The United States War Department recently provided white marble headstones for two local veterans of the last century’s world wars for their family plot in Pioneer Cemetery. One marks the grave of Aubrey C. Young Sr., who served as a private in the US Army Signal Corps in France during World War I and the other his son’s, Second Lieutenant Aubrey C. Young Jr., who co-piloted a B-17 over Germany in World War II. Aubrey Sr. was assigned to the Third Balloon Company and saw action in the major American-Allied offensives of 1918 – the St. Mihiel Salient and the Meuse-Argonne. The Meuse-Argonne Offensive was the largest in United States military history, involving 1.2 million American soldiers, and brought the war to an end. The battle also cost 26,277 lives, and 95,786 wounded, making it the largest and bloodiest operation of the war for the American Expeditionary Forces and the deadliest in US history. In 1923 Aubrey Sr., known as Cy, moved his wife Grace and infant son Aubrey Jr., from his birthplace and parent’s home in Alliance, Neb., to California. DUI Checkpoints Planned for Memorial Day Weekend Pasadena Police Department Traffic Unit will be conducting a DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoint on Friday, May 27, at an undisclosed location within the city limits between the hours of 7 p.m. and 3 a.m. The deterrent effect of DUI checkpoints is a proven resource in reducing the

number of persons killed and injured in alcohol or drug involved crashes. Research shows that crashes involving an impaired driver can be reduced by up to 20 percent when well-publicized DUI checkpoints and proactive DUI patrols are conducted routinely. DUI Checkpoints are

placed in locations based on collision statistics and frequency of DUI arrests, affording the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence. Locations are chosen with safety considerations for the officers and the public. Officers will be looking

for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment with officers checking drivers for proper licensing delaying motorists only momentarily. When possible, specially trained officers will be available to evaluate those suspected of drugimpaired driving, which now accounts for a growing number of impaired driving crashes. Recent statistics reveal

that 30 percent of drivers in fatal crashes had one or more drugs in their systems. A study of active drivers showed more tested positive for drugs that may impair driving (14 percent) than did for alcohol (7.3 percent). Of the drugs, marijuana was most prevalent, at 7.4 percent, slightly more than alcohol. Everyone should be mindful that if you are taking medication

– whether prescription or over-the-counter – drinking even small amounts of alcohol can greatly intensify the impairment affects. Drivers caught driving impaired can expect the impact of a DUI arrest to include jail time, fines, fees, DUI classes, other expenses that can exceed $10,000 not to mention the embarrassment when friends and family find out.

New ‘Coast to Coast’ Seat Belt Enforcement Effort

Ms. Jean Koehler, CLTC, CRPC® Financial Advisor | Business Financial Advisor Ms. Jean Koehler, CLTC, CRPC® Ameriprise Financial Services, Inc. Financial Advisor |Dr. Business 55 E. Sanchez, Pasadena Police Department. - Courtesy photo

This Education Enforcement Period Comes in Time for the Memorial Day Holiday From May 23 to June 5, local law enforcement personnel will participate in the national Click It or Ticket campaign, in an effort to save lives through increased seat belt use. This education enforcement period comes ahead of the Memorial Day holiday, one of the busiest travel weekends of the year. According to research conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, while 88.5 percent of passenger vehicle occupants buckled up in 2015, almost 50 percent of occupants of fatal crashes nationwide are not restrained. In some states, the rate is as high as 70 percent unrestrained in fatal crashes. In California, more than a half million people travel our roadways at grave risk without proper restraints. These facts gravely highlight the need for increased education, awareness and enforcement and awareness of seat belt use.

This year, NHTSA is aiming to increase campaign participation even more by coordinating a “Coast to Coast” seat belt education and enforcement effort with the California Highway Patrol and law enforcement around the I-10, I-40, I-70, and I-80 corridors. Additionally, law enforcement agencies statewide are joining the Click It or Ticket effort to emphasize the “Coast to Coast” seat belt safety awareness campaign in all 50 states. “As law enforcement, we have a special role in helping protect the safety of our citizens, from the East to the West Coast,” said Chief Phillip L. Sanchez, Pasadena Police Department. “Time after time, we see the deadly results that come from drivers and passengers refusing to wear a seat belt. Wearing a seat belt is one of the most important steps in increasing survivability in a crash. Our job is to stop those who are not buckled up and to keep

them from repeating this potentially deadly mistake.” In 2014, nearly half of the 21,022 passenger vehicle occupants killed in crashes nationally were unrestrained, according to NHTSA. During the nighttime hours of 6 p.m. to 5:59 a.m., that number increased to 57 percent of those killed. Law enforcement agencies will write citations day and night, with a zero-tolerance approach. “Hundreds of thousands of citizens will be traveling this Memorial Day weekend, as well as throughout the summer vacation season. We want to make sure that people are buckling up to keep themselves and their families safe. It is the greatest defense in a vehicle crash,” said Rhonda Craft, director of the California Office of Traffic Safety. Possible Millionaire Tax on Ballot to Combat Homelessness

El Monte American Legion Auxiliary Unit 261’s ‘Americanism Essay Winners’

By Annette Semerdjian The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors will pursue a ballot to tax millionaires in order to fund programs that help the city’s growing homeless population. On May 17 the vote was cast to reach Governor Jerry Brown and ask Sacramento officials to change the state law in order to grant Los Angeles County access to taxing personal incomes. The Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority announced a 5.7 percent increase in homelessness from last year. They estimated a population of about 46, 874 homeless people on the streets at night. The vote was 3-2 at last week’s board meeting. Supervisor Hilda L. Solis and Don Knabe motioned to use existing funding in a more fiscally responsible way, funding mental health science, substance abuse treatment, and employment for the homeless. Solis and Knabe’s motion for examining the board’s allocation of funds in regards to aid for homelessness passed and the board will soon re-

view how money is spent combating homelessness. Supervisor Mark RidleyThomas pushed for the state law change in order to put the millionaire tax on the ballot. “It won’t get better unless we have a significant intervention,” he said. “Each member of this board has said repeatedly that one-time funding isn’t sufficient. Now it’s time to get on with the rigorous exploration of the kind of funding that would be necessary,” Ridley-Thomas said in last week’s board meeting. Another compelling speaker was Ed Bernard, a homeless man who ben-

efits from non-profits such as Sanctuary of Hope South Los Angeles. “I just want to continue to get that support for homeless youth and also the homeless around LA County,” said Bernard. The Sanctuary of Hope in South Los Angeles has raised student GPAs from 2.6 to 2.86, on average, and has a 90 percent enrollment rate to college or vocational programs for its beneficiaries. They also noticed an 83 percent increase in income through financial aid, benefits, and employment of the program’s participants. This non-profit, like

many others, would continue its success with homeless youth if the millionaire tax is put on the ballot and passed. According to the Sanctuary of Hope, half of the population of homeless people is younger than 30 years old. Supervisors Don Knabe and Mike Antonovich voted against the initial push to Sacramento for allowing the millionaire tax to be on the ballot. Antonovich instead proposed funding towards addressing mental health of the homeless, not more housing. Taking money from other taxes are also options to fund the efforts against homelessness. One option is to use funds generated by the parcel tax, which is a property tax that aids public education and other government services. Another is to withdraw from Measure B, which funds trauma centers for medical emergencies and response to bio-chemical terrorism. Taxing marijuana will also be considered. The measure would tax income earners of over $1 million per year, which will bring Los Angeles County about $243 million in funding for combating homelessness. If the measure reaches the November ballot, it is up to the voters to approve it by at least two-thirds.

- Group 1: “Why Should We Stand As Our Flag Passes By?” First Place Winner: Allan Legaspic - New Temple Elementary School. “When a flag passes by, people stand up, and put their right hand over their heart. They should do that because many soldiers risk their lives to keep our country free and safe. A lot of people died fighting World War II. Blood is red so the red stripes in the American flag stand for the blood of soldiers. Some people say the red on the flag means hardiness and valor. The blue on the flag stands for the commander in chief. Some people go to sporting events and before the game, they sing the National Anthem. Boys need to take off their hats to show honor and respect for the soldiers that have died fighting for our country. They don’t need to take off their hats, but if they do, that’s up to their opinion. The boy scouts carry a flag when they march in a parade. Boy scouts are one of the only organizations that can burn flags. Some people don’t even care about standing up. Some people that went to World War II lost their legs just to give us freedom. People that lost body parts get mad at people that have everything they need and can’t stand up for the flag. People who don’t stand up when the flag passes by don’t seem to care for about the soldiers who died for their freedom. This is why I think you should stand when a flag passes by!” - Group 2: “What Can I Do for My Country?” First Place Winner:

Brianna Saavedra - Dean L. Shively Middle School. “There are many things you can do for your country. Like recycling, cleaning beaches, and many other things. I will explain to you what I can do for my country, and maybe you will be inspired to do the same. One of the main things I can do for my country is to stop littering. Oh, I can also help clean beaches. I can clean up parks so dogs won’t eat anything they’re not supposed to eat. Sometimes I can just pick up trash whenever I see it on the ground. It is always good to be environment friendly. I can grow plants to make my city look nicer. And it is also nice to plant because it gives us more oxygen to breathe. I think my country needs more planting to make it look more friendly. Another thing I can do for my country is to donate blood or donate to any charities. It’s good to donate blood because it can help a person in need of the right amount of blood in their body. It is good to donate money or anything else to any charities because it shows how kind and generous you are. Also just being a good person is a good thing, too. It just feels good, too. The reason why I wrote this is because I think our country needs more improvement. My country can use more plants and other things. For example, helping those in need or just be a kinder person.”

This year’s El Niño rains have had a limited impact on our part of the state. Water conservation remains as critical as ever as California enters into its fifth year of drought. Sierra Madre City Council approved a measure earlier this month that would increase the penalty rate assessed on excess water use. The City of Sierra Madre would like to thank its water-wise customers for doing their part to make every drop count. The latest water billing numbers for May show 75 percent of Sierra Madre customers met, or outperformed, their water conservation targets. The remaining 25 percent

of customers are of increasing concern for the city, as many of the customers who exceeded their water use target in the month have a repeat history of doing so. The City of Sierra Madre will introduce a new water penalty rate, beginning July 1, 2016. The rate will apply to each billing unit used in excess of a customer’s conservation target. The current penalty rate is $5.04/unit. The new rate will increase to $10.72, or two times the Tier 4 rate. If you would like to learn more about conservation and water utility rates, please visit the City of Sierra Madre website at: www.cityofsierramadre.com.

How to Sell High: Avoid these Three Mistakes When Selling Your Home Alhambra - When you decide to sell your home, setting your optimal asking price is one of the most important decisions you will ever make. Price is often the first thing a prospective buyer sees, and many homes are passed over as “not in our price range” before the home even has a chance of being shown. Your asking price is often your home’s “first impression,” and if you want to realize the most money you can for your home, it’s imperative that you make an excellent first impression. This is not as easy as it sounds,

and pricing strategy should not be taken lightly. Pricing too high can be as costly to a homeseller as pricing too low. Comparing against what other homes in your neighborhood have sold for is only a small part of the process, and by itself is not nearly enough to help you make the best decision. A recently study, which compiles 10 years of industry research, has resulted in a new special report entitled “Homesellers: How to Get the Price You Want (and Need).” This report will help you understand pricing strategy from three different angles. When taken

together, this information will help you price your home to sell fast, and sell for top dollar. To order your FREE Special Report, call toll-free 1-888-3004632 and enter 1016. Dear Editor Currently Gabrielino 19. 40-point melds High School, located at 1327 S. San Gabriel Blvd, San Gabriel, CA. is in secret behind closed door turmoil with allegation of students cheating on exams by known students who purchased and used exams to improve their grades in two classes being offered at the high school. Students in AP Environmental Science and AP Biology class have been identified by name to have allegedly purchased, used and distributed copies of their final exam. However, inappropriate action by an assistant principal in obtaining evidence has placed 18. Caribbean, e.g.

fear and legal intimidation to the administrative staff to NOT discipline the culprits, and are simply going to mandatory have all students guilty or not repeat the exams in question, allow the guilty students to retake the exam, and not document the incident in any student academic files. First every school should have a strict zero tolerance for any level of cheating. The school motto is PRIDE, TRADITION & HONOR. All students have a right to a safe, respectful school learning environment. Cheating is dishonest, stealing exams, selling and buying exams are ranked at a higher category offense and each responsible student should be held accountable for his or her actions. Each student regardless of first violation or not should receive an F grade, and a “no confidence” attached to their student transcript, and should be suspended from any future awards or scholarships, enacted ineligibility to take future AP and Honors class to send a clear message that cheating like bullying, drugs, harassment is zero tolerated and to preserve the highest standard of academic integrity the school pride themselves of. Second, innocent students should not be held accountable for the actions of the few immature dishonest students by questioning their own hard working study habits. By having them retake the exam there is a smaller possibility the score might improve with a second chance, but there is larger chance that their score might be lower due to the current campus atmosphere, anxiety, lack of preparedness due to other

school activities as the academic years comes to an end, day and time the exams will be administered crammed in and simply the psychological trauma that the school questions their integrity. The school staff must admit to their failing to preserve the school’s future. We the parents hope that Principal Sharon Heinrich, Assistant Principals Ruth Esseln, Vincent Lopez and Jonathan Lyons do not make the innocent student retake the exam and only reprimand the known guilty parties involved in the scandal to demonstrate their own professional integrity. And live by the school’s mission statement “A commitment to Constant and Never-ending Improvement,” and not take a step back. - Name Withheld

Memorial Day Events on KCET KCET, the nation's largest independent public television station, recently announced plans to host two blocks of special programming during Memorial Day weekend, exploring the history of war and the healing of veterans. A robust line up of programming starting Sunday, May 29, at 7:30 p.m. and Monday, May 30, at 12:30 p.m. will include a variety of documentaries as well as a rebroadcast of the live performance of “Fallujah,” the first opera composed about the Iraq war experience produced in conjunction with the Long Beach Opera and explore.org. The lineup includes the following:

JUMBO CHEESE PIZZA & LARGE ORDER OF SPAGHETTI & SALAD

- “Sands of War” - Sunday, May 29, 7:30 p.m. “Sands of War” recounts the forgotten story of the Desert Training Center, established in California's Mojave Desert by General George Patton to prepare one million soldiers to fight in World War II. Told through the personal experiences of WWII veterans, using current and rare archival footage, “Sands of War” chronicles the compelling account of the young men and women thrust upon

the stage of the world conflict. Peter Coyote narrates. “Into Harm’s Way” – Sunday, May 29, at 9 p.m. This 90-minute special takes an honest and unflinching look at the shadow that the Vietnam War continues to cast on surviving members of the West Point Class of 1967. Compelling interviews, archival photographs and footage, animated sequences, andcontemporary clips chronicle the men's experiences - from their challenging first year as plebes to the fierce jungle combat to their post-Vietnam lives. A collection of West Pointers poignantly share their first-hand stories about the carnage of war, the war's impact on their lives and beliefs, and their enduring bonds of brotherhood.

- “Heroes on Deck” - Sunday, May 29, at 10:30 p.m. This documentary sheds light on a little-known training operation conducted by the U.S. Navy on Lake Michigan during World War II. Between 1942 and 1945, following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the Navy trained nearly 15,000 pilots, including 41stPresident George H.W. Bush, to land and take off from two makeshift aircraft carriers in

the safety of landlocked Lake Michigan. It was not until the late 1970s that interest in resurrecting the WWII fighters surfaced and, with the approval of the U.S. Navy, a skilled team of professionals developed the tools and techniques to locate and recover the forgotten warplanes.

- Artbound “Fallujah: Art, Healing and PTSD” - Monday, May 30, at 12:30 p.m. USMC Sergeant Christian Ellis was a machine gunner in Iraq, whose platoon was ambushed, leaving him with a broken back and only one of a few survivors. With the encouragement and support of philanthropist Charles Annenberg Weingarten, Ellis collaborated with Iraqi-American playwright Heather Raffo to transform his demons into a work of art aimed at shining a light on the aftermath of war, PTSD, and the fragility of life. - “Searching For Home: Coming Back From War” Monday, May 30, at 3 p.m. “Searching For Home: Coming Back From War” explores the harrowing effects of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) on military families when veterans return from combat, spanning from World War II to Afghanistan. Create Memorable Moments This Summer By Designing an Outdoor Room By Melinda Myers No matter your budget, space, or gardening experience, you can design an outdoor entertainment area for you, your family, and friends to enjoy. Start by gathering ideas from magazines, the internet, and websites like Gardener’s Supply Company for examples of outdoor garden spaces. Next, select an area that is convenient and suitable for your outdoor entertaining. Define the space using outdoor rugs and furniture or tall-planters (gardeners.com) to serve as the walls for your garden room. A bistro set and a couple of chairs make for an intimate space on a balcony. Those with more room may want to include an outdoor wicker and teak dining set. Fill the planters with ornamental grasses, papyrus, cannas, and other flowering plants to create a living screen. Add a splash of color and flavor to the space by growing herbs and vegetables combined with flowers in these and additional planters in your garden space. Include ingredients for your favorite drinks, appetizers, and meals. Your guests will enjoy plucking a few mint leaves for their iced tea or mojito, harvesting fresh greens from a “Salad Garden Bar” and dressing up the meal with a few pesticide-free edible flowers like nasturtiums, calendula, and daylilies. Busy gardeners and those that travel may want to try self-watering pots. These containers have built-in water reservoirs to provide a constant flow of water to the plants. This means you need to water less often, while still enjoy-

ing healthy and productive plants. Add some height and focal points with topiaries. Purchase a sculpted evergreen or train vines up a twist topiary frame to create a bit of living art. And do not forget to add some garden art and statuary. Extend your enjoyment with outdoor lighting. A few votive candles in old punch cups are perfect for intimate gatherings in small spaces. Add a bit more illumination with the help of solar illuminated planters, solar deck lights, post caps, and solar cubes and spheres. No buried electric lines or extension cords needed. Use these lights to lead you down the path to your garden space or brighten the space for an evening of fun. So get busy creating the garden room of your dreams. Once you get started, you will be looking for more opportunities for that quiet get-away, outdoor kitchen, and more ways to enjoy your garden. Melinda Myers is a gardening expert, TV/radio host, author, and columnist.

Our Forgotten ‘States’ By Roshan Perera

A

sian Pacific American Heritage month is coming to a close. When most of us think of “Asian-Americans,” we imagine someone who has come from China, Japan, Korea, or maybe the Philippines. But this month also celebrates Pacific Americans. People from Oceania have also contributed to the tapestry of the American story and need to be acknowledged during this time as well. This month tends to highlight the heritage and history of people who were once foreigners to our land. It aims to recognize the struggles and hardships they have faced and celebrate the contributions they have made. However, we often forget that the struggle is not over for some. Those that live on the territories of American Samoa, Guam, and the Northern Mariana Islands are often forgotten in American life. These islands do not have statehood, but are protected territories of the United States. Often overlooked, the men and women who live on these territories have

varying degrees of civic representation, voting rights, and citizenship status. Unlike the other most other Asian groups, the people who live on these islands did not immigrate to this country. Typically, these small islands were occupied by the United States at some point and later gave up their sovereignty to the United States. Since then they have become integral parts in maintaining the US presence in the Asia-Pacific region. In fact, even though American Samoans are not US citizens and are not allowed to vote, they are ranked first by United States Army Recruiting Command for recruit enlistment. This means American Samoa commits more young men and women to fight and defend the American Constitution, whose freedoms they do not enjoy, than any other state in the Union. These islands fall under the jurisdiction of the US Department of the Interior. They have no state sovereignty of their own and must abide by all national laws. While they do have representatives in the US Congress, they are non-voting delegates.

The situation that these residents face is very reminiscent of the early-American colonial days. Just as we had to subject ourselves to the colonial monarchy, with no representation and legal recourse, the residents of these US Territories are left in a similar situation. Hawaii was once an independent sovereign nation that became a part of the United States. Its residents gained the full protection of being US citizens. It is time that we take a hard look at how to incorporate the people of the US Territories into the melting pot of American society and civic life. Asian Pacific American Heritage month lets us celebrate the achievements of, and recognize the struggles of Asian Americans. But we do not live in a utopia and we are still faced with cultural bias, intolerance, and apathy. Moving forward we should always remember that most of us where foreigners and outsiders at some point in our heritage and only through our collective struggle have we made our country into the great nation it is today.

ighlander Pet Center’s owner, Jill Jungheim’s has had lifelong passion for animals. Growing up, she kept a myriad of pets: cats, dogs, birds, fish, lizards, mice, and even a squirrel, “You’d think we lived on a farm, but I was raised in Hollywood,” said Jungheim. After spending years on the corporate end of the entertainment industry, she decided to follow her passion and began researching the pet supply business, “I went to a trade show, met some people and thought, ‘your stuff is really cute, I could sell that,’ next thing I knew I had my own business … it started out of my car, I would have a catalog and take orders … ” revealed Jungheim. In the beginning, her business, selling wholesale pet supplies and high-end products to both individual customers and pet boutiques alike, was truly a journey, taking her all throughout the Southland. During this time, she gained invaluable personal experience and made several critical business contacts that would help her provide unique, high-quality products down the line. In 2000, she moved to Monrovia and quickly fell in

In 2010, she moved the store to its current location in Monrovia, a converted bungalow house built in 1905. What separates Highlander Pet Center from the larger, chain pet-supply stores are the quality of their products and Jungheim’s expertise, “I carry a lot of highend pet foods that aren’t sold in those stores. I have studied pet nutrition and I’m really well-versed in what the best food would be for pets

in different situations.” The store specializes in holistic, nutritious pet foods and treats, many of which are made in the U.S.A., and they even carry some organic products. Furthermore, if your pet requires special orders, Jungheim can help you out, “I can order anything, that’s the beauty of it, Petco and PetSmart cannot place special orders because they’re corporate, whereas I can just flip through a couple catalogs, call a couple people, and I’ll pick it up for you in three to five days. My business is very flexible that way.” Highlander Pet Center is very involved in the com-

Rep. Chu Addresses Synthetic Drug Threat

On May 17, the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Homeland Security, and Investigations held a hearing entitled “Synthetic Drugs, Real Danger.” The purpose of this hearing was to examine the growing problem of the manufacture and use of synthetic drugs and law enforcement responses. Representative Judy Chu (CA-27), who participated as one of the lead Democrats of the subcommittee, released the following statement: “Cheap, dangerous, and often marketed to youth, designer synthetic drugs are becoming increasingly popular among teens and young adults – to lethal effect. The stories I heard today were incredibly moving and helped to open all of our eyes to the pernicious impact these new drugs are having on our communities. Produced in a laboratory to mimic or enhance natural drugs, synthetic drugs do not receive F‎ood and Drug Administration (FDA) approval or any oversight. Instead, they are sold readily in stores and online. And as we learned from Mr. Devin Eckhardt, whose son slipped into a coma and died from

synthetic drugs, even one use can be life-ending. It’s clear that Congress must take increased steps to strengthen our tools for stopping these drugs. That includes a new proactive approach that will streamline the process of identifying and scheduling these synthetic drugs, combat the manufacture and importation of synthetic drugs, and work with local business and law enforcement to keep them off the streets and out of our children’s hands.” Witnesses at the hearing included Mr. Louis Milione, deputy assistant administrator for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Officer William Smith Jr., a member of the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Police Department, Dr. David Nichols, adjunct professor of chemical biology and medicinal chemistry, and Mr. Devin Eckhardt, the father of Connor Eckhardt who died after his first experience with the synthetic drug known as “spice.” Further details on this hearing are accessible through the House Judiciary Committee at https://judiciary. house.gov/hearing/synthetic-drugs-real-danger/.

The Sierra Madre water story can be compared to the Abbott & Costello story of "Who's on first? What's on second? I don't know on third!” The city has more than 350 fire hydrants which, according to state law, must be flushed at least once per year. In addition to that, the city has been flushing the fire hydrants in order to clean up the water supply. This would add up to more than 200,000 gallons per month, which were sup-

posed to be deposited into the settling basins for over a year. Does the city get conservation credits for these efforts? Nothing yet! Then what should one make of the recent public comments by the public works director that because there has not been any rain, no water has gone into the settling basins. A figure released recently stated that the city has used 2,218.6 acre-feet of water from the Metropol-

itan Water District (MWD) pipeline. This covers a period of over 20 months, which means the city has used 1,331 acre-feet per year. This compares to previous figure that said the people used over 3,000 acre-feet per year prior to the start of conservation. This is far more than the 32 percent mandated state figures. These figures get distorted due to the rash of water main leaks in 2015. The total leak count from June

1 to Oct. 14 was 135, compared to 12 in 2013. Is there any question as to why the city has not reached the conservation goals in recent months? How much water has been lost with these water main leaks? No answer, the city does not say a word! Instead, all the city can talk about is how many owners have exceeded their allocation and how much fine money has been billed. Do they spend time checking into why the owner

exceeded his allocation? Over 70 homeowners have notified the city manager that their allocation was not correct and these questions are left unanswered for over two years. Does the city check into the fact that the homeowner had water leaks on their property and why? If the water mains have leaks, does the city think the same thing is happening on private property, due to the chioramines in the MWD water? Let us talk a little bit about the money being charged on our water bills. Prop 218 says that the charge must be based upon cost! What is the cost when you have four different rates? The law also says that anything different must be voted on by the people through a public vote, not just by water meters. The water being used is MWD pipeline water, a contract with the San Gabriel Valley Water District (SGVWD) at a cost of $130 per acre-foot from MWD. The city is paying to the

water district double that amount or $260 per acrefoot. So far the city's use at a $130 per acre-foot would be $288,418. This is being paid by using credits that have built up from property taxes paid directly to the water district. Did these credits cost the city anything? No has to be the answer. Then, why are they so willing to pay out double in the people's credits? The city is a member of the SGVWD and therefore, has partial ownership. Why are they so willing to pay out another $288,000 in the people's credits? How much is the city saving in Edison costs and chemical costs by not running the wells, and drawing from the aquifer? Now they are putting the MWD water directly into the settling basins and have started the pumps again. As Abbott and Costello would ask: "Why didn't you do that first?” Their answer would be, "I don't know!" - Sierra Madre Watchman

Meat Market in town. In 1935, at the age of 36, Cy succumbed after a month’s struggle with complications of peritonitis and pneumonia after a ruptured appendix. He left behind his widow, sons Aubrey Jr. (age 14) and John Bradley (age 11), and daughter Margaret (age 8). Aubrey Jr. graduated from Sierra Madre High School and attended Pasadena Junior College. At 21 years of age and three months after the attack on Pearl Harbor, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps. He took his training at Santa Ana, Oxnard, Bakersfield, and Texas. He was sent to Iceland and then to Chelveston, England, where he was attached to the 364th Bomb Squadron, 305th Bombardment Group, flying missions over Nazi Germany as the co-pilot of a B-17 Flying Fortress dubbed “The Uncouth Bastard.” On Oct. 14, 1943, the 10man crew of “The Uncouth Bastard” accompanied 290 other B-17s and 2,900 airmen on the Second Schweinfurt Raid with its aim to destroy the ball bearing plants located there. They were met all along the route to and the return from Schweinfurt by the German Luftwaffe’s

fighter arm, the Jagdwaffe, whose fighters were lethally equipped with BR-21 unguided rockets. Over the Netherlands the 305th Bomb Group lost 13 of its 16 B-17s in a matter of minutes. The mission’s loss of men and planes was staggeringly high. Sixty bombers never returned to England and 17 were so badly damaged they had to be scrapped. 650 aircrew men did not come home alive. The losses had been so heavy that the USAAF would not return to the target for four months and the raid would become known as “The Black Thursday Mission.” Twelve days later, in the late evening, a telegram from the War Department arrived at Young’s mother’s Ramona Avenue home informing her that her son was Missing In Action. Four of “The Uncouth Bastard” crew members were taken prisoner and spent the rest of the war in Stalag 17B. Aubrey and five others perished when their fully bombloaded plane hit the ground at Immendorf, Germany. There is still and indentation in the ground where it exploded and visitors to the site report some plane parts remain visible.

Interstellar Travel Is the Goal of This Gates Millennium Scholar By May S. Ruiz For many people, Albert Einstein’s theories are topics that just go way over their heads. For Prakash Dass, a senior at John Muir High School who has been awarded the Gates Millennium Scholarship, they are matters to wrap his head around. Prakash states, “Einstein proved to us that we cannot travel faster than the speed of light. He started the conversation which became a jumping off point for many scientists in much the same way that Isaac Newton inspired his work. My life’s ambition is to accomplish the counter argument to Einstein’s theory – that we indeed can. “We would need an infinite amount of energy to reach the speed of light, but what if we found a way to bend space instead? We wouldn’t be bending the laws of physics; we aren’t using energy to propel us but we’re still getting to a different location because the space around us is moving.” For Prakash, that concept did not just come about from too many hours watching “Star Trek,” “I think

there’s a group of people at NASA researching it but there isn’t enough science to back it up yet. I would like to be one of those scientists who can come to a definite conclusion.” Interest in things that are out in the galaxy was something born from Prakash’s early passion for stargazing. He says, “I love to look up the night sky and stare at these twinkling, bright lights; they’re so fascinating to me. As a child, I dreamed of being an astronomer. Then I started to be more specific – I wanted to learn the physics behind stars and other things in the universe; which led to my absorption with particle and nuclear physics. Then that led me to aerospace engineering because I want to build interstellar spaceships.” A student at John Muir’s Engineering and Environmental Science Academy, Prakash has participated in the Johns Hopkins Engineering Innovation summer program at Pasadena City College. He has also been actively involved with the school’s Solar Cup Team (a seven-month educational

program, sponsored by The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California). Of this year’s competition, held at Lake Skinner in Riverside County on May 13 to 15, he enthuses, “I learned a lot of hands-on skills and gained valuable experience working with my team. It’s exhilarating to be with a group of people who share a common scientific and engineering endeavor – these are friends who, like me, have big dreams.” It helps that Prakash has all his plans laid out to make ahis wishes come true. He reveals, “I’m going to attend Cal Poly Pomona because I believe it’s a strong engineering school. It offers more practical applications as well as teaches other methods of engineering, including astronomy. It will better prepare me for Masters and Doctorate degrees; I have already figured out what I need to do in order to be accepted to Cal Tech for graduate education.” Funded by a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Gates Millennium Scholarship was established in 1999 with the goal of developing leaders and removing financial bar-

riers to education for highperforming, low-income students. Prakash is John Muir High School’s seventh winner of this academic scholarship since 2005. Last year’s Muir HS winner, Kimberly Mejia, is currently at UC Berkeley studying engineering. Most scientists do not believe in a “Higher Being” who watches over us, mere mortals. But Prakash is certain that God has a hand in his good fortune. “I believe God gave me all the wonderful things I have. I feel really blessed because I know how much my education is going to cost,” Prakash says with conviction. Dr. Ben Aroyan, Prakash’s counselor, must have had tremendous confidence in him because he nominated Prakash for the Gates Scholarship. Judges for the prestigious foundation, likewise, must have believed in his potential. And whether it was an “Act of God” or his persuasive essays, or that the stars had all aligned for him to receive this much-coveted scholarship, he is most assuredly on a path to his intended destination.

Personal transportation and safety equipment are all allowed. All conditions are accepted, as broken transportation will be repaired. Mr. John Tallon, a community volunteer, donates his time, by fixing all the bikes to working condition and then driving them up to the reservation in July. Travis Chen, a co-chair member of SCAC, said that "these bikes will be of benefit to the White Mountain Apaches." The White Mountain Apaches reservation is extremely large and with donations they will be able to travel in a more efficient way. Monetary donations and clothing donations will not be allowed. SCAC hosts an autumn and a spring Money Drive, and also a Toy and Jacket Drive at the start of the Winter Season. Donations will be accepted until May 27. A Legacy of Women in Leadership

N

ow I know why there are so fewer women than men in the state legislature. After months of campaigning for state senate, I recognize it takes resiliency, tenacity, commitment, and 200 percent effort to be taken seriously as a female candidate. Running for elective office presents unique challenges for women who are raising families, pursuing careers, and/or advancing their education. It is not impossible, but it is very difficult. Fortunately, the opportunity to run for the office of senator in the 25th District comes at the right time in my life and career. You see, I have had a full career and my three sons are adults. March was Women’s Month and on Aug. 26, 2015, we celebrated the 95th anniversary of the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote and hold elected office. In the past 95 years, there have been great opportunities to continue to educate and embrace the power of the vote and its phenomenal impact on our lives and the lives

of our families. Women have played a critical role through their political voice and vote. I appreciate and value casting my vote for candidates who have integrity and proven leadership through collaboration. Women have fought and shown amazing courage to have their voices heard. As I study the history of elections to the California Legislature it is disheartening to see the dwindling number of capable women being elected. Of the current 120 California legislators serving, only 31 are women, with 13 of those being women of color. Nine of these women will term out in November 2016. This is in spite of women making up 50.3 percent of the state’s population. With California’s diverse population and the increasing number of women obtaining higher education, excelling in the workplace, and breaking glass ceilings, it is perplexing that women are underrepresented. Clearly, women’s voices and perspective make a difference, especially to strengthen our local schools and early education programs, create op-

portunities for good-paying careers, and fight for a more fair economy for our middle class. I admire and am inspired by women who made the difficult decision to serve the public through public office, especially our own Senator Carol Liu, who became the first Asian Pacific Islander elected to the senate in 2008. When she terms out in 2016, Liu will leave a legacy of education, human services, public safety, and environmental policies that benefits all Californians. I would not be the first African American woman elected to the legislature, but I do believe I would be the first woman public safety officer. With that comes another unique perspective that I can bring to discussions based on my experience in public safety, education, and community collaboration. I seek to follow in the footsteps of the accomplished women who have gone before me. - Phlunte’ Riddle, Pasadena resident and candidate for District 25 of the state senate.

A lot of adrenaline flowed as he smashed, shot, yelled, and tried to set a fire. It was a long, six-hour night, ending with a suicide. No officers or neighbors were injured. That was my first close encounter with police officers. Well there had been one brief one when I was reminded that a traffic light I drove through was very yellow. I forgave them for that one and the S.W.A.T. experience became the beginning of my growing relationship with the department. I became a volunteer. Over the years I have done many things for them and with them, from cleaning counter tops, doing office chores, attending training sessions, to seeing needs and making the connections for getting them met. Some of it has been fun, some has been challenging, some has been rewarding. Most has been all of the above. My role as a volunteer is also frightening - frightening because, over the years, I have come to know and to love many of the officers in the department. They are not

only police officers but they are sons, daughters, spouses, mommies, and daddies. They are my friends. Every time I see a “Black and White” with lights flashing or hear sirens screaming, my own muscles constrict. When I see an officer approaching a pulled-over vehicle in front of me, I find myself, as I pass, checking again in the rear-view mirror to be sure that officer is OK. The officer involved is very often one I hugged only minutes before and was reminded by the hard, rigid fabric of a bullet-proof vest that this was a loved one in jeopardy. Behind that vest lies a heart that is often soft and always vulnerable, both to the bullets of a gun and the bullets of life. Will some of the officers wind up involved in a front page scandal? Will some perform acts of heroism only to have the story buried on page 18? Modern media emphasizes the negative. You can bet your sweet “bippy” that if 2 percent are scandalous, you will not see much about the other 98 percent. Doesn't seem quite fair, does it?

expertise in restoring and expanding the garden, but he also helped garner and maintain community interest. Watanabe, along with a little help from his friends in Sierra Madre and community support over the years, has been instrumental in promoting what he believes was “ordained by God.” Watanabe told Sierra Madre Weekly in 2012 that he truly believes this project would never have happened “had it not been for the Lord.” The original Japanese garden built in 1931, was the effort of the parents of Japanese American students at the school. The carefully constructed and peaceful garden was then vandalized and completely destroyed by those who over-reacted to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. The sixth grade class of 1995 read about this part of Sierra Madre’s history and discovered an article in the

Los Angeles Times (October 1994) documenting the history of what was once a garden at their school, according to Natalie Sandoval who was a student in Helen Pontarelli’s class then. Upon reading the article, Sandoval and the students of Sierra Madre School decided to restore the garden/pond, and undertook a massive fund-raising and labor effort to do just that. The students held car washes, bake sales, wrote letters, and sold origami cranes, among other things, to fund the reconstruction. They also did the physical labor, digging the bridge out of the mud and excavating the garden. Watanabe became a central figure for the ambitious project and, as a landscape gardener, he designed the new garden and led the reconstruction. By Terry Miller Beloved Sierra Madre landscape artist Lew Watanabe passed away peacefully at his home in Wildomar on Thursday, May 19. His wife Joyce was at his side, as she has been their entire married life. Watanabe was named Sierra Madre’s 2010 Grand Marshal for the July Fourth Parade. According to his wife, Lew battled pancreatic cancer bravely with dignity and ever-present faith. One of Watanabe’s many projects of which he was most proud was the Pond and Garden of Goodwill at Sierra Madre School. “Issei” fathers of the two dozen Japanese-American children who attended the school in the 1920s had built a small garden at the elementary school as a gesture of goodwill to celebrate the completion of a new school building in 1930. Then, it had a very small fish pond, a bridge, a bonsai pine tree, as well as a stone lantern, according to an article published in The LA Times in the early 1990s. The Garden of Goodwill at Sierra Madre Elementary would be not complete without the mild-mannered and modest Lew Watanabe. Watanabe was one of those rare individuals who not only volunteered his time, money, and

and known for his sense of humor, generosity, joy for life, and big heart. He is survived by his father Andrew C. Lazzaretto, Sr.; wife Nan Russell Lazzaretto; siblings Michael (Beverly), Daniel (Kim), Teresa (Jose Sandoval), and John; children Anthony (Letitia), Mark (Sara), and Dominic (Stine); daughter-in-law Annamaria Burke; eight grandchildren; and countless nieces, nephews, cousins, family, and friends whose lives were touched by this humble, peaceful, and joy-filled man. Funeral services were held at the Church of the Incarnation at 1001 N. Brand Blvd. in Glendale on Saturday, May 21, 2016 at 11 a.m. Donations may be made in Andy’s memory to the City of Hope at cityofhope.org/donate.

Redondo Union Ends La Salle’s CIF Run by Jacob Bigley At first glance, an 8-1 scoreboard in the Redondo Union Seahawks’ (28-2 record and overall #1 seed) favor would imply a blowout; however the La Salle Lancers (20-8 record) left nine men on base in scoring position, which proved to be detrimental. The only run from the Lancers came in the bottom of the first, with runners on second and third, as a result of a wild pitch that scored Ethan Patrick (20). Redondo Union responded with three runs in the second inning, three runs in the fourth, and two more in the fifth, giving us the final score of 8-1. The Lancers only trailed the Seahawks 10-11 in total hits but could not find home plate. La Salle went through four different pitchers: Ryan Garcia (4 innings pitched, 6 runs, 6 strikeouts, and 4 walks); Grant Fosselman (faced 3 batters, 2 runs scored); Ryan Garcia (2 strikeouts, 1 run scored); and Brandon Jenkins, who pitched the SEE NEXT PAGE

last inning, earning 2 strikeouts. The Seahawks’ pitching was led by their junior starter Danny Zimmerman, verbal commit to the University of Michigan, who went six innings with 7 hits, 1 run, 6

strikeouts, and the win. Jason Dicochea came in at the start of the seventh inning and quickly ended the game with 2 strikeouts and a fly ball. After the game, Danny Zimmerman was asked about his perfor-

mance, stating, “I felt like I was getting some pretty good movement and fooling them a little bit … getting some bad swings back there.” Zimmerman spoke highly of the run support he received while on the mound: “I know

it’s always going to be there and just something I don’t even need to think about … top of our lineup has been solid all year and now the bottom (of the lineup), 7-8-9, got multiple hits and that’s what we need to keep rolling.”

(Left) Redondo Union’s Jason Dicochea (11) celebrates with his teammates as he crosses home plate, scoring the third run of the game in the top of the second inning. (Right) La Salle’s Ryan Garcia (57) strikes out a batter with bases loaded in the top of the first inning.

GROUND BREAKING FORECLOSURE RULING!

The California Supreme Court ruled on February 18, 2016 that a homeowner has the right to challenge his lender's authority to foreclose based upon void assignments of the loan to third parties. The high court expressly upheld an earlier California Appellate opinion called Glaski v Bank of America. This decision could set aside many foreclosures and/or obtain monetary damages, settle lawsuits with modifications and prevent foreclosures from happening in the first place. This decision will hopefully provide our firm with even more legal leverage to not only set aside many foreclosures and /or obtain money damages, but settle lawsuits with modifications and prevent foreclosures from happening in the first place. Monrovia’s One, Two Punch of Goebel and Ramos Proves to be a Knockout … So Far by Jacob Bigley On Tuesday, May 24, the Monrovia Wildcats faced off against Ganesha in the second round of the CIF Playoffs. Patrick Goebel threw another fantastic game against Ganesha, tallying 6 innings pitched, 10 strikeouts, 4 hits, 1 walk, and 0 runs. The Monrovia Wildcats will now face the Tahquitz Titans at home on Friday, May 27, at 3:15 p.m. The Wildcats have now had two consecutive shutouts in the first and second round of the CIF playoffs. Last week, Monrovia’s Isaiah Ramos started against Campbell Hall and threw 5 innings with 1 hit, 4 strikeouts, 5 walks, and 0 runs. Goebel threw the final two innings with 1 hit, 3 strikeouts, 1 walk, and no runs. This duo has proven to be recipe for success, along with fantastic hitting and fielding from their supporting Wildcats. Together, Ramos and Goebel have a combined record of 16-3 with 22 starts (11 each) and an earned run

average of .82. Goebel, a junior, who sustained a foot injury early in the year and has been cleared to pitch but not bat, has only registered seven at-bats all year. It is clear to see the pitcher’s limp as he takes the walk to the mound but he does not let

it affect his ability to field. It is like watching Curt Schilling in 2004, minus the bloody sock. Isaiah Ramos, the outspoken leader of the wildcats, has been having a fantastic senior year both on the mound and in the outfield. If you watch the Wildcat’s

dugout shortly before they take the field, you can hear Ramos scream “Line it up!” Isaiah proceeds to go down the line of his team mates and do, what I like to call, “The Bro Hug.” Hey, if it helps you win, keep doing it. Needless to say, these

two have been the backbone of the Wildcat’s great run this season and in CIF. If you ask either Ramos or Goebel how they manage to pitch a strong game, they never hesitate to give accolades to their teammates for their superb play in the field and at the plate.

It is rumored that Ramos will take the mound on Friday, May 27, against Tahquitz who went 11-4 in league and beat Sierra Vista in a high-scoring 9-8 win on Tuesday, May 24. Let us see if the “One, Two Punch” lands another knockout.
