The beaches, wildlife, and rainforests are a sure draw, but the way we plan and approach itineraries is what sets Windstar apart,”

says Windstar President John Delaney. “We discover the most authentic cultural experiences a destination has to offer so that adventurous, imaginative travelers can come away with a different view and an enhanced understanding of their ports of call.” The cruise line will have

four of their six ships sailing in the regions, dropping anchor in tiny harbors, like Man-O-War Bay in Tobago, with many itineraries offering late-night and overnight port calls that allow guests the time to engage in local cultures in a more immersive way. The cruise that caught my eye is called Adventures in Panama & Costa Rica. If I take this 10-day voyage I will have the opportunity to wiggle my toes in the world-famous, white sand of Playa Flamingo beach, and the black sands of Bahia Herradura. For more information on cruising with Windstar in the Caribbean, Latin America or elsewhere around the globe, call (877) 958-7718, or visit windstarcruises.com.

Cheeseburger Week Returns to Pasadena Restaurants honor Lionel Sternberger’s invention of the cheeseburger in Pasadena in 1924 During Cheeseburger Week from Jan. 6 to Jan. 11, Pasadena honors Lionel Sternberger's genius in being the first to put cheese on a hamburger and serve it at the Rite Spot in Pasadena in 1924. Forty of Pasadena's favorite restaurants, lounges and burger joints offer their signature burgers, some special creations and great deals during Pasadena Cheeseburger Week.

In 1924, as legend has it, teenaged Lionel Sternberger burned one side of a hamburger patty at The Rite Spot, his father’s roadside stand in Pasadena, and rather than throw away the spoiled burger he masked his mistake with a piece of cheese and served it to a very appreciative customer. Sternberger’s achievement is the first verified instance of someone serving a hamburger with cheese.

Over the years, Sternberger perfected his Aristocratic Burger, much to the delight of customers at The Rite Spot. Sternberger’s culinary achievement has been documented by Hamburger America, the Los Angeles Times and even Time magazine in its obituary of Sternberger. Patrons can experience a terrific burger experience, from top-of-the-line fine dining experiences to

burger stands and lounges. Those wanting a variety of experiences can organize a cheeseburger crawl or follow one of the preplanned themed crawls. Information on venues, specials, cheeseburger crawls and more can be found at pasadenarestaurantweek.com. Here is the current list of participants: - 1919 Cafe at the Huntington.

- Cameron’s Seafood. - Central Grille. - Clearman’s Galley. - The Counter. - Del Frisco’s Grille. - Dog Haus (Hill Street location). - Dog Haus Biergarten. - Du-pars. - Edwin Mills by Equator. - El Portal Restaurant. - Foothill. Cheeseburger Week is a

Time to Start on Your New Year’s Resolution Angela COPELAND, angela@copelandcoaching.com

H

appy 2019! I think we can all agree that 2018 was a tricky year, but it’s time to start fresh. It’s time to refocus on an awesome New Year’s resolution: finding a new job. And, it’s the perfect time. Unemployment is at a record low. Jobs are being added. For the first time in a long time, it’s a job seeker’s market. So, let’s get to it. The first place to start is your resume and cover letter. These will be crucial to your job search success. Combine all of your accomplishments into a one or two page document. Go through the details carefully. Review it many times and ask friends to proofread. Then, move on to your LinkedIn profile.

Once you have your materials together, it’s time to run with your search. First and foremost, you have to get into the right mindset. Job searching is a numbers game. You’ve got to start with volume. Set a goal and stick to it. A great goal to start with is 10 job applications per week. You’re not going to hear back from every one. In fact, you may only hear back from 10 percent (or less). Reader Reminds Us of the Importance of Every Day Kindness Dear Editor, Yes, the talented artist Chaka Khan deserves our adulation as the Rose Parade’s Grand Marshal – and who doesn’t covet Queen Louise Deser Siskel’s superior intelligence? The list of celebrities we admire is long indeed. Let’s not forget, however, the unsung heroes who make a difference in our daily lives simply by endowing us with their warm humanity. Today, for instance, while waiting at the curb for the crossing signal light to turn

green, a Monrovia PD female officer called out a sweet “good morning” through the open window of her car and smiled at me. Her mellifluous voice and dazzling smile made my heart flutter. In just a couple of weeks, my 78th birthday will arrive. And as the revered Nicaraguan poet Ruben Dario wrote: “Although my head is gray, I still gaze across the garden’s gate to contemplate a lovely rose.” Well, that friendly officer was the lovely rose I contemplated as I turned my gray head to rest my eyes upon her. - David Q. Ohio State Holds Off Washington to Secure Rose Bowl Victory

A

fairytale ending unfolded on New Year’s Day as the No. 6 Ohio State Buckeyes sent out Head Coach Urban Meyer with a bang by defeating the No. 9 Washington Huskies 28-23 in Pasadena’s renowned Rose Bowl game. Despite not competing for the national title this year, Meyer, who announced in early December he was retiring at the end of the season, was still more than satisfied to cap off his welldecorated career with his first Rose Bowl win.

“I am a very blessed person with my family. I’m very blessed that I’ve had some of the best coaches in college football coach for me, and you look at our rosters over the years, you could say that we have had the best players to have ever played this game and I’m very proud of that,” Meyer said in a postgame interview. The early stages of Tuesday’s “Granddaddy of them all” saw the Buckeyes come out with a full head of steam. Much like how he was the whole season, Ohio

State’s stalwart QB Dwayne Haskins was a man on a mission, spearheading the offense while finishing the game with 251 passing yards and three touchdowns. Haskins was also named MVP of the game. Washington succumbed to Ohio State’s early sucker punch as the Huskies fell behind 28-3 after three quarters of play. However, the Huskies came to life in the final quarter as they notched three touchdowns to cut the Buckeyes’ lead to just five points. It was a worthy effort by

the Pac 12 champions but Washington’s comeback attempt came in vain as its last-ditched onside kick was easily corralled by Ohio State. This put the game on ice and eventually gave the 28-23 win to the Big Ten champion Buckeyes. This win improved Meyer’s all-time Ohio State record to an impressive 83-9 and 12-3 in bowl games. Despite being crowned Rose Bowl champion, the 54-year-old still stands by his decision to retire and said he “doesn’t believe he’s going to coach again.”

Monrovia Wildcats in Good Position for Deep Rio Hondo League Run As league play looms on the horizon, Monrovia girls’ water polo is dialed in for a comeback season as the team looks to erase last year’s fifth-place finish with a title this time around. The Wildcats closed out the preseason on a high note by winning their last two games and putting together a 10-6 overall record. The team is showing promising signs and is focused to ride their momentum all the way through league action. Their last game came in a 13-6 victory over Los Altos on Dec. 20. Senior Isabelle Ngyuen led the offense with five goals while junior Kaitlyn Regan and sophomore Marley Courtney each

laced in a hat trick. On the season, Ngyuen has orchestrated the offense to a tee, recording 29 total assists to go with her 29 total goals. Charlotte Gray leads the team in scoring as she’s tickled the twine 38 times this season. Both goalies have

also seen plenty of action with Phoebe Levengood and Allison Menlove coming up with 96 and 47 total saves, respectively. The Wildcats will host San Marino (6-4 Overall, 0-1 Rio Hondo) in their first league match on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.

The conditions have been chilly and the water even chillier, but Arcadia girls’ water polo is looking to heat things up as it furthers its crusade of winning the Pacific League title. After finishing with a middling 3-3 league record last season, the Apaches will be on a mission this year to capture their first ever league

title. The closest the team ever came was when it finished in second place with a 6-2 record two seasons ago. To open this season, Arcadia took two steps forward and two steps back. The team was off on the right foot as it earned big wins over Mark Keppel and Granada Hills. However, the Apaches hit the waters two weeks later

and fell short to Monrovia 8-4 and Alemany 9-4. Since then, the Apaches have been all over the board and in and out of the win column. Read More at, ArcadiaWeekly.com under Sports
