Arcadia Teen Died From Gunshot Wound Another Teenager Dead after Gunfire Erupts Sunday Morning

A

n Arcadia teen died following a shooting in a residential neighborhood between Monrovia and Duarte early Sunday, according to a written report from LASD. Gabriel Shea Carlos died at approximately 1:40 a.m. after the shooting that occurred at the 400 block of Shrode Avenue, an unincorporated area of Duarte/Monrovia. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau detectives are continuing their investigation into the shooting death of Carlos and actively following up on witness accounts for the shooting, and the two men who allegedly ran away from the scene. Detectives said Temple Station deputies responded to a “shots fired” call at the location. Upon their arrival, they found a male, Hispanic juvenile unconscious and suffering from at least one gunshot wound to the upper body. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. While the Sherriff’s dept. is saying the shooting is not gang related, some friends Monday at the small memorial where Carlos died said there was “going to be more trouble …” According to one report, friends of Carlos seem to think they know who killed him but won’t talk out of fear. One mourner who wished to remain anonymous told Monrovia Weekly “this is a very dangerous area with at least two gangs, Gabriel was definitely not a gang member … he was very kind and friendly.

City of Long Beach Wins Alleged Discrimination Case On May 23, 2017, a Superior Court judge rejected a claim by a parking enforcement officer that her termination from the City of Long Beach was motivated by her race. The plaintiff, Dieanna Hollie, was employed by the City for ten years as a parttime, unclassified Parking Control Checker. Her primary job was to follow the City street sweeper and to issue citations to vehicles improperly parked on City streets during street sweeping hours. Within a two-week time period, Hollie was involved in two separate rear end automobile accidents. Hollie’s manager concluded that Hollie was at fault for both accidents. After the second accident, the City terminated Hollie. Following her termination, Hollie filed a lawsuit against the City, and her supervisor, alleging that she was actually terminated because of her race. In the lawsuit, Hollie claims that her supervisor harbored discriminatory animus against African American City employees. The City viewed Hollie’s claim as lacking any merit and brought a pretrial motion for judgment in its favor. The City argued that Hollie’s termination was based on legitimate, business reasons - the automobile accidents. The City also argued that Hollie SEE PAGE 4

San Bernardino Man Sentenced to 185 Years to Life in State Prison for Human Trafficking

A San Bernardino man was sentenced to 185 years to life in state prison for human trafficking. A jury found 29-yearold Demetrius Manning, of San Bernardino, guilty in May 2015 of human trafficking, rape, false imprisonment, criminal threats, felony assault and kidnap for rape. According to Lead Deputy District Attorney Melissa Rodriguez, who prosecuted the case, Manning had met the 23-yearold victim and lured her in

by telling her that he could help her with her music career. “When she got to his residence she realized that he didn’t have any interest in helping her with her music but forced himself on her, raping her and forcing her to perform other sex acts,” said Rodriguez, who is the lead prosecutor of the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Human Trafficking Prosecution Unit. During the incident, Manning told the victim that he was going to make

her work as a prostitute under the name “Treasure” and that she would turn all of the money over to him. “Thanks to the great work of the San Bernardino Police Department and our Human Trafficking Prosecution Unit, we took another trafficker off the streets,” District Attorney Mike Ramos said. “We will continue working collaboratively with all of our law enforcement partners to prevent future victims and combat human trafficking in this region.”

How to Sell High: Avoid these Three Mistakes When Selling Your Home

Alhambra - When you decide to sell your home, setting your optimal asking price is one of the most important decisions you will ever make. Price is often the first thing a prospective buyer sees, and many homes are passed over as “not in our price range” before the home even has a chance of being shown. Your asking price is often your home’s “first impression,” and if you want to realize the most money you can for your home, it’s imperative that you make an excellent first impression. This is not as easy as it sounds,

and pricing strategy should not be taken lightly. Pricing too high can be as costly to a homeseller as pricing too low. Comparing against what other homes in your neighborhood have sold for is only a small part of the process, and by itself is not nearly enough to help you make the best decision. A recently study, which compiles 10 years of industry research, has resulted in a new special report entitled “Homesellers: How to Get the Price You Want (and Need).” This report will help you understand pricing strategy from three different angles. ance to convene U.S. states committed to achieving the U.S. goal of reducing emissions 26-28 percent from 2005 levels and meeting or exceeding the targets of the federal Clean Power Plan. With input from all participants, the U.S. Climate Alliance will also act as a forum to sustain and strengthen existing climate programs, promote the sharing of information and best practices and implement new programs to reduce carbon emissions from all sectors of the economy. “The President has already said climate change is a hoax, which is the exact opposite of virtually all scientific and worldwide opinion,” said Governor Brown. “I don't believe fighting reality is a good strategy – not for America, not for anybody. If the President is going to be AWOL in this profoundly important human endeavor, then California and other states will step up.” “As the federal government turns its back on the environment, New York and states across the country are picking up the mantle of climate leadership and showing the world it’s possible to address climate change while also creating good-paying careers,” said Governor Cuomo. “The U.S. Climate Alliance is committed to meeting the standards set forth in the Paris Accord regardless of Washington’s irresponsible actions. We welcome these 10 new members and look forward to collaborating and maintaining the momentum in the global effort to protect our planet, while jumpstarting the clean energy economy.” “Those of us who understand science and feel the urgency of protecting our children's air and water are as united as ever in confronting one of the greatest challenges of our lifetime,” said Governor Inslee. “Our collective efforts to act on climate will

ensure we maintain the U.S.'s commitment to curb carbon pollution while advancing a clean energy economy that will bring good-paying jobs to America's workers.” “Connecticut has been a national leader in combating climate change and we have no plans of slowing down our efforts,” said Connecticut Governor Dannel P. Malloy. “In the absence of leadership from the White House in addressing climate change, it is incumbent upon the states to take action in order to protect their residents. We remain committed to meeting the standards set forth in the Paris Climate Agreement because it is the right thing to do for not only the future of our state, but for the future of our planet. I am proud to stand with my fellow governors in support of efforts to reverse the harmful effects of global warming and to send a message to the rest of the world that we accept the science of climate change and we will not let the misguided beliefs of a few ruin our planet.” “Delaware is the country’s lowest-lying state and with 381 miles of coastline, climate change is a very real threat to our future,” said Delaware Governor John Carney. “As sea levels rise, more than 17,000. Rising average temperatures and an increase in extreme weather events also pose health risks to Delawareans, and threaten our economy. The U.S. should lead in the global fight against climate change. Delaware is proud to join this coalition of states providing that necessary leadership.” “As the Commonwealth reiterates its commitment to exceed the emission reduction targets of the Paris Climate Agreement, today we join the U.S. Climate Alliance to expand on our efforts while partnering with other states to combat climate change,” said Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker. “Af-

ter speaking with Governors Cuomo and Scott, our administration looks forward to continued, bipartisan collaboration with other states to protect the environment, grow the economy and deliver a brighter future to the next generation.” “I am very pleased to announce that Minnesota will join the U.S. Climate Alliance, to uphold the tenets of the Paris Climate Change Agreement in our state,” said Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton. “President Trump’s withdrawal will cause serious damage to our environment and our economy. Nevertheless, Minnesota and other states will show the world what we can achieve by working together to conserve energy, to use cleaner and renewable energy, and to leave a livable planet to our children and grandchildren.” “The ‘America First’ doctrine should put our children first too,” said Oregon Governor Kate Brown. “Future generations deserve to inherit a world they can thrive in, not one that plays politics and ignores the fact our climate is changing. Despite the decision by the White House to retreat, it is our moral obligation to fulfill the goals of the Paris Agreement. Oregon will continue to make meaningful strides, with the rest of the world, to ensure our communities and economies adapt to meet the challenge of climate change.” “Climate change is a real problem for all and requires immediate action to ensure future generations are left with a sustainable planet,” said Puerto Rico Governor Ricardo Rosselló. “Our administration is committed to protecting the environment. As a Governor, who is also a scientist, I value science and data as primary tools in the decision making process. As such, I strongly oppose the withdrawal from SEE PAGE 9

The editor of a newspaper that covers the Sunland/ Tujunga area has been sentenced to 41 months in federal prison for illegally possessing firearms. David “Doc” DeMulle, 75, of Tujunga, the editor-inchief of The Foothills Paper, was sentenced on Monday by United States District Judge Otis D. Wright III. DeMulle pleaded guilty in 2016 to being a convicted felon in possession of firearms. When he imposed the sentence earlier this week, Judge Wright found that DeMulle possessed 25 firearms and hundreds of pounds of ammunition that he was forbidden to possess because of convictions for perjury and welfare fraud in 1990. This matter came to the attention of the firearms trafficking unit of the Los Angeles Police Department and ATF agents when DeMulle published an advertisement in his paper concerning “Guns for Haiti Quake Relief.” The ad solicited donations of firearms, which DeMulle then purportedly would sell, using the proceeds to support earthquake relief efforts in Haiti. Undercover LAPD officers responded to the advertisement and delivered two firearms to DeMulle, who illegally accepted them. Subsequent searches of DeMulle’s home and business

On Friday, June 2, 2017, at approximately 11:00 AM, Riverside Police and Fire responded to a report of single vehicle traffic collision on Olivewood Ave. south of Cridge St. Witnesses stated a 1998 Acura Integra, which was being driven by a 19 year-old male resident of Mentone, was north on Olivewood Ave at a high rate of speed. It appeared the vehicle may have been racing another vehicle, which was described as a dark, late model Honda coupe. As the vehicles weaved in and around traffic, the SEE PAGE 8

led authorities to recover 23 additional firearms, as well as hundreds of pounds (not rounds) of ammunition. The investigation also revealed that DeMulle had previously placed classified ads in The Foothills Paper soliciting firearms, which resulted in him purchasing sev-

eral firearms from a private citizen while falsely claiming that he possessed a federal firearms dealer’s license and would handle the firearms transfer paperwork. The case against DeMulle was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives

(ATF) and the Los Angeles Police Department. This case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Gregory Lesser of the Violent and Organized Crime Section.

Hiker Rescued By Police Helicopter On Friday, May 26, 2017, at about 10:40 a.m., the Riverside Police Department’s Emergency Dispatch Center received calls of a person possibly stranded needing assistance on Sugarloaf Mountain. This mountain is near the University neighborhood behind the University of California, Riverside campus. The Air Support Unit (AIR-1) quickly responded to the mountain to conduct a search. The caller could not see the subject but felt they may be in trouble because they were yelling for help and loudly whistling. AIR-1 arrived and located a subject hiking on the mountain that was signaling to them. Because of this person’s remote location, AIR-1 landed on a ridgeline to contact him. Once on the ground, the aircrew discovered this person was actually one of the callers. He pointed up the mountain in the direction he heard a female calling for help. AIR-1 was able to locate a young adult female hiker about three-fourths of the way up the mountain on the side of a large rock. They used their loudspeaker to determine if she could hike up to the top where they could pick her up, but she indicated she could not hike anymore. Police Pilot

Jeff Ratkovich was able to land on this large rock with only one skid, which allowed his partner, Sergeant Erik Lindgren, to get out and assist the hiker. The aircrew determined the hiker was not injured but unable to make it down on her own. Sgt. Lindgren led the hiker to a better landing zone but still required Pilot Ratkovich to perform a one-skid landing on the mountain. Carefully, the hiker was loaded into the back seat of the helicopter and flown down to the east end of Marlborough Avenue where the Riverside Fire Department

was already staged to evaluate the patient. It was determined the young hiker climbed up the mountain when she became tired and disoriented, then was unable to find her way off the steep side where she was later found. The City of Riverside has many beautiful places to hike and explore. This incident serves as a reminder to make sure you are prepared with appropriate clothing, hydration, communication device, and the necessary physical fitness needed for whatever local venture you choose to take.

Local Seniors Support Wounded Veterans With Simple Gesture When Joan McGee discovered the young veteran speaking at her Bradbury senior living community had lost his arm in Afghanistan, and subsequently spent part of his recovery in Germany, she was eager to find out if he had received a handmade pillow. As it turned out, the soldier not only had received a pillow, but, to McGee’s delight, was still using it. For nearly two years, McGee and about 10 other residents at Royal Oaks have

carefully assembled pillows by hand and shipped them to the chaplain at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany as part of the Wounded Warrior Project. The pillows, beset with a Marine, Air Force or Army motif, provide a measure of comfort to serving men and women significantly injured overseas. After hearing about the idea at a local church, McGee decided to introduce the program at Royal Oaks. McGee purchases materials and supplies

from a local fabric store, and the group then assembles each pillow by hand, preparing a dozen pillows every three months. While McGee acknowledges they’re limited in what they can do for these soldiers, residents find great satisfaction in knowing their efforts remind soldiers how much their sacrifice is appreciated. There may also be unforeseen benefits from their efforts, as studies have shown volunteerism can lead to a number of mental and physical health benefits.

the Paris Agreement. Our administration understands that all policy decisions even those perceived to being small can have big, lasting effects on our planet. Puerto Rico, an Island that 3.4 million American Citizens call home, would suffer greatly from the devastating effects of rising sea levels. But we all stand to lose if we don't take meaningful action right now. We call upon all public officials across our nation to continue to support rules and regulations that protect our environment. As most of the world move forwards, our nation cannot sit idle and lag behind.” “President Trump's decision to withdraw from the Paris Agreement was a tremendous mistake. Rhode Island may be a small state, but climate change can have a big impact on our communities,” said Rhode Island Governor Gina M. Raimondo. “We are determined to fight climate change from the front lines so that we can preserve our environment - including our Narragansett Bay - for future generations and create goodpaying, future-proof jobs in

the process. I'm proud to join Governors Cuomo, Brown and Inslee in this effort and hope other governors - from both parties - join as well.” “Growing our economy and protecting our environment by supporting cleaner and more affordable energy and transportation choices can go together,” said Vermont Governor Phil Scott. “If our national government isn’t willing to lead in this area, the states are prepared to step up and lead. I look forward to supporting continued bipartisan cooperation on these matters and thank Governor Baker, Governor Inslee, Governor Cuomo and Governor Brown for working collaboratively on this important issue.” “As the first state in the Trump era to take executive action to limit carbon emissions and create clean energy jobs, Virginia is proud to join the Climate Alliance,” said Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe. “President Trump's announcement to withdraw the United States from the Paris Climate Agreement does not speak for the states and cities that

are committed to fighting climate change and paving the way for a new energy economy. If the federal government insists on abdicating leadership on this issue, it will be up to the American people to step forward – and in Virginia we are doing just that.” California's Leadership on Climate Change The U.S. Climate Alliance complements the Under2 Coalition – an international pact among cities, states and countries to limit the increase in global average temperature to below 2 degrees Celsius, the level of potentially catastrophic consequences – formed in 2015 by California and BadenWürttemberg, Germany in the lead up to COP21. Building on the global momentum to combat climate change and continuing California's leading role in broadening collaboration amongst subnational leaders, Governor Brown is in China this week to strengthen California's long-standing climate and clean energy ties with the nation. The Governor's trip to China includes

agreements to expand cooperation on low-carbon technologies and clean energy development with Sichuan and Jiangsu, the first Chinese provinces to join the Under2 Coalition. Last week, Governor Brown issued a statement reaffirming California's ongoing commitment to aggressive action on climate change and last month called on the administration to keep the United States in the Paris Climate Agreement. The Governor will attend the 2017 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP23) in Bonn, Germany to represent subnational jurisdictions that remain committed to climate action. California, the sixthlargest economy in the world, has advanced its nation-leading climate goals while also growing the economy. In the last seven years, California has created 2.3 million new jobs - outpacing most of the United States - cut its unemployment rate in half, eliminated a $27 billion budget deficit and has seen its credit rating rise to the highest level in more than a decade.

In March, Governor Brown reaffirmed California's commitment to exceed the targets of the Clean Power Plan and the state's efforts to curb carbon pollution, which include establishing the most ambitious greenhouse gas emission reduction targets in North America and the nation's toughest restrictions on destructive super pollutants. The Governor has also signed legislation that directs cap-and-trade funds to greenhouse gas reducing programs which benefit disadvantaged communities, support clean transportation and protect natural ecosystems. This action builds on landmark legislation the Governor signed in October 2015 to generate half of the state's electricity from renewable sources by 2030 and double the rate of energy efficiency savings in California buildings. Governor Brown has also committed to reducing today's petroleum use in cars and trucks by up to 50 percent within the next 15 years; make heating fuels cleaner; and manage farm and rangelands, forests and

wetlands so they can store carbon. The Governor has traveled to the United Nations headquarters in New York, the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris, the Vatican in Italy and the Climate Summit of the Americas in Toronto, Canada to call on other leaders to join California in the fight against climate change. These efforts build on a number of other international climate change agreements with leaders from the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Mexico, China, North America, Japan, Israel, Peru, Chile, Australia, Scotland and Sweden and Governor Brown's efforts to gather hundreds of world-renowned researchers and scientists around a groundbreaking call to action – called the consensus statement – which translates key scientific climate findings from disparate fields into one unified document. The impacts of climate change are already being felt in California and will disproportionately impact the state's most vulnerable populations.

* An independent clinical study in the US has shown that primax provided a significant improvement in ease of listening in demanding listening environments. A newly developed methodology using objective brain behavior measures (Electroencephalographic data), showed a significant reduction in listening effort for mild to moderate hearing impaired subjects using primax hearing aids in speech-in-noise situations applying advanced features such as Narrow Focus and EchoShield. ** Two clinical studies have shown that binax provides better than normal hearing in certain demanding environments (University of Northern Colorado, 2014; Oldenburg Hörzentrum, 2013): Speech Reception Thresholds (SRT) in cocktail-party situations improved up to 2.9 dB for wearers with mild to moderate hearing loss using Carat binax or Pure binax hearing aids with narrow directionality, compared to people with normal hearing.
