BY TERRY MILLER With two more search warrants executed in San Bernardino and Redlands, investigators are discovering some new links to the massacre carried out by a young couple last week in San Ber-

nardino. The FBI says Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik were motivated by political ideologies. Over the Past weekend, new details came to light indicating that Farook and Malik, who were husband

and wife, supported the ideology of ISIS. They “were radicalized and have been for quite some time,” said David Bowdich, assistant director of the FBI’s Los Angeles field office. The FBI also said they did some target practicing a few days before the attack.

Some news outlets in New York have said Tuesday that 66-year-old father of Syed Rizwan Farook has been placed on the FBI’s terrorist watch list as investigators expand their probe to include the killers’ family members and friends. We contacted

Antonovich Makes “Offensive and Insensitive” Comments – Angers Muslim Community Freelance Reporter Tweeted the Right Wing Supervisor’s Obtuse Comment By Terry Miller Some obtuse comments by lame duck Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich about last Wednesday’s mass shooting in San Bernardino have

prompted indignation from Muslim community leaders in Southern California. In a speech to supporters after the shooting last Wednesday, Antonovich

apparently said, “The first thing I asked about this incident, was the guy named Mohammad?” The 5th District Supervisor confirmed he made the remark.

A story posted on Los Angeles Times said Antonovich was speaking at the West Ranch Town Council meeting that night and talked about the brutal mas-

sacre that killed 14 people in San Bernardino earlier that day. Brandon Lowrey, a reporter who was at the meeting as a freelancer for the local Santa Clarita Valley Reader, tweeted the “Mohammad” comment.

According to the Los Angeles Times, [the comment] upset many who said it unfairly singled out Muslims over other perpetrators of mass shootings. “That is an insensitive statement coming from somebody in power like the supervisor,” said Kamal al-Khatib, president and cofounder of American Islamic Institute of Antelope Valley, in Palmdale. Al-Khatib said Muslims are fearful of backlash stemming from the attack. “We are a victim too. Every time something happens, we are

munity members since Wednesday’s shooting rampage. He said some Islamic schools closed last Thursday and mosques took extra security precautions. “During these challenging times, our country needs real leaders, not self-serving, immoral politicians who exploit people’s anxiety and fear to fuel the phobia and paranoia,” he said. “I’m sure he didn’t ask on the weekend when there was a shooting in Colorado Springs if the shooter’s name was Michael, because I know I didn’t ask that.”

The suspect then charged the officers, at which point one officer shot the suspect. After he was shot, the suspect continued to yell that he was armed. It turned out the suspect was ‘armed’ with a water bottle. “It appeared to them that the suspect was under the influence of something,” according to LASD.

Volunteers Needed for Duarte 2016 Homeless Count

A new California Appellate case just published August 8, 2013, “Glaski v. Bank of America”, holds that a homeowner can challenge his lender’s right to foreclose by showing that the Deed of Trust never made it into the securitized trust until after the trust’s closing date. This issue is now squarely before the California Supreme Court in Yvanova v. New Century Mortgage Corp. This is the case in most loans made in the last 12 years. If the bank foreclosed we should be able to get the homeowner money damages and/or the house back. Or a lawsuit could be filed and a court ruling obtained preventing the court from foreclosing. Recently enacted Sections 2924(a)(6) and 2924.19 of California Civil Code provide the same relief to homeowners. It is highly suggested that homeowners take this window of opportunity to get relief before the banks get Congress to close this door with national legislation. Contact us so we can help you.

The homeless population, although often silent and in the shadows, are part of the demographic makeup of Southern California. To accurately count this oftenvulnerable group, the City of Duarte opted to participate in the 2016 Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count sponsored by the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA). The actual count is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2016 from 8 p.m. until approximately 12 a.m. The City also participated in the 2015 Homeless Count. Interested individuals, 18 years and older, are in-

vited to volunteer and assist. The City will need approximately 25 to 30 volunteers to successfully complete this task. Volunteer counters will receive training and refreshments that evening and be deployed from the Duarte Community Center in groups to count blocks within a specified area. The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department will be assisting the City in this endeavor. Interested individuals are encouraged to sign up by calling Duarte City Hall at (626) 357-7931 ext. 267 or by emailing jruiz@accessduarte.com.

LAHSA, the lead agency for the Los Angeles Continuum of Care (LACoC), coordinates a biennial count of homeless people. The organization strives to make a difference in the lives of homeless residents and the count allows them to assess how and where homeless people can be best served. LAHSA has contracted with the San Gabriel Valley Consortium on Homelessness, a nonprofit agency, to provide participating cities with support. For additional information please contact Duarte City Hall at (626) 357-7931, ext. 267.

Sierra Madre City Council directed staff last month to begin operating on the City’s wells; a move that would return Sierra Madre to its historic

water source. Due to low water levels in the aquifer, the water being pumped from the ground will be augmented with imported water placed into the City’s spreading basins for groundwater recharge. The reactivation of the City’s wells is intended to alleviate the water discoloration issues that have plagued much of Sierra Madre for the last two years. The reduction in water discoloration will not be immediate. Some neighborhoods may see a spike in discoloration before the water distribution system stabilizes and water clears. The reactivation of the City’s wells was scheduled

yesterday. Customers may notice a chlorine odor to the water and some may notice a taste difference during the transition from chloramine to chlorine disinfected water. The water will be safe to drink and cook with, however it may be necessary for some customers to run their faucets a few moments to allow the water to clear before using it. This action by the City has been done with the approval of the California Department of Public Health – Division of Drinking Water, the Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board, and the Raymond Basin Management Board.

FBI Gets New Informaion About the Fourteen Lives Taken During San Bernardino Terrorist Attack Continued from page 1

to investigate and counteract terrorism, and protect transportation security.” The FBI has taken a lead role in the investigations in the mass shooting that killed 14 people in San Bernardino last Wednesday. “I’d like for all of us to remember that the families and loved ones of the victims, as well as the community of San Bernardino, will be dealing with the aftermath of this long after our investigation is over. “Given the facts as we know them today, the Joint Terrorism Task Force is now investigating the Dec. 2, 2015, shooting in San Bernardino as an act of terrorism. We have taken a leadership role at the federal level and with the resources of the Joint Terrorism Task Force. “The FBI; the San Bernardino Police Department; the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department; the ATF, and many other partners, will continue to work collaboratively as we gather facts. “I want to assure the public that your law enforcement officials will continue to coordinate as partners to ensure we leave no stone unturned in our investigation of these horrific facts. –“ David

Bowdich with the FBI. Farook and his wife opened fire at a holiday luncheon for his co-workers at the Inland Regional Center last Wednesday. The couple did practice shooting together at gun ranges in the Los Angeles area, according to Bowdich. In fact, they had target practice at least once within days of the massacre that left 14 dead, the FBI official said. In an appeal that will likely anger conservatives, Obama demanded greater gun control in his special address Sunday night, saying it was a key part of combating ISIS. He said it is currently too easy for people who want to harm Americans to buy guns. “Congress should act to make sure no one on a nofly list is able to buy a gun. What could possibly be the argument for allowing a terrorist suspect to buy a semiautomatic weapon? This is a matter of national security,” Obama said, and also argued it should be harder to buy powerful assault weapons like those used in the San Bernardino attacks. “What we can do, and must do, is make it harder for them to kill,” Obama said. “For seven years, I’ve

confronted this evolving threat each morning in my intelligence briefing. And since the day I took this office, I’ve authorized U.S. forces to take out terrorists abroad precisely because I know how real the danger is. As Commander-in-Chief, I have no greater responsibility than the security of the American people. As a father to two young daughters who are the most precious part of my life, I know that we see ourselves with friends and coworkers at a holiday party like the one in San Bernardino. I know we see our kids in the faces of the young people killed in Paris. And I know that after so much war, many Americans are asking whether we are confronted by a cancer that has no immediate cure.” “This is now a federal terrorism investigation, led by the FBI,” said Director James Comey, speaking to reporters at FBI Headquarters in Washington, D.C. last Friday. Comey cautioned that it is early in the investigation, “but so far, there is no indication that these killers are part of an organized larger group.” He added that hundreds of FBI personnel are following leads all over the world. “We are trying to understand the

motives of these killers and trying to understand every detail of their lives.” The FBI is in possession of a large volume of electronic evidence that belonged to the husband and wife shooters, Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik. Comey said the couple tried to conceal and destroy electronic evidence before they were killed in a shootout with police Wednesday. Comey assured the public that the FBI is working as fast as it can to find answers.

“We aspire to do it quickly,” he said, “but we most of all aspire to do it well and do it carefully.” Comey also urged the public to be vigilant but not to live in fear. “Do not let fear become disabling,” he said, adding that it’s important “if you see something that doesn’t make sense, you say something to somebody.” Doing this, Comey explained, will “let us do the work that you pay us to do, which is to investigate and fight terrorism while you live the lives

that are so wonderful in this great country of ours.” “Our hearts continue to ache for the people lost and wounded in San Bernardino and their families,” Comey remarked, echoing Lynch’s earlier sentiments to keep the victims and their families “in our prayers.” The FBI has established a national toll free number and asks that anyone with information contact them at: 1-800-CALL-FBI (Option 4) or Numeric Only: 1-800-2255324 (Option 4).

Who Pays for Private School After a Divorce? By Don Schweitzer

Understandably, the biggest worry on any parent’s mind when filing for divorce is the wellbeing of their children. With many unknowns up in the air, parents want to know that their children will be able to maintain the same quality of life they enjoyed while the parents were a married couple. In the state of California, there is a child support calculation that comes into play to help the court determine the amount of child support. It is a calculation much too complex to try to compute by hand and is often determined by a computer program used by the court, which factors in variables such as the number of children, time share of the children, filing status, gross wages, mandatory “add-ons” such as health insurance, childcare cost and special needs obligations; and discretionary “add-ons” including costs for education, special needs programs or travel expenses (traveling to/from an out of state parent). Once the figure is calculated your family law attorney has an opportunity to negotiate additional fees before the child custody amount is locked in. With the San Gabriel Valley being the home to many sought-after private schools, it is no surprise that one of the most common questions I am asked is “Can I request additional financial support to pay for my child’s private school tuition?” As it relates to children without special needs, the answer

depends heavily on the agreement of both parties. If both parties agree to pay for private school and the judge signs it, the amount that includes fees for private tuition is enforceable. In instances where one party disagrees about continuing with private school education, the court will determine the outcome for this “add-on” on a caseby-cases basis. For example, if the child is in his or her junior year of a private high school with one year to go, a judge will most likely order the inclusion of private school tuition fees in the child custody agreement. However, let us say the child has entered the first grade at a private school and one parent is seeking additional support to continue at the school. In most cases this request will be denied as the request of the child continuing in private school is viewed as a personal preference versus a necessity to the child’s overall well-being. Similar rules apply for college tuition. In California, child custody support will continue up until the child reaches the age of 18 or 19 and if the child is still in high school. The court cannot order child support beyond this statutory period. However, if both parents agree to child support up to the age of 25 for college tuition, for example, then it will be enforced in court. The bottom line is, while the court may not order additional child support such as private school, college tuition,

and extracurricular activities, if both parties agree upon these additional expenses, then a separate agreement can be made. In these instances I would advise parties wanting to enter such an agreement, especially nonmodifiable agreements, to do so with caution and careful consideration. It is also imperative that the agreement is written and reviewed by both parties’ legal team because, once it is signed, the parties will be bound by the court’s orders. My Christmas Card Book I just finished addressing my last Christmas card for 2015. I would like to share with you a poem I have had pasted inside the cover of my Christmas card book for many years. I do not claim authorship nor do I remember where I first got it. “I have a list of folks I know, all written in a book, And every year when Christmas comes, I go and take a look. And that is when I realize that these names are a part, Not of the book they are written in, but of my very heart. For each name stands for someone who has crossed my path sometime,

And in that meeting they’re the rhythm in each rhyme; And while it sounds fantastic for me to make this claim, I really feel that I’m composed of each remembered name. And while you may not be aware of any special link, Just meeting YOU has changed my life a lot more than you think. For once I’ve met somebody, the years cannot erase The memory of a pleasant word or a friendly face. So never think my Christmas cards are just a mere routine Of names upon a Christ-

mas list forgotten in between. For when I send a Christmas card that is addressed to you It’s because you’re on the list of folks whom I’m indebted to. For I am but the total of the many folks I’ve met, And you happen to be one of those I prefer not to forget. And whether I have known you for many years or a few, In some way you have had a part in shaping things I do. And every year when Christmas comes, I realize anew, The best gift life can offer is meeting folks like you!”

Hats off to the City of Monrovia, Public Works, and the volunteers of the Old Town Decorating Committee! It is a huge commitment every year to get the town decorated by the day after Thanksgiving, so you all deserve a special thank you. The addition of the lighting in the parkways was a real plus, and the library is truly a showcase with the lighted tree on top and the snowflakes displayed on the building. Each holiday season shares much of the tradition of past years, yet every year is unique. This December there are only three weekends prior to the Christmas holiday and, therefore, a shorter time to celebrate with Santa Breakfasts and our traditional downtown events. This coming Saturday, Dec. 12, Santa will magically appear at the Peach Café at 8 a.m., at Jake’s Roadhouse at 9:45 a.m., and at Le Gourmand at 10:30 a.m. It is best to call for reservations, however, if one breakfast is full, just head on to the next! Santa does his usual song and dance, makes

times for photos, and – of course, has free gifts for all of the kiddies. 38 Degrees has their grand opening on Wednesday of this week. This has been a long-awaited opening and I am sure their first few days will be packed. The Sow House has also officially opened in the spot formerly known as Café Opera and it looks very interesting. The word is that their food is delicious and the décor is totally different than the previous restaurant. It looks like their front door is now directly on Myrtle Street (where the bar entrance used to be) and they have a small stage with entertainment in the larger dining room. True to the winter months, it is a relatively slow season for the Street Fair. I say relatively because the crowds have thinned out as usual, but the difference this RE is that there are more year DU than usual RE for Devendors CE DU for a D P makes cember, which CE D good-looking,RIC entertaining E show. Continuing in the street celebration mode, we’re

gearing up for our 5th Annual New Year’s Eve on Myrtle event. There will be a new band this year (Night Owl) and a new, higher stage so that everyone can see the live action. In addition, we will have better sound into the family area and the beer & wine garden. The New Year’s Eve Committee is especially proud that this year the event will include an enhanced family friendly area (open 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.) with more free offerings for the kiddies thanks to Monrovia Kiwanis and the Santa Anita Family YMCA and the City of Monrovia. As always, the event itself is totally free except for the $5 beverage charge in the Beer & Wine Garden. Once again, we remind everyone that the Garden is strictly for those aged 21 and over, with no babies or small children allowed. Alcoholic beverages are not allowed outside of the Garden except for designated sidewalk areas licensed by individual restaurants. Media Frenzy: Reporters Swarm San Bernardino Shooters’ Apartment By Terry Miller

In the wake of the mass murders in San Bernardino last week, the landlord of the killers who took 14 lives last Wednesday in San Bernardino allegedly allowed media access to their apartment in what was one of the most unprecedented and inexplicable scenes this reporter has ever witnessed following an investigation of a terrorist(s). Some reports say the landlord opened the door and the media stormed the apartment en masse. Others say reporters broke in. Whoever is correct, a herd of “journalists” armed with heavy broadcast cameras entered the Redlands, Calif. apartment where Syed Farook and Tashfeen Malik lived last Friday. Some reports claim that a reporter

hacks entering the macabre scene, apparently some curious neighbors out for a walk also popped in to see what they could find. Who knows what was taken as a “souvenir” of this rather astonishing set of circumstances which led to this behavior. Reporters showed anxious TV viewers the room of mass murderers Farook and Malik’s 6-month-old daughter, pointing to the obvious “this is the killers’ child’s crib and what appeared to be a prayer rug…” Like vultures, the broadcast and print media rummaged through the items in the home as if it was a rather macabre garage sale. In one clip aired, I witnessed “reporters” taking

serious risk. MSNBC aired an un-blurred driver’s license under the name Rafia Farook, who is Farook’s mother. The outlet also speculated that photos of a woman found in the apartment could be Malik, showing the photos on the live broadcast without verifying they were actually her. “MSNBC and other news organizations were invited into the home by the landlord after law enforcement officials had finished examining the site and returned control to the landlord,” the outlet said in a statement. “Although MSNBC was not the first crew to enter the home, we did have the first live shots from inside. We regret that we briefly showed images of photographs and identifica-

selfies in the apartment. What has the Fourth Estate become? Footage aired also captured a bed covered with papers, including a driver’s license, credit cards and copies of the Quran – even a bank statement, all clearly showing account numbers. Nothing was redacted until later when the press was criticized for such barbarous behavior. Some outlets reported that the landlord let the press into the apartment. But in an interview with CBS News, the landlord denied that he had opened the building to reporters, claiming he opened the door and the media simply rushed into the apartment. While any reporter probably would have entered the apartment based on the understanding that the landlord had approved it and it was no longer an active crime scene, many on Twitter pointed out that airing personal information about the shooters’ relatives puts those people at a

tion cards that should not have been aired without review.” By all accounts, the scene inside the apartment was also a media whirl, with outlets jockeying for shots and rummaging through the home. In addition to what can only be described as insane, hacks speculated on air about the couple leaving in a hurry just before the shootings last Wednesday. “We executed a search warrant on that apartment, and last night [Dec. 3] we turned that over back to the [landlord],” said David Bowdich, assistant director at the FBI field office in Los Angeles. “Once we turn that location back over to the occupants of that residence or once we board it up, anyone who goes in at that point, that’s got nothing to do with us.” Reporters were later removed from the apartment, though the circumstances of the expulsion were not clear.

removed a piece of plywood blocking the door that had been placed there by the FBI. He apparently said that he had permission from the landlord. In a display that raised eyebrows about journalistic integrity, news outlets made live broadcasts of their reporters entering the apartment of the San Bernardino shooters like it was a feeding frenzy. The FBI stated, in a press release, that they had completed their investigation of the premises last Thursday night and access was dependent on the owner/landlord of the property. The conduct of these “hacks” (to coin a British publication’s common term for journalists) was stunning to watch and most unbecoming of any serious news organization. Even the Old Grey Lady (The New York Times) admitted to being there and entering with a reporter and photographer. But it was not just

I’ve always considered the “sign ordinance” to be fairly ludicrous, as I often see people in costumes bouncing up and down with their signs on street corners. Why are they exempt? Turning the windmill again is a wonderful idea! Would also like to see the 76 ball spinning again, if those still exist. Marc Carlson Via ArcadiaWeekly.com I would love to see the windmill start up again. Having grown up in the area, I ate many a meal there. I have very fond memories of my parents and going there with them. Excellent work George! Phil Henry Via ArcadiaWeekly.com

Dear Editor, I attended the meeting on the mansionization of Arcadia at the Holly Avenue School. As a long-time Arcadia resident, I came away discouraged and very disappointed with what I heard. A continuing downhill spiral for a once clean and beautiful city.

Then I picked up the Arcadia Weekly paper and read through “Letters to the Editor.” They were great letters from Roger Nemrava, James Whitehall, and Mark Samarin. All three very eloquently stated the situation and offered solutions. These three residents would be wonderful on the Council. We need new leadership, not just the same old guys letting everything that was good in Arcadia slide away while they sit there waiting to retire and collect their various pensions. Sincerely, -Judith Rothwell (resident since 1971) - ARCADIA ARCADIA YESTERYEAR AND TODAY

When I arrived in Arcadia over 60 years ago we called our town a community of homes. We lived in and raised our families in single story homes which we quaintly called ranch-style. We had beautiful and wellmanicured front lawns (many in Dichondra) and the door was always open to neighbors and friends. Our children played together and, in our cul-de-sac, they played ball in the street. We had block parties, we decorated our houses for the holidays, and on our street we had Christmas candles on every lawn. As a town we were well-organized. There was a group to fit any interest. We were a cohesive community. We donated our money to many charitable and civic causes. We especially favored our schools. We invested a great deal of money, both in our schools and in the infrastructure of our city resources. Alas, the world is constantly in change. Sometimes we can see change only by looking backward, but in Arcadia we can see change on a daily basis on every street.

Many of our friends and neighbors have moved away. The New Arcadians have different lifestyles. They prefer larger homes and they especially like their privacy. They plant tall hedge rows in front of their homes to ensure their privacy. We seldom see their children at play. Of course I am writing with a broad brush. We Old Arcadians are so fortunate that these newcomers chose to invest in Arcadia. Our friends who have sold their homes got astonishingly high prices for them. The New Arcadians keep their homes looking immaculate. Many of them are involved with the Arcadia Chinese Association (ACA), which is an outstanding and civic-minded group. The ACA is a real blessing for our city. Their leaders are highly-respected and highlyregarded people. We have seen the New Arcadians taking leadership roles with the Methodist Hospital Foundation and other civic groups as well as the City Council. This is as it should be. It troubles me that some of the Old Arcadians believe that their lifestyles should be imposed on the New Arcadians. We loved our single story homes. They prefer much larger homes. They are now the New Arcadia. Why should we try to impose our life style on them? We should not change the rules of the game in the waning years of the Old Arcadia - and after so many Old Arcadians have sold their homes (lots) and the New Arcadians have built the houses they prefer. To paraphrase the Bard Shakespeare, our time on the stage of life is brief. The time of the Old Arcadia is passing quickly. In a very few years the people who want Arcadia to remain as it was years ago, they themselves will become history. -Jim Helms Former Mayor, City of Arcadia

City Hall Landscape Renovation Continues

“Anyone who has had the opportunity to stop by City Hall recently will have noticed that our City crews have been making tremendous strides in updating the landscaping at City Hall. As the attached photo illus-

trates, during the past two weeks, our team has laid a beautiful new paved walkway that will surround a new piece of public art, created two new bench pads, removed turf, and installed a new drip irrigation system

that will save water for years to come! Based on our progress to date, we are on track to finish the improvement project by the end of December 2015. Kudos to our team for their great work!” – Photo Courtesy City of Monrovia

“On Nov. 30, 2015, at around 12:30 a.m., an act of arson resulted in a fire causing significant damage at Monrovia High School. The City’s Fire Department responded to the call and ultimately, the fire was fully contained by 2 a.m. “In total, there were 18 fire units on scene, including 9 engines, 4 trucks, 1 squad, 1 air / light unit and 3 chief officers. Furthermore, there were over 50 firefighters from Monrovia, Arcadia, Pasadena, San Gabriel, San Marino and Alhambra Fire Departments that responded. Heavy fire damage impacted the administrative

offices located on the first floor, and moderate damage occurred in the room above the administrative office on the second floor. “After the fire was contained, City personnel from our Police Department, Fire Department, Public Services Department, and Community Development Department have spent significant time last week interfacing with and assisting Monrovia Unified School District (MUSD) personnel. To help facilitate and speed up the repair work, the MUSD has requested the ability to work around the clock to complete the needed repairs to

Monrovia High School. Given the emergency situation, the City has authorized the MUSD staff and contractors to work beyond normal construction hours. It is important to note that while most of the repair work being coordinated will take place inside Monrovia High School, there will be outdoor activity at the site as work crews access different portions of the facility. Furthermore, the MUSD also shared with the City that they have hired a private security company to be on site to help monitor the work being conducted.” Content taken from the City Manager’s Report.

New Albertson’s Site Owners Planning to Subdivide Lot

The old Albertsons wil be subdivided.

“Last week, [Monrovia] staff met with representatives from Warner Pacific Properties to discuss their plans for the former Albertson’s site located on Huntington Drive. Based on those discussions, it appears that Warner Pacific Properties has acquired around +/91,000 square feet of building space that they would like to subdivide for three different users. At this point

in time, there are multiple possible tenants that are being consulted and City staff is working with the developer on identifying the best possible mix of users at the location. “In addition to subdividing the +/- 91,000 square feet of building space located at the former Albertsons facility, the new owners have also indicated their desire to build a +/- 2,500 square foot

One of the more unique features at Station Square will be the fountains near the Depot. Additionally, the kids’ play areas have, of course, toy trains to play on. We will have more details in next week’s issue.

Thanksgiving in Zion and Bryce – Better Than the Grand Canyon! Story and Photo by Jennifer Schlueter When my friend Lena asked me if I wanted to accompany her to Zion National Park, I had to look up where it was and if it was worth a trip. After seeing pictures online, my decision was clear: Absolutely! Since she had friends in Salt Lake City, we would add two days there and, thanks to a recommendation, one day in Bryce National Park. We expected the drive to St. George, (a small town close to Zion, about 2 hours north-east from Vegas) to be about five hours and 30 minutes, but LA traffic turned it into an 11 hour drive filled with our singing to *NSYNC, Destiny’s Child, and the Backstreet Boys, and indulging in English toffee, German Pfeffernuesse, and popcorn – something had to keep us awake, right? The one hour time change made us arrive at almost 2 a.m. at the Coronada Inn. Lena’s friends John and Beth had arrived hours before and had already slept when we woke them up to get into our hotel room (by the way, 2 nights, 2 hotels, 4 people, cost us only $27 total!). That night I did not sleep because of loud snoring. Furthermore, the air was so dry that we woke up

coughing. All in all, it was much too cold for someone who is accustomed to the LA climate. Our hotel offered us healthy treats such as fresh waffles, cereal, white bread with jelly, and orange juice for breakfast, on which we feasted before we took off to Zion. Instead of being smart and parking one of our cars outside of the park, we took both cars and paid separately even though we all could have just paid for one pass. The nice lady at the entrance gave us a map where everything (free shuttle transportation, hikes and their difficulty, history etc.) was described. You start off at the Visitor Center, where the shuttles with nice and knowledgeable drivers take you to different stops within the canyon from where you can hike various trails with magical names like the Weeping Rock, Emerald Pools, or Angels Landing. We started at the very end of the canyon, at the Riverwalk that took us to the so-called Narrows, where the river flows through a narrow rock formation. In the summertime, you can walk through the river. Next, we hiked up the

Zion canyon.

hill on the Emerald Pools trail with the lower, middle, and upper pool – several small lakes and waterfalls – and descended on the Kayenta trail, which – out of the three – was the one with the very best views: These three hikes were enough for us on this cold Thanksgiving day, and because we did not want to miss dinner at a place we had researched beforehand,

we left to our next motel in Panguitch. The drive took us about one hour and 30 minutes through Zion and later through the mainly flat, snow-covered landscape of Utah, which is - surprising to me - full of German bakeries that I wish I could have tried, but, unfortunately, everything was closed due to the holiday. At the Blue Pine Motel we were greeted by a very

friendly receptionist. We then dropped off our stuff in our cozy room before leaving to Ruby’s Inn by Bryce to enjoy our Thanksgiving dinner. The line was long and the restaurant was packed because the Inn was one of the few places offering Thanksgiving dinner for travelers. The buffet displayed typical Thanksgiving dishes: turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, macaroni and cheese, etc. for only $20! Exhausted from hiking and in a food coma, all of us fell asleep early. Again - a night with almost no sleep. The snoring was the least of my problems this time… The heater was on blast and all of us were sweating, but turning it off in the icy weather, barely over 0°F, would have meant freezing (to death). So, we ended up increasing the motel’s electricity bill for the night running the heater AND the AC simultaneously (which finally accounted for a comfortable sleeping temperature). The next morning, we woke up to a two-inch snow blanket and I quickly began to panic about how we would drive our California rental, which was obviously unequipped with winter tires, to

Salt Lake City later that day. Everyone calmed me down and said that it would all melt by the afternoon (I recognized that I had officially become more Californian than German). Fortunately, John and Beth drove their car to Bryce, and Lena and I tagged along since they had been there before. At Bryce, we also went in with a pass and received a map, but this time, we were able to drive around in our own car instead of shuttles. This was great because it was freezing outside and my California-weather hiking shoes did not quite keep my feet warm. John took us to different viewpoints named Sunrise and Sunset, but the best one was the Inspiration Point. After a short walk on a trail with lots of snow and no guardrails, we made it to a stunning view overlooking much of this impressive canyon: After Bryce, we drove to Salt Lake City, spent two wonderful days in one of its suburbs, and drove 12 hours back to LA thanks to Thanksgiving traffic. Going for a bike ride down the Montrose trail? Make a pit stop at the Cycle de Pro shop for any of your bike necessities and get your fill of coffee. Bicycle boutique meets espresso bar, Cycle de Pro is a store that offers repair services for bikes, sells cycle parts and gear, and serves delicious coffee drinks. Started by Vincent Choi in 1999, the company first began as an online cycle parts and accessories store. Fast forward a decade, Cycle de Pro now has a bicycle shop in Sierra Madre and a warehouse for their online store in City of Industry. The Cycle de Pro bike store is the perfect place for bike and coffee aficionados. A store and a cafe where bikers of all levels, whether beginners or pros, are welcome, the shop aims to be a comfortable place where cyclists can meet and talk about bikes over a nice cup of coffee. About every Saturday morning, a large of cyclists gather for the store’s nitrogen cold brew and other coffee drinks after going on one of the largest group rides in Southern California. According to the store’s manager, Simon Kovara, Cycle de Pro is community-oriented store that strives to support local cyclists and encourage others to ride. “We’re definitely very community oriented,” Kovara said. “We like to support a lot of the local riding clubs and just make sure we’re in a community that supports people who just want to commute or even if you’re just getting out to ride around the park.” Cycle de Pro holds special events to connect local cyclists with one another and hosts exciting promotional events for bicycle manufacturing companies. Recently, the owner of the bicycle clothing brand Le Col--Yanto Barker--held a fun event for customers by organizing a group ride from the store to the Rose Bowl and back. The bicycle boutique also holds meet and greets for cyclists in the area and organizes a large group ride during the Tour de France. Kovara calls the store’s events a “good way to get people inspired and into riding bit more.” Cycle de Pro considers itself one of most competent bicycle repair shops in Sierra Madre. It is a full repair shop that will fix anything and everything bike-related. Customers are welcome to just walk-in for repairs or they can call ahead for a repair appointment, especially during the summer and other busier times during the year. In addition to repairs, the store also sells higher-end bicycle parts

Our choreography incorporates different movements that the audience won’t expect but will enjoy thoroughly.” “It has always been a goal to dance to a live orchestra. I am beyond excited,” added Konkrete, whose credits include America’s Best Dance Crew. “We have all worked together before and the rehearsals are coming along naturally. Los Angeles Master Chorale Continues Holiday Tradition With ‘Messiah’ story and photo By Nathaniel Cayanan ‘Tis the season…to be bombarded by advertisements for Christmasthemed productions. Everywhere you look, there seems to be some play, film, or concert that vies for our attention and the task has become finding which shows are worth going to in between the occasional fistfight over presents at the mall. Luckily, one sure show

Soloists Hayden Eberhart (soprano), Janelle Destefano (mezzo soprano), Jon Lee Keenan (tenor), and Steve Pence (baritone) all serve up a variety of voices that give eloquent delivery to the recitatives and arias, especially in the second and third parts in which they all belt out some fine singing. Keenan is particularly a delight to watch and listen to,

Los Angeles Master Chorale during a standing ovation for their performance of Handel’s Messiah.

to attend is one of the many by the Los Angeles Master Chorale (LAMC) who are performing a series of holiday concerts at Walt Disney Concert Hall this December. In fact, this past weekend, the Grammy-nominated chorus performed Messiah, one of George Frideric Handel’s most famous works, with scriptural texts provided by Charles Jennens. The oratorio tells the story of Christ in the three parts, the first about the prophecy and birth of the savior, the second about his sacrificial death, and the third about his glorious resurrection. Adeptly led by conductor Grant Gershon, who also serves as one of LAMC’s Artistic Directors, the chorus, orchestra, and soloists deliver a consistently fine-tuned concert that is deserving of appreciation from even the most seasoned concert goer.

as he exhibits an impressive level of skill and close attention to the lyrics, pronunciation and pitch, mixing innate instinct and carefully

crafted artistry. Complementing these voices is an orchestra that effortlessly plays each movement with incredible precision, which is especially true in the pastoral symphony “Pifa.” In this number, the orchestra plays well enough to give a clear mental picture of serene nature and green mountains that usher in shepherds. And, of course, the most important part of concert is Handel’s culminating “Hallelujah” chorus, which the LAMC performs beautifully, as they do in pretty much every movement they sing. Even Gershon himself was aware during Sunday night’s performance how much they had perfected the tune, as he nodded his head with a level of well-deserved swagger, as the audience showered the chorus with applause. It is worth mentioning that the LAMC will be offering a variety of performances for the rest of the year. In fact, in addition to their second performance of Messiah on Dec. 20, LAMC will also conduct a sing-a-long ver-

sion on Dec. 16. Overall, with strong soloists, orchestra, and chorus, the Los Angeles Master Chorale’s holiday concerts stand out as a must do this holiday season.

Los Angeles Master Chorale will perform Handel’s Messiah one more time this year at the Walt Disney Concert Hall, 111 South Grand Ave., Los Angeles, on Dec. 20. Tickets range from

$29 to $129. Group rates are available. Children under six not admitted. For tickets and information about Messiah and other concerts, please call (213) 972-7282, or visit www.lamc.org.

Temple City High School’s Brightside Singers perform at Arcadia Woman’s Club Holiday Party.

Enjoying the lovely traditions of their 101 years, the Arcadia Woman’s Club celebrated in style, at their Dec. 2 annual Christmas party, held at their historic clubhouse. Two decorated Christmas trees, one in gold and Burgundy in the front lounge and a tall multicolored tree on the stage brought raves. But it was the embankment of toys for all aged children for the Foster Child project that put joy in everyone’s heart. The eggnog and champagne pre-luncheon reception also contributed to the party atmosphere. A traditional ham luncheon with Waldorf salad was served. The popular Brightside Singers from Temple City High School pleased the audience with their knockout dance and song routines, some from their big show

ORDINANCE NO. 960 A SUMMARY OF ORDINANCE NO. 960 INTRODUCED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ROSEMEAD, CALIFORNIA, AUTHORIZING AN AMENDMENT TO CHAPTER 13.08 OF THE ROSEMEAD MUNICIPAL CODE AMENDING THE WATER EFFICIENT LANDSCAPE STANDARDS AND GUIDELINES TO BE CONSISTENT WITH STATE LAW On December 8, 2015, the City Council of the City of Rosemead introduced by title only, at first reading, Ordinance No. 960 “An Ordinance of the Rosemead City Council, Amending Chapter 13.08

of the Rosemead Municipal Code Amending the Water Efficient Landscape Standards Guidelines to be Consistent with State Law”. The Ordinance amends Chapter 13.08 of the Rosemead Municipal Code “Water Efficient Landscaping Regulations” and related “Water Efficient Landscape Guidelines” to comply with State law. The amendment focuses on increasing water savings for new construction through more efficient irrigation systems, limiting turf/grass area, onsite stormwater capture, and use of greywater. The following is a summary of the significant revisions that have been made in accordance with the State Model Water Landscape Ordinance. • Project Size Applicability: Landscape area thresholds that trigger compliance with the Ordinance have been reduced. New residential, commercial, industrial, and public development projects that include landscape areas of 500 square feet or more are subject to the Ordinance. The previous landscape size threshold for new development projects was 2,500 square feet. The size threshold for existing landscapes remains unchanged at 2,500 square feet. Only rehabilitated landscapes that are associated with a building permit, plan check, or design review are subject to the new provisions. • Prescriptive Compliance Option: A simplified landscape plan submittal is offered as an option for projects with landscape areas between 500 square feet and 2,500 square feet or for projects that use greywater. A Prescriptive Compliance checklist is outlined in Appendix “A” (of Exhibit “A” in the Ordinance) titled “Guidelines for implementation of the City of Rosemead Water Efficient Landscape Ordinance.” • Definitions: Clarified and expanded definitions of technical terms have been incorporated into the Ordinance and Guidelines. • Water Budget: The maximum amount of water that can be applied to the total project landscape area is reduced. This reduction limits the amount of high water use plants, such as cool season turf/grass, that can be used in projects. The water limit effectively reduces the amount of turf to approximately 25% of the residential landscape areas, and makes the use of turf in nonresidential projects infeasible. Special function areas, such as active recreation landscapes, edible gardens, landscapes that use recycled water are given an increased water allowance. • Landscape Design Plan: Prior to planting, 4 yards of compost must be incorporated per 1,000 square feet of permeable area. Compacted soils must be transformed to a friable state. The depth of mulch was increased from 2 to 3 inches. Greywater and stormwater retention components must be indicated on the plans. • Irrigation Design Plan: Dedicated landscape water meters or submeters are required for residential landscapes over 5,000 square feet and for nonresidential landscapes over 1,000 square feet. The minimum width of areas that can be overhead irrigated was increased from 8 feet to 10 feet. Landscape areas less than 10 feet wide must be irrigated with subsurface drip or other alternative system that does not produce spray or runoff. The revised Ordinance requires the irrigation auditor to be a local agency auditor or third party auditor to reduce conflicts of interested. • Public Education: New model homes that are required provide water efficient landscapes, are also required to provide signage demonstrating low water use approaches to landscaping. • Reporting: Local agencies are required to report on their ordinance implementation and enforcement efforts to the California Department of Water Resources on an annual basis. Let Your Imagination Fly - Arcadia Council PTSA Reflections By Jonathan Tsou It is invigorating to think about what would happen if you let your imagination fly. On Dec. 2, 15 Arcadia High School students and 44 Arcadia middle school and elementary school students were recognized by the Arcadia PTSA Council. DECEMBER COLLEGE SEARCH GUIDE By May S. Ruiz Cool and brisk weather, with wispy clouds scattered on clear blue skies, usually characterize December in California. Children are eagerly anticipating the Christmas season and winter break. As we head towards the end of the year, some students are finishing up on the first semester, grateful that they are halfway through this school year. FRESHMAN What a relief it must be for your 9th grader – he or she has survived the first semester of high school. While your children’s thoughts may be all about Christmas vacation, this would be a good time to evaluate their progress. Remind them that while first semester grades do not show on the final transcript, these are barometers of their academic strengths and weaknesses. Encourage them to use the winter break to plan how to improve where needed and how to build on their suc-

cesses going into the second semester. SOPHOMORE If your children are taking Advanced Placement (AP) courses they should also have taken the AP and SAT II exams. They should take the time to meet with their college counselors for guidance on how to improve their test scores, if necessary. Now is the time to look at their interests to determine what college course they might be suited for. Based on their aptitude and grades, they will have to start planning on their course options for 11th grade. They can also start looking at which colleges offer the course they might want to pursue. JUNIOR This is an all-important year for your 11th grader and it is one of the busiest of their high school career. Your children should be able to successfully balance their academic and extra-curricular responsibilities. They should

have already taken rigorous course loads, participated in campus activities and moved into positions of leadership in whatever extra-curricular endeavor they chose. Your children should start preparing for the ACT or SAT exams either by taking practice tests online or by taking a prep course. By this time, college counselors have met with you and your children and given you an overview of the college application process. They should already have been to at least one college fair and have met with a few admissions officers. It might also be an opportune time to visit some colleges, at least the ones in California, before the spring break when you might consider going to out-of-town universities. If you have not thought about college visits, now is the time to put it in your calendar. I cannot emphasize enough how important it is for your children

to see the campus for themselves. There is nothing more unfortunate than for them to matriculate to a college only to be miserable after the first few months. Adjusting to life away from one’s parents and the reality of college life is bad enough, finding out they

are in the wrong school is just an added worry. SENIOR While kids all around are excited about the Christmas holidays – thinking about what movies they want to watch, and where to spend their time dur-

ing their winter vacation – your high school senior is sweating over his or her personal essay or feverishly writing... See website for full article: PasadenaIndependent.com
