Will ‘LA Partyworks’ Continue to Run Monrovia’s Friday Night Street Fair? City Sends Notice of Intent to Terminate Franchise Agreement By Terry Miller and By susan motander Last week the city of Monrovia issued a warning to Los Angeles Partyworks demanding that the company comply with the terms of their contract to run the Friday evening Monrovia Street Fair. This action came just days after Kurt Anderson,
who has long been affiliated with the prior manager of the Friday event, presented the city council with a long list of what he called violations of the agreement with the city. At that time Monrovia City Manager Oliver Chi stated that the oversight committee in charge of the Friday night event had already scheduled a meeting for the next day. Firebombing Suspects Arrested in Mexico - Returned to US Soil Sunday By Terry Miller On the morning of Saturday April 25, 2015, Sheriff’s Homicide detectives, members of the Arson/Explosives detail and deputies from the Temple Sheriff’s Station responded to an arson fire which occurred at the “Cheque Tires” auto business at 1252 Santa Anita Avenue in the city of South El Monte. However, he also noted that he and the oversight committee had real concerns about the set up and take-down of the event as well as about the general safety of the festival. He explained that the
city was obligated by the contract to give L.A. Partyworks formal notice of its concerns. That notice reads in part: “In conformance with the provisions of Section 14, this notice has been prepared to provide LA PartyWorks with requisite advanced notification that the City intends to terminate the Agreement effective August 8, 2015. Detectives are investigating the shooting death of a teenager Monday in Rosemead. The shooting occurred 10:10 a.m. in the 8700 block of Valley Boulevard. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.. Deputies arrived to find a handgun on the floor and a woman crying next to the body of a juvenile male shot in the upper torso. Lai Hang, 49, of Rosemead, was detained for questioning in the fatal shooting of her son on July 27, 2015, according to the LASD. The victim was later identified as 17-year-old George Hang, a resident of Rosemead, according to a Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department spokesperson. Detectives detained the victim’s mother, 49-year-old Lai Hang, also a resident of Rosemead, for questioning. She was later arrested for murder and was being held in lieu of $1 million bail. The motive for the murder is still under investigation. Detectives say the mothPlease see page 2
Capital Murder Charges Filed In Hollywood Shooting A 31-year-old man was charged today with capital murder in the July 5 fatal sidewalk shooting of a woman in Hollywood, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced. Ezeoma Chigozie Obioha (DOB 6/17/84) is scheduled to be arraigned today at the Foltz Criminal Justice Center, Department 30, in case BA438448. Prosecutors will ask that he be held without bail. Deputy District Attorney Craig Hum with the Major Crimes Division is handling the case. Obioha is charged with one count of murder with the special circumstances of lying in wait and murder for financial gain in the July 5 shooting death of Carrie
Melvin. Melvin was shot once as she was walking with her boyfriend near Sunset Boulevard and McCadden Place at about 10 p.m. The complaint also alleges Obioha personally and intentionally discharged a shotgun. Prosecutors said the murder was the result of a business dispute.
The special circumstances make Obioha eligible for the death penalty. Prosecutors will decide later whether to seek death or life in prison without the possibility of parole if he is convicted. The case remains under investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department.
