SuperScooper Firefighting Aircraft to Arrive in LA County Aug. 15

Red Flag Warnings Issued, Brown Declares State of Emergency By terry miller Los Angeles County Fire Department has secured the early arrival of two CL-415 SuperScoopers fire-fighting aircraft leased from the government of Quebec. The SuperScoopers will arrive for service in Los Angeles County on August 15 to help with the anticipated heavy fire season which is upon us.

According to Cal Fire, there are currently21 wildfires burning in the state. The National Weather Service issues Red Flag Warnings and Fire Weather Watches to alert fire departments of the onset, or possible onset, of critical weather and dry conditions that could lead to rapid or dramatic increases in wild-

fire activity. A Red Flag Warning is issued for weather events which may result in extreme fire behavior that will occur within 24 hours. A Fire Weather Watch is issued when weather conditions could exist in the next 12-72 hours. A Red Flag Warning is the highest alert. During these times

West Covina Man Sentenced to Prison for Arson A 43-year-old man was sentenced today to eight years in state prison for setting fires at several restaurant locations through-

out the San Gabriel Valley, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced. At today’s court appearance, David Lin of West Covina pleaded no contest to six felony counts: five counts of arson of property of another and one count of arson of a structure in case No. KA108931. register as an arson offender for life. Deputy District Attorney Elizabeth Padilla, who prosecuted the case, said Lin committed arson at numerous restaurant locations between Jan. 27 and Feb. 3. On Feb. 3, the defendant was at Ten Ren’s Tea Time in Walnut when he reportedly entered a bathroom and set the toilet on fire. After he exited the bathroom, a customer entered and noticed a fire, at which point authorities were called. Later that day, police apprehended Lin and arrested him in connection with the incident. The case was investigated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

As the project continues to move ahead, the Los Angeles Football Club yesterday announced to the Coliseum Commission that they have selected Legends to oversee project management for the new venue and PCL Construction Services, Inc. (PCL) as general contractor to build the to-be-developed stateof-the-art soccer stadium in South Los Angeles. The new development, which will bring $250 million in private investments to South Los Angeles, will be anchored by a new 22,000seat soccer-specific venue. Man Charged in Immigration Fraud Case A man accused of posing as a law enforcement officer and defrauding immigrant families to get their loved ones out of custody pleaded not guilty today to burglary and grand theft charges, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced. Gregory Chavez (dob 1/22/64) is charged in case BA438365 with 23 counts of grand theft, nine counts of first-degree burglary, four counts of attempted grand theft, two counts of perjury and convicted felon with a firearm, and one count each of second-degree burglary and counterfeit seal. Bail was set at $1.2 million and Chavez is scheduled to return to court Aug. 11 for a preliminary

hearing setting. Dating back to September 2010, Chavez falsely promised he could help immigration detainees with their cases. Chavez, an unlicensed private investigator, often allegedly represented himself as a “special agent” who carried a badge and boasted about working with a team of law enforcement officers. Deputy District Attorney Leonard Torrealba of the Consumer Protection Division said Chavez collected about $75,000 from 21 immigrant detainees’ families but failed to provide any services. None of the detainees were ever released as a result of Chavez’s work, Torrealba added. Chavez was arrested Wednesday at his home in
