The Perfect Storm Is Here: El Niño Has Arrived … It Is Official BY TERRY MILLER A series of storms which started early Monday morning (Jan. 4) have brought welcome rainfall

across California and other portions of the southwestern United States this week. The track of these storms is fueled by El Niño in the tropical Pacific Ocean.

"The above-average temperatures in the tropical Pacific Ocean, known as El Niño, tends to strengthen the storm track into the West Coast and occasionally California during the winter," said Alex

Huff Introduces Legislation to Ban Powdered Alcohol in CA

Senate Minority Leader Emeritus Bob Huff (R-San Dimas) started the first week of the 2016 legislative session by introducing a new bill, SB 819, which will place a ban on the sale of powdered alcohol in California. The product, also known as Palcohol, is a freeze dried version of alcohol which comes in a small pouch and is the equivalent

to a shot of alcohol. The crystallized formula becomes a cocktail once mixed with water. The product has already been banned in 27 other states. “This substance is yet another drug that we should be concerned about and for good reason,” said Senator Huff. “Some are predicting SEE PAGE 13

Federal Grand Jury Indicts Riverside Man on Charges of Conspiring With Shooter in San Bernardino Terrorist Attack Enrique Marquez Jr. Is Also Charged With Being ‘Straw Purchaser’ of Two Assault Rifles

Enrique Marquez Jr., a longtime friend of Sayed Rizwan Farook, the male

shooter in the San Bernardino terrorist attack, was named in a federal

grand jury indictment. He is now being charged with conspiring with Farook in

2011 and 2012 to provide material support to terrorists. Marquez, a 24-yearold Riverside resident, was also charged with two counts of making a false statement in relation to the purchase of two assault rifles that were used in the deadly shooting at the Inland Regional Center (IRC) on Dec. 2, 2015. The five-count indictment is additionally charging Marquez with marriage fraud for making a false statement on immigration paperwork in relation to an alleged sham marriage with a member of Farook’s family. “This indictment demonstrates that we will hold

accountable all individuals who collaborate with terrorists in executing their plans,” said United States Attorney Eileen M. Decker. “Defendant Marquez’s extensive plotting with Syed Rizwan Farook in 2011 and 2012, and his purchase of explosive powder and two firearms provided the foundation for the murders that occurred [last] month. This indictment is the result of sustained and coordinated efforts by many federal and state prosecutors, agents and officers, and I thank them for their efforts.” David Bowdich, the assistant director in charge of the FBI’s Los Angeles field office said: “Mr. Marquez is

charged for his role in a conspiracy several years ago to target innocent civilians in our own backyard with cold-blooded terror attacks, and with providing weapons to an individual whose endgame was murder. The covert nature of the defendant’s alleged actions is a stark reminder of the challenges we face in preventing attacks planned in the name of violent jihad, and underscores the critical need for those with knowledge about terror plots to come forward.” See website for full article details: PasadenaIndependent.com

Marilynn C. (Baker) Serotko passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on Dec. 30, 2015. She was 78 years young. She married her husband, John D. Serotko III, on Dec. 27, 1955. The couple relocated to Monrovia, Calif. in 1964. She was a loving sister, wife, and mother of five children and over 20 foster children. Marilynn became a teacher in 1973, starting her career at Immaculate Conception School. She worked at the Monrovia Unified School District where she received grants and solely implemented the Apple Computer System program in 1986, which is still in use today. That contributed to her love for apples. Before retiring in 2002, she earned two Associate Degrees, a Bachelor’s Degree, and a Master’s Degree. She also earned “Teacher of the Year” from the Monrovia School district in 1990. Marilynn’s passions were sewing, knitting, crocheting and sports (Ohio St., Pittsburgh Pirates, and Pittsburgh Steelers.) She was preceded in death by the love of her life John D. Baker (2015) and nephew Mark Baker (1976) of Ohio. She is survived by her brother Howard Baker and companion Shirley Mahon of Ohio. Children are John D. Serotko IV and wife Dee, Jayne Anne Denzinger, Jennifer Lynn Serotko and husband Arthur Vargas, Marilynn C. (Kubisch) Serotko and companion Tim Clark, and Joseph John Serotko. In addition she has nine grandchildren, nine great-

grandchildren, and three sister-in-laws - Norma Baker, Dolores Baron, and Rosella McCloskey - all of Ohio, and many nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind her loving dogs, Big Boy and Baby Girl. As best said by former student Martin Tanner, “Marilynn touched so many lives through her teachings. She was my hero. She had a profound effect on me and countless others. She was always patient, always kind, always humble yet not afraid to challenge the status quo when it needed challenging. Never too busy to give her students individual attention; even though forty years have passed, I can clearly recall many occasions the time she took to help me. Her presence lives on.” In honoring her wishes there will be no services. Please make donations in her memory to either Texas Scottish Rite Hospital, 2222 Welborn Street, Dallas, Texas 95219 and/or The Knox School of Santa Barbara 501 (c) 3, 1525 Santa Barbara Street, Santa Barbara, CA 93101. She left us with this: “Be God’s instrument and your life will be a melody.” We love you and will miss you always.

Local Democrats Praise Executive Actions to Decrease Gun Violence After meeting with Attorney General Loretta Lynch on Monday, President Obama announced new executive actions to respond to the country’s gun violence incidents. The actions will increase background checks, reporting, state and federal cooperation, and mental health resources. Rep. Judy Chu (CA27) released the following statement: “After the tragic shooting in San Bernardino – as with dozens and dozens of mass shootings that have come before – we cried out for action. Smart proposals like more background checks can reduce the likelihood of a future mass shooting and limits on magazines and assault weapons can save lives. Yet, despite numerous opportunities, Republicans in Congress have refused to act. That inaction is dangerous and irresponsible. We must tighten our gun laws to keep the most dangerous weapons out of the wrong hands. The alternative is a country where mass shootings remain a fact of life, and I refuse to accept that. The President’s announced executive actions include:

- Toughening background checks nationwide: The President’s executive actions provide new guidance on existing federal laws, clarifying that any individual in the business of selling firearms must obtain a license through the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and therefore conduct background checks on prospective gun purchasers. These actions also include new measures and resources to make the background check system more efficient and effective. - Protecting communities with bolstered enforcement: The executive actions take new steps to promote smart and effective enforcement of our gun laws – including a proposed increase in funding for more ATF agents, greater resources for tracking illegal online firearms trafficking and strengthened domestic violence outreach efforts. - Improving mental health services: The President is proposing increased investment to expand access to mental health care. Further, the executive actions remove barriers that pre-

vent the reporting of relevant mental health information to the background check system. - Driving new research

into gun safety: The executive actions direct the Departments of Defense, Justice and Homeland Security to conduct or sponsor research

into new technology to make firearms safer. More information can be found on the White House website.

Assemblyman Mike Gatto Introduces Legislation to Protect Children From Identity Theft

On Tuesday, Jan. 5, Assemblyman Mike Gatto (D-Glendale) introduced legislation that would allow parents to protect their child and family from identity theft. AB 1580 allows a parent to freeze their child’s credit with the three credit bureaus, preventing identity thieves from opening fraudulent credit accounts and ruining their credit at an early age. Consumer-investigative reporter Julie Watts from CBS affiliate KPIX in San Francisco reported about her attempts to freeze her own child’s credit, but was refused by the credit bureaus because there

was no state law mandating them to do so. After reporting on the dangers of identity theft, Watts decided to proactively protect her daughter against fraud by freezing her credit. However, she was led down a road of bureaucratic red tape that almost prevented her, and would prevent most parents, from protecting their children. “As a parent of two young daughters, I understand why someone would go above and beyond to shield their child from harm,” said Gatto. “AB 1580 is a common-sense proposal that provides parents the tools to protect their child’s financial future.”

Until now, parents have only been able to freeze their child’s credit after the child has been a victim of identity fraud. Since children do not have credit in the first place, giving their parents the option to freeze their credit at birth only makes sense. States such as Idaho, Texas, and Maryland have already successfully passed and implemented similar laws. “It is time for California to step up and join the many states that have already passed similar legislation,” said Gatto. “Parents will be able to sleep better at night knowing their child’s identity is protected.”

into parts of Arizona, these storms will not erase the drought across the southwest. Snow will fall across the mountains, which will be beneficial for filling lakes and rivers during the spring and summer months. Snowfall will be measured in feet across the Sierra Nevada. Snow this week could cause travel problems near Donner Pass. The first storm, which moved through into this past Monday night, was the weakest across Southern California with only light rainfall, but brought heavier rain from Baja California, Mexico into Arizona and New Mexico. The first storm already delivered rain to San Francisco and snow to Flagstaff, Arizona. Portions of southern Arizona received up to half an inch of rain during this past Monday and Tuesday. The second wave of storms to roll ashore began on Tuesday and will last until tomorrow, Friday Jan. 8. These will be progressively

stronger and bring heavier rainfall and mountain snow across all of California and into Arizona and New Mexico. According to AccuWeather meteorologist Dave Samuhel, "The storms during the second half of the week have the potential to unload one to three feet of snow on the mountains and ski resorts of Southern California." In addition to wintry travel problems, enough rain will fall to raise the risk of sporadic urban flooding and a small number of mudslides, especially in burn scar areas from wildfires. Motorists will need to allow extra time for their commutes much of this week due to wet roads and slick conditions, especially along Interstates 5, 8, 10, 15, 40, and 80. Winds are not expect-

ed to be strong with these storms compared to those that rolled across the northwestern U.S. over the last couple months. However, winds will be strong enough to direct damaging waves toward Southern California later this evening, Jan. 7. Some of the waves will be high enough to top jetties and cause flooding along some beach communities. A multi-vehicle crash Tuesday early afternoon involving a jackknifed big rig prompted closure of several lanes of the westbound Foothill (210) Freeway at Sierra Madre Boulevard in Pasadena, according to the California Highway Patrol. A Flash Flood alert was also issued Tuesday paying particular attention to the Glendora foothills where fires consumed thousands of acres.

At approximately 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 1, Los Angeles County Sheriff's homicide detectives responded to the 12900 block of Lower Azusa Road, Irwindale, to assist Irwindale Police Department personnel in investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of

a man. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. There is no additional information available at this time and the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's

January sets the stage for looking forward to plans and goals for the New Year. Let’s consider some commitments that are sure to positively impact your team. Praise Your Staff: Often managers only give feedback when things are going poorly or especially well. Choose to be a different kind of manager by regularly praising the good work of your team. Acknowledgement motivates and drives productivity. It also fortifies commitment and boosts morale. Clear Goals: A set of well established, clear goals makes it easy to stay on track and focused on priorities. Look at what is most important to your business and team, then set two or three goals to get you there. Involving your staff in goal setting will solidify their commitment.

Delegate: Balance your workload and build the skills of your team through delegation. Entrust them with work that stretches their skill set, entices their intellect, and fulfills their heart. Training: Grow the skills and expertise of you and your staff through training programs, books, podcasts, videos, and more. Set aside time each month for an activity that will grow you and your team professionally. Bring in a lunch time speaker, join a professional association or read and discuss an interesting article. Do this every month and by the end of the year you and your staff will surely have grown professionally. Elicit Ideas: Employees are generally full of great ideas on how to improve things in the workplace. Saving money, time, and resources

is at the heart of every business, and your employees often have very sound ideas on just how to do that. Set up a system where ideas are solicited and submitted. Then act on them. Collecting ideas that just sit on the shelf accumulating dust will only dissuade employees. Instead put into action those ideas that are worthwhile. Make 2016 a productive and fulfilling year for you and your employees. Heather Backstrom is an executive coach, leadership development consultant and speaker. Well folks, I did it. I have taken another step into the world of modern technology. I bought a smart phone. Now, at this moment in time, the damn thing is smarter than I am. If I live long enough, I shall overcome. You have to know that I have lived closer to a century than to a half century (been a long time since I saw 50). My first memory of a phone goes back to the one that hung on my Aunt Jessie’s kitchen wall down on the farm. It had a crank on the side that you turned to call Central. Central, the operator, then “rang up” whomever it was you wanted to talk with. That’s all a phone was used for - to let people talk to each other. It sent voices over

wires that allowed folks to communicate by word of mouth. You could not type on it to send printed messages. You could not take pictures with it then send them out for the world to view. You could not play music on it. You could not tell it where you wanted to go and have it tell you how to get there. You could not ask it about a movie and have it tell you where the movie was playing, what time it started and how long it would last. You simply could not do anything on it but talk. I’m told my new smart phone can do all those things. I’m impressed. Personally, I have a few more steps to take.

entertainment Contemporary Oeuvre by Alex Israel at the Huntington Art Gallery 8 | january 7, 2016- january 13, 2016

by MAY S. RUIZ “The Blue Boy” by Thomas Gainsborough is so representative of the Huntington (Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Garden) in San Marino that it is usually the first piece of art people seek out when they tour the gallery. Visitors to the venerable San Marino landmark will either find it delightfully amusing or downright shocking when they see this iconic painting juxtaposed to a decidedly modern selfie of contemporary artist, Alex Israel, wearing a Dodger’s blue jacket. A year in the planning, this art intervention of works by Israel opened to the public on Dec. 12, 2015 and will be on view until July 11, 2016. Kevin Salatino, director of the art collections at the Huntington, says, “Not everyone would associate us with contemporary art, but we live in the 21st century so we should engage with all that’s 21st century. People think this mansion must have been exactly what it looked like when the Huntingtons were here, which is

BeaconMediaNews.com

so far from the truth; it is not a static house. But there is a certain consistency to the kind of Gilded Age material that we continue to collect that complement what the Huntingtons had.” It may surprise many to know that the Huntington has done the occasional contemporary intervention before now. Catherine Hess, chief curator of European art, relates, “Our first intervention was a Ricky Swallow sculptures and Lesley Vance paintings exhibition in a small upstairs gallery. It was the beginning of the earthquake and we got our constituents through that.” The decision to approach Israel this time around was Salatino’s idea. He explains, “I have known Alex and have watched his career flourish. He loves L.A. and its iconography, the Hollywood dream machine, and fantasy. And so much about the Huntington is really about fantasy. About a year ago, Alex looked at the house and thought about his pre-existing work to decide which objects are right for the Huntington. “Our goal is to create a

dialogue between the old and the new; we want people to see the old through the lens of the new, and viceversa. Some people might react positively, some might respond negatively, but that would be better than for them not to think at all,” Salatino concludes. Hess interjects, “One of the biggest surprises, at least in my perspective, after the installation was complete, was how some traditional Masters pieces were remarkably informed by the juxtaposition of Alex’s art, and the reverse. His work, in a vacuum, can read a certain way, but placed in this context, makes it compelling. I’m hoping people will also see it that way.” Salatino continues, “This contemporary installation is meant to be engaging, provocative, interesting. Then it goes away and we’ll do another one in a few years. A really good reason for having Alex’s work here is that he has a love affair with this area. It was much the same for Henry Huntington, who fell in love with it after he visited. He initially thought he would

buy the land and divide it up, but eventually decided to keep it. It was one of the first Beaux Arts residences and was the largest house for miles around until it was supplanted by Aaron Spelling’s mansion in West Hollywood. Alex grew up in the Holmby Park circle, looking up at Spelling’s house.” The culture of Hollywood and celebrity is very much the central theme in Israel’s oeuvre. Sprinkled throughout the Huntington are paintings, murals, and sculptures that reference famous movies or icons from memorable films. It is a veritable scavenger hunt for visitors to the art gallery as they find contemporary pieces that have been placed alongside traditional art objects. There is the crystal egg on a mantelpiece that was an iconic piece from the 1983 coming-of-age Tom Cruise film “Risky Business,” for instance. In another gallery, a cleverly concealed bronze prop will undoubtedly cause visitors to do a double-take at one of the most recognizable 1941 “Maltese Falcon” props. In the ceramics study

room, Israel displayed a mold of an Oscar statuette – the very quintessence of Hollywood and celebrity. The most dramatic of Israel’s installation is the transformation of the staircase where a fragmented sky backdrop mural bursts. Salatino enthuses, “It is an Aha! moment – with drama and theatricality in a way that is not intrusive, but complementary. It’s Alex Israel,“Self Portrait (Dodgers),” 2014‒2015, stunningly beau- acrylic and bondo on fiberglass, 96 inches x 84 tiful and it looks inches x 4 inches. 2016 NAMM Show Prepares for Largest Music Merchant Show in World By Devin Stannard When January rolls in every year, we music journalists get a bit giddy. OK, we go nuts … You see, no matter how old we get, the NAMM show in Anaheim revitalizes the beast within, with a plethora of eye and ear candy for musicians and those who eat, breath, and inwardly digest the music industry for their livelihood. “The global music products industry can expect to see thousands of business opportunities and expanding member benefits on arrival to Anaheim for the 2016 NAMM Show,” this, according to the press release the marketing department sent out recently to encourage people in the industry to attend what is known worldwide as the preeminent music merchants trade show . These are not merely words, it is truth in advertising. We have covered these shows since the early 1990s and not only has each year gotten bigger and better, but the quality of merchant(s) is outstanding. As technology grows and advances at breakneck speed, we in the news business are trying to catch our breath … especially this time of year in Anaheim. Fear not, even NAMM has an App for that (see later in the story.) Three of our many NAMM passions each year are guitars, drums, and recording equipment but also the incredible energy that is NAMM … vibrant, colorful and not just for the young. While the business itself tends to cater to young, up-and-coming musicians, many will be pleasantly surprised to see the number of legendary figures in the business you may just bump into. We have talked to Yoko Ono, Quincy Jones, as well shared a few cocktails with George Benson. We do not (usually) like to name-drop,

but a few years back we had the distinct honor of hearing B.B. King play to a handful of people at a booth at NAMM circa 1986. The more than 96,000 people expected to attend from Jan. 21 to 24 will have the chance to experience the latest in music instruments and products, while learning from fellow industry leaders about the best music business practices. “This crazy little thing we call the music industry is changing and evolving incredibly fast, but the human desire to make and enjoy music is stronger than ever,” said Joe Lamond, president and CEO of NAMM. “NAMM members from around the world are embracing this change and will gather once again in Anaheim to celebrate new product innovations, share ideas, and learn at ‘NAMM U’. They will enjoy the networking and camaraderie that has made this event the four most vibrant days on the industry calendar.” With more than 650 international companies exhibiting in Anaheim, the global presence at the 2016 NAMM Show is the largest of any NAMM Show yet. There will be international exhibit pavilions for China, Ger-

many, Spain, and the United Kingdom, with Argentina’s doubling in size this year. In total, 1,600 NAMM member companies representing over 5,100 brands of instruments, music products, and technology, including Yamaha Corporation, Fender Music Instrument Corporation, Roland Corporation, Gibson Brands, and U.S. Music Corporation are expected to show at the 2016 event. Taylor Guitars, among others have expanded their exhibit space. It is interesting to note that BackBeat Books has just published a super book on Taylor Guitars … so their timing is spot on. That same company also published an exhaustive book on Beatles Gear … talk about “fab.” (See last week’s edition for a full review.) The NAMM Show also has a smartphone App available for download on iOS and Android. Users can create profiles and connect with other members while attending the show. The updated app includes a new “What’s Happening Now” section that informs users about events in real time. This is great news. For more information visit www.NAMM.com.

A new California Appellate case just published August 8, 2013, “Glaski v. Bank of America”, holds that a homeowner can challenge his lender’s right to foreclose by showing that the Deed of Trust never made it into the securitized trust until after the trust’s closing date. This issue is now squarely before the California Supreme Court in Yvanova v. New Century Mortgage Corp. This is the case in most loans made in the last 12 years. If the bank foreclosed we should be able to get the homeowner money damages and/or the house back. Or a lawsuit could be filed and a court ruling obtained preventing the court from foreclosing. Recently enacted Sections 2924(a)(6) and 2924.19 of California Civil Code provide the same relief to homeowners. It is highly suggested that homeowners take this window of opportunity to get relief before the banks get Congress to close this door with national legislation. Contact us so we can help you.

Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra Explores Bach’s ‘Cantata No. 140’ Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra (LACO) Music Director Jeffrey Kahane will serve as a musical tour guide for LACO’s annual “Discover” performance, a special one-night-only exploration of Bach’s popular “Cantata No. 140” featuring soprano Teresa Wakim, tenor Colin Ainsworth, bass Andrew Craig Brown, USC-Thornton Chamber Singers, and the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus. The performance will be held on Saturday, Jan. 23 (8 p.m.) at the Ambassador Auditorium (131 St. John Ave., Pasadena). This "Discover" program is designed to lead patrons to a greater understanding and appreciation of the historical and cultural significance of cantatas composed by Bach and to hear the piece with new ears. One

of Bach's approximately 200 surviving sacred cantatas, it is noted for a remarkable range of expression and musical styles. Kahane, who explores a different work each year at LACO's "Discover" concert, is lauded for his "eloquence" (The New York Times). LACO is considered one of the world’s premier chamber orchestras as well as a pacesetter in presenting wide-ranging repertoire and adventurous commissions. Its 2015-16 season features a compelling mix of beloved masterpieces and genre-defying premieres from firmly established, as well as notable up-and-coming composers, programmed by Kahane, one of the world’s foremost conductors and pianists, who marks his 19th season as LA-

CO’s music director. Tickets (starting at $30) are on sale now and may be purchased online at www. laco.org, by calling LACO at (213) 622-7001, or at the venue box office on the night of the concert, if tickets remain. Student rush tickets ($12), based on availability, may be purchased at the box office the day of the concert. Also available for college students is the $30 Campus to Concert Hall All Access Pass – good for all seven of LACO’s orchestral series concerts, “Discover,” Bach’s cantata “Sleepers Awake,” and three “Westside Connections” concerts. Discounted tickets are also available by phone for seniors 65 years of age and older and groups of 12 or more.

‘The Funny Side of Frustration’ Orny Adams Headlines at Ice Club Jan. 15 and 16

Querulous, lively, selfdeprecating, and a little neurotic, Orny Adams is one of the most sought-after comics on the circuit. The talk show regular and documentary subject will return to perform his ever-changing stand-up routine at the Ice House Comedy Club on Jan. 15 and 16. The American comic Adams first rose to international prominence after co-starring in Jerry Seinfeld’s documentary “Comedian.” He has made several appearances on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” and has appeared on “The Late Show with David Letterman.” In 2010, Adams followed up his critically acclaimed debut comedy DVD “Path of Most Resistance,” with a powerful and poignant one-hour special “Orny Adams Takes The Third,” which aired on Comedy Central. The DVD reached number one in comedy on Amazon. Currently, Adams can be seen playing the iconic role Coach Finstock on the hit MTV show “Teen Wolf,” a one hour drama created by “Criminal Minds’” Jeff Davis. Early in his career Adams was named in the Hollywood Reporter as a favorite comedian to watch. He has written jokes for Jay Leno, Garry Shandling, and many other top comedians. He has twice written for the annual Emmy’s broadcast and has become the “go-to” guy when a celebrity needs a funny line. In July of 2000, Adams made

quite an impact at the Montreal Comedy Festival, which resulted in a development deal with Warner Brothers Studio, and his appearance on “Letterman.” In 2010, Adams was thrilled to return to the festival in Montreal working alongside one of his favorite comedians, Steve Martin, on a taped televised stand-up show that Martin hosted. Adams garnered rave reviews for his performance and was called a “stand-out act” by the Hollywood Reporter. Other notable projects include a talk show pilot developed for Adams by CBS Television Distribution alongside Ashton Kutcher’s Katalyst Films. Adams shot another pilot for his own late night talk show for TBS and taped

his own series, “Modern Chaos with Orny Adams” for The Discovery Channel. He hosted his own show on Discovery’s Travel Channel, has appeared on “Jiminy Glick,” “Tough Crowd” on Comedy Central, “The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn,” “Last Call With Carson Daly,” and did a regular segment on Hollywood and politics on “Entertainment Tonight” and “The Insider.” But none of this matters until you see Adams live, where he is at his best, deconstructing the chaos of the modern world and getting worked up about things that most people just accept. His tour has reached clubs, theatres, even the Staples Center in L.A., colleges, corporate events, and festivals as far away as Ireland, Australia, and South Africa. Adams’ comedy style is unique, yet universally appealing. He is quick on his feet to deliver a powerful, clever, sophisticated, and fast paced routine that attacks topics from an angle that many people have never considered. Adams will perform three shows on Jan. 15 and 16. There is a two-drink minimum and patrons must be at least 18-year-old to attend. The Ice House is located at 24 N. Mentor Ave. in Pasadena. UCLA Scientists Test New Strategy That Could Help Fight Ovarian Cancer UCLA scientists have developed a promising novel method to treat gynecologic tumors. The approach focuses on a protein called p53, which is commonly mutated in women who have high-grade serous ovarian cancer, the deadliest form of reproductive cancer. In many women with the disease, the cancer is very advanced by the time it is diagnosed and is therefore difficult to treat. The discovery was the result of a three-year study co-led by Drs. David Eisenberg and Sanaz Memarzadeh, members of the UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center. The findings, which were published online in the

journal Cancer Cell, could ultimately lead to new targeted therapies for many other types of cancer carrying similar p53 mutations. P53 is known as the "guardian of the genome." It prevents damaged cells from reproducing by stopping their growth until the damage is repaired or, if the damage cannot be reversed, promotes cell death. But mutations, which are found in 96 percent of patients with high-grade serous ovarian tumors, can cause p53 to form clumps, or "aggregates," which impair the protein's normal function. As a result, the damaged cells are able to multiply uncontrolla-

bly, which can lead to cancer. The UCLA scientists developed and tested a peptide called ReACp53, which penetrates cancer cells and prevents mutated p53 from clumping together. The technique restores normal p53 function, causing death of the ovarian cancer cells. "Our lab has worked for 15 years on the protein aggregates that cause amyloid diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease," said Eisenberg, who also is a professor of biological chemistry and a member of the UCLADOE Institute. "These aggregates are organized as fibers that are 500 times smaller than the width of a hair, which

Christmas Tree Recycling Ends Jan. 9 The City of Duarte, through its franchised trash hauler, Burrtec Waste Industries, is providing a Christmas tree collection service for residential customers. Christmas trees will be collected on regular trash collection days until Jan. 9.

is quite a challenge." "This approach was originally developed for neurodegenerative diseases and we are now applying it to cancer therapy," said Alice Soragni, a UCLA postdoctoral scholar in Eisenberg's lab and first author of the study. "We identified the sticky segments of p53 that cause the protein to clump by using a computer algorithm, determined their structure and then designed ReACp53 to block this process," Soragni added. "This can keep the protein from clumping so it can do its job and kill cancer cells." The researchers isolated tumor cells from patients and grew them to reproduce small tumors in the lab dish. The "mini-tumors" are extremely useful for drug development because they faithfully replicate several features of the original cancer. "The results were remarkable, with significant shrinkage in patient-derived tumors," said Memarzadeh, who also is an associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology and thedirector of the G.O. Discovery Laboratory at the Eli and Edythe Broad Center of Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell

Research. She added that the approach produced no obvious side effects in a physiological model and that ReACp53 was very well tolerated. More than 80 percent of women with advanced stage high-grade serous ovarian cancer experience relapses

even after repeated surgeries and multiple rounds of chemotherapy, and this effective new approach to treat the disease could be a major step forward in preventing cancer from returning. More than 15,000 women a year in the U.S. die from all types of ovarian cancer.

‘Duarte’s Promise Volunteers’ Continue to Serve

Duarte was the first city in the San Gabriel Valley to join the national movement committed to enhancing the lives and futures of America’s youth. The Alliance challenges communities to make youth a priority by fulfilling five promises for children and teens: -Ongoing relationships with caring adults-parents,

mentors, tutors, coaches. -Safe places and structured activities during nonschool hours. -Marketable skills through effective education. -Opportunities to give back through community service. At a recent Duarte Kiwanis meeting, two Promise Fellows shared their

passion for volunteering and various opportunities to serve. Andrea Edwards has been partnering with the Duarte Senior Center – and has created the first Duarte Senior Center Chorus! The chorus was available during the holidays for performances (4 songs for $40). Diego Renteria shared

The time to act is now.” Because this new drug can be easily sold and trans-

ferred, this is a prime product for abuse by children and teenagers. Alcohol-related harm to California youth can present itself in several ways including death, injuries, assaults, sexual violence, unsafe sex, suicide attempts, and academic problems. “Alcohol is already abused by underage kids and drinking responsibly is a challenge for many adults,” said Senator Huff. “Adding powdered alcohol to this potent mix is akin to squirting gasoline on a wildfire. This is a problem that California does not need.”

The Gamble House in Pasadena Celebrates Milestone 50th Anniversary as a Museum

626-254-0455

January 14, 2016 marks the 50th Anniversary of the gift of the Gamble House from the Gamble Family to the City of Pasadena and the University of Southern California. The Gamble House is the most complete and best-preserved example of American Arts and Crafts style architecture. The house and furnishings were designed by famed architects Charles and Henry Greene in1908 for David and Mary Gamble of the Procter & Gamble Company. The house, designated a National Historic Landmark in 1978, is owned by the City of Pasadena and operated by the University of Southern California School Of Architecture. The Gamble House is open for public, docent-led tours and for spe-

cialty tours and programs.

Visitors continue to visit, week in and week out, from around the world to marvel at the beauty imbedded in every square foot of The Gamble House. They come to experience what Charles Greene called “architecture as a fine art”. Hailed by the American Institute of Architects as “formulators of a new and native architecture”, Charles Sumner Greene (1868-1957) and Henry Mather Greene (18701954) designed houses and furnishings a century ago that established a new paradigm for the art of architecture in the United States. Drawing on the skills of outstanding craftsmen, as well as their own polytechnic training,

formal architectural education, and natural artistic sensibilities, Greene and Greene created legendary living environments that were beautiful, functional and modern.

The flowering of the Greene’s careers together was brief and typically benefited a discriminating and wealthy clientele. They produced their most characteristic work between 1906 and 1914, primarily in and around Pasadena. Of their fully coordinated houses with interior furnishings, only the Gamble House survives intact. For more information on the Gamble House and their 50th Anniversary please visit www.gamblehouse.org.

Arcadia Monument Fundraiser - Public Invited to Dinner at Arcadia Elks Lodge

The Arcadia Vietnam War Monument (AVWM) committee is conducting a fundraising dinner at the Arcadia Elks Lodge #2025 on Jan. 23 to raise $35,000 needed to build a Vietnam War monument in the Arcadia County Park. This “Welcome Home” dinner is just one of a few fundraising efforts the AVWM committee, with help from the Arcadia Elks Lodge, has on tap prior to the monument’s dedication at L.A. County Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich’s annual “Salute To Veterans” in the Arcadia County Park on May 28, 2016. The AVWM Committee is comprised of Arcadia Elk Lodge members and Vietnam War veterans: Bobby Acosta, Dean Bowman, Dennis Bookings, Gene Glasco, and Hank August. Arcadia Elks Lodge Exalted Ruler Rob DiGioia is also on the AVWM Committee. DiGioia has been highly instrumental in organizing, marketing, and coordinating his Lodge’s support of the various community fund raising projects the AVWM Committee has been involved in. Dinner will include a choice of beverage, mixed green salad, rolls, and butter. The main entrée will be a sa-

vory pasta bar offering diners a selection of three different kinds of pastas and three separate toppings to choose from before the pasta and topping ingredients are individually pan-heated and plated. Dessert will be a “Patriot’s Parfait” of cake and strawberries. The program following dinner will entail awarding the Department of Defense approved Vietnam War Veteran lapel pin to any veteran in attendance who served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces from Nov. 1, 1955 to May 15, 1975, regardless of their location. Along with the pin, veterans will also receive a copy of the Presidential Proclamation commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War. There will be a 50/50 raffle with several items

available, including the stylish AVWM polo shirts and several valuable gift baskets provided by donors. The monument’s construction was inspired by Arcadia City Clerk Gene Glasco, a Vietnam veteran and Arcadia High School (AHS) graduate who says the monument has long been a vision of his as he has always had the desire to find a way to honor the men who lost their lives in the war, including 14 of whom went to AHS. All Vietnam era veterans and their families are invited to attend the dinner and patriotic program that follows, which will cost $20 per person. Will Call reservations can be made by calling the Arcadia Elks Lodge between the hours of 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., Monday through Friday, at (626) 445-2025.

Over 1.5 Million California Kids Are Suffering Traumatic Events Children Now released its 2016 California Children’s Report Card, which shows that the state is not doing enough to promote healing for the more than one million kids in our state who are experiencing trauma in

their lives. Issues like abuse, neglect, and witnessing violence at home can have serious long-term consequences for children, including health problems like diabetes and mental health challenges such as depression. In the

area of childhood trauma the state received a Report Card grade of “D-”, the report’s lowest grade and a strong indication that much more should be done to protect kids from trauma’s effects and build their resilience.

The Report Card provides a thorough assessment of the current status of California kids, to help ensure state leaders make informed policy decisions and keep kids our top priority. It assigns a letter grade to each of 31 key areas to children’s well-being, including early learning, health, and K-12 education. Children Now President Ted Lempert said the state’s low score in childhood trauma is troubling. “Children experiencing traumatic events can have difficulty functioning in all areas of their lives,” he said. “Trauma can impede emotional well-being, impact

school performance and set kids up for a lifetime of health problems. California must do more to assess children for trauma and find them the help they need to heal.” California kids fared better in other areas of the Report Card, including placement stability for foster kids (C), preschool (B-), and health insurance (A-). In areas where lawmakers have focused long-term attention and state resources - such as expanding health insurance, including increasing MediCal funding to cover undocumented kids - children saw significant benefits. In areas that have not received the

same attention, resources and reforms, like trauma, oral health (D+), and teacher training and evaluation (D), the state’s kids are getting shortchanged. State investments in critical areas like trauma will save money in the long term, Lempert said. “Kids with traumatic childhoods are more likely to become adults who need extra resources in everything from mental health, to employment, to criminal justice involvement. Providing kids with trauma assessment and support aren’t just the right things to do, they’re the smart things to do, economically.”

rose bowl Iowa Stops to Smell the Roses

STORY BY gus herrera The Stanford Cardinals secured a Rose Bowl victory in a 45-16 dominating performance over the Iowa Hawkeyes. This left many wondering if the heightened level of competition in the Pac-

12 Conference robbed them of a potential title run, especially since the other Big 10 school that made the College Football Playoffs, Michigan State, was utterly blown out on New Year’s Eve.

Throughout the 2015 season, fans across the country may not have gotten a chance to watch Stanford play, as many of their games aired during late-night, west coast time slots. This lack of showcase,

combined with the traditional east coast, SEC conference bias, might have cost sophomore Christian McCaffrey the Heisman trophy, but on Jan. 1 the running back silenced any doubters.

On the first play from scrimmage the Stanford offense came out in the shotgun formation, with McCaffrey flanking senior quarterback Kevin Hogan in the backfield. Once the ball was snapped Mc-

Stanford's Christian McCaffrey was named Rose Bowl MVP after his excellent performance on offense against the Iowa Hawkeyes (Above) and (Right).

The Iowa Hawkeyes huddle together before they take on Stanford.

Caffrey flew down the seam, catching a quick hitter from Hogan and taking it 75 yards to the house. He was literally untouched. Within seconds of stepping onto the Pasadena turf,

photos by trevor stamp McCaffrey effectively went through every NFL scout’s checklist, highlighting his formation versatility, route running, catching, elusiveness, and blazing speed. Blessed with NFL genes on his father’s

side and Olympian blood on his mother’s side, McCaffrey displays a natural stride and effortlessness when he runs the rock. A couple of drives later, at the beginning of the second

quarter, McCaffrey did something he had surprisingly not done during this past year’s record-breaking campaign. He returned a punt 63 yards for a touchdown, once again proving that there is nothing he

cannot do on the gridiron. This touchdown solidified Stanford’s dominance, giving them a commanding 21-0 lead. Iowa did not score until three minutes left into the third quarter, when it finally

managed to notch three points on a 39-yard field goal. Moreover, Hawkeye fans had to wait until the fourth quarter to see their team hit paydirt on a 36yard touchdown pass from quarterback C.J. Beathard.

All in all, the game was never much of a contest, but McCaffrey managed to provide enough electricity to get fans fired up to see how he continues his mastery of the game in the New Year.

Stanford warms up ahead of their Rose Bowl game against Iowa.

The Stanford Cardinal head coach, David Shaw, holds up dominated the Leishman Trophy after defeating the Iowa Hawkeyes with a 45-16 win.
