Triple Crown champion American Pharoah arrived back at his barn at Santa Anita last Thursday from Churchill Downs. Arriving First Class on ‘Air Horse One,’ the Triple Crown winner seemed relaxed albeit a bit tired from his travels. The three-year-old colt, owned and bred by Ahmed Zayat and trained by Bob Baffert, landed at Ontario International Airport from Louisville Thursday morning, around 9:45 a.m. He was transported with a sixunit law enforcement code 3 escort to Santa Anita. Duarte Council Authorizes $16M Budget; Projected Deficit Offset by Reserve Funds BY JOE TAGLIERI
The Duarte City Council on Tuesday approved a $16 million budget for the upcoming fiscal year that begins July 1. Revenue continues to sag due to persistently sluggish economic conditions at the local, state, and federal levels leading to a projected deficit of nearly $700,000, according to a presentation by Assistant City Manager Kristen Petersen. However, this short-
fall between the estimated $15.3 million in revenue and general fund expenditures for 2015-16 is offset by the city’s appropriation of fiscal reserves and additional grant funding to cover increases in spending for programs that provide a range of services to Duarte residents, Petersen reported. The city’s reserves total an estimated $7.4 million at the end of the current fiscal
