Supreme Court Rules Same-Sex Marriage Legal in United States; Supporters Hail Civil Rights Victory
BY TERRY MILLER In a landmark opinion, a divided Supreme Court ruled Friday that states cannot ban same-sex marriage, establishing a new civil right and handing gay rights advocates a victory that until very recently would have seemed unthinkable. Word travelled fast and Pasadena Pride Center along with Planned Parenthood quickly mobilized a small celebration at the Metro Lake Ave Gold Line Station Friday night. Scores of men, women, and children held up signs like “Love Wins” and “Equal Rights” and even a couple of “Monks 4 Eqaulity [sic]” to the sounds of commuters honking their horns in solidarity on the commute home. Historic Monrovia Carriage Barn Saved BY SUSAN MOTANDER
On Saturday a celebration was held on the new site of a very old Monrovia Carriage Barn. Several years ago, the barn was threatened with destruction when the house with which it was associated was sold. Through the efforts of the Monrovia Historic Preservation Group (MOHPG), the
carriage barn was saved. The barn, built in 1890, and house, built in 1889, sat on a double lot and the new owners of the house wanted to build a house on the second lot. They offered to give the barn to anyone who would move it to a new location. One of the owners even donated funds to assist

in moving the barn. One member of MOPHG stepped up and made a substantial pledge toward the monies necessary for the move. Another member, Jimmy Hendrix, scouted for a site and was the supervisor of the dismantling of the barn. Eventually a homeSEE PG. 12

Celebration of LaJoya McCoy’s Life July 3 Businesswoman LaJoya McCoy’s body was discovered June 16th about a mile from her home in Monrovia. She had been reported missing by family the week before. Monrovia police discovered signs of foul play at her home in the 800 block of West Olive Avenue before the body was found, according to the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Depart-
ment. Her death is being investigated as a homicide. McCoy, 31, was a single mother of two children. She also owned a clothing boutique. There will be a celebration of LaJoya McCoy’s Life July 3 at The First A.M.E. Church, at 1700 N. Raymond Avenue in Pasadena. The memorial will begin at 11 a.m.
