FIRE ON MONROVIA’S NORUMBEGA QUICKLY SUPPRESSED, SATURDAY Fire’s cause under investigation

Susan MOTANDER motander@yahoo.com

A

brush fire broke out on Saturday night in the 500 block of Norumbega Drive. As with the fire in the Ridgeside/Oakglade area just two days before, firefighters were able to control the blaze before any homes were damaged or destroyed. On Sunday Monrovia Fire Chief Brad Dover attributed the success of the fire fighting effort to three factors. “We have an automatic brush fire response plan in place,” the Chief explained. “There was also a fast response to the incident and we were lucky…there was no wind.” The fire was called in 7:36 according to Chief Dover. Within 10 minutes Incident Commander, Battalion Chief Jeremy Sanchez had called for an additional two alarms. Ultimately Los Angeles County and the Angles National Forest also called in their own alarms.

THE MONROVIA OLD TOWN REPORT Pam FITZPATRICK |

‘Tis the Season in Old Town Monrovia; the streets are decorated, carolers are roaming through town, and the Thursday evening and Sunday afternoon horsedrawn carriage rides are a big hit, as always. But I’m a bit sad: we’ve lost another

two retailers (Empire Bikes in the 600 block of S. Myrtle, and Saga Art Gallery on W. Lime). Sometime in January 2018 Family Affair Music will forever close its doors. Clearly, Amazon and other online retailers are taking a big bite out of little commu-

nity gathering place. This morning, in an attempt to creatively strengthen our retail, I supported a proposal at our monthly MOTAB (Monrovia Old Town Merchants) SEE OLD TOWN PAGE 13
