Riverside Hopes to Encourage More Local Graduates to Live and Work in the City

Roughly 70 percent of graduates in the region elect to stay local after they graduate, which helps spur innovation and drive economic development in the local economy. Cities that keep their college graduates also have higher levels of wealth and affluence, studies show.

The City of Riverside partners with our four colleges and universities – UC Riverside, California Baptist University, La Sierra University and Riverside City College – and the Greater Riverside Chambers of Commerce to create mentorship programs, job fairs and other outreach efforts to attract local college students to the workforce. Man Sentenced for Killing Girlfriend in Monrovia A 52-year-old man was sentenced to 46 years to life in state prison for the domestic violence murder of his girlfriend, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced. On May 12, a jury found Joel Velazquez of Valinda, guilty of one count of voluntary manslaughter. Case GA094662 was prosecuted by Deputy District Attor-

ney Lisa Tanner. The victim, identified on the complaint as Alice Marie M., was strangled by Velasquez on Sept. 21, 2014. Her body was later discovered inside an SUV parked behind a house owned by her parents on the 200 block of Mauna Loa Drive in Monrovia, prosecutors said. The case was investigated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Homicide Division.
