Charles Meier, Paradiso Float Designer, Is to the Manor Born: ‘Downton Abbey,’ That Is
BY TERRY MILLER According to a press release, acclaimed drama “Downton Abbey” on Masterpiece on PBS will get a special treat on New Year’s Day when a new float celebrating the show debuts in the 127th Rose Parade® on Jan. 1, 2016. The Crawley family estate has been painstakingly recreated for the float, complete with a magnificent landscape depicting English rose gardens and rolling green lawns and a 1919 Bentley driven by the family chauffeur. The float, themed “The Final Adventure” (a nod and a wink to the Rose Parade’s theme of “Find Your Adventure”), celebrates the final season “Downton Abbey” on PBS beginning Jan. 3, 2016, at 9 p.m. eastern time. The float will feature more than 60,000 roses in 20 different varieties, including velvety Roseberry and Cherry O; fragile pink Titanic and Priceless; and English garden roses, rarely seen on Rose Parade floats. Oriental lilies, snapdragons, hypericum, and a variety of orchids will provide accents throughout the garden. SEE PAGE 4

Voorhis School Warms the Holidays for Those in Need Through Schoolwide Blanket Drive
_16491
Voorhis Elementary School students, staff, and families demonstrated the true spirit of the season by giving back to the community. For the past two months the Voorhis team was busy raising money through the recycling of plastic bottles and soda cans to raise money to buy blankets for people in need. Under the direction of third-grade teacher Juan Orellana, this is Voorhis’ second year doing the blanket drive. “This was a school-wide effort. Our parent volunteers and Partnership Action Team (PAT) were amazing and key to making the blanket drive a success,” said Orellana. “Last year we raised $300 and this year we raised $433, enabling us to buy 82 blankets. It’s very gratifying to give to those in need and I’m so proud of the students and everyone at Voorhis for pitching in.” The students were happy to not only help those in need with the blankets, but to also help the environment by recycling. “Recycling is a great way to raise money for worthy causes. The students learned that waste material that could
as they passed blanket after blanket down the line the students’ joy was infectious. “It makes me happy to give the blankets to people who need them,” said first
grader Natyeli Lujano Perez. “It’s been so cold and I think the blankets will help them a lot.” As a reward for meeting and exceeding the goal
of raising $300 the students are looking forward to seeing their teachers wear red Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer noses on the last day of school before winter break.
eo. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department- Temple Station completed an investigation regarding the theft. Los Angeles Area Media publicized the loss and LASD Crime bulletins were later released to the public. On Friday, Dec. 18, 2015, the El Monte Police
Department served a narcotics and weapons related search warrant at 11134 Oak St., El Monte. Upon entry, police personnel located ZAZU (stolen bird) inside of the residence. Other contraband was also located. One suspect, identified as Roy Pinedo, was arrested
for possession of the stolen bird and other felony charges. ZAZU was uninjured, in good health and reunited the same day with a Reptacular Animals Company representative. Roy Pinedo was arraigned on Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2015 at the El Monte Superior Courthouse.

have easily ended up in a landfill or the ocean polluting our environment can actually help us help others,” said Orellana. The $433 was used to purchase 82 warm and cozy blankets which were given to Lillian Rey from Volunteers of America, to distribute to those in need. Rey was delighted to visit Voorhis to pick up the generous donation. “This is such a blessing! These blankets will help so much and bring comfort to many people. People who are homeless also include children and families who live in their cars or in motel rooms and they will love having a warm blanket. You are making a difference to someone’s
life and you are having the best Christmas ever because you are giving,” said Rey. “Thank you so much for your generosity and kindness.” Each blanket was wrapped in hand-made wrapping paper and decorated with a special touch. Orellana’s third graders, joined by students from Nick Mckinin’s class and other students, formed a human chain and passed the blankets from the cafeteria, down the line of students to Rey and her drivers who loaded them in their cars. “It feels really good to help others,” said Owen Alatorre, third grader. “I hope the new blankets help keep them warm.” Singing Christmas carols

Random Memories of the Sierra Madre Rose Float Association By John Govorchin Taking the Rose Float to the Parade formation area on New Year's Eve is an experience of its own. Starting out at midnight on December 31, leaving the Park with a convoy. Out in front of the Float is a police car on the right and Richard Probart, Sierra Madre Fire Marshal, on the left. In the center is John Clarke with his tow truck, towing the Float. Following in behind the Float are two pick-up trucks, one right and one left. In the center behind the Float are or one more motor vehicles. All of this is designed to protect the Float as we travel. The pick-up trucks are carrying, in addition to workers, an assortment of tools, materials, and flowers should that be necessary to repair any damages en-route. The route takes us down Sierra Madre Boulevard to Del Mar and west to Fair Oaks, and south on Fair Oaks to California or Columbia depending on how far back from the start, the Sierra Madre Float's position is in the Parade.
While there is cheering by residents as we pass in the City, the fun begins at approximately where Pasadena High School is. The Parade watchers gather along the way until you reach Colorado Blvd. They have been partying for many hours and they have plastic bugles and other noise makers which they sound off as we pass. They also try to steal flowers off of the Float which is very dangerous because we keep moving, but that doesn't stop them from trying. We also had one occasion where a Volkswagen Beetle passed by us on the right sidewalk just as we passed Colorado Blvd. It served them right when the police were waiting after they passed us by. On Del Mar we occupied three lanes, one which was eastbound. On one occasion, Richard Probart came nose to nose with an eastbound car. He had his red lights flashing and he was blowing his horn. This had no effect until Richard turned on his siren, then the auto moved over. On another occasion we were getting ready to turn onto California when a car
was stopped in the center lane. I was shouting to move it and flashing a large flashlight onto his face. Finally, after about ten times of shouting, he finally moved his car. One of the tools that we carried was several bamboo poles about twenty feet long with a fork tip on the top. This was used to lift wires or tree branches for clearance of the Float. We were the only entry in the Parade with these tools and we spent much time helping the other floats clear wires or tree branches. When we arrived at our Parade position, we checked the float and made any necessary repairs, after which we ate or slept until Parade time. If it rained during the night, we simply moved under the Float and kept dry. The lawn in front of Tournament House was something to behold. If you walked up to go into Tournament House, the smell of alcohol and marijuana from the people lying on the lawn was enough to intoxicate you. No matter how hard it was, we were all happy to be doing the job!

plorers from the station assisted deputies and the posse in asking residents to help out. Deputy Harrington said many were extremely generous this year, buying more expensive electronic devices, which perhaps indicates a slightly stronger economy. “Having the posse this year really helped garner interest … who doesn’t love a horse?” Harrington said. Deputy Harrington, who had coordinated this event
for years, distributed the gifts on Dec. 21 in areas covered by Temple Station. We caught up with the deputies on Peck Road where scores of toys were given away to some very grateful families. One little recipient, named Andrea, 3, received a baby carriage for her baby doll, aptly named Baby. Even though this drive was very successful, Deputy Harrington said there is always a need for more. Noting that many children are

Capture the Spirit December marks a special time. It brings with it Christmas day! The symbols of the season Are spread in bright array. The gifts beneath the Christmas tree, Stockings hung in a row, The spicy smell of Christmas treats, The pine that wafts the air -There is a certain peace within That makes the season rare. It is Christmas on the highway, In the thronging , busy mart. But the dearest truest Christmas Is the Christmas in the heart.
The music, gifts and laughter That seem to flow so free Make one stop and wonder Why can't this always be? So capture the spirit of Christmas Don't let it last just a day. Make every day a Christmas day Filled with love and mirth. Keep a touch of Christmas Tucked within your heart. Keep a touch, but share a touch With those along life's way, That all may come to realize The truth of Christmas Day.

education AUSD Takes on Social Media in a New Way
22 | DECember 24 - december 30, 2015
By Jonathan Tsou Every day, almost 2 billion individuals can quickly pick up electronic devices and can easily communicate with hundreds, if not thousands of people from around the world. In a recent study by Common Sense Media, a nonprofit focused on helping children, parents, and educators navigate the world of media and technology, it said that an average United States
teen spends about nine hours using social media for their enjoyment daily. What if a school district can communicate vital information to students via social media? Arcadia Unified School District's Public Information Officer Ryan Foran is doing just that. Ryan Foran is a former anchor for CBS/FOX from Tucson, Arizona. Foran has a Bachelor’s of Arts in Broadcast Journalism and has been awarded both as
a news reporter and a communications professional. He has also taught a multimedia journalism course at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. In a statement regarding the use of social media in Arcadia Unified School District, Ryan Foran said that "social media is an essential tool for our communication outreach plan," social media provides "latest news and information related to our schools and district."

Foran has formed a Digital Communications internship program that allows students from Arcadia High School who have an interest in advanced communications and journalism to get involved. Members can help Arcadia Unified School District create a stronger presence on social media pages, such as Facebook, Twitter, Weibo, and Instagram. Each student goes through a rigid interview panel and a probationary period before becoming an official intern. The students are held accountable to a high standard that represent the school district. The program is similar to an Advanced Placement Course (AP) as it not only teaches each student communication techniques, but it helps prepare them for college and beyond. Travis Chen, one of the first members, said that the program has provided him "endless opportunities in journalism, photography, cinematography, communications, interview, and so much more." Members of the group, often called, "minions," must have a passion for working collaboratively with others in a team setting and

must be eager to learn. Although the group has weekly meetings where they discuss future projects, review past projects, and attend lectures, it is more of a freelance group. Students must be willing to work independently on their own time. In a recent interview with Chris Robin, members Melaine Mak and Chris Chen both stressed that the program has helped them find a passion in communications and discover the importance for a school district to create a strong relationship with their students and parents. They also have both learned several life lessons and life skills regarding their future
and their future careers. Currently, the internship program has 15 digital journalists who cover news from around the district. Members can learn how to write news stories, produce videos, create promotional materials, and help organize and publicize district events. Applications for next semester will be open until Dec. 28, 2015. The application can be found on the AUSD Communications and Public Information page. When asked about the goal of the program, Ryan Foran said that he wants this program to become "the best high school internship program in the country."

Public Comment on Draft History–Social Science Framework Invited State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson announced that California is taking a step forward in updating its history–social science curriculum by inviting the public to comment on a new draft framework. “This framework will help our teachers integrate our new standards in English language arts and English language development with our existing history–social science standards to better prepare them to be informed citizens and to get them ready for college and 21st century careers,” Torlakson said, “This is an important step in our
efforts toward emphasizing critical thinking, problem solving, and communications skills.” The History–Social Science Framework for California Public Schools, Kindergarten Through Grade Twelve (Framework) will provide guidance for teachers, administrators, and parents on how a curriculum based on content standards is implemented in the classroom in the context of California’s diversity. This draft addresses events since the last framework was adopted in 2001, reflects changes in statute since then, and provides
guidance on how to integrate the new California English Language Arts and Literacy Standards and the California English Language Development Standards in the history–social science classroom. The Framework will provide direction for the development of instructional materials, curriculum, instruction, assessment, and professional learning. The current draft Framework includes major updates to the narrative course descriptions for kindergarten through grade twelve, as well as new chapters on assessment, access and equity, and
Senate Introduces Darwin Day Resolution
The Secular Coalition for America is proud to announce that for the second year in a row, it has partnered with Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) to introduce a Darwin Day resolution (S. Res. 337) in the Senate. The introduction of the Senate resolution comes only weeks after its companion resolution (H. Res. 548) was introduced in the House by Representative Jim Himes (D-CT). Since its introduction,

the House resolution has steadily gained momentum, garnering a total of 15 cosponsors. The introduction of the two resolutions coincides with the release of a study showing that since 2005, 65 anti-evolution bills have been introduced across the country. The Secular Coalition for America is the advocacy organization representing atheists, humanists, agnostics and other nontheists.
supporting high-quality history–social science instruction. The draft framework has been posted on the California Department of Education History–Social Science Curriculum Frameworks Web page. Members of the public may send comments on the draft Framework directly by
email to hssframework@cde. ca.gov. The current comment period will remain open until February 29, 2016. All public comments received during the field review survey will be presented to the Instructional Quality Commission and the State Board of Education for review and possible inclusion
into the final Framework. The Board is scheduled to take final action on the Framework by May 2016. For more information on the development of the draft framework, visit the California Department of Education History–Social Science Curriculum Frameworks Web page.

hile most people this time of year visit Pasadena for the Tournament of Roses, there are other wonderful sights and sounds to see in our area such as a plethora of world class museums, like the former home of Henry Huntington for some of the most valuable manuscripts and works of art you’ll ever see in adjunct to the splendid gardens. Additionally, the Norton Simon Museum and Pacific Asia Museum will transport your mind into another time and place. In tallying these marvelous institutions, the San Gabriel Valley offers worldclass theatre options with the Pasadena Playhouse, Sierra Madre Playhouse and the Pasadena Civic Theatre offering exceptional and stimulating plays. Music is also a big part of our history with The California Philharmonic calling Pasadena home. Another exciting part of San Gabriel Valley is the thoroughbred racing at Santa Anita race track. Of course, there are also world famous restaurants and shopping centers to appeal to your every whim. Whatever your pleasure, you will indeed be able to stop and smell the roses in San Gabriel Valley.

We’re committed to supporting our veterans and active duty military. At the closing ceremonies of the 2015 Rose Parade®, retired Army Staff Sergeant Dominic Perrotte III received a mortgage-free home. It was one of more than 300 homes that Wells Fargo has given to deserving veterans since 2013 as part of our Military Affairs program. The program reinforces our ongoing commitment to help active duty military, veterans, and their families reach financial success every day by providing financial education, employment services, and homeownership assistance.

New Directions Veterans Choir Showcased by Wells Fargo in 2016 Rose Parade
W
ells Fargo will be sponsoring the 127th Rose Parade’s closing show, “This is My Country”, featuring the New Directions Veterans Choir, an awardwinning acappella group comprised of veterans who have served proudly in the United States Military but whose sever struggles following their service left them homeless. The goal is to raise awareness for nonprofit organizations helping homeless and wounded veterans. Wells Fargo has been
a proud sponsor of Tournament of Roses® activities and events for ten consecutive years, and as part of the sponsorships has featured a nonprofit organization riding in the stagecoach equestrian units in the Rose Parade. New Directions for Veterans (NDVets) gave these brave men and women hope and a new lease on life, and now these talented singers are an inspiration to others. The Wells Fargo Foundation has supported NDVets in Los Angeles for the past five years, and during that time has do-
nated nearly $300,000 to their programs for homeless veterans Since 1992, New Directions for Veterans (www. ndvets.org) has been providing transitional and permanent supportive housing, as well as mental health services, substance abuse treatment, job training and placement, legal assistance, and financial literacy education, to at-risk and homeless veterans. Each year, the agency serves more than 1,100 veterans and their families throughout Los Angeles County.
About the Wells Fargo 2016 Stagecoach Equestrian Unit
In the 2016 Rose Parade the iconic Wells Fargo stagecoaches are hosting participants of Warriors to Summits, a program of No Barriers USA, a nonprofit whose mission is to provide transformative
expeditions for veterans with disabilities and help them reach new personal heights. The program uses mountains as a metaphor to help wounded veterans overcome physical, mental, and emotional bar-
riers. The summit team devoted months to preparing and learning the skills that helped them make the climb and spent time volunteering with Wells Fargo team members as leaders who serve.
The stagecoaches and horses are presented by the staff from Wells Far-
go’s Stagecoach Appearance Program. The drivers, George, Charlene and Justin
Lane are from Lancaster, Calif. and have been with Wells Fargo since 1990.
No Barriers Warriors is a program of No Barriers USA whose mission is to unleash the potential of the human spirit. The program empowers veterans and transitioning service members with disabilities, and survivors of the fallen, to overcome barriers and unleash their potential. Their experiences serve as both an opportunity for growth and catalyst for change as these brave men and women stretch boundaries, build teams, innovate through adversity and step up to lead and serve others. Com-
plementing the reintegration process, this program provides quality transformative experiences

About Wells Fargo Philanthropy Wells Fargo is among the top corporate philanthropists in the United States, recently giving more than $281 million to 17,100 nonprofits, schools, and community organizations across the country—with more than $23 million of that invested here in Los Angeles and surrounding areas. NDVets and No Barriers are just two of the many nonprofits and programs for veterans and active duty military Wells Fargo supports across the nation. Wells Fargo has donated 300 Real Estate Owned (REO) properties valued at more than $49 million and an additional $17 million in Wells Fargo Foundation donations for a total of $66 million since 2012. Wells Fargo has hired more than 4,800 veterans and participated in over 650 military job fairs during this time. This donation is not just Wells Fargo Foundation funds, but some of it comes directly from team members, who give to the charitable organization of their choice during the annual Wells Fargo community support campaign. In the 2014 Southern California and Greater Los Angeles community support campaign Wells Fargo employees donated an additional $10.2 million. Volunteerism
is also an important part of Wells Fargo’s corporate culture; each employee is given two paid days to volunteer their time to the nonprofit, school, or community organization of their choice. Many Wells Fargo employees volunteer by facilitating non-commercial, free of charge, multilingual, age-appropriate, financial literacy trainings using the Hands on Banking curriculum. Last year alone, the Los Angeles team volunteered more than 33,000 hours of their time to help care for local communities. Company-wide, team members volunteered more than 1.7 million hours in 2014.
About Wells Fargo Limited Edition Plush Pony
Wells Fargo has issued a special limitededition plush pony that is co-branded with the Tournament of Roses logo and only available in Southern California in time for the New Year. The plush pony also has a story of saving a
soldier, and is named after and created in the likeness of, a real horse in Bakersfield California. The horse, named Nellie, and her Wells Fargo driver, Rush Blodget, ordinarily picked up packages to deliver to customers, but in 1897,
following the Spanish American War, they picked up a sick soldier returning from service that turned out to be Blodget’s brother. Thanks to Nellie, Sgt. Claude Blodget survived and eventually made a full recovery.
