Youth Camp at Centre Stage Summer theatre camps abound, but one look into a Centre Stage Production, and it is clear: this youth camp defies genre, youthful and exciting, but professional and focused. This summer, give Centre Stage a try, with one of our two shows. For younger performers, ages 5-12, get your spirit gear polished up for High School Musical. Monday through Friday, 9a.m. – 3 p.m., this camp is for new and experienced youth. No audition necessary. Camp dates are

July 10 - 29. The junior and senior camp is a more challenging experience, with traditional auditions and rehearsal times. For ages 13 - 21 with singing and dancing experience, the Into the Woods session might be more your speed. There are no magic beans or fairy tales: this one is more work, but the rewards are golden. Auditions are June 3. Check out centrestageinc.com for details for camp info, tuition, and contact info.

The Sundays with Coleman Concerts The Sundays with Coleman chamber music concerts will embark upon its 114th season in 2017 - 2018. These concerts sponsored by the Coleman Chamber Music Association began in 1904 through the efforts of Alice Coleman, a gifted pianist living in Pasadena. Local chamber musicians performed the early concerts in private homes. When the Coleman Concerts moved to the Pasadena Playhouse in 1927, the series evolved to present the finest chamber ensembles from throughout the United States and Europe. The Coleman concerts, a Sunday afternoon six-concert series, have been in Beckman Auditorium on the campus of the California Institute of Technology since 1965. The 2017 - 18 season welcomes the brilliant young talent of the Heath Quartet touring from the UK and celebrates the

return of the Juilliard String Quartet for its 21st appearance on the Coleman series. In the course of the season, the St. Lawrence String Quartet will present works by Haydn, Janacek and Tchaikovsky. The Schubert Ensemble will perform diverse repertoire for piano and strings and the celebrated Jerusalem Quartet returns to Coleman in March, 2018. This exciting season will conclude with a special treat in the performance of the Brentano Quartet with Dawn Upshaw, soprano. For concert dates, additional information and to purchase tickets, please call the Coleman office at (626)7934191 or email at krfccma@aol.com. All concerts are on Sunday afternoons at 3:30 p.m.

The Ice House

As a kid, I always liked comedy and would listen to albums by George Carlin, Bob Newhart, Bill Cosby, and Lenny Bruce. Despite my enjoyment of these great talents, I decided to pursue an unfunny career and left Los Angeles for San Francisco State College to be a lawyer. When that did not hold my attention, I switched majors and ended up getting a Bachelor of Art Degree in Communications. Out of college and short on money, I went to work as a marketing person for IBM. One of my early management experiences was when I wore a blue shirt with my suit to work. I was then taken aside and advised that my renegade shirt choice could hurt my future promotion opportunities. Five years later, I left IBM and got a call that would change my life. An old college buddy wanted to know if I would open and manage a new comedy club for him ... The Laff Stop in Newport Beach, California. The opening act was a new guy named Robin Williams who was paid $100 for the week. I managed the club for two years and The Laff Stop

enjoyed huge success. It was also hard work. I gave notice and planned to move back to San Francisco to get into real estate. Then another old friend called and said that The Ice House in Pasadena was for sale. The year was 1978. Did I want to buy it? Not really. I found the night club business very demanding. But I took a look at the club and said, “Let’s take a chance.” I planned to be there for one year. Here I am 35 years later. Most of the time, I love what I do. The main job of figuring out how to get 7,000 customers a month into the club is not easy. It starts with putting on great shows. I have had the good fortune of working with new talent, giving them a venue where they grow, then seeing them headline. Every day is different and never boring, but it’s the people who keep me coming back. Have you ever had a moment that changed your life forever, in a good way? I’m Bob Fisher and thanks for letting me share my story on Comedy in The House.

The Pasadena Playhouse Presents Two Inspiring Productions

This spring, The Pasadena Playhouse is opening dialogue about American identity and democracy with two equally timely, inspiring and intellectually stimulating productions. The Originalist follows a bright, liberal law school graduate who embarks on a nerve-wracking clerkship with Justice Antonin Scalia, and discovers him to be both an infuriating sparring partner and an unexpected mentor. As the country waits for Scalia’s seat to be filled, The Originalist looks into the complexities of one of the most polarizing Supreme Court Justices of all time. This powerful work portrays the passionate people risking heart and soul to defend their interpretation of the truth, and the constitution.

Based on a true story, Hold These Truths is a shockingly relevant cautionary tale of the injustices perpetrated when nationalism, fear and hysteria collide. 75 years ago, an executive order called for American citizens to be ripped from their homes and forced into internment camps, detained solely based on their heritage and ancestry. Amid the chaos, one young student stands up for what he passionately believes is right in the face of a country deeply divided between national security and freedom for all. The Pasadena Playhouse, celebrating its centennial this year, is located at 39 S. El Molino Ave., Pasadena, CA 91101. Visit www. pasadenaplayhouse.org for more information or call (626)356-7529.
