Temple City Sister City Students Down Under BY BRIANNA CHEN AND ANNIKA CHONG On Friday, July 21, we went on our very first excursion as a group to visit Sydney and Manly. Our first destination was Sydney. We took a train to Sydney which took approximately two hours. The city was an unforgettable beautiful sight. Then, we made our way to Manly by taking a ferry. The ferry ride there was incredible— it's passageway was right in between the Sydney Harbor Bridge and the Opera House. Manly had a spectacular beach and many shops where we could buy food or souvenirs. Most of us ate fish and chips for lunch by the beach. The fish and chips were delicious— the fish was super fresh and the portion of it was huge. We took the ferry back and made our way to the Sydney “Centrepoint” Tower, Sydney’s tallest structure. In this tower, we were able to see a 360 view of Sydney from about 1064 feet above the ground. Afterwards, we made our way to Darling Harbor where we ate dinner at a restaurant called Pancakes on the Rocks. We each ate pancakes for dinner, which was very different but fulfilling, and Ian chose to eat a salad instead. We had a great time enjoying our dinner and the night spent together as we talked about our first few days in Australia. It was dark by the time we finished eating and we were able to take one last ferry around Sydney at night. We passed by Luna Park on the ferry ride and we also got to go under the Sydney Harbor Bridge, which was an awesome experience. We arrived back at the train station around 9 PM. All of us were tired by the time we got home and had a great night's sleep to conclude such a fantastic day.

Human Trafficking Conference Held in Riverside Commercial sexual exploitation and human labor trafficking represent two examples of modern day slavery. Offenders have avoided the detection of law enforcement in the past. Human trafficking serves as a new commercial enterprise for criminal street gangs. Unlike drugs or weapons, the trafficking of human flesh involves a reusable and easily renewed resource. The victims are often children. By using the Internet and moving across jurisdictional lines, traffickers attempt to avoid detection. It has been estimated that human trafficking has become a more than $32 billion criminal enterprise

worldwide in which more than 21 million men, women and children in 161 countries are being trafficked for commercial sex or forced labor. The Riverside County District Attorney's Office is committed to aggressive prosecution of traffickers. As a key member of the Riverside Anti-Human Trafficking Task Force (RCAHT) -- one of nine such regional task forces statewide -- the District Attorney’s Office engages in the prosecution of offenders, training of law enforcement partners, building community awareness, and seeking legislative change to strengthen the laws against traffickers. On July 19, 2013, the

DA's Office hosted, at the downtown Riverside office, a Human Trafficking Prosecution Conference which focused on the best practices in attacking human labor and sex trafficking. Presented in cooperation with the United States Attorney's Office, the conference brought together more than 150 law enforcement officials, state and federal prosecutors, victim advocates and other first responders. The presentations also included hearing from two human trafficking survivors. A keynote talk on the current state of human trafficking prosecution was given by Andre Birotte Jr., the U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California.
