Soaring Over Paradise in 127th Rose Parade in Pasadena BY TERRY MILLER

In a few hours, all the floats participating in the annual Rose Parade will be tooling down Colorado Blvd. in front of hundreds of thousands of fans, still cameras, and television crews sending images to audiences the world over. But what makes all these floats so unique is the volunteer effort that put the finishing touches to the major designs at the two major float builders, as well as the smaller float builders like Sierra Madre Rose Float Association. Hundreds of hours are devoted each year to the tiniest details; using seeds and flowers to create the designer’s vision. It is estimated that it takes 60 volunteers working 10 hours a day for 10 days to decorate one float. Every square inch of the exposed surface of a float entered in the Rose Parade must be covered with flowers or other natural materials. The rules are strict. These other decorative applicants include bark, seeds, SEE PAGE 4

Harabedian Seeks Re-Election in Sierra Madre

Former Sierra Madre Mayor and current Councilmember John Harabedian has announced that he plans to seek reelection to the Sierra Madre City Council in the upcoming April 12, 2016 election. Harabedian, along with Mayor Capoccia, was elected to a four-year term on the City Council in April 2012, and desires to return for a second term. “It’s been an honor to serve Sierra Madre over the past four years,” Harabedian stated. “During that time, we have made great strides in solving some of the real challenges facing the City–

including our budget and water issues – and I believe we need experienced leadership over the next four years to finish the job. That’s why I am running for reelection.” “The City would be lucky to have Mayor Capoccia for another four years on City Council,” Harabedian noted. “I hope the citizens give both of us the opportunity to continue the work we have been doing on Council since being elected in 2012.” The nomination period for two four-year City Council seats opened on Dec. 21, 2015, and closes on Jan. 15, 2016. Capoccia and Har-

abedian both have pulled nomination papers.

4.4 Earthquake Strikes Los Angeles Tuesday Night

noW, There iS AnoTher ChoiCe... Chapman Funeral Homes are very proud to open our own Funeral Home here in the San Gabriel Valley. Owners Terry & Mary Harmon have a long history in the area and in the Funeral Industry. We are honored when a family calls for our assistance. We are available 24 hours and do our best to accommodate your needs and keep your costs down.

The recent 4.4 magnitude earthquake in Devore Tuesday reminds us that a catastrophic earthquake could occur at a moment’s notice. The Los Angeles County region is vulnerable to large-scale earthquakes. The Los Angeles County Office of Emergency Management (OEM) wants to remind all County residents to take the necessary steps to prepare for earthquakes. The following are some preparedness tips on what to do during an earthquake: - When you are in public places, be aware of your surroundings and identify your safe spaces. If you experience shaking, the recommended actions are to Drop under a piece of furniture. Take Cover under the piece of furniture by protecting your head and neck with one arm/ hand. Hold On to the piece of furniture’s leg to keep it from shifting or uncovering you until the shaking completely stops. Learn more atwww.DropCoverHoldOn. org. - Do not run out of buildings during an earthquake as most people are injured by falling debris as they try to exit buildings during the shaking. - If you experience shak-

ing and are in a wheelchair, lock your wheels; cover your head and neck area with a pillow or some type of object that will deflect the debris from falling on to you. To receive emergency notifications, register your cellular telephone and landlines at Alert LA County, go to http://lacounty.gov/ emergency/alert-la. For more information on how to prepare for earthquakes and other hazards and threats, OEM has available the following emergency preparedness programs: - County of Los Angeles Emergency Survival Guide – http://lacoa.org - Specific Needs Awareness Planning – https:// snap.lacounty.gov - Emergency Survival Program available at http:// www.espfocus.org Los Angeles County residents, renters, and business owners, including persons with disabilities and others with access and functional needs, may call 211 LA County for emergency preparedness information, and other referral services. On Friday morning, Dec. 25, 2015, two friends took off on a lofty Christmas goal around 7:30 in the morning, hike as many mountain peaks as possible in the Angeles National Forrest. Being somewhat experienced hikers, the pair carried proper equipment and a personal emergency G.P.S. beacon. As Christmas day came to a close, the pair of friends attempted to make their way back to their vehicle parked near mile marker 30.5, in the Angeles Forest above La Canada. However, the ladies became disoriented after sunset with the loss of light. The trail disappeared and they thought they could climb up to Angeles Crest Highway when they got caught by the darkness, the cold and a cliff. They called 911 but lost

cell service. Fortunately for them they had their emergency G.P.S. beacon. The pair of hikers activated their beacon and it sent their G.P.S. coordinates to a national call center which in turn notified The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. This activation placed them at the Oak Wild Campground. Seven members of the Montrose Search Rescue Team were activated and left their Christmas dinner at home to rescue the pair of hikers. As they closed in on the coordinates, the Search Team located them approximately 500 feet up a hillside stuck on a cliff. Search team members were able to reach them and lowered them down the hillside with ropes. The search and rescue operation ended around 2 a.m. on Dec. 26th, 2015.

The hitch team’s upcoming visit to Pasadena, Calif. is one of hundreds of appearances it will make this year, never failing to draw a crowd wherever they go. and leaves. Decorating with the non-perishable materials is performed first. In the days following Christmas, the live additions to the float are applied by volunteers or hired workers. Many people end each day covered in glue and petals. Delicate flowers are placed in individual vials of water and set into the float one-by-one. The Tournament of Roses is the largest consumer of flowers in the world, and flowers arrive from all over the world. An event as large as the Tournament of Roses re-

quires about 80,000 hours of combined manpower each year. That manpower is supplied by 935 members of the non-profit Tournament of Roses Association, a volunteer organization dedicated to presenting an internationally-recognized New Year’s celebration. Each volunteer is assigned to one of 31 committees, with responsibilities ranging from selecting parade participants to directing visitors on New Year's Day, to hosting the press headquarters for media coverage

Nicknamed "White Suiters" because of the distinctive white uniform every volunteer wears, these enthusiastic men and women give up their evenings, weekends, and holidays to ensure the success of the parade and game. A small full-time staff provides support and continuity to the volunteer organization. Directly after the parade, floats are stripped to their chassis. Structural steel elements are reused where possible; organic materials and sculptural steel are recycled. Shortly after each year's parade is over and the next year's parade theme is announced, the parade sponsors and participating communities start to plan their floats for the following year. A "theme draft" meeting is held in mid-February where builders select their float theme.

Local Agent Will Buy Your Home for Cash

Every month, thousands of homeowners are faced with the stressful dilemma of whether to buy first or sell first. You see, if you buy before selling, you could run the risk of owning two homes. Or, just as bad, if you sell first, you could end up homeless. It’s what insiders in the industry call the Real Estate Catch 22, and it’s an extremely anxious position to be in. This financial and emotional tightrope is one you usually have to walk alone because most agents have no way of helping you with this predicament. But one local realtor is using a unique

s I write this last column of the year, my mind is occupied with details of this Thursday’s New Year’s Eve on Myrtle event. Although it is our fifth annual (thanks to Blaze Pizza, our event sponsor), somehow the details and planning do not get any easier. Maybe that means we will never be boring … So here is what is new for New Year’s Eve: the band is Night Owl, and it is the best of Night Owl. The band is trendy, professional, and absolutely wonderful. The family-friendly area has totally free games, crafts, and rides: including a rock climbing wall, inflatables, and other cool adventures – oh, and did I say totally free? Thank you Santa Anita YMCA and Kiwanis of Monrovia! And our M.C. is the amazing Karen McNair from the YMCA who will be supported by the ever-popular Kerri Zessau from the City of Monrovia. You cannot beat that. Although both of our street banners were destroyed in the wind, it looks like social media has saved the day. Thank you Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Al Gore for the World Wide Web. I am getting calls from literally eve-

rywhere asking about hotels, restaurants, and parking. That is a good thing. And, did I mention parking is always free in Old Town? Then, when it is all over and the holidays are but a memory, what is left? Well, Friday, Jan. 8 is Street Fair; Feb. 1 kicks off the Valentine’s Day drawing entry; March 1 begins Spring Fling; April 30 is the Cinco de Mayo event … so it never really ends in Old Town Monrovia, does it? As for the promised 2015 Old Town grand openings, at least we got Le Gourmand, Stan’s Vac and Sew, 38 Degrees, Lemon Drop Cookies, Namaste Beauty, 3 Beauty Bar, and Sauté Culinary Academy. We are still waiting for Bottega, The Saltner, Copper Still Grill, Press Café, Frost My Cake, and the mystery businesses said to replace Bull Taco on East Lemon Avenue and Los Guerros on the 400 block of West Myrtle Avenue. The Saltner and Bottega plan to open during the first quarter of 2016. With all the change, one thing remains certain for 2016: the heart of Monrovia will still be Old Town. Check us out at www.OldTownMonroviaCA.com, or “Like” us on Facebook.

Frank Ferrante Brings Groucho Marx Back to Pasadena By Nathaniel Cayanan This January, award winning actor Frank Ferrante will bring his much loved production “An Evening with Groucho” back to the Pasadena Playhouse. The one-man-show features Ferrante performing the songs, dance routines, and stand up of legendary comedian Groucho Marx during the prime of Marx’s ca-

reer in the 1920s and ‘30s. What is most interesting about Ferrante and his show is that, for more than 30 years he has spent a large part of his career playing Marx all over the world, yet he is still able to make each and every performance seem new and fresh. Such skill takes a specific type of admiration and dedication to the material, which was evident during an interview when Ferrante talked in depth with both

an academic and personal sensibility about Groucho Marx, his brothers, and the era of comedy from which they came. Perhaps this long career, spanning decades was written in the stars when Ferrante watched his first Marx brothers’ movie, or maybe it was the day when he was a boy and he saw Marx in person, a day he remembers vividly. His father had taken the day off to take him to the Ambas-

sador Hotel in Los Angeles where an 86-year-old Groucho Marx was making an appearance to promote a new book. Even though Marx was three hours late and there was a multitude of people vying to see the comic legend, Ferrante was able to get a seat at “at his feet,” as he described. While Marx had long past his prime and was quite ill from old age, he was still able to answer questions from the audience with caustic, clever, and hilarious one-liners. Case in point, when asked if he was making any more movies - and again, Marx was 86 and ailing - he responded after a long pause, “No, I’m answering stupid questions,” which Ferrante said in the voice of an aged Marx. “That image of him carried with me,” Ferrante continued, an image that carried over to his coursework at the University of Southern California where he studied theatre and, under advisement from a mentor, created a one man show about Marx. This was when Ferrante was discovered by Marx’s son, Arthur, who hired Ferrante to portray Marx in his play, “Groucho: A Life in Revue,” which was

adapted into a PBS television special. Since then, in more than 400 cities around the world, Ferrante has played Marx in nearly every era of his life, as young as Marx in teens to his twilight years. And even after almost a century since Marx first graced the stage and screen with his comedy, Ferrante believes that Marx’s humor still holds up today. “I think his humor transcends,” Ferrante said, “it’ll go on long after you and I have left the planet.” Now, 2,500 perfor- Frank Ferrante in “An Evening With Groumances later, Ferrante cho.” - Photo by Michael Doucett still gets a high playing Marx, especially since across culture and gender he never completely knows and age.” And, when asked if what he will do or say next he ever gets tired of playing in a show, nor does his pi- Marx, Ferrante responded, ano player. The Gamble House in Pasadena Celebrates Milestone as Museum Jan. 14, 2016 will mark the 50th Anniversary of the gifting of the Gamble House from the Gamble family to the City of Pasadena and the University of Southern California (USC). The Gamble House is the most complete and bestpreserved example of American Arts and Crafts style architecture. The house and furnishings were designed by famed architects Charles and Henry Greene in 1908 for David and Mary Gamble of the Procter & Gamble Company. The house, designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1978, is owned by the City of Pasadena and operated by the USC School of Architecture. The Gamble House is open for public, docent-led tours and for specialty tours and programs. On Jan. 14, 1966, members of the Gamble family, the City of Pasadena, and USC signed a formal gift agreement, and in September of that year the doors of the Gamble House were opened to the public. In the half century since then, The Gamble House has become one of the most beloved premier histor-

ic sites in America. A series of celebratory anniversary events will take place throughout September 2016 including: an invitation-only dinner for major donors, a fundraising reception to kick off a new endowment campaign to raise funds to continue to protect the Gamble family’s generous legacy gift to the public with another decade of conscientious preservation, a reception to recognize the contributions of Gamble House docents through the years, an Alumni Day open house for former Gamble House Scholars in residence and the USC School of Architecture, and a 50th Anniversary public celebration on Sunday, Sept. 25 with self-paced tours and family-friendly activities and entertainment. Visitors continue to visit week in and week out from around the world to marvel at the beauty embedded in every square foot of The Gamble House. They come to experience what Charles Greene called “architecture as a fine art.” Hailed by the American Institute of Ar-

chitects as “formulators of a new and native architecture,” Charles Sumner Greene (1868–1957) and Henry Mather Greene (1870–1954) designed houses and furnishings a century ago that established a new paradigm for the art of architecture in the United States. Drawing on the skills of outstanding craftsmen, as well as their own polytechnic training, formal architectural education, and natural artistic sensibilities, Greene and Greene created legendary living environments that were beautiful, functional and modern. The flowering of the Greenes’ careers together was brief and typically benefited a discriminating and wealthy clientele. They produced their most characteristic work between 1906 and 1914, primarily in and around Pasadena. Of their fully coordinated houses with interior furnishings, only the Gamble House survives intact. For more information on the Gamble House and their 50th Anniversary please visit www.gamblehouse.org.

All You Need Is Love … But You Have to Have a Copy of ‘Beatles Gear: The Ultimate Edition’ By terry miller

W

ith “Beatles Gear: All The Fab Four’s Instruments From Stage to Studio – The Ultimate Edition” (December 2015, Backbeat Books, $60), “Andy Babiuk has written one of the most influential Beatles books yet,” … so said the press release that accompanied a copy of the book that landed on my desk. Bold statement indeed, but as I started to read the book … man, Babiuk’s publishers, Backbeat Books, deserve a thunderous round of applause akin to the screams of fans at the Beatles’ Shea Stadium gig in 1965. The exhaustive research that has gone into this book, combined with some photos I had never seen before, make this a must-bloody-have book if you call yourself a Beatles aficionado. It is the backstory that

is really interesting, not only about Vox amps, but every guitar, bass, Ringo’s initial Premier kit, and then the legendary Ludwigs that undoubtedly sent Ludwig sales skyrocketing … every kid playing drums wanted a kit like Ringo’s. Unfortunately for me, I ended up with a crappy Japanese knock-off brand called Majestic that looked like Ludwig’s (from a great distance) and sounded like crap, but they were drums and I was learning beats using trash cans.

“This is why the book is so comprehensive,” says Babiuk. “In the years since I wrote the original ‘Beatles Gear’ (2001), I kept discovering more stories, more secrets, and photos that have never been published before.” The 500-plus-page “Beatles Gear: The Ultimate Edition” includes many previously unseen photographs, a cache of rare memorabilia, and a unique collection of authentic Beatles instruments. Shown in luscious quality throughout the book are 43 of the group’s original instruments, many still owned by ex-members of the Beatles or their heirs, from George’s psychedelic Strat to John’s “Bed In” Gibson, and Ringo’s roof top Ludwig kit to Paul’s Hofner violin bass. “Beatles Gear: The Ultimate Edition” also played a key role in the recently auctioned John Lennon Gibson guitar, and that part alone in

the book reads like a detective story. Babiuk predicted that this guitar would be sold for the highest price an instrument ever achieved, and he was recently proved

JANUARY 9-10, 2016

to be correct. On Nov. 7, the guitar was sold at Julien’s Auctions for $2.41 million. “I got to play the guitar - it was bone-chilling,” Babiuk says. “It’s just a really cool histori-

cal find, kind of a crazy story.” It is exactly this kind of crazy story that makes “Beatles Gear: The Ultimate Edition” an absolute must-have for all Beatles fans.

Artists Across America Band Together for Those Affected by Paris Attacks

After the horrific events in Paris on Nov. 13, 2015 that resulted in the tragic deaths of Long Beach State design student Nohemi Gonzalez, British musician Nick Alexander, and many others; Lauren D’Imperio, founder of Protect Our Futures and a recent college graduate and musician, wanted to do something that endures the memories of both Nohemi and Nick. “I’m 23, and I’m a musician. It could have been me; it could have been my brother. This really hit home for me,” said D’Imperio, who was truly touched by the stories of the victims, particularly Nohemi Gonzalez and Nick Alexander. So D’Imperio reached out to Kimberly James, owner and CEO of CBM Records, who has a professional relationship with Streaming for Charity. Streaming for Charity allows charities, events, and celebrities to stream a 30-minute online concert, with the proceeds benefiting the charity of the programmer’s choosing. D’Imperio and James approached Streaming for Charity, and the #StreamingForParis concert was born. D’Imperio will host and perform the first segment of this event, which will be held on Jan. 30, 2016. The rest of the online concert will include CBM Records

County Undertakes Historic Effort to Determine Park Needs in Every Community Los Angeles County has begun a historic parks needs assessment that will shed light on access to parks across the County, and list steps the county can take to make parks more accessible for all residents. This needs assessment goes far beyond any studies conducted previously, using a broad set of park metrics to evaluate park space and offering both cities and residents significant input into the process. The assessment will identify need based on park acreage, park access, park use, park condition, and the number and type of park amenities available in communities. Los Angeles County residents will now have the unique opportunity to shape the priorities for how and where parking funding will go for the next several decades at nearly 200 community meetings throughout the County, to be held between December 2015 and February 2016. Information regarding meetings in each community can be found on the Park Needs Assessment website at www.lacountyparkneeds.org. This site also provides background in-

formation on the Park Needs Assessment. This comprehensive assessment began over the summer by collecting input on the status of every park in Los Angeles County from all 88 cities and the unincorporated areas. More than a dozen components are being analyzed and weighed, including quantity, proximity and overall quality of parks available to residents, as well as the specific quality of individual facilities and amenities within each park. “It’s absolutely critical that all residents across Los Angeles County have access to thriving, high quality parks. For the first time, this assessment will allow us to truly understand the park needs of every community within the county,” said Rita Robinson, Park Needs Assessment Project Director for the County Department of Parks and Recreation. “We know that access to parks is so important to the health and quality of life of all communities. And, it is so important for all LA County residents to attend these meetings and tell us what they believe the

priorities for park and open space should be. The needs assessment will substantially increase the amount of information Los Angeles County decision-makers have available to determine the park and recreation needs of residents across the region. The quality of individual parks will be compared based on hard data and feedback from people living in each community. Most importantly, this process will allow LA County residents to weigh-in on what they believe the priority projects for park and open space should be. A final report with key findings and estimated costs from the assessment will be presented to the Board of Supervisors in May 2016. With regard to negotiations between Japan and the Republic of Korea on this issue, the government has been closely monitoring developments since the beginning of Foreign Ministry director general-level talks between Japan and the Republic of Korea on April 16, 2014. The Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office (TECRO) in Japan was instructed to gather related information, convey the government’s solemn position on the issue, and demand that any positive outcomes be extended in kind to Taiwan’s comfort women, so as to properly resolve the issue. Prior to the meeting on this issue between the foreign ministers of Japan and the Republic of Korea on Dec. 28, the Ministry of

Korean women, known as “Comfort Women,” were abused sexually by Japanese soldiers during WWII.

Foreign Affairs and TECRO approached the Japanese government simultaneously in Taipei and Tokyo. In addition to expressing the ROC’s solemn and unwavering position, they sternly demanded once again that Japan

open talks with the ROC as soon as possible. MOFA has also been working closely over the long term with the Taipei Women’s Rescue Foundation, which has been dedicated to helping comfort women for years.

In his remarks on Aug. 14 this year to mark the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II, Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe conveyed the country’s deepest remorse and apologies regarding its actions in the war.

He also expressed Japan’s regret over the “women behind the battlefields whose honor and dignity were severely injured.” President Ma Ying-jeou, in response to Abe’s remarks, said Aug. 15 that the ROC government

believes that Japan is willing to reflect on and examine its past actions, and urged Japan to do more, and do better, especially with respect to comfort women. The government’s stance is that Japan should apologize and provide compensation to Taiwan’s comfort women. The government of Japan fully understands the ROC position. Active communication is ongoing in Taipei between Chang Jen-joe, Secretary General of the Association of East Asian Relations, and Takashi Hamada, Secretary General of the Interchange Association (Japan), Taipei Office, and in Tokyo between ROC Representative Shen Ssu-tsun and Imai Tadashi, President of the Interchange Association (Japan). In the next few days, the ROC government will convene a working group to formulate an updated demand with which to approach Japan for the swift opening of talks and positive reply to its requests, calling on Japan to deal with the matter of Taiwan’s comfort women in a responsible manner, so as to deliver the justice and dignity that the victims deserve.

proper that it was a topic I delved on. During a holiday party at the elementary school my daughter had gone to, its headmaster remarked to me that kids choose the high school and university they want to attend. But it is parents who pick out where their children will spend their early years of learning. What a true statement! And because parents are wholly accountable for choosing the institution that will lay the foundation for their children’s future, it becomes ever more important for us to be mindful of that responsibility. In the past twelve months, I have spoken to district superintendents, heads of school, and administrators. It is immensely reassuring that the men and women I met have made their students’ welfare and wellbeing their life’s work. They are constantly finding ways to make children’s learning experience challenging yet nurturing, and as engaging as it is fulfilling. They are taking seriously their charge of turning out young people who are not only ready for middle and high school, college, and beyond, but also as

morally principled citizens of the world. It has been my distinct privilege to have met and known these amazing individuals who head school districts and learning institutions. In their very capable hands, America’s future looks very promising indeed! Thank you, educators all, for giving me the opportunity to get to know you. I look forward to writing about where you will be taking your students in the years to come.

MESSAGES FROM HEADS OF SCHOOLS

“During the holiday season our efforts and thoughts turn to giving. The season affords all of us a great opportunity to reflect on our blessings and realize the true meaning of the season. The staff and students of Alhambra Unified School District (AUSD) are very busy at this time of year with schoolwork, performances, and events. But even with all this, our students and staff continue to find time to think of others and reach out to those less fortunate.

“On behalf of AUSD, I would like to extend our wish that the joy, peace, and contentment of the season be yours. We wish you good health, the pleasure of spending special time with family and friends, and a New Year filled with love, hope and optimism.” Dr. Gary Gonzales Assistant Superintendent, Educational Services - Alhambra Unified School District “As we enter the new year it is important to reflect on the many blessings that surround us in Arcadia. I am particularly thankful to get up each morning and come to work with such dedicated and caring people, and in a community with exceptionally caring parents. I came to Arcadia in 2005 looking for a job and what I found was the Arcadia family and a home. It is truly a blessing to walk alongside all of you in our efforts to be a world-class school district for every student we serve. Thank you all.” David Vannasdall Superintendent - Arcadia Unified School District “We find ourselves at the end of 2015 – an extraorSEE NEXT PAGE

While we anticipate an even better 2016, I would like to celebrate the dedication and achievements of our students, parents, teachers, and staff that make our district such a special place. “More of our graduates are moving on to institutes of higher education, and attaining prestigious careers in a variety of fields. Through our Engineering and Medical Pathways, spanning our elementary, middle and high schools, we are providing critical learning opportunities and hands-on experiences that prepare our children for life beyond our doors. “The work we do would not be possible without the collaborative spirit and positive working relationships we share. Thank you to all our partners and our community for supporting our mission to bolster student success. I wish you a peaceful and safe holiday season filled with the company of great friends and family.” Dr. Linda Kaminski Superintendent - Azusa Unified School District “The holidays are often regarded as a time of gift giving and reflection. There is nothing more rewarding than watching the eyes of our students light up in the classroom when they are truly engaged in learning. The wonder and curiosity instilled in the minds of our students by our teachers is life changing. “It is through our collective encouragement and our belief that every child can succeed that makes the Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) and the communities we serve vibrant and strong. “I wish to thank our parents, extended family members, and partners for your support and for your many contributions in enriching

the educational opportunities of our students. Through your support at home, engagement in school, and abundant donations of time and charitable support, PUSD students are better off. Thank you for your care and spirit of service to our students. “On behalf of PUSD, my best wishes to you and your families during the holidays. Thank you for making PUSD a district of First Choice. “Students, see you back at school on Monday, Jan. 4, 2016.” Dr. Brian McDonald Superintendent - Pasadena Unified School District “In the spirit of this holiday season, I want to extend my appreciation to our staff and families for all that they do to ensure that our students are being offered one of the best gifts – that of a quality education. As we enjoy the holidays, it is my heartfelt wish that each one of us receives and returns the blessings and sense of hope that make these days truly special. “Best wishes to you and your family during this holiday season and in the coming year from all of us in the Temple City Unified School District.” Dr. Kathryn E. Perini Superintendent - Temple City Unified School District “The holiday season, in part, is about the re-awakening within ourselves of the qualities and aspirations that move us forward from merely ‘coping and existing to striving and achieving.’ “True education awakens and renews those timeless qualities, embraced in Christmas and other holiday traditions, and brings freshness and vitality to individual student journeys. Nafie, Ph.D. Headmaster - Clairbourn School “Christmas is a very special time for schools of the Holy Child as we give thanks for all our blessings, especially the perfect gift of love found in a baby lying in a manger. May this holy season be filled with rich graces, and may the new year bring joy and peace in abundance.” Kate Morin Head of School - Mayfield Senior School of the Holy Child “During this special time of year, we at Saint Mark’s School are thankful for the sounds of the season: the angelic singing voices of the students during the Christmas program, the soft hum of excitement from the classrooms as students wrap their handmade gifts for their parents, the loud bursts of laughter during the faculty and staff luncheon, and the exchange of ‘Happy Holidays!’ between friends and families around campus. From all of us at Saint Mark’s School, best wishes for a joyous and festive season!” Jennifer Tolbert

Head of School - Saint Mark’s School “As the year draws to a close, we are more aware than ever of the need to educate our children to engage in their communities and the world, to be open and think creatively about solutions to complex problems, and to act where they see need. Our students constantly remind us how beautiful our

world is and how great our future can be. This holiday season, all of us at Westridge wish that you are inspired by the hopes and dreams of the youngsters in our midst, and that we can all work together to find peace, joy, and understanding.” Elizabeth J. Eat Feed Love By J. Shadé Quintanilla Eat Feed Love, a new business based in Southern California and Victoria, Canada, creates an opportunity for their customers to purchase delicious goods while also giving them a chance to help feed the millions of people suffering from hunger worldwide. The online grocery

company stands by the belief that there is a solution to world hunger. According to their website, there is enough food produced annually to feed the hungry, but due to a number of factors, like environmental conditions and political unrest, there is an unequal distribution of food. While the company does not think ending world hunger will be easy, Eat Feed Love aims to help by selling gro-

ceries and donating part of their profits to charities dedicated to eliminating world hunger. Since their launch in September, Eat Feed Love has fed close to 50,000 people, and with every purchase made, the number will keep growing. The idea for the food ecommerce platform started with three friends and their pug, Cedric. Owners of Olive the Senses, an olive oil tasting store in Victoria, they decided to expand but also give back. Inspired by other conscious companies like Tom’s and Make a Stand, they started Eat Feed Love to sell great food and help end world hunger. But for Miguel Gauthier, one of the owners, the mission to help end world hunger is very personal. Losing his mother at a young age, Gauthier had to work at various jobs to help provide for himself and his family. “I understand what it’s like to not always know where your next meal is coming from or where you’re going to sleep that night, and it’s a really, really terrible place to be in,” he said. food and his goal to help feed people who are in similar situations he once was in, Gauthier, his brother, sister-in-law, and best friend created a grocery store for socially-conscious shoppers. Eat Feed Love sells food products through their website to customers all over North America. From condiments, jams, and spreads, to oils and kitchenware, the online grocery store sells products mostly found at farmers markets. For every purchase a customer makes, the company donates to one of their partner charities dedicated to eliminating hunger through sustainable methods. Their partner organizations include World Vision, Feed the Children, Mercy Ships, and Canadian Foodgrains Bank. So far, Eat Feed Love has helped feed Syrian refugees, infants in Madagascar, and taught people around the world about improved farming practices and food security. With products about the same price as similar products at grocery stores, like Ralphs and Whole Foods, Gauthier believes that Eat Feed Love gives shoppers an option to buy what they need and give back. “I think most people would love the idea of ending world hunger,” he said. “The problem is that no one knows how to go about doing it,” he continued. “So, we thought if we build a platform that allows people to make a difference by simply choosing where to buy their groceries, then I think it becomes very easy for all of us to kind of do our part.” To purchase groceries from Eat Feed Love, please visit www.eatfeedlove.com.

anta Anita Park officials reported 44,873 were on hand for the Southern California track's traditional day-after-Christmas opening on Saturday, the largest opening-day attendance since 1994. On-track handle was $3,507,248, up slightly from 2014 ($3,431,886) but the fourth lowest opening-day on-track wagering total since 1974.

This year's on-track attendance and total wagering translates to a $78 per capita for everyone who clicked through the turnstiles. This year's Santa Anita opening-day per capita of $78 marks the continuation of a downward trend, according to some experts. According to the Paulick Report, an online horse racing website, “In 2005, when opening day attracted 34,590, on-track handle was $5,880,998, a per capita of S L U M B E R

$170. Five years later, in 2010, it was down to $112. Last year's per capita for the 40,810 attendees was $84. It's hard to see the glass as half full through those numbers.”

Some of the world’s top jockeys like Mike Smith, Victor Espinoza, and Gary Stevens didn’t disappoint the 44,000 plus fans who showed up en masse on Boxing Day, the traditional opening day of the winter meet. - Photos by Terry Miller
