Charles Meier, Paradiso Float Designer, Is to the Manor Born: ‘Downton Abbey,’ That Is

BY TERRY MILLER According to a press release, acclaimed drama “Downton Abbey” on Masterpiece on PBS will get a special treat on New Year’s Day when a new float celebrating the show debuts in the 127th Rose Parade® on Jan. 1, 2016. The Crawley family estate has been painstakingly recreated for the float, complete with a magnificent landscape depicting English rose gardens and rolling green lawns and a 1919 Bentley driven by the family chauffeur. The float, themed “The Final Adventure” (a nod and a wink to the Rose Parade’s theme of “Find Your Adventure”), celebrates the final season “Downton Abbey” on PBS beginning Jan. 3, 2016, at 9 p.m. eastern time. The float will feature more than 60,000 roses in 20 different varieties, including velvety Roseberry and Cherry O; fragile pink Titanic and Priceless; and English garden roses, rarely seen on Rose Parade floats. Oriental lilies, snapdragons, hypericum, and a variety of orchids will provide accents throughout the garden. SEE PAGE 4

Le Cordon Bleu Says ‘Au Revoir’ BY TERRY MILLER

BY J. SHADÉ QUINTANILLA This past weekend was tragic for a group of Pasadena mourners. As they gathered to mourn the death of a man who was shot dead on Friday night, they were interrupted by the same gun and gang violence that took away their loved one’s life. On Sunday night, at a

vigil held for Robert Calderon, 27, an argument between gang members erupted in gunfire in the 100 block of West Claremont Street, less than two miles away from the unfortunate shooting of Calderon. As both sides exchanged gunfire, a young woman at the vigil was shot twice. The 20-yearold woman was immediately rushed to the hospital and is

currently in stable condition. She suffered injuries to her forearm and stomach. Police say an unknown group of gang members attacked mourners at the vigil, but they could not determine whether the gunman was after the entire group or a specific person. On Saturday, Dec. 19th, 2015 staff from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Education Based Incarceration (EBI) Unit worked with The Dream Center and Justin Turner of the Los Angeles Dodgers to spread some holiday cheer to children who were visiting their mothers and loved ones at the Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood. After their visit, all children were given a toy. Children, whose mothers were enrolled in an EBI program (high school classes, vocational classes. etc.), were given a brand new bicycle. Justin Turner of the Dodgers said, “This is what it’s all about, seeing a smile on a child’s face is the best feeling.” Matthew Barnett, Founder of The Dream Center said, “It was a nobrainer to partner with the LA Sheriff’s Department for this event, they do so much to serve the communities.” Sergeant Peter Gomez commented, "The entire event was a success. We know that the holiday season can be an emotional

time. It's hard on the mothers who are in jail and it is especially hard on their children who come visit them. So we did what we could to shed a little joy during Christmas time. All the hard work to coordinate an event like this was worth it, when we saw the huge smiles on children's faces as they saw gifts being passed out by Santa. It was fun to see the kids riding their new bikes that were passed out to them by Justin Turner of the Dodgers and The Dream Center." local news California and New York Ranked Last for Economic Opportunity

California is losing employers and jobs to other states due to its abysmal business climate. Except for New York, nowhere else in the United States has a worse combination of government spending, taxation, and labor-market restrictions, according to the Economic Freedom of North America: 2015 Annual Report, a new report from the Fraser Institute in Vancouver, in partnership with the Oakland-based Independent Institute. “California’s dismal level of economic freedom

explains why more than 9,000 California companies have either fled the Golden State or decided to expand operations elsewhere during the past 7 years,” said Dr. Lawrence J. McQuillan, Senior Fellow and Director of the Independent Institute’s Center on Entrepreneurial Innovation. “The California Dream is disappearing for too many people who have decided to pack up and pursue their passions in other states because of oppressive California taxes, regulations, and lawsuit abuse.” While California and

New York have the least economic freedom in the nation, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Texas, Florida, and Tennessee have the most, according to the report. The report’s rankings are of tremendous use to members of the public and the policy community who seek a better business climate for their state, especially as election season approaches. “Years of government overreach have robbed California of its reputation as a land of economic opportunity,” said David J. Theroux,

Founder and President of the Independent Institute. “Fortunately, the Economic Freedom of North America: 2015 Annual Report provides a sound benchmark to show which states are doing a better job for workers and businesses. Its vital findings warrant close attention from policymakers in Sacramento and other state capitals, as well as from the news media and the public.” Economic Freedom of North America: 2015 Annual Report is an offshoot of the Fraser Institute’s Economic Freedom of the

Anxiety Raises Risk for Dementia People who experienced high anxiety any time in their lives had a 48 percent higher risk of developing dementia compared to those who had not, according to a new study led by USC researchers. The findings were based on an examination of 28 years of data from the Swedish Adoption Twin Study of Aging, overseen by the Karolinska Institutet of Sweden. The study sample involved 1,082 participants – twins, fraternal and identical – who completed in-person tests every three years, answered several questionnaires and were screened for dementia throughout the study. Many other studies have explored the link between dementia and psychological variables such as depression and neuroticism. However, this study established that the anxiety-dementia link was independent of the role of depression as a risk factor. “Anxiety, especially in older adults, has been relatively understudied compared to depression,” said Andrew Petkus, the study’s lead author and postdoctoral research associate of psychology in the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences. “Depression seems more evident in adulthood, but it’s usually episodic. Anxiety, though, tends to be a chronic lifelong problem, and that’s why people tend to write off anxiety as part of someone’s personality.” A final draft of the study was made available online last week in Alzheimer’s & Dementia: The Journal of

the Alzheimer’s Association. The researchers noted that the subjects had selfreported various levels of anxiety, which may or may not meet the clinical diagnostic threshold of a psychiatric anxiety disorder. Even so, the twin who developed dementia had a history of higher levels of anxiety compared to the twin who did not develop dementia. The subjects with anxiety who later developed dementia “are people that experience more than usual symptoms of anxiety,” said study co-author Margaret Gatz, a professor of psychology in the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences, who holds joint appointments in the USC Davis School of Gerontology and the Keck School of Medicine of USC. “They are people who you would say operate at a ‘high level of anxiety,’” said Gatz, also a foreign adjunct professor for the Karolinska Insitutet. She said they are fidgety. “They are frantic, frazzled people.” To determine whether anxiety levels correlated to dementia risk, researchers compared those who reported high anxiety with those who reported lower anxiety levels. “Those in the high anxiety group were about 1.5 times more likely to develop dementia,” Petkus said. Petkus said people who have high levels of anxiety tend to have higher levels of stress hormones, including cortisol. Evidence shows that chronically high levels of cortisol damage parts of the brain such as the hippocampus, which stores

memory, and the frontal cortex, which is responsible for high-level thinking. The researchers also found that the anxietydementia relationship was stronger among fraternal twins whom had only one

develop dementia than among identical twins. The researchers said this finding indicates that there may be genetic factors shared by anxiety and dementia that account for the anxiety-dementia risk.

The USC team also hopes to determine whether individuals who have been treated for anxiety earlier in their lives show lower risk of dementia compared with those whose anxiety was not treated.

Governor Brown Issues Statement on Global Climate Pact Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. issued the following statement on the global climate pact reached today at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris: "This is a historic turning point in the quest to

combat one of the biggest threats facing humanity," said Governor Brown. "Activists, businesses and subnational leaders now need to redouble their efforts and push for increasingly aggressive action." Governor Brown at-

tended the UN Climate Change Conference at the invitation of UNFCCC Executive Secretary Christiana Figueres – the United Nations' top climate change official – and France's Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development Lau-

rent Fabius – the president of the COP21. Governor Brown spent five days at the conference in Paris, during which time he met with UN SecretaryGeneral Ban Ki-moon, China's Special Envoy on Climate Change Xie Zhenhua, France's Minister of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Energy Ségolène Royal, U.S. Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz, former Vice President Al Gore and a number of world leaders at events in Le Bourget and throughout Paris organized by the French, U.S., German and Chinese governments, UNFCCC, the European Commission, the World Bank, UN Foundation, Climate Group, International New York Times, École Normale Supérieure (ENS) and many others. Over the course of the conference, the Governor welcomed a total of 58 new signatories to the Under 2

MOU climate agreement – bringing the tally to 123 jurisdictions representing more than 720 million people and $19.9 trillion in combined GDP, equivalent to more than a quarter of the global economy. The Under 2 MOU is an agreement to limit the increase in global average temperature to below 2 degrees Celsius, the warming threshold at which scientists say there will likely be catastrophic climate disruptions. Signatories commit to either reducing greenhouse gas emissions 80 to 95 percent below 1990 levels or limit per capita annual emissions to less than 2 metric tons by 2050. During one of the Under 2 MOU signing ceremonies in Paris, California and the German state of BadenWürttemberg – who together have spearheaded the Under 2 MOU – announced that The Climate Group will

take on the role of secretariat for the pact, helping the signatories share expertise and policy solutions and ensuring that governments deliver on their commitments. The Climate Group is an international nonprofit that works with business, state and regional leaders to promote a prosperous, low carbon future. Last year, with the backing of the United Nations, it helped to create the Compact of States and Regions, a complementary initiative to the Under 2 MOU that works with governments to measure and report progress toward their emission reduction goals and ensure accountability. Also during the Paris conference, Governor Brown and U.S. Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz announced that California will host the seventh Clean Energy Ministerial in San Francisco next year.

A custom-made elevator lift was created for “Downton Abbey’s” central tower. This lift allows the tower to drop straight down into the center of the castle so that it can pass under power lines and bridges. The float is 18 feet wide by

Correction In last weeks’ Letters to the Editor, we ran James Whitehall’s letter and attributed it to the Arcadia Weekly. Mr. Whitehall is not a staff member at Arcadia Weekly and was voicing a private opinion.

Reader Says ‘Good Riddance’ to Le Cordon Bleu

It was just a matter of time for such an atrociously run company. Ridiculous business decisions made by short sighted, ignorant leaders are the reason for their failure. This incompetent, American-owned company (that simply paid for their illustrious French name and dropped all serious educational culinary excellence long ago) epitomizes profit before sound service to its overcharged student clients long ago. The remaining story to be told is whether more students and abused staff will bring additional lawsuits. -J.D. Via SierraMadreWeekly.com

Well done on the solid judging again!!! Great to see the same houses with the same yearly displays winning different categories.

I mean really? What’s the point of entering if the same houses run the same displays and still win? #objectivejudging What a joke! -“The Truth” Via MonroviaWeekly. com

Rep. Chu Praises Historic Paris Agreement on Climate Change

On Saturday night, after two weeks of negotiations in Paris, negotiators from 195 countries agreed to an historic agreement to curb emission and fight climate change. Under the Paris Agreement, every country has agreed to promote and pursue voluntary cuts to greenhouse gas emission to keep average global temperatures from rising significantly. Scientists have argued that an increase of 2 degrees Celsius would mean significant risks to people and the environment. Wealthier countries have also

pledged financial support to help developing countries adopt new energy plans. Rep. Judy Chu (CA27) released the following statement: “What we have witnessed in Paris is truly historic. For years, we have been warning that climate change is a global problem, and now we finally have a global solution. I want to congratulate all of our negotiators who worked so hard on this agreement. Curbing emissions is an achievable goal that will spur new innovations and help our economy while protecting our environment. I am committed to doing my part to ensure we meet our goal of cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 26% below 2005 levels by 2025 by supporting the Clean Power Plan, the EPA, investments in new technology, and more. We know the risks of climate change. The stakes could not be higher. This agreement is finally putting the entire world in action to ensure a livable environment for future generations.”

A new California Appellate case just published August 8, 2013, “Glaski v. Bank of America”, holds that a homeowner can challenge his lender’s right to foreclose by showing that the Deed of Trust never made it into the securitized trust until after the trust’s closing date. This issue is now squarely before the California Supreme Court in Yvanova v. New Century Mortgage Corp. This is the case in most loans made in the last 12 years. If the bank foreclosed we should be able to get the homeowner money damages and/or the house back. Or a lawsuit could be filed and a court ruling obtained preventing the court from foreclosing. Recently enacted Sections 2924(a)(6) and 2924.19 of California Civil Code provide the same relief to homeowners. It is highly suggested that homeowners take this window of opportunity to get relief before the banks get Congress to close this door with national legislation. Contact us so we can help you.

A Noise Within (ANW), the acclaimed classical repertory theatre, presents a free, staged reading of Tom Stoppard’s “Arcadia”, directed by Stephen Rockwell, on Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2016, performed as part of “Words Within”, ANW’s ongoing series of free play readings by resident artists. Reading directly follows a lecture on stage at 7 p.m. from California In-

stitute of Technology’s Dr. Julia Greer about the play, and she will then join the artists for a talk back with the audience after the play reading. Readings routinely fill up early, so reservations are suggested. Please RSVP via phone to (626) 356-3100 extension 1 to reserve your seat for this performance. “Arcadia” is a 1993

play by Tom Stoppard concerning the relationship between past and present, order and disorder, certainty and uncertainty. Many critics have praised it as the finest play from one of the most significant contemporary playwrights in the English language. In 2006, the Royal Institution of Great Britain named it one of the bestscience-related works ever written.

“People have been extensively exploring the concepts of entropy and the second law of thermodynamics since they were first introduced. Within all the laws of physics - the law that entropy always increases, which is the main tenet in the 2nd law of thermodynamics - holds a prominent place - much because of its universality and implications to just

about any physical process,” notes Dr. Greer. She continues, “The intriguing mystery is how does the second law of ever-increasing entropy in physics apply to the human world, where emotions and intellect not only perceive things but also interact with the physical world. One could infer that the main scientific aspect of Tom Stoppard’s ‘Arcadia’

is chaos and a lack of order, or entropy! The overall structure of the play, the development of each character, and Thomasina’s discovery of both science and her own self, as she grows up. It’s the intersection of art and science in its purest form, and as long as we keep on asking questions, we will never run out of entropy!”

One of the oldest continuous Southern California automotive traditions will have its 60th renewal early on Sunday morning, Dec. 27 at Irwindale Event Center. That is when the Horseless Carriage Club of America's annual Horseless Carriage Holiday Motor Excursion will form up and embark on a special drive from Irwindale to Pasadena and back. In excess of 200 vintage motorcars, true horseless carriages, many from the very dawn of the age of the automobile and none younger than 73 years of age, will be on display with many of their drivers and passengers festively dressed up in the style(s) of the times. The drive itself is open to pre-1932 vehicles. This remarkable confluence of hundreds of horseless carriages parking, preening, showing, staging, and then heading out on the day's run has been called, "a truly breathtaking example of rolling, running, wonderfully persevered and beloved pre-war vehicles." The spectacle is a most rewarding

around. And, these car owners love to share their incredible classics with interested people. A large number of the cars that travel to Irwindale for this annual event are authentic museum pieces, some are one-of-akind, and many are worth a king's ransom or two. But, of course, that is not the idea here, these priceless cars and their owners will congregate at Irwindale to drive them the way that they were meant to be driven so long ago: proudly, with a wonderful sense of adventure for what lies ahead, just down the road. As much fun as the parking lot gathering at Irwindale is, at the stroke of 10:30 a.m. the call will come from event organizer Kenny King to cue up and begin the actual motor excursion. And, with that, an incredible parade of elegant machines will motor on out of the Event Center parking lot down palm treelined Speedway Drive and embark on their adventure to Pasadena in a fantastic cavalcade of classic machinery that quite simply needs to be seen in person to be believed. The Life and Times of Y.C. Hong Focus of Exhibit at The Huntington By May S. Ruiz

T

he United States is one big melting pot – a land of immigrants who come from far-flung corners of the world. Therefore it is almost inconceivable that there was a time when Americans were openly hostile to certain foreign nationals who wanted to come into this country. And yet, this was the reality that You Chung (Y.C.) Hong, foremost Chinese-American immigration lawyer, encountered during the early years of the 20th century. A practicing immigration lawyer from 1927 to 1977, Y.C. worked relentlessly on behalf of Chinese settlers and, in the span of his career, helped over 7,000 enter the country legally. He was one of the Asian experts invited to take part in President Harry Truman’s commission to study and reform the U.S. Immigration system. Y.C.’s history and life’s work is the subject of a show currently going on the Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens. Li Wei Yang, curator of western American history, says, “We were compelled to mount an exhibition because

it was the first time the Huntington has received a collection about the life of a major Chinese-American figure in Los Angeles. We felt it was important to let the community know, especially in San Marino and the San Gabriel Valley, that we are serious about the preservation of Chinese-American history. We want to show that we care about this community and that we encourage future collections of this kind.” As the exhibition reveals, Y.C. was born in San Francisco in 1898 to Chinese-American parents who originated from southern China. His early childhood was marked by two significant events – his father died at an early age leaving his mom to raise two boys on her own. And he was accidentally dropped by a relative who was taking care of him. The resulting spinal damage limited his full height to reach only four feet and five inches tall. In spite of his early misfortunes, Y.C. had a normal childhood. He graduated from Berkeley High School in 1915 then traveled around the country for a while, and worked as a bookkeeper at a Chinese restaurant in Boston. In 1918, Y.C. came to L.A.

and was employed as Chinese translator for the Bureau of Immigration while attending night school. He passed the California Bar Exams in 1923, a remarkable feat as he was still a year away from receiving his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Southern California (USC). He was one of the first ChineseAmericans to be licensed to practice law; he graduated in 1924 and earned his master’s degree in 1925 at USC. His 74-page master’s thesis analyzed how the extension and administration of the

Chinese Exclusion Act deviated from the original decree, making Chinese-Americans second-class citizens in their own country. In 1927, Y.C. became an immigration lawyer. Y.C. grew up during the period when Chinese laborers were considered persona non grata. The Chinese Exclusion Act, which was in effect from 1882 to 1943, prohibited Chinese laborers from entering the country. Chinese miners who were in California during the Gold Rush were singled out, and had to pay $4 each month for

the right to engage in mining. This tax practically legalized discrimination. Beginning in 1909, all Chinese with legal status in the U.S. were issued Photo Certificates of Identity – a requirement which only applied to the Chinese, until 1928. This residence certificate became their proof of their legal right to be here – if stopped by the police, they had to produce such identification or they could be arrested or deported. It was eventually replaced by the Alien Registration Receipt Card, known informally as the “green card”. As rules became ever more stringent, making it extremely difficult for Chinese immigrants to file the necessary paperwork, much less navigate the complex process, lawyers became requisite. Successful entry into the U.S. depended on their ability to recall precise details of family history during long hours of interrogation. While immigration officers used this deterrent, it didn’t stop the Chinese from coming as they adapted to the technique. Y.C. provided his clients with a list of commonly asked questions (which numbered in the

hundreds), to which they constructed all the answers. They then used this “cheat sheet” to pass the test – they had found a way to outsmart the authorities. A very astute man, Y.C. recognized the value of political connections sympathetic to the Chinese. He befriended politicians and contributed to their campaigns; he worked the system. Executive Order 10392, issued by President Truman on Sept. 4, 1952 established the President’s Commission on Immigration and Naturalization. Y.C. was one of the experts invited to give their opinions. Y.C. practiced immigration law from 1927 until his death on Nov. 8, 1977. For 50 years the Chinese came to him for help and he responded with grace. He advocated for his people to gain acceptance into society and achieve economic stability. Any one of his countrymen who had lived through the exclusion era knew his name. Circumstances beyond Y.C.’s control made him physically small and seemingly insignificant. But his unforgettable life and accomplishments prove him to be extraordinary writ large.

Crown City Automotive By J. Shadé Quintanilla A car can be one of our most prized possessions, especially as Californians who seem to always be stuck on the road. But when things go wrong with it, can you trust just anybody with your car? The obvious answer is no. Many auto and car service shops don’t offer the best quality of service or have the most qualified mechanics. But don’t fret about those bad auto shops because we know of a great, trustworthy shop that will actually fix your car and do it right the first time. Crown City Automotive is a family-owned and operated full automotive service shop with skillful mechanics that are ready and willing to assist customers with their automotive needs. A one-stop shop, customers can get a handful of services in just one visit. The Temple City-based auto repair shop attends to both domestic and foreign cars and offers a variety of repair and auto services, including smog checks, brake inspections, tire and brake replacements and much more. Customers with broken down cars can

also be picked up or dropped off within a five-mile radius if needed. Appointments at the auto shop are not necessary. Customers are welcome to bring in their cars at their convenience Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 8 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Running on firstcome, first-service basis, customers who want faster service should come during the morning to avoid a long wait. Crown City Automotive is also conveniently located near a shopping center with restaurants and K-Mart. Customers can drop off their car and

shop and dine while they wait. What make Crown City Automotive different from other auto shops in the San Gabriel Valley? It’s a repair shop that can be trusted. “I’m very committed to serving this great community as well as the surrounding areas with professional, friendly, and most importantly honest service,” said owner Harry Demirjian. With over 20 years of experience, Demirjian is no stranger to the automotive industry. Since 1990, he has worked at various automotive and repair shops in the area before opening Crown City Automotive. Years ago, he even owned and operated another auto repair shop in Arcadia. Demirjian opened Crown City Automotive last year because he wanted to provide customers a reliable place to bring their cars to. “People are always looking for a decent mechanic, someone who they can trust,” he told Beacon Media News. “’I’m in this business to earn their trust.” Crown City Automotive is located at 5665 Rosemead Blvd., Temple City, CA. For more information, call the shop at (626) 940-5347.

Fire-Breathing Rose Parade Float Ready for Final Decorations - East Meets West story and Photos by Terry Miller

A

_16491

ward-winning Tournament of Roses float designer Charles Meier unveiled Friday the skeleton and inner workings of the Rose Parade’s first ever fire-breathing Chinese dragon float, “Marco Polo: East meets West,” sponsored by the Singpoli Group. Meier and several local officials joined Singpoli Group CEO Kin Hui for the viewing Friday morning. “Singpoli is about bringing cultures together," Hui said. “Our float uses spectacular symbols including an enormous dragon that highlights the similarities between western and Chinese cultures.” The highlight of Singpoli’s latest Rose Parade entry is the mythical dragon, which will breathe real fire throughout the 5.5-milelong parade. Smoke also pours from the flaming purple pearl in the dragon's claw. Fire marshals carefully reviewed and tested the special effects for months. Amazingly, the dragon

(if it were extended in full) would be 175 feet long. The float will be comprised of 85 percent fresh floral products. Additionally it will use more citrus than any other float. This magnificent design draws inspiration from Marco Polo’s travels from Venice, Italy to China. A costumed rider portrays Marco Polo riding on the moon bridge at the front of the float. The Venetian flag, featuring St. Mark’s winged lion, waves overhead. A spectacular fire-breathing dragon symbolizes the beauty and mystery of the east. In Chinese mythology, dragons are benevolent creatures that represent strength and good fortune. The styling of the dragon intentionally blends Chinese elements with the look of European fairy tale dragons. This fusion of cultures embodies the core values of Singpoli -- building bridges between east and west. Stylized clouds inspired by Chinese embroidery float over a lush garden of flowering trees.

Arcadia Councilman Sho Tay was on hand for the unveiling last week.

A long, tall dragon will breathe real fire and smoke will pour out from a purple pearl in the dragon’s claw, as ‘Marco Polo’ heads the front of the float in this design by Paradiso Parade Floats’ Charles Meier. Singpoli Group CEO Kin Hui said,“We continue our efforts to bridge the eastern and western cultures.”

scene of the incident, police say it appears that at least one additional person from the mourners group returned fire. This shooting came at a tragic time for the group at the vigil. A night meant

to spent in remembrance of Calderon, mourners were shaken up by what happened to their friend and the unexpected attack on Sunday night. “This never would have happened before,” a man

near the scene of the vigil shooting told Pasadena Star News. “This wasn’t right.” Calderon of Altadena was fatally shot on Friday night in a drive-by shooting in the 600 block of North Mentor Avenue. Officers

of his relation to the gang. Some family members of Calderon were also unsure if he was in a gang. No suspects in both shootings were arrested, and police are still investigating both matters.

silly zingers like this but for area students who hope to get into the culinary business, this is a big blow in Pasadena. Le Cordon Bleu announced it is closing all 16 of its culinary schools across the country. CEC, Career Education Corporation—the for-profit parent company that owns the Cordon Bleu, said last week it will no longer enroll new students after Jan. 4, 2016, and will begin discontinuing operations. Existing students will be able to finish their programs and all campuses are expected to remain open until September 2017 according to a press release. "New federal regulations make it difficult to project the future for career schools that have higher operating costs, such as culinary schools that require expensive commercial kitchens and ongoing food costs," said Todd Nelson, president and chief executive officer of Career Ed, in a news release. Capture the Spirit December marks a special time. It brings with it Christmas day! The symbols of the season Are spread in bright array. The gifts beneath the Christmas tree, Stockings hung in a row, The spicy smell of Christmas treats, The pine that wafts the air -There is a certain peace within That makes the season rare. It is Christmas on the highway, In the thronging , busy mart. But the dearest truest Christmas Is the Christmas in the heart.

The music, gifts and laughter That seem to flow so free Make one stop and wonder Why can't this always be? So capture the spirit of Christmas Don't let it last just a day. Make every day a Christmas day Filled with love and mirth. Keep a touch of Christmas Tucked within your heart. Keep a touch, but share a touch With those along life's way, That all may come to realize The truth of Christmas Day.

education AUSD Takes on Social Media in a New Way

22 | DECember 24 - december 30, 2015

By Jonathan Tsou Every day, almost 2 billion individuals can quickly pick up electronic devices and can easily communicate with hundreds, if not thousands of people from around the world. In a recent study by Common Sense Media, a nonprofit focused on helping children, parents, and educators navigate the world of media and technology, it said that an average United States

teen spends about nine hours using social media for their enjoyment daily. What if a school district can communicate vital information to students via social media? Arcadia Unified School District's Public Information Officer Ryan Foran is doing just that. Ryan Foran is a former anchor for CBS/FOX from Tucson, Arizona. Foran has a Bachelor’s of Arts in Broadcast Journalism and has been awarded both as

a news reporter and a communications professional. He has also taught a multimedia journalism course at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. In a statement regarding the use of social media in Arcadia Unified School District, Ryan Foran said that "social media is an essential tool for our communication outreach plan," social media provides "latest news and information related to our schools and district."

Foran has formed a Digital Communications internship program that allows students from Arcadia High School who have an interest in advanced communications and journalism to get involved. Members can help Arcadia Unified School District create a stronger presence on social media pages, such as Facebook, Twitter, Weibo, and Instagram. Each student goes through a rigid interview panel and a probationary period before becoming an official intern. The students are held accountable to a high standard that represent the school district. The program is similar to an Advanced Placement Course (AP) as it not only teaches each student communication techniques, but it helps prepare them for college and beyond. Travis Chen, one of the first members, said that the program has provided him "endless opportunities in journalism, photography, cinematography, communications, interview, and so much more." Members of the group, often called, "minions," must have a passion for working collaboratively with others in a team setting and

must be eager to learn. Although the group has weekly meetings where they discuss future projects, review past projects, and attend lectures, it is more of a freelance group. Students must be willing to work independently on their own time. In a recent interview with Chris Robin, members Melaine Mak and Chris Chen both stressed that the program has helped them find a passion in communications and discover the importance for a school district to create a strong relationship with their students and parents. They also have both learned several life lessons and life skills regarding their future

and their future careers. Currently, the internship program has 15 digital journalists who cover news from around the district. Members can learn how to write news stories, produce videos, create promotional materials, and help organize and publicize district events. Applications for next semester will be open until Dec. 28, 2015. The application can be found on the AUSD Communications and Public Information page. When asked about the goal of the program, Ryan Foran said that he wants this program to become "the best high school internship program in the country."

Public Comment on Draft History–Social Science Framework Invited State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson announced that California is taking a step forward in updating its history–social science curriculum by inviting the public to comment on a new draft framework. “This framework will help our teachers integrate our new standards in English language arts and English language development with our existing history–social science standards to better prepare them to be informed citizens and to get them ready for college and 21st century careers,” Torlakson said, “This is an important step in our

efforts toward emphasizing critical thinking, problem solving, and communications skills.” The History–Social Science Framework for California Public Schools, Kindergarten Through Grade Twelve (Framework) will provide guidance for teachers, administrators, and parents on how a curriculum based on content standards is implemented in the classroom in the context of California’s diversity. This draft addresses events since the last framework was adopted in 2001, reflects changes in statute since then, and provides

guidance on how to integrate the new California English Language Arts and Literacy Standards and the California English Language Development Standards in the history–social science classroom. The Framework will provide direction for the development of instructional materials, curriculum, instruction, assessment, and professional learning. The current draft Framework includes major updates to the narrative course descriptions for kindergarten through grade twelve, as well as new chapters on assessment, access and equity, and

Senate Introduces Darwin Day Resolution

The Secular Coalition for America is proud to announce that for the second year in a row, it has partnered with Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) to introduce a Darwin Day resolution (S. Res. 337) in the Senate. The introduction of the Senate resolution comes only weeks after its companion resolution (H. Res. 548) was introduced in the House by Representative Jim Himes (D-CT). Since its introduction,

the House resolution has steadily gained momentum, garnering a total of 15 cosponsors. The introduction of the two resolutions coincides with the release of a study showing that since 2005, 65 anti-evolution bills have been introduced across the country. The Secular Coalition for America is the advocacy organization representing atheists, humanists, agnostics and other nontheists.

supporting high-quality history–social science instruction. The draft framework has been posted on the California Department of Education History–Social Science Curriculum Frameworks Web page. Members of the public may send comments on the draft Framework directly by

email to hssframework@cde. ca.gov. The current comment period will remain open until February 29, 2016. All public comments received during the field review survey will be presented to the Instructional Quality Commission and the State Board of Education for review and possible inclusion

into the final Framework. The Board is scheduled to take final action on the Framework by May 2016. For more information on the development of the draft framework, visit the California Department of Education History–Social Science Curriculum Frameworks Web page.

hile most people this time of year visit Pasadena for the Tournament of Roses, there are other wonderful sights and sounds to see in our area such as a plethora of world class museums, like the former home of Henry Huntington for some of the most valuable manuscripts and works of art you’ll ever see in adjunct to the splendid gardens. Additionally, the Norton Simon Museum and Pacific Asia Museum will transport your mind into another time and place. In tallying these marvelous institutions, the San Gabriel Valley offers worldclass theatre options with the Pasadena Playhouse, Sierra Madre Playhouse and the Pasadena Civic Theatre offering exceptional and stimulating plays. Music is also a big part of our history with The California Philharmonic calling Pasadena home. Another exciting part of San Gabriel Valley is the thoroughbred racing at Santa Anita race track. Bringing veterans homes.

Retired Army Staff Sergeant Dominic Perrotte III and family (c) receives their mortgage-free home during the 2015 closing ceremony.

We’re committed to supporting our veterans and active duty military. At the closing ceremonies of the 2015 Rose Parade®, retired Army Staff Sergeant Dominic Perrotte III received a mortgage-free home. It was one of more than 300 homes that Wells Fargo has given to deserving veterans since 2013 as part of our Military Affairs program. The program reinforces our ongoing commitment to help active duty military, veterans, and their families reach financial success every day by providing financial education, employment services, and homeownership assistance.

New Directions Veterans Choir Showcased by Wells Fargo in 2016 Rose Parade

W

ells Fargo will be sponsoring the 127th Rose Parade’s closing show, “This is My Country”, featuring the New Directions Veterans Choir, an awardwinning acappella group comprised of veterans who have served proudly in the United States Military but whose sever struggles following their service left them homeless. The goal is to raise awareness for nonprofit organizations helping homeless and wounded veterans. Wells Fargo has been

a proud sponsor of Tournament of Roses® activities and events for ten consecutive years, and as part of the sponsorships has featured a nonprofit organization riding in the stagecoach equestrian units in the Rose Parade. New Directions for Veterans (NDVets) gave these brave men and women hope and a new lease on life, and now these talented singers are an inspiration to others. The Wells Fargo Foundation has supported NDVets in Los Angeles for the past five years, and during that time has do-

nated nearly $300,000 to their programs for homeless veterans Since 1992, New Directions for Veterans (www. ndvets.org) has been providing transitional and permanent supportive housing, as well as mental health services, substance abuse treatment, job training and placement, legal assistance, and financial literacy education, to at-risk and homeless veterans. Each year, the agency serves more than 1,100 veterans and their families throughout Los Angeles County.

About the Wells Fargo 2016 Stagecoach Equestrian Unit

In the 2016 Rose Parade the iconic Wells Fargo stagecoaches are hosting participants of Warriors to Summits, a program of No Barriers USA, a nonprofit whose mission is to provide transformative

expeditions for veterans with disabilities and help them reach new personal heights. The program uses mountains as a metaphor to help wounded veterans overcome physical, mental, and emotional bar-

riers. The summit team devoted months to preparing and learning the skills that helped them make the climb and spent time volunteering with Wells Fargo team members as leaders who serve.

The stagecoaches and horses are presented by the staff from Wells Far-

go’s Stagecoach Appearance Program. The drivers, George, Charlene and Justin

Lane are from Lancaster, Calif. and have been with Wells Fargo since 1990.

No Barriers Warriors is a program of No Barriers USA whose mission is to unleash the potential of the human spirit. The program empowers veterans and transitioning service members with disabilities, and survivors of the fallen, to overcome barriers and unleash their potential. Their experiences serve as both an opportunity for growth and catalyst for change as these brave men and women stretch boundaries, build teams, innovate through adversity and step up to lead and serve others. Com-

plementing the reintegration process, this program provides quality transformative experiences

About Wells Fargo Philanthropy Wells Fargo is among the top corporate philanthropists in the United States, recently giving more than $281 million to 17,100 nonprofits, schools, and community organizations across the country—with more than $23 million of that invested here in Los Angeles and surrounding areas. NDVets and No Barriers are just two of the many nonprofits and programs for veterans and active duty military Wells Fargo supports across the nation. Wells Fargo has donated 300 Real Estate Owned (REO) properties valued at more than $49 million and an additional $17 million in Wells Fargo Foundation donations for a total of $66 million since 2012. Wells Fargo has hired more than 4,800 veterans and participated in over 650 military job fairs during this time. This donation is not just Wells Fargo Foundation funds, but some of it comes directly from team members, who give to the charitable organization of their choice during the annual Wells Fargo community support campaign. In the 2014 Southern California and Greater Los Angeles community support campaign Wells Fargo employees donated an additional $10.2 million. Volunteerism

is also an important part of Wells Fargo’s corporate culture; each employee is given two paid days to volunteer their time to the nonprofit, school, or community organization of their choice. Many Wells Fargo employees volunteer by facilitating non-commercial, free of charge, multilingual, age-appropriate, financial literacy trainings using the Hands on Banking curriculum. Last year alone, the Los Angeles team volunteered more than 33,000 hours of their time to help care for local communities. Company-wide, team members volunteered more than 1.7 million hours in 2014.

About Wells Fargo Limited Edition Plush Pony

Wells Fargo has issued a special limitededition plush pony that is co-branded with the Tournament of Roses logo and only available in Southern California in time for the New Year. The plush pony also has a story of saving a

soldier, and is named after and created in the likeness of, a real horse in Bakersfield California. The horse, named Nellie, and her Wells Fargo driver, Rush Blodget, ordinarily picked up packages to deliver to customers, but in 1897,

following the Spanish American War, they picked up a sick soldier returning from service that turned out to be Blodget’s brother. Thanks to Nellie, Sgt. Claude Blodget survived and eventually made a full recovery.
