Arcadia’s Election Picks Up Steam

Clockwise: April Verlato, Burton Brink, Paul van Fleet, Sheng Chang, Peter Amundson and Bob Harbicht are vying for two council seats.

BY TERRY MILLER At last Wednesday’s candidates’ forum, Measure A,

which could repeal the Utility User’s Tax (UUT) and the Saving Arcadia Ballot Initiative - rational development stand-

ards on new construction - dominated the questions from the audience at the Arcadia Library.

Arcadia Gold Line Welcome BY SUSAN MOTANDER While the official opening ceremony for the Gold Line will take place at 10 a.m. at the Duarte/ City of Hope Station, Arcadia will also be celebrating the occasion with its own celebration at its own station at the corner of First Avenue and Santa Clara Street. The festivities will kick off at 11 a.m. with a ribbon cutting

ceremony, but the family fun will continue until 3 p.m. Arcadia promises lots of family fun with face painting, balloon art, and a model train exhibit. There will even be kiddie train rides and, of course, rides on the Gold Line Extension will be free that day. In addition, there will be community booths with information about local groups (be sure to visit the

city’s booth for a chance to win a 30-day Metro Pass). There will be lots of raffles and giveaways at the booths. Food vendors from local eateries will be on hand as well and all this will be accompanied by music from the group Cold Duck. There are only 300 parking places at the station, but there are plenty of bike racks and lockers at the station as well.

Concerning the UUT repeal, it was unanimous among the candidates that they would vote “no” on Measure

Receiving Stolen Property Arrests Aided by Identification of Items and Social Media

On Monday, Feb. 21, officers of the Arcadia Police Department conducted a traffic stop and arrested four people after finding numerous items of what was believed to be stolen property in their car. The items included a number of purses, jewelry, laptops, phones, iPads, and more. Finding a name engraved on one item, officers

confirmed some of the items had been stolen in a Rancho Palos Verdes residential burglary the day prior. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office filed felony charges of Receiving Stolen Property on two adults and one juvenile female. The two female adults are Daijah D. Ellsworth, age 19, and Rickeira T. Pearson,

age 20, both of Los Angeles. The fourth arrestee, an adult male, was released from custody after charges were declined. Residential burglaries know no boundary and while many go unsolved, it is important to take steps to assist in the recovery of property SEE PAGE 17
