7-Year-Old Girl’s Birthday Wish: ‘Help the Homeless’
During the holiday season, Temple Station participated in Operation Warmth, a project gathering warm coats with the intention of providing warmth to the homeless population of Los Angeles County. Temple City resident Kayla (7-years-old) and her family heard of the project. Kayla and her family have been advocating for the homeless by providing food and assistance to those they
saw in need. Kayla had a wish for homelessness to end and after seeing a homeless person in the cold, wanted to, at a minimum, provide the warmth of a blanket. Kayla said she did not want gifts for her birthday, instead she asked for blankets for the homeless. Kayla's mother contacted the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Sergeant Kennison, SEE PAGE 12
Testing Irregularities Found at Sierra Madre Elementary What Is Going on at PUSD? BY TERRY MILLER In 2011, Roosevelt Elementary School in Pasadena had its federal Blue Ribbon nomination rescinded due to an administrative test-taking error that was reported in October of 2011. District officials called it “an honest mistake,” back then.
However, after an exhaustive effort to get the truth , local Attorney Dale Gronemeier filed public records request(s) from PUSD and additionally sent a letter to Superintendent McDonald regarding Roosevelt and the ongoing publicity at Madison regarding the teacher exodus as a direct result of an alleged bully of a principal who was
appointed. In both cases, materials requested from Gronemeier have either mysteriously been lost or found not to be relevant, according to records this paper has read. Now, attention is turning to Sierra Madre Elementary School which is under public scrutiny regarding the test irSEE PAGE 12
Sierra Madre Weekly learned last week that the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department will be entering into a contract with the City of Sierra Madre for temporary deputy patrol services between Feb. 28 and June 30. The news came swiftly after Arcadia's City Council last week turned down Sierra Madre’s request for assistance. Deputies will patrol the foothill city streets between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. According to numerous sources, the 12-hour shift contract approved by the Sheriff’s Department is under review by Sierra Madre’s city attorney, and will probably be on the next Sierra Madre council meeting agenda for Feb. 23. Just in time for the service to begin that following Sunday, Feb. 28. A phone call to the Sheriff’s Department’s Contracts Law Services confirmed that a contract has been drawn up and executed and is now under review with Sierra Madre’s city attorney. Lieutenant Squire told Sierra Madre Weekly that a contract has been drawn and is under consideration and as far as he knows, is in the hands of city SEE PAGE 13

Council Adjourns Meeting in Honor of Karen Meyer - Advocate for Wilderness Preserve By Susan Motander The Monrovia City Council adjourned its regular meeting on Tuesday in honor of Karen Meyer, a local real estate broker as an active advocate for the Hillside Wilderness Preserve. She passed away peacefully on January 17, surrounded by family. She was 72. She became well known to the residents of Monrovia in the late 1990s when there was a proposal to build a large development in the foothills above the city. Meyer quickly became one of the leaders of the movement to prevent or severely limit the development. The outcome of this movement were the two ballot measures, one to create the Hillside Wilderness Preserve and the other to issue the bonds to pay for the land. Meyer also wrote a weekly real estate column for the local paper, and every May, she enjoyed giving tours of Monrovia’s grand old homes for the Monrovia Historic Preservation Group. She produced and hosted “Living in Monrovia” for the cable channel, KGEM, and re-

ceived national recognition for her work in Washington, DC. Meyer was born on March 5, 1943, in Hamburg, Germany. Her parents were professional entertainers, and she followed in their
footsteps as “Germany’s Youngest Performer.” She toured nationally and her talents included demanding acrobatics as well as reciting monologues in several regional dialects. During her teenage
years, she immersed herself in her hometown’s vibrant music scene, where Englishspeaking bands such as the Beatles played nightly. She loved rock and roll, Elvis and New Orleans Jazz. She founded Mardi Gras, a popular club for local youth. At 18, she came to America and joined her family in Hartford, Connecticut. She worked as an executive assistant at Aetna and Colt Patent Firearms and married Karsten Meyer. In 1966 they moved to California. She enjoyed her job in downtown Los Angeles, supporting her husband’s growing business, and raising their three children. When Meyer earned her real estate license, she found her professional calling. She became a top-producing broker and enjoyed building relationships with colleagues and clients. Her career spanned three decades as an agent at Baldwin Realty, L & C Better Homes and Gardens, and Red Carpet. Meyer valued education. She graduated with an A.A. from Pasadena City College, a B.S. in Real Estate, Finance and Law, as well as
a Master of Science in Economics from Cal Poly Pomona. Her thesis focused on the changing market structure of the residential real estate sales industry. In her free time, she enjoyed organizing outings to the Hollywood Bowl, attending events from the World Affairs Council, dancing on New Year’s Eve, watching fireworks on 4th of July, and traveling extensively throughout the United States and abroad. She went everywhere from China to Scotland, Russia to Monaco, Argentina to New Zealand and countless other places. She always had a sense of adventure. Meyer is survived by her three children, Andrew, Amber and Stephanie, and their spouses; four grandchildren; her beloved aunt, Helga; Karsten Meyer; extended family and many friends. A celebration of Karin Meyer’s life will be held on at 3 p.m. on March 12 at Santa Anita Church, 226 W. Colorado Blvd., Arcadia, CA. For more details, contact KarinMeyerService@gmail. com.

PASADENA Feb. 10 At 3:58 p.m., Pasadena Police Motor Officer P. Klotz observed a traffic violation in the vicinity of Glenarm Street and El Molino Avenue. Officer Klotz attempted to stop the motorist; however, the suspect driver failed to yield and a vehicle pursuit was initiated. As officers began to contain the area, a resident in the 900 block of South Madison Avenue reported the suspect vehicle in her driveway. Officers began searching the area of the abandoned vehicle and subsequently located the suspect driver hiding in a nearby home (the suspect had entered the house unlawfully). The female passenger was arrested near the abandoned vehicle. As it turns out, the vehicle was reported stolen from our community. At 4:04 p.m., Pasadena Police officers responded to the 1000 block of South Euclid Avenue regarding a possible residential burglary. The victim was asleep when he heard noises in his home. He investigated the source
of the noises and discovered that some of his property was missing. The victim notified Pasadena Police and officers arrived quickly. While checking the area, officers saw a vehicle occupied by six people. They contacted the subjects and subsequently linked them to the burglary. All six suspects were arrested without incident. Four adult suspects were booked at the Pasadena jail and two juveniles were released to their parents. Feb. 12
At 12 a.m., Pasadena Police officers responded to the 30 block of North Raymond Avenue regarding a sexual assault investigation. On arrival, officers talked with the female victim who indicated that the suspect (George Ruiz, Male Hispanic, Pasadena resident) was her boyfriend and he had raped, assaulted, and imprisoned her. Pasadena Police officers transported the victim to a local hospital for medical evaluation and treatment. Officers prepared a search warrant for the suspect’s residence and requested a Department of Justice High Risk Warrant on the suspect’s vehicle, which was author-
ized. On Feb. 13 at about 1:30 a.m., Suspect Ruiz and an accomplice were stopped and detained by California Highway Patrol officers just prior to crossing the state line into Nevada on Interstate 15. Ruiz was arrested without incident and later booked at the Pasadena jail for numerous charges including sexual and physical assault. Ruiz’s bail was set at $1,050,000. This case underscores a well-coordinated effort between first responders and police detectives.

How to Sell High: Avoid these Three Mistakes When Selling Your Home Alhambra - When you decide to sell your home, setting your optimal asking price is one of the most important decisions you will ever make. Price is often the first thing a prospective buyer sees, and many homes are passed over as “not in our price range” before the home even has a chance of being shown. Your asking price is often your home’s “first impression,” and if you want to realize the most money you can for your home, it’s imperative that you make an excellent first impression. This is not as easy as it sounds,
and pricing strategy should not be taken lightly. Pricing too high can be as costly to a homeseller as pricing too low. Comparing against what other homes in your neighborhood have sold for is only a small part of the process, and by itself is not nearly enough to help you make the best decision. A recently study, which compiles 10 years of industry research, has resulted in a new special report entitled “Homesellers: How to Get the Price You Want (and Need).” This report will help you understand pricing strategy from three different angles. Response to ‘Councilmember Alex Blackburn Steals the Show ...‘ (2/11/16 Issue) The City of Monrovia has been beholden to real estate developers for ages. In the 1990s the citizens of Monrovia established the hillside wilderness preserve and shut down a massive proposed development that would have turned a large portion of Monrovia’s hillsides into the likes of Gold Hill. Unfortunately, there has been no similar ordinance to protect the general character of Monrovia’s neighborhoods from the blight of over-development. What we see today is a blasphemy against what Monrovia was 30 years ago. Massive condominium projects crammed onto single-family residential properties right in the middle of single-family homes, near constant approval of building rental
units in the backyards of single-family homes, and massive condominium projects everywhere a developer can feasibly stick them. The city salivates at the increased property tax revenue, the council members get their campaign donations from the developers, and the citizens of Monrovia are left holding the bag in the form of additional gridlock, lack of parking, increased student-teacher ratios at school, and all the other blights associated with high-density development. It is a travesty. As someone who was born and raised in Monrovia, my first home was not in Monrovia because of affordability. I often find myself homesick for the town I knew and loved, but when I visit I find that town no longer exists. It was sacrificed on the altar of the almighty dollar and most of the citizens of Monrovia never even got to see part of that dollar. - Jerry Baker Via MonroviaWeekly. com
Councilmember Alex Blackburn is a true servant of the people and is aware of his role of a public servant is to work for the people. Thank you for saying what needed to be said at the Wake up of the City Event. Thanks to Beacon News for printing Mr. Blackburn’s speech so that there is no misunderstanding of what he said. Good job Reporter Susan Motander. Now that the Councilmember rests his case, is there no rebuttal from the elected officials or the community? The word for today: sycophant. - Ralph R. Walker Via MonroviaWeekly. com Any attempt to rebut Mr. Blackburn’s conclusions would be foolish. - Dan Crandell Via MonroviaWeekly. com

and your fellow council members is admirable, but I would like to hear specifics from you. If the people are “getting worked,” it is important to know how, or why, or over what you think we are being worked. Your statement reads like a memo meant for distribution to your four colleagues, not to the citizens at large. It is easy to shout fire in a crowded theatre, but if you really want to play the iconoclast, I’d like to hear the specifics. We are a small city, with a form of government designed for a small city. The city manager, along with a staff of professionals, in fact, is supposed to run the city. They “handle” the day-to-day operations of a multi-million dollar enterprise and are overseen by five duly elected members of the community. These five are not professional politicians and rely on the expertise of the city staff. When the council people think they are being “worked” or “handled,” it is their job to make changes, and at least four of the council members, including you, have been up to this task in the not-so-distant past. The private interests of whom you speak know what the system is and “promote their agenda” to the professional staff while separately appealing to you and your colleagues on whatever level they can. Alex, this is just the way 99 percent of the world works and has worked for time immemorial. I expect those who represent me to recognize this and to see through the flattery. If I feel they are not, they don’t get my vote next time they are up for election. Any information you might have that helps me make a more informed decision is welcome. The five of you have a thankless task and I applaud and admire the commitment you’ve made to serve the com-
munity. No matter what decision you make, some will feel it was made in self-interest, or that the wool was pulled over your eyes by clever private interests. Despite how you might receive this, I do appreciate your, and your fellow council members, efforts on behalf of Monrovia. - Kris Leonard Via MonroviaWeekly. com
Reader Takes Issue With Sierra Madre Watchman
Dear Editor: I read the article published by The Watchman and the comments submitted by The Tattler, John Crawford, and it is extremely unfortunate and shameful that these two individuals state things that are inaccurate and state things without researching the facts and statistics of what is happening in our City, Sierra Madre. If they would take the time to look at our budget, revenues, and expenditures, and study the actual facts and problems that we are facing, they would realize what mistakes they are making in their inaccurate statements. If we all decided to vote according to their wishes, our wonderful city of Sierra Madre would no longer exist. There would not be enough money to sustain our city and it would eventually be dis-incorporated and we would become an unincorporated part of L.A. County. Is that what they want? Is that what we want? I think the answer would be a resounding no. Let us all make an informed and educated decision on how to vote on the upcoming UUT measure. - Pat Holland Sierra Madre

Let’s Set the Record Straight Bob Harbicht stated in the Feb. 7 issue of the Weekly Star in the Pasadena Star News that since leaving the Arcadia City Council two years ago after having served for 20 years, things have taken a turn for the worse. According to Bob, problems are not being handled correctly, decisions have become emotional and the residents themselves have taken a stance against mansionization. Harbicht says that if reelected he would study the development issue carefully. In his opinion, only his steady hand will keep the ship on course. Now for your information, let’s set the record straight. Twenty-five years ago when I served on the Council with Harbicht, I strongly advised him of the urgent need for us to address the problem of the mansion-style houses beginning to pop-up in south Arcadia. At that time, this issue should have been studied for the benefit of all Arcadians. Harbicht’s response: “It’s their property. Let them do whatever they want.” I also mentioned to him that there were no homeowner associations in south Arcadia, which could be of benefit regarding future housing development. Harbicht’s response: “Who needs them?” I pointed out to him 25 years ago that one-third of our city had no street lighting. I felt that this problem should be addressed not only as a security issue, but as a property value issue and a city development improvement. Furthermore, the existing street lighting in some areas was both insufficient and sub-standard. Harbicht’s response: “Nobody is forcing us to do it, so why should we?” Nothing has been done to this day. Perhaps Mr. Harbicht, whose motto has always been “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” will now be able to understand why things are more contentious in our city. It has become necessary for the citizens to get involved in order to get things done. All these issues should have been addressed and resolved years ago. “Bring Back Bob?” I don’t think so. - George Fasching Former Mayor Arcadia

‘Sweet Judy Blue Eyes’ Judy Collins Launches The Rose By Terry Miller
www.roseconcerts.com 888-645-5006 Dinner Seating/Service Available For All Performances
How fitting that on Valentine’s Day legendary songwriter Judy Collins, complete with her 12-string Martin acoustic, wit, and repartee, helped unveil the Rose, Pasadena’s newest night spot last Sunday. The packed house of 700-plus came to see one of the most iconic singers of the 1960s and 1970s. They were not disappointed. Collins, in addition to playing and singing beautifully, added some quips between songs that only a veteran of the music business could get away with. Lance Sterling, owner of The Rose also owns popular Canyon Club in Agoura Hills and the Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills. Sterling has transformed the former Gelson’s supermarket at 245 E. Green St. into a really cool venue where if you love music and food you will be right at home. You will also see a plethora of signed guitars and music memorabilia. “I have a lot of stuff that has been in

Sunday. Collins' debut album “A Maid of Constant Sorrow” was released in 1961, but it was her cover of Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides, Now", the lead single from her 1967 album “Wildflowers,” that gave Collins international prominence. The single hit the Top 10 on the Billboard Pop Singles chart and won Collins her first Grammy Award for Best Folk Performance. She enjoyed further success with her covers of "Someday Soon," "Chelsea Morning," "Amazing Grace," and "Cook with Honey." Collins experienced the biggest success of her career with her cover of Stephen Sondheim's "Send in the Clowns" from her bestselling 1975 album “Judith.” The single charted on the Billboard Pop Singles chart in 1975 and then again in 1977, spending 27 nonconsecutive weeks on the chart and earning Collins a Grammy Award nomination for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female, as well as a Grammy Award for Sondheim for Song of the Year. After songwriter Stephen Stills split from fellow songwriter Collins, he crafted "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" to express his feelings about the romantic involvement. The title is a play on "Sweet Judy Blue Eyes" which is what Collins ended up titling her autobiography. The word "suite" in music also depicts an ordered set of musical pieces, which Crosby, Stills, and Nash play out in the seven-minute-plus song. The Rose will eventually see many of the same artists who perform at The Canyon Club and Saban Theatre. Those include blues guitarist Robert Cray, Todd Rundgren (one of Sterling’s favorites), among a long list of artists.

AUSD Board Discuss Measure A, Measure I, and Full-Day T-K Classes By Jonathan Tsou
626-254-0455
On Feb. 10, the Arcadia Unified School Board (AUSB), led by President Kay Kinsler, convened a regular meeting. The board approved the Consent Agenda, which included the acceptance of the Annual Report for Measure I Citizens’ Bond Oversight Committee, the acceptance of the Citizens’ Measure A Oversight Committee, and a presentation on Full-Day Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten. In March of 2012, voters passed a parcel tax that allows Arcadia schools to offset the state budget tax. In 2014 -2015, the total parcel tax collected was close to $3.5 million. The tax went to support teacher salaries, counselor salaries, and staff benefits. The Measure A Over-
sight Committee, which meets three to four times a year, reviewed the annual expenditures of the tax and indicated at the board meeting that money from the parcel tax has helped hire and retain 34 teachers and three counselors. In November 2006, Arcadia residents passed the Measure I Citizens’ Bond. The bond gives 218 million bond issues that would repair, renovate, and upgrade facilities throughout the Arcadia School District. Currently, there have been numerous renovations and upgrades to Arcadia Schools, including the new library in Longley Way Elementary, the aquatic center at Arcadia High School, and the Dana Middle School gym. After the reports, the Arcadia School Assistant Superintendent Kevin Hryciw gave a presentation on
a potential Full-Day Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten program, which will provide an alternative for parents who have their children in all-day programs outside of the school system. Hryciw hinted to research that showed children who take full-day kindergarten tend to make more academic gains in math and in reading through third grade. There are also benefits to teachers which include a more flexible schedule to foster grade level standards and more ability to enhance a student’s needs and interests. Although the plan has numerous positives, it does not come without its problems: The plan will need the school to provide five more teachers district-wide and also additional classrooms. The next AUSB meeting will take place on Feb. 23.

Schools said: “Your district reported that an adult testing irregularity occurred at Sierra Madre Elementary School during the administration of the 2011 STAR Program. Based upon the evidence available at this time, I concur with the district’s conclusion that a violation of state law and/ or regulations occurred (per California Education Code Section 60605[g] and California Code of Regulations, Title 5 [5 CCR] Section 853). The California Department of Education (CDE) retains its authority pursuant to the 5 CCR Section 1032(d) to reexamine its decision should the CDE become aware of new information that might have a bearing on this issue. “Based on your investigation and conclusions, the CDE will determine if adjustments to the school’s state and feder-
al accountability calculations are necessary (per 5 CCR Section 1032[e]).” Sierra Madre Weekly’s did hear from PUSD’s Mercedes Santoro PUSD’s information officer who confirmed that testing irregularities did, in fact occur in 2011 when it was reported that a teacher coached 3 students with test answers. There was an internal investigation which led to California Dept. of Education notification. The testing instructor was retrained in testing procedures. This investigation disqualified Sierra Madre Elementary School from any state awards for 2 years. According to Santoro, the testing irregularities did not impact the API scores. The school is now eligible to apply for state awards, once again should the principal deem it appropriate.

officials to review. The troubles at the Sierra Madre Police Department (SMPD) have been long and serious, including multiple lawsuits both externally, towards the department from citizens, and internally, from the department against the former chief of police, Marilyn Diaz. Additionally, the tiny city has little sales tax base, unlike neighboring cities such as Arcadia. It is a tough time indeed for the embattled burgh. Assistant City Manager Elisa Cox told Sierra Madre Weekly Friday, Jan. 22, that the city is actively seeking new police recruits from the academy but freely admits, “other cities pay considerably more than the SMPD, so this is key in the dilemma the city’s chief executives face.” Cox also said the election and the Utility User Tax (UUT) will, of course, play a crucial role in deciding the fate of the police. Elaine Aguilar had this to say in an email comment on this story: “The City of Sierra Madre has not entered into a contract with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. However, an update regarding Sierra Madre’s police services was provided at the Feb. 9 city
council meeting. As was indicated in city’s the Feb. 9 staff report, Sierra Madre's police officers are currently patrolling the streets 24/7, but they are working overtime at a pace that cannot be sustained. It is now necessary to secure supplemental, temporary assistance.” The staff report indicated that the Sheriff’s department had been contacted. The report also states that the contract for supplemental services would be on the council’s Feb. 23 agenda, and the contract would most likely be with the Sheriff’s Department. Like Sierra Madre, other San Gabriel Valley police departments are also not at full staffing levels. Mayor John Capoccia also commented via email, “At Tuesday’s council meeting, Public Safety Director Giannone did advise the council that a contract for supplemental services will be presented at our next meeting. I agree with Assistant City Manager Cox. The upcoming measure to set our UUT at 10 percent will be crucial for Sierra Madreans to keep our own independent police department.”

Retired Teachers Present Grants to Local Schools Retired teachers never stop caring about education. With that in mind, the local division of California Retired Teachers Association #71 (CalRTA-SGV) has projects aimed at helping classroom teachers. One effort of this vital, active group is their grant-giving to teachers for materials or equipment that enhance student’s learning. Headed by Chair Patti Hahn, the CalRTA #71 Grant Committee has invited the school districts in Division #71 to complete applications in order for their teachers to participate in drawings for classroom grants. The Grant Committee was pleased to receive a good response from the districts, and over the past months has been awarding school grants to classroom teachers at faculty meetings. The first teacher to receive a classroom grant was Denise Knox, second grade teacher at New Temple Elementary School in the Valley Lindo School District. John Gannon is principal of New Temple. Another recipient of a CalRTA #71 classroom grant was Brandi Matsdorf, second grade teacher at Emma Shuey School in the Rosemead Elementary School District. The Book Rack By Gus Herrera
T
he Book Rack in Arcadia strives to be a haven for local readers, specializing in interacting with the community and providing the customer service and reader-friendly environment that you cannot find shopping online or through an app. Owner Karen Klopp, an avid reader, truly has a passion for books. Prior to owning the store, Klopp said that she worked at The Book Rack for almost 10 years, “I shopped there because I always read, it was a place to take my books … and there was a sign in the window one day … ‘help wanted’ … so I went in,” and the rest is history. Despite the many difficulties that today’s market may present for a used bookstore, The Book Rack has been a staple in area for more than 30 years by maintaining a clientele of adults who are passionate about their reading and by reaching out to the area’s youth. Klopp describes some of the challenges, “with Kindle and Amazon it has become different selling. People really have to love to read and want hold a book. It is sometimes difficult in this age of ‘I want it right now,’ and ‘oh I can just push this button and it will show up on my kindle.’” The store thrives off of its trade-in program, through which customers receive discounts and the store consistently builds its inventory. Furthermore, the store is able to gauge interest in which genres are trending amongst its readers, in addition to being introduced to new niche-genres and specific reads they otherwise may not know about. With an emphasis on promoting the wonders of reading to children, Klopp states that the store tries its best to do “anything to get kids to read, because if you can read, you can learn anything. You can travel the world and never have to leave your chair and you can have your cup of coffee or your coke or whatever you desire. You can read inside, you can read outside, you can take it with you wherever you go.” The store works with the area’s schools, advertising during local events and always maintaining inventory relevant to students. Klopp states, “We try to keep the books on our shelves that the young people need for their classes, with exception to

Forever Young: How Seniors Can Stay Happy and Healthy at Home The dusty stereotype of grandparents spending their 70s and 80s in a nursing home is fading fast, replaced by stories of skydiving seniors and engaged elders contributing to their communities. Today’s seniors are considerably healthier and more active than their grandparents, and they are remaining in their own homes far longer than generations past. Of course, healthy eating and daily activity are keys to independent living into advanced age, but researchers also point to less obvious, equally important indicators. These include maintaining a sense of purpose, using the health care system effectively, adapting the home environment, and perhaps most importantly, staying socially active with family, friends, and the community. “In our experience, the combination of healthy lifestyle choices and social engagement is critical to people extending their independent living years,”
said Dr. Philip Painter, chief medical officer for Humana at Home, Humana’s chronic disease management program that helps nearly 1 million people deal with diabetes, congestive heart failure and other conditions. Aging at home means thinking beyond medications and medical procedures, utilizing the health care system effectively and taking advantage of the tools it offers, Painter adds. As value becomes more important in our health care system, primary care physicians are acting as quarterbacks of their patients’ health, overseeing and coordinating all aspects of care, including resources for social engagement and unexpected medication side effects. Some medications, for example, affect appetite and nutrient absorption. Loneliness and grief can also play a role in malnourishment, leading to additional health issues, which is why it’s important to keep in touch with your doctor and let
him or her act as an overall health counselor. The health plans people choose also help with successful aging at home. Some plans, for example, include exercise and/or wellness programs. It’s also a good idea to consult experts, often found through local senior service agencies, on making homes safer by reducing tripping hazards such as rugs and cords; installing grab bars and hand rails where needed; and improving lighting. Besides the advanced emergency alert systems that some health companies employ, others like Humana are testing new technologies to help people more safely transition from hospital to home after a surgery and prevent unnecessary readmissions. By being openminded to the vast array of telehealth tools, you can stay connected and in your home longer. Visit Humana.com/ learning-center for additional information and health tips.

A Lesson Learned A new California Appellate case just published August 8, 2013, “Glaski v. Bank of America”, holds that a homeowner can challenge his lender’s right to foreclose by showing that the Deed of Trust never made it into the securitized trust until after the trust’s closing date. This issue is now squarely before the California Supreme Court in Yvanova v. New Century Mortgage Corp. This is the case in most loans made in the last 12 years. If the bank foreclosed we should be able to get the homeowner money damages and/or the house back. Or a lawsuit could be filed and a court ruling obtained preventing the court from foreclosing. Recently enacted Sections 2924(a)(6) and 2924.19 of California Civil Code provide the same relief to homeowners.

I
have a very old Camellia bush. I have a very young neighbor boy. The two have a very sweet connection. The Camellia, being very old and very big, still blooms profusely each year. For years it would get tons of buds which would open into gorgeous huge pink flowers. The flowers eventually turned brown and generally fell to the ground. Now, in the bush's old age, many of them fall to the ground while still in their pink stage. Thus, an absolutely gorgeous mountain of pink and green sitting atop an equally gorgeous blanket of pink and brown until the blanket, in
time, turns messy. Last year Luke, having just turned five, became fascinated with all this. He began picking up the brown ones from the ground and throwing them away. He discovered that even the pink ones on the ground turned brown after a short time so they got tossed too. Mommy, being a good mother, and I saw a great opportunity to teach Luke a good lesson about "little acts of kindness." So Luke became my driveway cleaner and worked diligently to keep everything neat, happily receiving a hug and kiss each time as his reward. My son, when he became aware of this, thought it was really a nice thing so
he said to me, "You know there is a Tooth Fairy, so why not a Camellia Fairy?" Every time he came by to see me, he would hide quarters under two or three of the flowers. Luke never figured out that the Tooth Fairy came the same day Bob did. He was pretty disappointed when blooming season was over. This year's blooming season arrived. Luke was coming home from kindergarten one day and Mommy said, "Oh look Luke. I see flowers on the ground." Luke bounded toward the bush and gleefully proclaimed, "You see flowers. I see coins!" Yep, a lesson learned.

El Monte National Little League Season Try-Outs By Mark Peters Feb. 6 in El Monte marks the beginning of Little League season. Young athletes from all over El Monte converge on Lambert Park for the El Monte National Little League (EMNLL) try-outs. All ages arrived, from T-Ball, AAA, Minors, Majors, and Juniors, to have a chance to be picked for a team. For those that can remember EMNLL has been an anchor of the community, standing the test of time and politics to emerge as a central hub for our children’s baseball dreams. Many familiar faces have returned this year and many have moved up in rank and file. Degas Peters, Julian Velasquez, and Manuel Montelongo are returning after playing in the AAA Pirates under the tutelage and coaching of Coach Irvin Gaona and Manager Yuri Montelongo, with returning Team Mom Marivel Guerra-Peters. This season will mark a strong year for the Minor Pirates, with strong hitters, solid catchers, and jack rabbit runners. This season, try-outs showed so much talent, with returning players to ones who never wore a glove. Re-
Minor Player Degas Peters rounding first.
turning player Lucas Rubalcava had his game on dialed in and will be a driving force to contend with. Anthony Velasco, returning player, will be an unstoppable storm on the field. One new player to be spotted on the field was Samantha Lopez; she showed us strength and character that not many first timers have. The EMNLL can only survive with the dedication and devotion of the EMNLL Board of Directors: Eddie Martinez, EMNLL president; Jason Peterson, vice

president - Big Field; Patricia Ferrer, secretary; Adrian Perales, communications officer; Tina Thach, Team Mom coordinator; Carlos Salcedo, Sergeant at Arms; Joey Enriquez, snack bar coordinator; Brenda Peterson, safety athletic director; and Yuri Montelongo, city liaison to EMNLL. Opening Day is just around the corner. March 12 will be the season opener for all little league athletes. Mark your calendars and come out to support your favorite team(s).

Arcadia Unified School District Revives Middle School Athletics By May S. Ruiz Students in the Arcadia Unified School District (AUSD) enjoy a certain cachet when conversations turn to school reputations and student performance. Few in the San Gabriel Valley would not have heard of the district’s prowess. Its high school is a renowned powerhouse – in academics, music, and performing arts. The district’s sports teams, however, while competitive in the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF), have not won as many titles as its marching band. But that is about to change. Jeffrey Wilson, assistant superintendent for educational services, declares “We are committed to having our athletic department mirror the success of our schools’ academics and performing arts. We are determined to develop the whole the child, and that includes strengthening our athletic program.” AUSD’s middle school sports program was dismantled in1995 when the district transitioned junior high to the middle school model, made up of sixth, seventh and eighth grades. When this
happened, the focus veered heavily towards academics. What were formerly competitive teams effectively became more recreational squads that played in intramurals. As Laurie McDonald, student services coordinator, puts it, “There was also a shift in education philosophy at the time that by reducing competition students would have an opportunity to grow in other ways. The belief was that it’s in middle school where kids could identify their passion. But when we did this we essentially disregarded students who had an enthusiasm for athletics and their chance to develop that. We encouraged our youth to excel in academics, performing arts, and marching band, and provided all the programs towards that pursuit. Why shouldn’t we do the same for sports-minded students?” According to Ryan Foran, AUSD public information office, two years ago the district formed a Sports Enhancement Committee made up of all three middle school principals (Dr. Daniel Hacking of Dana, Dr. Tom Bruce of First Avenue, and Benja-
Judson International School

min Acker of Foothills), Scott Bramley, coach and director of technology and information services, Wilson, several high school coaches and parent boosters, and himself. They met regularly to discuss ways to make their athletics as excellent as their academics and one of the results was the expansion of the middle school sports offerings. “Parents couldn’t be more thrilled,” Foran says. “As much as they love the district, they had to find other places for their kids to play basketball or football. Now we’re offering competitive sports on campus and feed-
back has been 100 percent positive. We started with basketball because it was too late for football. We organized it in November 2015, and on the 3rd of December, First Avenue faced off with Dana Middle School for the first time in two decades. The gym was packed; students were so excited to be playing their buddies three blocks away. Now they play each other and their parents get to hang out. It’s school spirit and it’s community spirit.” Ms. McQuaid relates the excitement on that momentous occasion, “There was a traffic jam in the parking lot
and on the street. Parents couldn’t get to the sidewalk to pick up their kids after the game. There was so much excitement.” This energy was apparent when all the middle school principals, coaches, and other school administrators sat down recently to describe how AUSD will roll out their athletic program. They are holding tryouts for boys’ and girls’ soccer, girls’ softball, and boys’ volleyball to compete this year. Next year, they will be fielding teams in football and girls’ volleyball. And they will be participating in the 210 League, made up of teams from Monrovia, Duarte, Temple City, South Pasadena, and La Canada. Wilson sums up AUSD’s objective, “We have since discovered that some competition is healthy and eliminating it didn’t serve our students well. The vision of the district is to address the developmental and cognitive needs of the whole child and athletics play a crucial role. We want to hone our students’ physical skills in middle school so they are prepared for high school competitive teams. A strong sports offering is the logical
complement to our existing outstanding high school programs in academics, drama, music, and marching band. All these put together will help in the transition to high school which will prepare them for college and beyond.” “We have a very active high school booster group that supports our athletics program. Now we are hoping to develop one in middle school to raise money and help with transportation. We have allocated a certain amount of money from our Local Control Accountability Plan to fund sports and we’re using some of that to pay for school or charter buses. A booster group can help in defraying the expense. And the more parents are involved, the better the programs are. It is parents who make our programs so excellent,” Wilson explains. Bramley summarizes it succinctly, “We work and live in a community that supports and appreciates all our school accomplishments. And while we have a good high school athletic program, we want it to be excellent.” And who can argue with that?
