DA’s Office Releases Public Service Video Highlighting Domestic Violence Month 11-Year old girl named Faith is focus of PSA. They call her Fearless Faith. Those who know the 11-year-old San Bernardino resident and the struggles she endured as a victim of domestic violence immediately point to her courage and willingness to help others. “Faith is such a remarkable young lady whose story of strength and perseverance will no doubt inspire others to break the cycle of domestic violence,” District Attorney Mike Ramos said. “Last week, I had the chance to meet her, and the fact that she wants to be an advocate for other children is something we don’t see very often.” As part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month which takes place every year in October, the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office partnered with San Bernardino-based Option House, Inc. and Project Fighting Chance to release the following Public Service Announcement (PSA) based on Faith’s story: https://youtu.be/AMPHHLAOtc0 The 2-minute PSA highlights Faith’s story of survival and her desire to be an advocate for other children her age who are witness to domestic violence. Activist And Author Bree Newsome To Speak At UC Riverside Newsome, who famously climbed a South Carolina flagpole to remove the Confederate flag, will share her experience as an advocate for racial equality In June 2015, Bree Newsome drew national attention to South Carolina when she scaled a 30-foot flagpole outside the state capitol building and unhooked its Confederate flag as an act of civil disobedience against what she perceived as “racist symbolism.” On Oct. 18, Newsome will speak about the experience and her work as a community organizer and activist during a lecture at the University of

California, Riverside titled “Tearing Hatred From the Sky.” Sponsored by UCR’s Women’s Resource Center, the event will take place at 7 p.m. in Room 302 of the Highlander Union Building (HUB). City Of Long Beach Recruits Volunteers For 10Th Annual Bike Count The City of Long Beach is looking for volunteers to help conduct its Tenth Annual Bike Count, on Thursday, October 19, 2017, from 7:00 am to 9:00 am and 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm, as well as on Sunday, October 22, 2017, from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm. Participants can choose a convenient site from among 25 locations throughout the City. “The City continues to improve our livability initiatives, like those focused on bicycling, because it’s vital that we create more opportunities for residents to safely explore our City,” said Mayor Robert Garcia. “Our aim is to maintain our status as one of the best cities for bicycling in the

nation.” The bike counts play an important role in helping to improve the safety and livability of the City by evaluating the effectiveness of projects, and providing supporting data for grant applications.
