BY TERRY MILLER The lines in the sand are drawn and next Tuesday, April 12, is decision day 2016 for Sierra Madre. What’s at stake? A lot. The potential loss of Utility User’s Tax (UUT) dollars could mean the beginning of the end for Sierra Madre’s tiny police department (SMPD) that has been plagued with a mass exodus of late. So much so, that the SMPD could not cover the city 24 hours and had to recruit Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department to cover the night patrols. The UUT is a tax on SEE PAGE 16

The April 12 Election! In 2008, the Sierra Madre City Council put the following item on the ballot for the people to vote on: "Measure U will temporarily increase the U.U.T. from 6 percent to 12 percent over a period of three years to raise additional General Fund revenue. This rate will decrease over time beginning in 2014, reverting back to the current 6 percent rate by 2016.” After the measure passed the council settled on the 10 percent rate. The city has tried to change the U.U.T. back to 10 percent starting in 2012. It failed! In 2014, the city tried again and it also failed! Now the city has spent a year trying to convince the people to put the 10 percent rate in place forever! Has the city tried to reduce spending knowing full well when the reductions were coming? The answer is no; they have instead increased spending. They have repeatedly

said, "We saved $2 million.” If this is true, then where is the evidence? The payroll has gone up, not down, so where are the savings? The only thing the people can do is to vote no, no, no on this increase. Also, why should anyone vote for the councilmembers who are running for re¬election when they are the ones that want the U.U.T. increase? The answer to that is to not vote for them at all. Instead, please write in the name of Barry Gold as a write-in candidate for Sierra Madre City Council. Then, vote for Barry and vote, “no” on the U.U.T. increase. Make the council live by the law that they made in the first place and make them live by their own words. Write in Barry Gold as a candidate for city council and vote for Barry and vote, “no” on the U.U.T. increase! -Sierra Madre Watchman

San Gabriel Police Department to Host ‘Coffee with a Cop’ On April 19, officers from the San Gabriel Police Department and community members will come together in an informal, neutral setting to discuss community issues, build relationships, and drink coffee. All community members are invited to attend. The event will be held from 8 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. on April 19, at KC Donuts located at 838 E. Mission Road in San Gabriel. Coffee with a Cop provides a unique opportunity for community members to ask questions and learn more about the work of the police department in San Gabriel’s neighborhoods. The majority of contacts law enforcement has with the public happen during emergencies or other emotional situations. Those situations are not always the most effective times to build lasting relationships

with the community and some community members may feel that officers are unapproachable on the street. Coffee with a Cop breaks down barriers and allows for a relaxed, one-onone interaction. Coffee with a Cop is a national initiative supported by The United States Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services. Similar events are being held across the country, as local police departments strive to make lasting connections with the communities they serve. The program aims to advance the practice of community policing through improving relationships between police officers and community members, one cup of coffee at a time. Please contact Lieutenant Brian Kott for any further questions at (626) 308-2835 or via email at BK076@sgpd.com.

Sign of the Changing Times in Arcadia By Terry Miller No the NFL has not come to Arcadia (phew!) however it is an easy comparison to make when to see the masssive new automotive showroom in Arcadia. Former Mayor George Fasching , who is never at a loss for words as we have experienced over the years, has brought a little levity to the madness of election

time. The popular car wash owner is giving a humorous shout out to the new Rusnak showroom slated to open later this year. The building which is perhaps the single largest development in Arcadia’s history will soon be selling Mercedes from the state of the art showroom which dwarfs the corner of Santa Clarita and Santa Anita. Paul Tanaka Found Guilty – Faces 15 Years in Federal Prison

Undersheriff Paul Tanaka was found guilty Wednesday of conspiracy and obstruction of justice for helping thwart a federal investigation of misconduct in Los Angeles county jails. A federal jury found Tanaka guilty of directing eight alleged co-conspirators in a scheme to foil a 2011 investigation into allegations of excessive force within the jail system. Tanaka will be sentenced on June 20. “This was Paul Tanaka’s operation,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Brandon Fox said in his closing argument, “He was in charge.” The defence, however, argued that it was actually ex-sheriff Lee Baca who “was in control of this entire situation.” During two days of testimony, Tanaka, 57, denied remembering details of his communications with his alleged co-conspirators - all of whom have been convicted previously in the case. Phone logs focusing on days in August and September of 2011 that were relevant to the case revealed about 70 calls between Tanaka and the alleged coconspirators, but only one between Tanaka and his then-boss, Fox said. Baca pleaded guilty in February to a charge of lying to investigators and is awaiting sentencing in May. Tanaka faces up to 15 years in federal prison. The conviction of former Undersheriff Paul Tanaka for charges of obstruction of justice marks an important moment in the history of violence and brutality that has characterized the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department for decades, according to a group called Dignity and Poer Now.org. “The conviction of the second most powerful official who brutally ran the largest jail system in the world is a historical victory not only for those who have been incarcerated in the county jails and for their loved ones, but for everyone who desires an end to state violence. However, Paul Tanaka’s conviction should not turn the page on corruption and misconduct in the Sheriff’s Department – instead it should continue to inform how the current sheriff, the county supervisors, and the yet to be functional Civilian Oversight Commission should pursue justice and transparency in the department.” “Dignity and Power

the red light at Duarte and Mayflower and he struck a vehicle headed south on Mayflower. The three elderly occupants in the vehicle were injured and were taken to a hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries. April 3

At 3:16 a.m., officers observed a vehicle driving erratically and with mechanical defects. The vehicle stopped in the 100 block of West Huntington and officers contacted the driver. The officers determined the driver had been drinking, and, after they completed their investigation, the subject was arrested for driving under the influence.

At 10:06 a.m., a vehicle burglary was reported at an apartment complex in the 600 block of Linwood. The victim parked his vehicle in the rear carport the day before at 2 p.m. When he returned to his vehicle the next morning at 9:50 a.m., he found his rear passenger window smashed out and his wallet missing. The investigation is continuing.

At 9:39 p.m., a residential burglary was reported in the 400 block of Bella Vista Drive. The home was broken into sometime between 5 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., while the resident was out. Several windows and a rear door were left unlocked. The home was ransacked. The victim is unsure of the loss and will contact police once it has been determined.

PASADENA

March 31 At about 6:07 p.m., Pasadena Special Enforcement Section (SES) officers conducted a probation search in the 2000 block of North Raymond Avenue. During the search, SES officers located a SKS (7.62mm) assault rifle. The rifle was equipped with a full highcapacity magazine. The suspect, a known local street gang member, was arrested without incident and booked at the Pasadena jail. This case is another example of the daily proactive police work conducted by the Pasadena Police Department. The efforts of the SES officers removed another dangerous firearm from our community. April 2

At about 1:51 p.m. Pasadena Police officers responded to the area of Villa Parke regarding calls of shots fired. On arrival officers talked with several witnesses who provided conflicting statements. Some of the witnesses said a vehicle drove by and shot at a group of individuals sitting along the east curb, Garfield Avenue, south of the

soccer field. Others stated the suspect(s) fired into the air. Nevertheless, PPD offices recovered expended shell casings at the scene. There was a youth soccer game in progress at the time of the incident. Fortunately, PPD officers did not locate any victims and it does not appear anyone associated with the game was the intended target. PPD will maintain a strong uniform presence in the park for the remainder of the afternoon. Our investigation is ongoing.

ARCADIA

March 31 At approximately 1:56 a.m., an officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle in the area of Huntington Drive and Gateway Avenue for making an illegal Uturn. Upon contacting the driver, the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol emitting from the driver. Through a series of tests, the officer determined the 39-year-old male from Texas was driving under the influence of an alcoholic beverage. The suspect was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking. Around 12:08 p.m., an officer responded to Macy’s at the Santa Anita Mall, 400 S. Baldwin Ave., regarding a petty theft report. A loss prevention specialist witnessed the suspect conceal numerous items in her stroller before exiting the store, failing to make payment. The 48-year-old female from Azusa was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

April 1 At about 12:05 a.m., an officer initiated a traffic stop on a bicyclist for riding northbound in southbound lanes of traffic without proper lighting near the intersection of First Avenue and Huntington Drive. During a consensual search of the subject’s backpack, the officer located a checkbook and mail that did not belong to him. The 23-yearold male from Altadena was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking. April 2

Around 8:21 p.m., an officer responded to Savers, 16 E. Live Oak Ave., regarding a theft report. Surveillance footage revealed two suspects worked in concert to switch out a watch while the employee was helping another customer. Both suspects fled the scene in a vehicle. The first suspect is described as a male, 35 to 39-years-old, 6-feet tall and heavy set. The second suspect is described as female, 30-years-old, 5-feet-3-inches tall and approximately 150 pounds. The suspect vehicle is described as a white older model compact car. The investigation is ongoing. At approximately 3:28 p.m., an officer responded to Arcadia Methodist Hospital, 300 W. Huntington Drive, regarding a subject who was causing a disturbance and refusing to leave. The officer noticed symptoms of alcohol intoxication and determined the suspect was unable to care for himself. The subject also had an outstanding misdemeanor warrant. He was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

Reader’s Response to Arcadia Mansionization Dear Editor: I have to laugh at this … where were all the No Arcadia people when us poor folk in Baja Arcadia were crying for help regarding the mansions. We were told, “that’s what you get for

not having home owner’s associations.” Who thinks of this crap? We are living in a small “community of homes,” kids riding horses bareback up and down El Monte Avenue. No, us poor folk never thought of, or most likely never heard of a home owner’s association. And now almighty No Arcadia is running around like chicken little, “the mansions

are coming, the mansions are coming!” The horse is out of the barn folks, welcome to No Arcadia’s world. Blame who you will, I’ve lived in Arcadia 45 years and can almost count city council members on one hand. I gave up years ago when I attended a council meeting and was told, “English will always be the dominate writing on store fronts.” Hell, today I don’t know if I’m walking into a mom pop store or a bordello. - Craig Bushey

Reader’s Concern: 210 Freeway Signage

rst presbyterian church 101 e. foothill blvd. | 626-358-3297 | fpcmonrovia.com

Dear Editor: The attached freeway signage was taken at Hastings Ranch in Pasadena at the corner of Foothill Boulevard and Rosemead. Traveling east on Foothill, right in front of the 76 gas station (Steer N’ Ale restaurant). The arrow pointing straight for Freeway 210 East is terribly misleading, because

there is no ramp to 210 East anywhere ahead (even crossing Michillinda and beyond).

I would like to inform the authorities, but do not know who is in charge (the city, the police, the county, or Caltrans). Thank you, - Peter El PASADENA

Letter to the Editor Regarding Homelessness

Dear Editor: I have been listening to discussions of the homeless problem in LA for many

years. There seems to be no solution. But what if we could move the homeless into our various parks around the city? Parks seem like a more livable environment. And for most of us, the homeless would be out of the way. Build more parks! Very cordially, - Frank W. Pfeiffer

Reader’s Concern with Integrity of Upcoming Arcadia Election

Dear Editor: Is a follow up coming on influence peddling in Arcadia? Nevis Capital and Tae Jen Lee have given over $20,000 to elect Bob Harbicht. They have paid for hit pieces on candidate April Verlato, anti-Measure A, and connections (I believe) to Sho Tay to stir up trouble with misinformation sent only to ethnic Chinese residents in Arcadia. Councilman Tom Beck read excerpts from the translated email at the April 5 council meeting

Well, aren’t Nevis Capital and Tae Jen Lee the ones who are bankrolling the city council trip to China in 2015, solicited and orchestrated by John Wuo, until it was outed? How deep are the ties to current and former city officials? Where does all that money lead? - Concerned Citizen ARCADIA

Reader’s Response to Arcadia Mansionization

Dear Editor: Well it’s happened. The city has found a way to keep the citizens of Arcadia from voting on mansionization, knowing that if the citizens decided that they wanted more reasonable housing rules, it may cost them revenue. They found a way for the city clerk to nullify on a technicality. What is the city so afraid of? The city should be run for the citizens, not for the city coffers. Another reason to vote yes on Measure A. - Gino Roncelli, concerned citizen

hat happens to the characters of a play when the curtains close? Certainly, the actors go home and we, the audience, leave the theatre with a hopefully satisfying experience, but, once we have heard their stories, the characters, especially mediocre ones, are often dismissed and forgotten, filed away like every other character we have watched on stage, treated like cigar smoke that simply drifts away after one enjoyable puff. A great theatre experience, however, haunts us, with characters becoming ghosts who materialize in our dreams and thoughts long after we have left the theatre. A Noise Within (ANW) accomplishes this with their latest mesmerizing play “Six Characters in Search of an Author.” The play, penned by Italian dramatist Luigi Pirandello, and directed by Geoff Elliott and Julia Rodriguez-Elliott, serves up not only an interesting narrative and compelling characters, but also an enthralling meta-theatre experience in which art is personified and we are reminded that great theatre is more than just smoke. First, a brief summary: the play starts with a metafictive world in which ANW actors Robertson Dean, Susan Angelo, and June Caryl, as well as other fellow thespians, play fictional versions of themselves rehearsing “Our Town” for the 25th anniversary celebration of the theatre company. As they bicker about the tediousness of their task and poke fun at the company’s creative directors, a group of (fictional?) characters eerily manifest on the stage. Their

problem, they explain to the baffled cast, is that they are in search of an author who will listen and tell their tragic story on the stage. But really, their problem is that they are an incredibly dysfunctional family whose story is so tragic that their original author could not finish them. With effective visual tricks and aesthetics, the play from beginning to end offers a tense and mystical tone as the perplexed fictional cast, just like us in the audience, tries to piece together what really is going on. The mystery about who these characters are and the story they have to tell seduces us until the very end when we are left wondering how the company was able to leave such a lingering impact on us. The performances delivered by everyone in the cast create a perfect balance, with Dean, Angelo, and Carryl, along with their supporting meta-actors, giving much needed levity that contrasts

the seriousness of the six fictional characters led by Geoff Elliott, who plays the Stepfather. Dominating the stage is Allison Elliott, who presents a beautifully manic Stepdaughter out to humiliate the Stepfather and seek retribution for those who have scorned her. Also, it is clear that this theatre company has become quite familiar with one another over the years, melding together in perfect harmony and resulting in a production that feels very authentic. In short, “Six Characters in Search of an Author” is an enthralling theatre experience that will give you the shivers (in a very, very good way) and is not to be missed, especially for those who frequent this company. “Six Characters in Search of an Author” will play until May 14 at ANW, 3353 E. Foothill Blvd. Single tickets are $44 and can be purchased through their website www. anoisewithin.org or by calling (626) 356-3100, extension 1.

‘Armenia, My Love’ to Screen in Pasadena April 15 Beginning on Friday April 15, 2016, “Armenia, My Love” will also screen in Pasadena at the Laemmle Playhouse 7 located at 673 East Colorado Boulevard, 91101 as well as at the Laemmle NoHo 7 which is located at 5240 Lankershim Boulevard in North Hollywood, 91601. A special star-studded premiere of the film, followed by a riveting Q & A with the filmmakers and cast, will take place on

Thursday April 14, 2016 at the Pasadena theater. Tickets are available for purchase for the exclusive premiere at http://www. laemmle.com/theaters/6. The timely release of the emotionally-riveting feature film that recognizes the horrific circumstances faced by more than one million innocent victims of the Armenian Genocide of 1915, nearly coincides with the 101 year anniversary of the

Armenian Genocide. “While Armenia My Love does expose the harsh realities faced by the entire Armenian People who were violently ripped from their homeland,” said Angelson, who felt compelled to produce this film by her many Armenian friends and connections and the powerful story they had to share. “It is Armenia, My Love’s strong messages of hope, love, faith, perseverance and strength

that I wanted to prevail.” Also proving to be a vital player in the film is the awe-inspiring artwork created by esteemed Romanian artist Paula Matei which adds yet another layer of depth to “Armenia, My Love.” Another distinction, adding potency to “Armenia, My Love,” is the way it is masterfully shot and edited with happy scenes in color fading to black and white during the genocide.

Originally known as just The Dollmaker’s, a tribute to the 1984 Jane Fonda film of the same name, the store began as a small 300 square foot space dedicated to high quality, handmade dolls and supplies. In response to a declining doll market, the store expanded its horizons to sell toys and in 1991, when they moved to their current location, it became the Dollmaker’s Kattywompus. The store carries a mix of retro classics and newer toys hand-selected by Cindy, store manager. “We have access to Mattel and Fischer Price, but it’s not our market. We mostly deal with smaller toy companies,” says Cindy, “once a year I go to a toy convention in Vegas. I look for products that make me say, ‘ooh, look at that,’ if I’m not feeling that, it’s just not for us. We have to look for things that not everybody else has.” In addition to these new, unique products from up-and-coming, smaller companies, they also have all the more traditional toy staples that you can no longer find anywhere else, such as marbles, toy dinosaurs, stuffed animals, yoyo’s, puzzles, and spud guns, to name a few. chains is the laid-back, family environment. The sisters truly love what they do, especially Cindy who has a passion for toys. She treats her customers like family, knows all the children by name, and considers herself an extended grandmother. The store prides itself on being warm, welcoming, and encourages children to come inside and play. There are five or six play stations set up throughout the floor space, the effects of which are twofold. Firstly, the store serves as a community playground, many parents come in saying their children did not want to go to the park, instead they wanted to come and play in the Dollmaker’s Kattywompus. Secondly, Cindy receives instant feedback on products directly from her little consumers. She is able to gauge interest and keep up with the kids’ trends, which seem to be in constant flux. The Dollmaker’s Kattywompus is much more than a toy store. In addition to their diverse collection of toys, they have several themed accessories, “silly socks are in big time right now, socks are not toys. You’re at work, dressed up, but nobody knows what you’re wearing under the slacks, you might have Godzilla socks on,” reveals Cindy, “Star Wars purses were also huge. I had no idea there were that many female Star Wars fans, but I was wrong.” They also carry books, science kits, some musical instruments, Jennifer’s very own line of baked goods called Auntie Jen’s, and, in spirit of their roots, they still carry some doll supplies (shoes, wigs, stands, etc.). The Dollmaker’s Kattywompus also offers music and needling classes. Jennifer teaches private or group lessons in guitar, fiddle, ukulele, autoharp, mandolin, Zills, hammered and fretted dulcimers, middle-eastern percussion, and Irish drums, among others. Unlike many music studios, no contract commitment is required; just give Cindy a call to sign up. If you swing by the store on Friday nights, you can catch their weekly sidewalk concerts where you will hear a variety of international and folk music performed by the Kattywompus String Band, the inspiration for the second half of the store’s name. The Dollmaker’s Kattywompus is located at 412 S. Myrtle Ave. in the heart of Old Town Monrovia. ChapCare Helps Expand Access to Health Insurance The 2015-16 Covered California open enrollment period recently came to a close. During this year’s open enrollment period, ChapCare enrolled almost 500 residents of the San Gabriel Valley into health insurance; of which, approximately 47 percent enrolled into a Covered California qualified health plan, and 53 percent obtained coverage through Medi-Cal. ChapCare also helped over 130 people renew their coverage. ChapCare will continue to enroll people into health insurance to increase access to coverage in the San Gabriel Valley. If you do not have health

insurance it is still not too late to enroll. Individuals who qualify can enroll in Medi-Cal or the County’s My Health LA Program year-round. For Covered California, some individuals may qualify to enroll during the Special Enrollment period as a result of losing their job, getting divorced or married, having/ adopting a baby, gaining citizenship, turning 26-years-old, or losing their health coverage. ChapCare’s knowledgeable Certified Enrollment Counselors (CEC’s) can help you determine if you are eligible, provide education on your coverage options, and help you enroll in a plan of your choice.

ChapCare offers health insurance screening and enrollment services at three locations: 1. Lime Health Center - 513 E. Lime Ave., Suite 102, Monrovia. Tuesday and Thursday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., (626) 486-9729. 2. Del Mar Health Center – 3160 E. Del Mar Blvd., Suite 200, Pasadena. certain utility bills. A UUT may be imposed by a city or county on the consumption of utility services. The tax is levied by the city or county on the consumer of the utility services, collected by the utility as a part of its regular billing procedure, and then remitted to the city or county. Sierra Madre has had a UUT since 1993. Today, Sierra Madre residents and businesses pay an 8 percent UUT on electricity, gas, telephone (including cell phone and long distance), trash (sanitation/solid waste), cable television, water, and sewer. At the current UUT rate of 8 percent, the city’s fiscal year 2015-2016 budget estimates a General Fund deficit of $530,000. At a 6 percent UUT rate, the deficit grows to $944,000. A 6 percent UUT will require the city council to cut the current General Fund by 11 percent, (another $1 million) on top of the $2 million cuts made in the past five years. On April 12, 2016, voters will consider Measure UUT to increase the UUT to 10 percent beginning on July 1, 2016. The measure will require 50 percent plus-one of the “yes” vote to increase the UUT rate to 10 percent. If the measure fails, the UUT rate

will fall to 6 percent. The polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on April 12. The Help America Vote Act (HAVA) states that individuals registering to vote for the first time in the state/ jurisdiction must provide either a valid California driver's license or state ID card number. Applicants who do not have either can provide the last four digits of their Social Security number. If the voter provides a driver's license or state ID number that can be matched to a state record, then the voter will not be required to show ID when she/he votes. If a person registers by mail, has not previously voted in an election for federal office, and: - Votes in person: a photo ID or a document that indicates the voter's name and residence address must be presented. - Votes by mail: a copy of a photo ID or a document with both the voter's name and residence address must be presented. Here’s where the candidates stand on the issues: - Barry Gold: “My wife Judy and I moved to Sierra Madre four-and-a-half years ago from Arcadia where we

saw firsthand what can happen to neighborhoods when you have a development free-for-all. That is why I am so passionate about preserving Sierra Madre and major factor in deciding to run for city council. “I have been at the forefront of the effort to control over-development in Sierra Madre. I was one of the original supporters of the Preserve Sierra Madre coalition. Over the last two years, no one has attended more planning commission and city council meetings and spoken up in support of preserving the character of our village of the Foothills than I have. “I supported the General Plan Update, the code changes lowering maximum allowable floor areas and CUP thresholds, the approval of the Demolition Moratorium to protect our historic properties. “If I am elected to the city council I will be a strong and consistent advocate for continued historic preservation, stopping over-development, preventing mansionization, and protecting our open spaces. “Preservation is not the only issue that I feel strongly about. Judy and I are supporters of the library and

the fire/paramedic department. We are subscribers to the paramedic program and have donated to the fire department and the library. “As a member of the revenue committee I recommended a 9 percent UUT rate with a sunset clause. I want some of the UUT funds to be used to make more infrastructure improvements. So that I can help with these and other issues and better protect Sierra Madre

from inappropriate development I ask for your support. Please write in my name on your ballot when you vote on April 12.” - John Harabedian, 34, occupation: criminal prosecutor - “I am running for re-election because there is important work to be done that requires experienced leadership. As your councilmember, I have worked the past four years protecting Sierra Madre in the face of challenges relating to the city’s budget, water supply, and aging infrastructure. The next four years will require continued diligence on all of these fronts. Sierra Madre will remain a safe, cost-effective, and full-service city as long as we, as a community, continue to demand quality public services, while providing the necessary resources to provide such services. As your councilmember, I will continue to maintain the city’s high level of public safety, restore the city’s aged infrastructure, and protect the city’s independent water supply. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at jharabedian@ cityofsierramadre.com.” - John Capoccia, 61, occupation: “incumbent as your mayor and 32 year resi-

dent of this wonderful town. I want to ensure that Sierra Madre retains its distinctive character and charm. Having raised three children here with my wife Marta, I deeply appreciate the many attributes that make our town special. During the past four years, I’ve provided strong leadership, have demonstrated sound analytical skills and have collaborated effectively with my fellow council members to: fight over-development by completing the General Plan update and implementing sensible measures to preserve our small-town character; halt the degradation of our water supply, and implement steps to secure its long-term viability; ensure that Sierra Madre’s citizens get the most for their hard-earned tax dollars; ensure that our city government is transparent and open, where citizens work with their elected officials and city staff to manage the present and chart our future. Much remains to be done, especially to stabilize our finances and infrastructure. Working together, we can overcome our challenges. I am honored to serve you on Sierra Madre’s City Council, and I thank you in advance for your support.”

Maranatha High School Board of Trustees Announces New Head of School The board of trustees of Maranatha High School is pleased to announce that Dr. Steven Sherman has accepted an offer to become the next head of school, beginning in the 2016-2017

school year. Dr. Sherman has spent over 30 years as a high school administrator, teacher, and coach. The last several years, Dr. Sherman has served as the head of the upper school for Rancho

Solano Preparatory School in Scottsdale, Ariz. Prior to that, he spent 15 years at St. Margaret’s Episcopal School in San Juan Capistrano in roles of increasing responsibility over his tenure: math

instructor, senior dean of students, and math department chair, as well as committee involvement of admissions, academic affairs, STEM Task Force co-leader, and as a member of the upper school leadership team. Board Chair Mike Bollenbacher remarked, “We are thankful that God has called Steve to Maranatha, and we believe he is uniquely qualified to lead Maranatha at this time. He is a man of deep Biblical faith and a proven educational leader with exceptional experience, personal qualities, and a passion for high-quality evangelical Christian education.” Upon the retirement of Dr. David Gyertson in the Spring of 2015, the board of trustees appointed the interim head of school, Dr. Richard Riesen, and began a national search for Maranatha’s next head of school. After an extensive search process, the board and advisory committee interviewed finalists in January and February, and the board voted unanimously to appoint Dr. Sherman after the interviews were completed. Search Committee Chair Michele VanRiper shared, “We were incredibly blessed to have had Laura Coverstone and Ed Poff of JobfitMatters direct our search for a new head of school. Their passion, commitment and attention to detail were evident in every step of the process.” Dr. Sherman received his master’s and educational doctorate degrees from Azusa Pacific University. Steve is married to Karen, and they together enjoy five grown children. Of his appointment, Sherman commented, “I always strive, through my servant leadership style, to live a lifestyle pleasing and honoring to God and to be a school leader governed and shaped by the Bible. Jesus has given me a heart for adolescents; I enjoy their presence, energy, and curiosity. Each day, I continue to learn new things about life and myself through my interactions with high school students. I am excited to become a long-standing member of the Maranatha family.” At the board’s request, Dr. Sherman will be on campus periodically to advise on current administrative

Celebrating its 50th Anniversary last year, Maranatha High School was founded in 1965 to establish a college preparatory high school predicated upon biblical principles and an uncompromising commitment to Jesus Christ. Six Basic Steps to Legacy Planning By Jean Koehler

Ameriprise Financial Advisor

W

hat long-term impact do you want to have on the people and causes that are important to you? Legacy questions are tough and estate planning, an essential part of documenting your intentions, can be complex. One way to get the process started is to consider the following basic steps: 1. An updated will: Your will is a legal document that spells out your wishes about who will inherit specific assets after your death. A properly drafted will can play a critical role in minimizing your estate’s exposure to taxes. If you should die without a legally binding will in place, courts may end up making decisions about who benefits from your estate, regardless of your best intentions. Be sure to review your will regularly. 2. Owned property: If you are married and own property you intend to gift, check state laws to see how regulations may affect your estate. In some states, property owned prior to marriage can be treated as separate property belonging to just one spouse. In other states, called “Community Property” states, all property acquired prior to or during marriage is considered owned by both spouses. Review your property and make sure it is set up within your estate to benefit your chosen recipient(s). 3. Beneficiary statements: Review your ben-

eficiary designations, and make sure they align with your wishes. Check your beneficiaries for retirement plans (401(k)s, 403(b)s, etc., IRAs, bank accounts, and insurance policies. Keep in mind that beneficiaries you name on these accounts take precedence over those named in a will. It is important to regularly review beneficiaries, particularly after major life changes such as marriage, the birth of children or grandchildren, divorce, etc. 4. Health care directive and living will: No matter your age, it is important to be prepared for unexpected turns in your health, either through accident, illness, or for other reasons. This includes having a health care directive that provides guidance on the extent of the medical treatment you wish to receive based on your condition. Check with your doctor or other health care providers to make sure they are agreeable with the terms you intend to include. 5. Power of attorney: You should consider empowering an individual to make decisions on your behalf if circumstances arise that prevent you from doing so. Designating a person to be a “durable” power of attorney means they can act as your agent, making medical and/or financial decisions for you when needed. 6. Digital accounts: A new concern is to make sure loved ones know how to find all required infor-

mation, including passwords, to access your online accounts. This may include your financial accounts, household accounts (i.e.: energy, cell phone, cable company), and social media accounts. Be sure to consult with an attorney for assistance in creating the necessary documentation for your estate plan. Your financial advisor can review your estate goals to assure that your legacy intentions are consistent with your overall financial strategy. Jean D. Make Us Laugh By Dorothy Denne

O

ur economy is a mess, our health system is major sick, gasoline prices are outrageous, mass unemployment is on the horizon, our personal space is being overrun, identity theft is rampant, the water supply is diminishing, and global warming is changing our world. I am told, "make us laugh, Dorothy." Well yeah. Would you also like me to kiss a few frogs so you can watch them turn into handsome princes? I tried that once when I was a kid because my rotten cousin told me it would work. All I got was frog slime on my hands and lips. He got clobbered with my shoe. Actually, that was kind of funny. My cousin was a tall, skinny drink of water who could run really fast. I was short and round, and could probably roll faster than I could run, but I had frog slime on me. I was motivated. He had to explain the bruises to his mom, who then promptly used a cream paddle to put some more on a part of his anatomy usually

used for seating. I got a good laugh out of that. He was the same one who told me the carpenter ants would carry me away. Yeah, a good laugh. Now I am faced with another non-laugh situation. My computer is arguing with me. But, on the bright side, I have a young neighbor who is a computer whiz. So, let us see what we can do. Let us have some senior talk: - Three old guys out walking. First one says, "Windy, isn't it?" Second one says, "No it's Thursday!" Third one says, "So am I. Let's go get a beer." - A man was telling his neighbor, "I just bought a new hearing aid. It cost me four thousand dollars, but it's state-of-the-art. It's perfect.” "Really," answered the neighbor, "what kind is it?" "Twelve thirty." - Morris, an 82-year-old man, went to the doctor to get a physical. A few days later, the doctor saw Morris walking down the street with a gorgeous young lady on his

arm. At his next appointment, the doctor greeted Morris with, "You're really doing great, aren't you?" Morris replied, "Just doing what you said doctor, ‘get a hot mama and be cheerful.’” The doctor said, "I didn't say that. I said you got a heart murmur. Be careful." - An elderly gent was invited to his old friend's home for dinner one evening. He was impressed by the way his buddy preceded every request to his wife with endearing terms - honey, my love, darling, sweetheart, pumpkin, etc. The couple had been married almost 70 years and, clearly, they were still very much in love. While the wife was in the kitchen, the man leaned over and said to his host, "I think it's wonderful that after all these years you still call your wife those loving pet names." The old man hung his head, "I have to tell you the truth," he said, "I forgot her name about 10 years ago." Did you laugh? Monrovia, a dry city.

What Can You do During National Autism Awareness Month? Nearly a quarter century ago, the Autism Society launched a nationwide effort to promote autism awareness, inclusion and self-determination for all, and assure that each person with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is provided the opportunity to achieve the highest possible quality of life. This year we want to go beyond simply promoting autism awareness to encouraging friends and collaborators to become partners in a movement toward acceptance and appreciation. For over 50 years the Autism Society has worked in communities (both large and small) to ensure their actions through services and programming, in an attempt to support all individuals living with autism. The Society hopes to ensure acceptance and inclusion in schools and communities that result in true appreciation of the unique aspects of all people. They want to get one step closer to a society where those with ASD are truly valued for their unique talents and gifts. National Autism Awareness Month (NAAM) represents an excellent opportunity to promote autism awareness, autism acceptance, and to draw attention to the tens of thousands facing an autism diagnosis each year.

How is it celebrated? - Presidential/Congressional declarations. - Online events and activities. - Local events and activities through affiliates. - Partner opportunities. What can I do? - Download the NAAM poster and distribute to schools, libraries and community centers in your neighborhood. - Recognize someone who is affected by autism and share your nomination on social media. - Sign up for e-newsletter Autism Matters to continue sharing ideas on how to make a better world for autism here. - Share your experience/ stories with NAAM or autism with us! - Put on the Puzzle! The Autism Awareness Puzzle Ribbon is the most recognized symbol of the autism community in the world. Autism prevalence is now one in every 68 children in America. Show your support for people with autism by wearing the Autism Awareness Puzzle Ribbon – as a pin on your shirt, a magnet on your car, a badge on your blog, or even your Facebook profile picture – and educate folks on the potential of people with autism! To learn more about or to purchase the Autism Awareness

Puzzle Ribbon for your shirt, car, locker or refrigerator visit: www.autism-society.org/ about-the-autism-society/ history/autism-awarenessribbon. - Connect with your neighborhood. Many Autism Society local affiliates hold special events in their communities throughout the month of April. But if you cannot find an event that suits you just right, create your own! - Watch a movie. Did you know that something that seems as simple as going to the movies is not an option for many families affected by autism? The Autism Society is working with AMC Theatres to bring special-needs families Sensory Friendly Films every month. - Donate to the Autism Society: Help improve the lives of all impacted by autism with a financial gift to the Autism Society. Every dollar raised by the Autism Society allows us to improve the capabilities and services of our over 100 nationwide affiliates, provide the best national resource database and contact center specializing in autism, and increase public awareness about autism and the day-to-day issues faced by individuals with ASD. - Photo Courtesy Hepingting (CC BY SA 2.0)

GROUND BREAKING FORECLOSURE RULING! The California Supreme Court ruled on February 18, 2016 that a homeowner has the right to challenge his lender's authority to foreclose based upon void assignments of the loan to third parties. The high court expressly upheld an earlier California Appellate opinion called Glaski v Bank of America. This decision could set aside many foreclosures and/or obtain monetary damages, settle lawsuits with modifications and prevent foreclosures from happening in the first place. This decision will hopefully provide our firm with even more legal leverage to not only set aside many foreclosures and /or obtain money damages, but settle lawsuits with modifications and prevent foreclosures from happening in the first place. NFL Players Give Back to the Monrovia and Duarte Community By Jennifer Boone Michael Harris, offensive guard for the Minnesota Vikings; Eric Rogers, receiver for the San Francisco 49ers; and Darius Reed, sports trainer for Stanford University Athletics, returned to their community to host a Free All Ages Football Camp at Duarte High School for surrounding communities. London Lee and Theresa Barnes and the Monrovia/Duarte Junior All American Football coaches and staff (aka Duarte Jr. Falcons) also contributed to this event that was held on Saturday, March 26. The Junior All American organization was instrumental in preparing the NFL players for professional football. The camp focused on proper fundamentals and techniques of defensive and offensive positions for girls and boys. The players stressed the importance of education over sports. The players gave the youth 100 large boxes of pizza, autographed t-shirts, and shoe laces. The youth left the football field with, enthusiasm, confidence in football, and the importance of education. More importantly, the youth knew that the NFL players cared about them and showed the children how important it is to give back to community organizations that invested and prepared players for NFL football or universities.
