Council Approves Plans for Pavement Rehabilitation Project

COMPLIMENTARY COPY VOLUME 20, NO. 32

BY JANETTE MARQUEZ On Aug. 2, city council approved plans for a pavement rehabilitation project, set for this upcoming fall, which allows the Pavement Management Program (PMP) to resurface the city streets. The $1.5 million project is expected to resurface over 11 miles of the city’s streets. The city wants to improve and repair the streets, in an attempt to make it easier for residents to drive. Many residents question why certain streets have been selected to be repaired and others have not. The pavement management program does not decide – the city’s engineers make the determination, based on street observations and information provided to the PMP. However, the city’s decisions also come from reducing the cost from other projects, plans, and minimizing the amount of noise to the community. PMP wants to maintain decent streets and sidewalks, positively impacting the city and the community. Some Temple City streets have been recently resurfaced, however other streets need resurfacing. Temple City resident Maria Aguilar states, “I feel that resurfacing the streets will be beneficial for drivers, because it would prevent the tires from wearing out from the potholes of the streets.” Resurfacing streets can be expensive, depending on the condition of the street. According to the PMP, the project is estimated to “cost about $24.1 million to resurface all the streets in the city at one time to an overall condition of excellent.” There are different ranges of pavement conditions, which range from excellent to failed, and the SEE PAGE 12

dents and property owners that are at risk of being impacted from the Fish Fire mud and debris flow from upcoming storms. With the recent damage to Duarte’s hillsides, the city must prepare for severe flooding and SEE PAGE 12

As everyone who knows me can attest I am a huge believer in modern advances in denDr. Canzoneri tistry. One of the advances that I employ in my office is the ability of specific lasers to treat various aspects of periodontal disease. According to the Academy of Periodontology 47.2% of the people in the United States have gum disease. That’s approximately 64.7 million adults 30 years and older! I’m sure you have noticed people with gum disease. You are talking to someone at the market, a little league game etc.; and you have to stand back due to the awful smell of their breath. It’s sad that many of these people don’t even realize that they have a disease in their mouth. Many times the treatment for gum disease has been “gum sur-

gery” which involves scalpels, sutures and extended post-operative discomfort. Thanks to a very specific type of minimally invasive dental laser gum disease can be treated without a scalpel, without stitches and dramatically reduced post-operative pain. The Waterlase YSGG dental laser has been approved by the FDA to remove diseased gum tissue and calculus below the gum line. In our office a patient undergoes a thorough examination, a consultation followed by scaling and root cleaning by a highly qualified hygienist and a reevaluation after 3 months. If gum disease is still present a non-invasive Laser Surgery (using the BIOLASE Waterlase Laser) will be discussed with the patient. Laser dentistry has dramatically reduced patients fear and anxiety, minimized post-operative discomfort and improved the healing potential of the body.

Metro and LA2024 Host Gold Medalists From the Past Appearances Show Rider Appreciation and Boost City’s Bid for 2024 Games With the opening ceremony for the Olympic Games Rio 2016 on Friday, Aug. 5, the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) and the Los Angeles 2024 Olympic Candidature Committee (LA2024) announced their own celebration of Los Angeles’ Olympic history, by honoring local gold medalists from the past at transit stations throughout the Metro system. On weekdays during the Rio Games (Aug. 5 to 19), Metro riders can meet and greet Olympic champions, see genuine gold medals, have their photograph taken with the champions, and receive autographs. Los Angeles has been an Olympic city twice: in 1932 and 1984. Los Angeles is currently vying to be the host city of the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and transportation infrastructure is an important factor that Inter-

national Olympic Committee (IOC) members will consider when deciding where to host the Games. “Since the last time our region hosted an Olympiad, LA County has built 105 miles of modern, efficient rail transit, with expansions underway that will connect to LAX and Westwood,” said Metro Chair John Fasana. “Add to that substantial highway improvements completed and under construction and LA has a lot to offer the IOC.” “If the Olympic movement were to build a city on the ideals of equality, diversity, and cooperation, that city would be Los Angeles,” said LA Mayor and Metro Board First Vice Chair Eric Garcetti. “These champions embody that spirit - and their presence, along with the historic improvements we are making to our transit system, sends a message to the world that we are more than ready

Pasadena Homeless Count Officially Exceeds 500 How many people are currently homeless in Pasadena? How many of them are families, youth, or veterans? The answers to these questions and more were answered by Pasadena Partnership “point-in-time counts.” This count, called the Homeless Count & Subpopulation Survey, provides a snapshot of homelessness in our community on one day. The count included people who are both temporarily sheltered (e.g. emergency

shelters and transitional housing) and unsheltered. Point-in-time counts establish the dimensions of the problem of homelessness in our community and help authorities to plan services and programs to appropriately address local needs. The 2016 Homeless Count was conducted on Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2016 and found 530 homeless persons in the City of Pasadena. This year’s count showed a 56 percent decrease in homelessness since 2011.

GROUND BREAKING FORECLOSURE RULING! The California Supreme Court ruled on February 18, 2016 that a homeowner has the right to challenge his lender's authority to foreclose based upon void assignments of the loan to third parties. The high court expressly upheld an earlier California Appellate opinion called Glaski v Bank of America. This decision could set aside many foreclosures and/or obtain monetary damages, settle lawsuits with modifications and prevent foreclosures from happening in the first place. This decision will hopefully provide our firm with even more legal leverage to not only set aside many foreclosures and /or obtain money damages, but settle lawsuits with modifications and prevent foreclosures from happening in the first place. Good. SeaWorld is despicable. They will never get my family’s business ever again after I saw the film “Blackfish.” Never again. - Marilyn Via PasadenaIndependent.com In reply to Marilyn I concur, Marylin. SeaWorld is outdated, cruel, and continues the appalling practice of cetacean captivity, which anyone with

a heart and brain knows is wrong. They’re sinking quickly since the public doesn’t want to see huge intelligent MARINE mammals stuck in minuscule barren pools located on dry land. Those incredibly smart, familybonded and emotionally advanced animals should be in seaside sanctuaries, not performing ridiculous circus tricks for mouthbreathing, knuckle-dragging low-IQ SeaWorld supporters who want to pay to keep SeaWorld’s animal circus around. Although we can count our blessings that our laws forbid bullfighting, cockfighting, and other remnants of ancient savagery, we still have a long way to go before animal cruelty becomes a thing of the past. Dear Editor: Our group of four attended the latest Sierra Madre Concert in the Park on Aug. 7 and, as always, thoroughly enjoyed Harry Shahoian’s excellent musical tribute to the late, great Elvis. Our evening was marred however by the rude and boorish behavior of two ladies who apparently arrived a few minutes before the concert and proceeded to neatly fold and set aside my group’s previously arranged two blankets and occupy our space with their own chairs, leaving no room at all for our group. When questioned, they offered several specious excuses for their actions, which were so silly that I won’t bother to list them here. By 6 p.m., the green was pretty fully occupied, but thanks to some kind people who rearranged their own chairs to make room for us (thank you!), we found another location in which to set up our own chairs. The Shahoian concert is

Smitten on Paper story and photos By Gus Herrera

S

mitten on Paper’s team of designers have been transforming their client’s dreams and inspirations into beautiful custom stationery for more than a decade. Although they specialize in wedding invitations, the business is capable of satisfying all of a bride’s custom needs throughout the entire process of their special day: from programs and menus, all the way to thank you cards. Smitten on Paper’s custom stationery allows brides the opportunity to take the mystery out of one step of the overall, ever-complicated wedding-planning process, by working closely to

ensure they get exactly what they envision. Moreover, in lieu of their fairly recent move/expansion, Smitten on Paper is now also Monrovia’s newest one-stop shop for stationery, where you can find everything from greeting cards and notepads, to highquality, imported calligraphy tools. Eighteen months ago, Theresa Kuo, founder, jumped on the opportunity to evolve Smitten on Paper from a strictly-online business, operating out of a Pasadena office, into a self-sufficient retail and production operation, housed within Old Town Monrovia’s “Historic Lighting” building. Kuo reveals that she had been eyeing Monrovia, specifically the dreamy, open-

spaced brick structure on Lemon that used to belong to Historic Lighting Inc., “We really loved this particular building and we actually needed the space. I used to think, ‘wouldn’t it be great to work in this building one day’ and then it just happened to be available … ” Smitten on Paper’s move to Monrovia not only afforded the business muchneeded space for their means of production (i.e. printing presses, supplies, etc.), it also enabled Kuo to expand her brand via retail sales and community workshops. Whereas the business used to be limited to online interactions, Smitten on Paper’s brick-and-mortar location provides the designers a sanctuary in which to

The Down Payment Myth Stumping First-Time Homebuyers By Dave Liniger Even though the economy is in a slow-motion recovery, the real estate market is moving at full speed. Existing home sales in May ran more than 5 percent ahead of last year, which was already the best year for sales in a decade. However, some Americans are notably absent from this measure of the American dream: first-time homebuyers. Historically, first-timers have made up 40 percent of all homebuyers. In 2015, they accounted for merely 30 percent. With the benefits of homeownership, why the hesitation? The answer boils down to lack of information. Many potential first-time buyers assume homeownership is only for the wealthy, who can afford a hefty 20 percent down payment. They feel in their gut what economists have verified - saving for 20 percent down on an average home with an average income could take a decade or more. But the 20 percent down payment requirement is a myth. Mortgages for as little as 3 percent down are readily available. Still, 73 percent of millennials have little or no awareness of such finance options. Last year, as many as a half a million potential first-timers may have delayed home buying because of what's in their heads, not what's in their wallets.

Most first-time buyers belong to the millennial generation - the 19 to 35 age group. The formative experience of their youth was the great recession, with its devastating foreclosure debacle. They're graduating from college with record-breaking student debt and entering the workforce to limited opportunity and stagnant wage growth. It’s not surprising that they're getting married and having children later than previous generations. Although surveys reveal they aspire to be homeowners, they’re largely unaware of mortgages designed specifically for them. For decades, the Federal Housing Authority supported mortgages with just 3.5 percent down - traditionally the mortgage choice for first-time homebuyers. Due to the great recession, lending standards became overly restrictive but now are much more reasonable. In 2014, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac began guaranteeing mortgages with down payments as low as 3 percent, available through responsible lenders nationwide. Like all mortgages, low down-payment programs require good credit and verifiable income, and may impose additional requirements such as mortgage insurance. But combined with near historic lows in interest rates, they're an attractive opportunity for first-time homebuyers. What’s more, rents have

been escalating faster than home prices. The percentage of an average income needed for rent often exceeds that needed for a mortgage payment. A low-down payment mortgage could actually improve monthly cash flow for many buyers. Those pondering the prospect of homeownership should understand mortgage interest, property taxes, and some closing costs are deductible and can significantly reduce one's tax bill. But there are a number of lesser-known advantages that warrant as much - if not more - consideration. For many Americans, homeownership is the single greatest contributor to building wealth. The net worth of homeowners is far greater than of renters - a truth that persisted through the financial crisis. Additionally, homeownership creates a stronger neighborhood bond and is a predictor of positive outcomes for children. Children of homeowners are much more likely to finish high school. The mistaken belief that a large down payment is required to buy a home is preventing many who are creditworthy from enjoying the benefits of homeownership. In reality, today's real estate market is very receptive to first-time buyers. Millennials may be facing many challenges and uncertainties, but getting into a home of their own needn't be one of them.

further connect with clients and more effectively grasp their visions. Kuo’s new retail space, which conveys the feel of a fairy-tale cottage owned by Jane Austen, has also allowed her the opportunity to further Smitten on Paper’s very-own brand. The floor space not only serves as a field on which to test Smitten on Paper’s custom lines of stationery (planners, greeting cards, notebooks, and more), it also provides Kuo the space to carry a curated selection of products from local artisans/artists. Finally, Smitten on Paper’s new home allows Kuo to host a pleasant variety of stationery-related workshops, most of which have an emphasis on calligraphy. Kuo ensures that participants receive their money’s worth - instructors have to apply to hold classes, but, for the most part, workshops are led by well-known, highly-respected industry names – for example: Molly Thorpe, author of “Modern Calligraphy,” recently flew in from Greece to hold a sold-out session at Smitten on Paper. Kuo reveals that workshops are social gatherings,

as much as they are educational. Furthermore, Old Town’s wealth of dining/ retail options complement and, essentially, enhance the workshop experience, “Monrovia is fantastic – the parking is great, there are restaurants nearby … so when we do have an all-day workshop, it’s convenient

First Avenue Middle School Welcomes New Principal By may S. ruiz When the class of 2019 enters the gates of First Avenue Middle School in Arcadia next week, the students will be met by a familiar face – Semeen Issa. However, Dr. Issa, who has been assistant principal at the school for the

past six years, will be greeting them as their new principal. That Dr. Issa thoroughly enjoys being at First Avenue is evident, given this will be her 17th year there. Recalls Dr. Issa, “I used to work in the Los Angeles Unified School District but I decided to make a change because I wanted

to spend more time with my young children. Being an Arcadia resident, I was spending much of the day commuting to work, so I got a job here as a teacher. I taught sixth grade English and history; sixth, seventh, and eighth grade intermediate ELD (English Language Development). I

did this for 10 years until six years ago when I was named assistant principal.” Hiring a principal from the outside to bring fresh ideas to the table may have its pluses, but, as Dr. Issa is quick to point out, “Familiarity with the school culture and how it runs is vitally important. Having a headmaster who is aware of what the faculty wants to see in their principal is a big advantage. I know both sides of the coin, having worked as a teacher and administrator. Additionally, my daughter went to middle school here, so I was also a past parent. Having worn several hats at First Avenue gives me a multi-dimensional knowledge and perspective.” Dr. Issa will ensure a seamless transition from her predecessor’s term to hers as she steers the course for First Avenue’s approximately 800 students. She, together with her faculty and staff, are charged with making sure that every child succeeds. She says, “The federal government mandates that we educate everyone who walks in our doors. But we at AUSD take it a step further by finding out exactly what they need and personalizing their education while they’re here.” Continues Dr. Issa, “This is a constant discussion we have here because the time they’re with us are critical years because they go through major developmental changes – they enter our gates as little kids and leave as teenagers. We not only prepare them academically, we also make sure they have

transformative experiences and become leaders.” One leadership training program at First Avenue is called WEB (Where Everyone Belongs) program. Dr. Issa explains, “Eighth grade students guide sixth graders as they transition from elementary to middle school. They are chosen from 120 seventh graders who apply in May to become mentors during their last year. Based on their applications, interviews, and teacher recommendations, 40 of them are selected and are charged to look after a group of 10 to 12 sixth graders.” Extra-curriculars are a major component of middle school life. Dr. Issa expounds, “When AUSD transitioned from the junior high to the middle school format back in the 1990s, the faculty and staff had been vocal about the need to focus on the whole child. That meant keeping all sports and arts in our curriculum.

During her first year as principal, Dr. Issa plans to coordinate with the Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) to expand something that functions well. She says, “I will work closely with the PTSA to develop more student-centered events. I want our middle school-ers to adjust comfortably to this new phase and to become responsible young people.” Dr. Issa relates, “Often parents hover over their kids and worry, and rightly so. But during middle school, it’s helpful for adults to give children the space to mature. Likewise, it’s a time for parents to adapt to their kids’ growing independence. I want to provide a happy, positive, and memorable experience for everyone while they’re here.” With Dr. Issa at the helm, First Avenue students will emerge confidently prepared for high school and beyond.

Arcadia Students Return Back to School By jonathan tsou As the final days of summer come to a close, students scramble to finish their summer assignments and to purchase their school supplies. Next Tuesday, Aug. 17, Arcadia High School students will return to school and, one day later, all Arcadia elementary schools and middle schools will start. It is a well-anticipated day for many parents, as they send their student to school. For many parents, they take photos and post them on their social media page. Arcadia Unified School District recently started the social media campaign #ArcadiaFirstDay - the idea is to help engage the community and to show

First day of school at Arcadia High. - Courtesy Photo

the energy of the students for the first day of school. The genius behind the campaign? Ryan Foran, the public information officer. He says that "social media campaigns are a great way to engage with our community and AUSD families." Foran also pointed out

that last year the Reyes family used the hashtag, showing all four siblings in each class at Arcadia High School and was featured on ABC7. Arcadia Unified began using the hashtag two years ago, however, it picked up momentum last year and they are expecting a lot more tweets this year. Not only do these photos show the excitement of the students, they also provide long-lasting memories that can easily be accessed in the future. If people are not on social media, they can email their pictures to news@ ausd.net and the photos will be posted in the Arcadia Unified School District Facebook album with all the other pictures from social media.

Common Core Curriculum By Mary Mcnulty

I

t is hard to remember any issue that has sparked such a debate in education as the Common Core Curriculum. California finds itself in the minority by supporting the recent national roll out. According to the California Teachers Association, 88 percent of the membership backs the program. The national number, supplied by Education Next, is far different at 50 percent. Many parents are confused over the necessity of the Common Core Curriculum and feel they have had little if any involvement in the process. The concern is that the Common Core standards will bring down the system. It is believed courses will be taught for testing success at the lowest level. The Common Core State Standards Initiative answered this and other concerns explaining: “Since this work began, there has been an explicit agreement that no state would lower its standards. The standards were informed by the best in the country, the highest international standards, and evidence and expertise about educational outcomes.” This

and other concerns are addressed online at: www. corestandards.org/aboutthe-standards/myths-vsfacts. The original California budget for discretionary spending on the program was an astronomical $2.4 billion, awarded over the last two years. The 2016-2017 plan seeks an additional $1.2 billion. Many are concerned with the limited number of restrictions on its use - the money will be quickly lost in the bureaucracy, with no real accountability, despite the program’s massive documentation. The math requirement is covered in 162 pages and English in 98. The documents present very distinct goals at each grade level. In grade 1 math, for example, guidelines call for basic addition and subtraction, ability to tell time, and basic understanding of shapes. In grade 1 language arts, for example, standards require the ability to re-tell the story, understand illustrations, and who is telling the story. The state has supplied practice tests to prepare students at each grade level. The English exam reflects in many ways the “old school” method as demonstrated by

the test samples. The math portion has created the most controversy by recreating the process. It is best to refer to the attachment for a better understanding: www. testprepreview.com/common-core-test-prep.htm. The question now becomes, is this tremendous amount of money reflected in improved student results? Quite simply the answer is “no,” according to Ed Surge. Com. Test scores show California students in grades 3 to 8 and 11, fall below the national level. Only 44 percent of California’s 3.2 million test takers met or exceeded the English language arts portion. With math, the number within the meet/exceeds category dropped to 34 percent. As with a majority of testing, socioeconomics played a large role in the success rate of the student. White and Asian students fared much better than Hispanics and Blacks. “There are some notable disparities in how different groups performed: 65 percent of English language learners, 46 percent of African-American students, 41 percent of Native American students, and 39 percent of Hispanic students scored in the lowest grade category

(‘Standard Not Met’), versus 12 percent for Asian students and 18 percent for white students. The gap is even more pronounced for the mathematics portion of the test. And students in non-economically disadvantaged households were more than twice more likely to meet or exceed proficiency standards than their less fortunate peers.” To view full test results, search “Common Core Test Results” at www. edsurge.com. In 2015, California ranked 31 nationally, as far as graduation rates are concerned (www.scpr.org/ news/2015/03/17/50397/ mixed-news-for-californiain-national-high-school). The score does not speak well especially for the disadvantaged. Whether the Common Core Curriculum is the answer to insure California improves its educational standards is yet to be determined. One measurement of its success can be found in the increased interest parents now have in the education process and courses. The key is to keep parental involvement in the forefront, working with educators to ensure California regains its footing as a national education leader.

PCI system, which uses the scale from 0 to 100 to rate the condition of the paved surfaces - the lower the PCI rate, the faster it deteriorates, which creates holes, making it difficult for drivers or residents to walk/ drive on. Based on the budget and conditions of the streets, the proposed project includes slurry seal, cold mill, overlay, and reconstruction. These are the types of resurfacing methods PMP may use to resurface the streets, depending on the particular conditions. The street resurfacing includes two million square feet of pavement, in addition to digging out and reconstructing small areas where there are major potholes and cracks on the streets. Slurry seal is the least expensive pavement coating. Slurry seal is a mixture of water and asphalt and thin coating that is poured onto the pavement to fill up the cracks, ultimately making the surface look more appealing and more manageable to drive upon.

The debris flow areas are above the Westvale Road, Crestview Court, Cedarwood Avenue, Las Lomas Road, Greenbank Avenue, Valley View Neighborhood, and Brookridge Road. On Friday we went to Featherdale Wildlife Park and checked touching the animals off our list. Koalas sleep for 20 hours a day and eat for the other four. Luckily one Koala was awake and available for us to touch. We definitely cuddled and took plenty of pictures. In addition, there were a lot of kangaroos around the park and we got to feed them. They are so soft, and followed

you everywhere for food. Featherdale had just about every Australian animal you could name. From small animals to snakes to large ones like crocodiles, we all had a really fun time at Featherdale Wildlife Park! Old Friends, Old Priorities By Dorothy Denne

I

bumped into an old friend this morning. Well, not literally but we did give each other a hug. He and I used to volunteer for the

same group, so we saw each other several times a week. Then life pulled us in different directions for different reasons and our visits became few and far between. Lately our lives have

changed around again and we seem to be popping up in the same places on a frequent basis. He commented on that this morning and I said it is because we both go to the places where the elite meet.

That sounded good to us. Then he laughed and said, “we better be careful or a rumor might start about our meetings.” That sounded good to us too - the rumor, that is. We fig-

ure we might even promote it, 'cause, at our age, it would be good for our image. Old friends are good aren't they? New ones are important if for no other reason, again at our age, you sometimes need replacements. New friends are good for other reasons too but old friends are just special. They are like an old pair of slippers, they're comfortable. Dr. Dean Ornish said, "Spending time with friends and loved ones is a basic human need, as basic as eating, breathing, and sleeping. That need so often goes unfulfilled in our culture. And, it threatens our survival." Now I knew that and I've

said it often in similar phrasing. He just got his words printed in a place that pays better. That's okay. I'm not starving. Speaking of starving, did you notice that when Ornish spoke of the basics he listed eating before breathing and sleeping? Now that man had his priorities straight. With the start of a new lifestyle, I considered looking at my own priorities and maybe making some resolutions. Then I considered further. My old habits have brought me this far, so they can't be all bad. Good friends, good food, good laughs. What more could I ask?

If the high bidder closes the sale prior to the expiration of any extension period, the unused portion of the extension fee shall be applied toward the amount due. If the high bidder is unable to close the sale within the required period, or within any extensions of time granted by the Secretary, the high bidder may be required to forfeit the cash deposit or, at the election of the foreclosure commissioner after consultation with the HUD representative, will be liable to HUD for any costs incurred as a result of such failure. The commissioner may, at the direction of the HUD representative, offer the property to the second highest bidder for an amount equal to the highest price offered by that bidder. There is no right of redemption, or right of possession based upon a right of redemption, in the mortgagor or others subsequent to a foreclosure completed pursuant to the Act. Therefore, the Foreclosure Commissioner will issue a Deed to the purchaser(s) upon receipt of the entire purchase price in accordance with the terms of the sale as provided herein. HUD does not guarantee that the property will be vacant. The scheduled foreclosure sale shall be cancelled or adjourned if it is established, by documented written application of the mortgagor to the Foreclosure Commissioner not less than 3 days before the date of sale, or otherwise, that the default or defaults upon which the foreclosure is based did not exist at the time of service of this notice of default and foreclosure sale, or all amounts due under the mortgage agreement are tendered to the Foreclosure Commissioner, in the form of a certified or cashier's check payable to the Secretary of HUD, before public auction of the property is completed. The amount that must be paid if the mortgage is to be reinstated prior to the scheduled sale is $336,212.13 as of 08/28/2016, plus all other amounts that would be due under the mortgage agreement if payments under the mortgage had not been accelerated, advertising costs and postage expenses incurred in giving notice, mileage by the most reasonable road distance for posting notices and for the Foreclosure Commissioner's attendance at the sale, reasonable and customary costs incurred for title and lien record searches, the necessary out-of-pocket costs incurred by the Foreclosure Commissioner for recording documents, a commission for the Foreclosure Commissioner, and all other costs incurred in connection with the foreclosure prior to reinstatement. Tender of payment by certified or cashier's check or application for cancellation of the foreclosure sale shall be submitted to the address of the Foreclosure Commissioner provided below. A Message From the CIF-SS Commissioner Welcome to the 201617 school year! As I do each year with my first “Message from the Commissioner,” I would like to give you a preview of what is to come … - Competitive equity playoff groupings: this year will certainly be known as the first year that we implemented competitive equity playoff groupings in our section. Our playoff divisions for fall sports were released in June and the playoff divisions for winter and spring sports are coming soon. I truly appreciate all of the hard work that has gone into making this concept a reality and I hope you join me in looking forward to seeing it all play out in the time ahead. - Increased travel reimbursements for member schools: in 2016-17, we will be increasing the mileage reimbursements and meal allowances for our member schools in our revenue sports of football, boys/girls basketball, and boys/girls volleyball. Be looking for more information on those increases in our playoff bulletins for each respective sport. - Website/ CIFSSHome/ technology advances: this is the second year for our website that we launched in July 2015. We were very pleased with how well it functioned in year one and know that we will continue to work on improving the capabilities and functionality of our website this upcoming school year and beyond. New features to look for in 2016-17 are the development of an enhanced mobile version of our website that includes links to our social media platforms, as well as developing an app to be utilized within the CIFSS-

Commissioner Rob Wigod.

Home system. - Professional development for athletic directors/ athletic administrators: in 2016-17, we are looking to build upon the successes we enjoyed last year with the introduction of our MVP AD Program. Through our Fall Eligibility Workshops, the Athletic Administrator Summit, MVP AD Exam, etc., we hope to assist our athletic directors/ athletic administrators in being more effective educational leaders. Check our website for more information on the MVP AD program. Also, the CIF Southern Section Athletic Administrator Summit will take place on Monday, Oct. 17 at the Sheraton Fairplex Hotel and Conference Center in Po-

mona. New for this year will be a series of presentations, especially geared toward our high school principals in an effort to engage them in professional development as well. Sign-ups are now available on our website. - Area placement – as we enter year three of our current Re-leaguing Cycle, we will begin the area placement process in preparation for the 20182022 Re=leaguing Cycle. In September 2016, member schools will be surveyed regarding their requests for area placement for 20182022. More details on the processes and timelines for area placement will be distributed at that time. - Season of sport calendar changes for 2018-19: the CIF state office recently announced changes to their state championships calendars in certain sports, effective with the 2018-19 school year. Along with the sports already announced, be looking for a proposal to examine the sports calendars of other sports and be prepared for a discussion this year on changing the SOP dates to correspond to the sports calendar changes for 2018-19.These are just a few of the many new and exciting things happening this upcoming school year. I hope you are as energized as we are to get it all started. I thank you very much for your continued help and support and wish you good luck always. All the best, - Rob Wigod, Commissioner, CIF Southern Section
