Summertime and the Living Is Easy Especially if you find the right camp for your kids By Terry Miller
There’s a plethora of summer camps vying for your attention this year and in this issue we hope to give a little attention to some of those camps that are available locally and those that offer unique programs to not only have fun for your children but also perhaps enlighten them, albeit without them knowing they’re learning something new and exciting. There are church organizations which offer a balance between academics and fun and then there are Educational Foundations devoted to preparing students for the new school year and aquire college/career skills. Additionally there are numerous private and public schools which offer unique activities for 5-6 weeks on average that offer academic, developmental, and creative workshops. Some camps offer unique traveling experiences combining classroom education with fun, exciting and exceptional activities allowing students to enjoy their summer while exploring new opportunities in and out of the classroom. These include some classes that earn credits for graduation and to explore and enhance one’s knowledge of Southern California and Northern Arizona’s rich artistic, cultural, and historical wonders. In this special section we hope you’ll peruse and inwardly digest what many of our advertisers are offering to enhance your child’s experience but also give you piece of mind that while they are having fun, a structured nurturing summer lies ahead for those able to attend any one of these exciting camps/programs this summer. Have a safe and happy summer from all of us at Beacon Media.

Centre Stage
S
ummer theatre camps abound, but one look into a Centre Stage Production, and it is clear: this youth camp defies genre. Youthful and exciting, but professional and focused, this summer, give Centre Stage a try, with one of our two shows. For younger performers, ages 5-12, get your spirit gear polished up for High School Musical. Run daily, Monday through Friday, 9-3, this camp is for new and experienced youth. No audition
necessary. Camp dates are July 10-29. The junior and senior camp is a more challenging experience, with traditional auditions and rehearsal times. For ages 13-21 with singing and dancing experience, the Into The Woods session might be more your speed. There are no magic beans or fairy tales: this one is more work, but the rewards are golden. Auditions are June 3rd. Check out centrestageinc.com for details for camp info, tuition, and contact info.

usion Academy Pasadena is a revolutionary, accredited private middle and high school where positive relationships unlock academic potential. All classes are one-to-one: one student and one teacher per classroom. This allows for a completely customized learning experience. Teachers personalize curriculum to students’ individual strengths, interests, and learning styles, students are able to enroll at any time, and take classes at a pace that works for them. We offer the choice to be a full-time student, take classes for credit, or utilize our tutoring services, even during the summer. Our campus has a state-of-the-art recording studio and a mixed-media art studio where students can explore their creativity. With one-toone classes, students can pursue whatever artistic dreams they have. Teachers also act as mentors to en-
courage and challenge students to flourish in their passions. From math to yoga and everything in between, students can choose classes to create the education that works for them. We have over 250 classes to choose from, all which meet state standard and many are UC approved. Homework doesn’t go home, but is completed in the Homework Café® before students leave for the day with help and supervision from a teacher. While it’s impossible to put our students into categories, we generally serve students with the following backgrounds: ADHD, accelerated/gifted learners, dyslexia, mild learning differences, social challenges, school anxiety, or students with challenging schedules. Students who attend Fusion have one thing in common: traditional school isn’t working.

Kids will be able to treat their family to some amazing Chocolate delights like a Chocolate Decadence Cake that requires almost 1 pound of chocolate to make, Chocolate Truffle making with classic French Ganache and a great holiday gift basket with great ideas and techniques for children to create next holiday season. Titles such as Disney Park Dining will feature a week of menus highlighting recipes from Disneyland including; The Rueben from the Blue Bayou restaurant, Lobster Nachos from the Cove Bar in Cailfornia Adventure and Remy;s Famous Ratatouille from New Orleans square. “This is a great class for kids use their imagination while making delicious food,” stated Chef Allen. “We also offer a two classes that go on a Worldwide culinary journey called the International Gourmet I &II,” continued Chef Allen. This week’s classes will feature menus from Italy, Mexico, Japan, Asia, and France. “Cooking Camp has always taken pride in the fact that we don’t “dumb down” our teaching to the Children. If we make Pizza at Cooking Camp, they learn the entire process from feeding the yeast, kneading dough and making a proper Pizza sauce. We have never just give a child PopNFresh dough and tomato sauce and call it Pizza,” lamented Chef Allen. Another great week for a young Baker would be Baker’s Delight I & II, which features both sweet and savory baking recipes. Chef Allen said, “We have responded to the requests of many past campers to do 2 entire weeks of baking.” The Cooking Camp is now heading into their 13th year serving the greater San Gabriel Valley area teaching kids of all ages the hands on tricks of the trade by Le Cordon Bleu trained Chef Instructors.
