Triple Crown champion American Pharoah arrived back at his barn at Santa Anita last Thursday from Churchill Downs. Arriving First Class on ‘Air Horse One,’ the Triple Crown winner seemed relaxed albeit a bit tired from his travels. The three-year-old colt, owned and bred by Ahmed Zayat and trained by Bob Baffert, landed at Ontario International Airport from Louisville Thursday morning, around 9:45 a.m. He was transported with a sixunit law enforcement code 3 escort to Santa Anita. Duarte Council Authorizes $16M Budget; Projected Deficit Offset by Reserve Funds BY JOE TAGLIERI
The Duarte City Council on Tuesday approved a $16 million budget for the upcoming fiscal year that begins July 1. Revenue continues to sag due to persistently sluggish economic conditions at the local, state, and federal levels leading to a projected deficit of nearly $700,000, according to a presentation by Assistant City Manager Kristen Petersen. However, this short-
fall between the estimated $15.3 million in revenue and general fund expenditures for 2015-16 is offset by the city’s appropriation of fiscal reserves and additional grant funding to cover increases in spending for programs that provide a range of services to Duarte residents, Petersen reported. The city’s reserves total an estimated $7.4 million at the end of the current fiscal

This is farcical. John Wuo acts like a spoiled child and a bully, against all of Arcadia, by voting to suspend the ongoing review of the city’s building code, and then claims racism when he’s called out in a newsletter for a few of his other bad decisions. His latest votes behind closed doors on May 5 are simply vindictively and punitive to all of Arcadia. Mayor Kovacic asked for a vote to continue the code updates for commercial and R-3 zones only. Even this was defeated 3-2 by Chandler, Tay and Wuo. But they have absolutely no defense for their votes. None. Not a single fact was presented in support of their decision. I’ve observed these three men for several council meetings now and Chandler, Tay, and Wuo alternate from acting like two-year olds with hurt feelings to vindictive, mean-spirited bullies bent on getting their way or else. Residents, businesses, the Chamber of Commerce be damned. Arcadia deserves better than Chandler, Tay, and Wuo. They should do us all a favor and resign. Let thoughtful and professional women and men fill their seats. Folks who will take the oath of office seriously and put the people’s business, all the people of Arcadia, ahead of their own personal grudges and petty feelings. As Mayor Kovacic said last night (paraphasing) “our role is to lead Arcadia, to be proactive and not reactive.” We need more leaders like Mr. Kovacic and Mr. Beck, and not mean bullies like Mr. Chandler, Mr. Tay and Mr. Wuo.

Black License Plates Are Back
In 2012, when Assemblyman Mike Gatto (D-Glendale) introduced AB 1658 to create the California Legacy License Plate Program, he wanted to do something nice for those who preserve California’s classic-car heritage. Such enthusiasts often view Sacramento as the source of pesky regulations. But even peskier is the fact that after completing a full restoration of that classic Mustang, a car owner had to affix a seven-digit, bright-white, out-of-period license plate on it. Today, the DMV announced that production of California's historic black plates has finally begun, and those who ordered them via the Legacy License Plate Program will begin receiving them within the next two to three
weeks. Gatto’s AB 1658, signed into law in 2012, authorized the California Legacy License Plate Program, instructing the DMV to reissue iconic plates from California’s past. According to the DMV, the black plates, which were originally issued from 1963-1969, were among the fastest specialty plates ever to achieve the 7,500 applications necessary to be issued. “Aside from not salting our roads, California doesn't often do much for automobile enthusiasts. This is an easy way for the state to enable everyone from the backyard restorer, to the nostalgic, to the purchaser of a retro-styled automobile to add that extra bit of detail for those of us who appreciate the classic era of automobile design,” said Gatto.

Have you ever wondered how an animal rescue organization, such as Lifeline for Pets, gets its animals? We are often asked about this fascinating and rewarding experience. The most commonplace way we acquire animals is when pet owners, for various responsible and irresponsible reasons, need to rehome their pet. Sometimes no family member or friend will step up to help, and a shelter is contacted. This happens so often, in fact, that we fill up and cannot take more. Advice: Have a plan, folks--have a solid emergency plan for your pets! Another way we take in animals is by rescuing them from a harmful situation, such as a dog with no identification wandering the streets, or a stray cat that no one will help, or kittens trapped under a house about to be demolished. If there was an animal rescue award for heroism and bravery, I would vote for the intrepid trappers. These are the experienced rescuers who, at all hours in dangerous conditions, do TNR, where trapped, feral cats are neutered and then released back to the colony. Sometimes, one of these cats is deemed friendly and is sheltered. One such cat is Monroe. When trapped, he was in dire need, with mange, a torn up neck, blanketed with fleas-and FIV+. Yet, he could be held and petted. With us, he began to feel better and improve. He is now quite a loverboy and ready for a home. Another case involved two mama cats. Homeless folks had been feeding and socializing them, but there was no money or access to vet care or spaying. Ariel, a

beautiful tabby, was pregnant again--very. Elsa, Ariel’s daughter, had just had five kittens. They were roaming trails and tunnels. Lifeline was contacted-could we help? tion can be unclear and contradictory. Shazi, not one to leave a stone unturned, or a kitten lost, was determined to persevere. Armed with trusty traps, good smelling bait, and vague tips, she entered the area. Long story short: the first night she caught Ariel, who gave birth the next day to six babies, safe and warm in our cat pad. Two nights later, Elsa was caught. But where were her five kittens? Time was getting short, as the kittens would not survive without their mom’s milk. Best way was to return with Elsa, in a large cage, who would call for her frightened kittens. It took three more days, but the plan worked. It was a tearful moment for all of us to see the heartwarming reunion of Elsa and her babies--stressed and ragged, but unharmed. Our vet exam produced a clean bill of health, and her kittens have now all been adopted. Not all stories end so well. Shelters have been experiencing a “kitten explosion” this year--more so than ever. The public can help by spaying/neutering strays, and by finding homes themselves instead of asking already overloaded shelters to take them. Adopt an adult pet or two, like Ariel and Elsa, or easy special needs, like Monroe. Reputable shelters know their animals very well, and work hard to make the adoption a good fit. Lake Los Angeles Woman Charged With Murdering Boyfriend With Canned Foods
On June 18, a woman was charged with killing her 59-year-old boyfriend by striking him in the head with cans of food, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced. Deputy District Attorney Jon Hatami said Linda Clarene Jackson (DOB 1/7/56) of Lake Los Angeles faces one count of murder in case MA066297. The
felony complaint alleges Jackson used canned food as a deadly and dangerous weapon and that she was convicted in 2005 for making criminal threats in case BA284464. Arraignment was scheduled the afternoon of June 18 in Department A1 of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Antelope Valley Branch. On June 16, Jackson allegedly

killed David Ruiz while he was at her house by bludgeoning him in the head with the canned foods, the prosecutor said. Hatami will recommend more than $1 million bail for the defendant. Former Business Manager at O.C. Private School Sentenced to 41 Months for Embezzling $2 Million A Trabuco Canyon man who admitted embezzling more than $2 million while managing a private elementary school was sentenced recently to three years and five months in federal prison, announced Stephanie Yonekura, the Acting United States Attorney for the Central District of California, and Bill L. Lewis, the Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office. The Honorable Dean D. Pregerson sentenced Ricardo Nieva, 50, to 41 months in federal prison. Judge Pregerson also ordered Nieva to pay restitution in the amount of $2,093,667.84. Nieva pleaded guilty to two counts of wire fraud in connection with the embezzlement scheme in 2014. According to court documents, Nieva was the business manager at The Pegasus School, in Huntington Beach from 1995 until September
2013. While Nieva held that position, he was authorized to sign checks drawn on the school’s bank accounts to conduct the school’s business. Nieva was not authorized to withdraw money for business unrelated to the school. Beginning in late 2006, and continuing until around May 2013, Nieva knowingly defrauded the Pegasus School by signing checks payable to himself and cashing those checks drawn on the school’s bank accounts without authorization. Nieva cashed 256 checks that were deposited into his personal account via wire transfers from the school’s bank account. The total loss to the school was more than $2 million. In order to avoid detection, Nieva altered bank statements and checks. He also prepared bogus summaries, ledgers and monthly
A 3-year-old girl died in Pomona on Father’s Day afternoon after she was left in the family car, police officials said. The child’s family called 911 after Kiara Li was found unconscious in the vehicle just before 5 p.m. Sunday, Pomona police officials said in a statement. Police and fire personnel were called to the home on Rancho Jurupa Place. Paramedics took Kiara to Pomona Valley Hospital where she later died.
Investigators learned the family had been out together before she was discovered. When they arrived home, police say her parents and other siblings thought the girl had gotten out of the car along with everyone else. “Our initial findings are consistent with this incident being a tragic accident,” said a police statement. An autopsy and additional information related to this incident are still pending.

This investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The case was prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office.

Actor Randall Park, Yahoo Style Editor-in-Chief Joe Zee, and BuzzFeed Publisher Dao Nguyen will be honored at the 2015 V3 Digital Media Conference, to be presented on June 26 and 27 in celebration of Asian American contributions to media and culture. The fourth annual conference, known as V3con, will be presented by the Los Angeles Chapter of the Asian American Journalists Association. The event recognizes the “Vision. Visibility. Voice” of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in digital and social media, with the goal of showcasing the most influential and interesting Asian Americans online while connecting diverse communities and building new media skills. Perhaps even more pressing in the post-Great Recession age is: what activities can we enjoy together that won’t cost our family too much? Each week, Beacon Media News will take a quick glimpse at free entertaining activities in Los Angeles in hopes that this summer can be one to remember (and one that won’t break the bank). If you have a particularly active family that enjoys being outdoors and could use some exercise together, Chantry Flat is the place for you. For those of us in the San Gabriel Valley, Chantry Flat is just 10-30 minutes away from wherever you call home. For any of you in other parts of Los Angeles, there is a chance that Chantry Flat is a bit further. However, once you visit – from near or far – you will realize that it was

If possible, try to come in the morning and on a weekday. Like other better-known hiking areas, Chantry is busier on weekends and it is always a good rule of thumb to attempt to hike earlier in the day during the summer (because afternoon tempera-
area. Just be sure to clean up whatever you bring with you. You will be entertained on your hike as well as immersed in the history of the mountainous area. One of the largest trails (at over 28 miles) is the Gabrielino Trail. In addition, you might decide to take a trail that leads you pass groups of historic cabins (some that have been there since the early 1900s). No matter what trail you choose, you will be surrounded by trees, birds, rocks, fresh air, and even streams of water. When I visited, I chose to hike to Sturtevant Falls (named after the famous pack station of Chanty Flat). For a beginning-intermediate hiker, I believe it is one of the best hikes you can take in Los Angeles. It is a little over three miles. Remember, you are hiking into the canyon, so you will have to hike up and out (be sure to preserve energy and water as well as consider time). I was overwhelmed that such a beautiful hike existed just a few short minutes from my home. The climax of the hike is the waterfall. Cascading down mossy rock into a small stream, it was a blissful place to rest. Taking a family for a hike is all about deciding which suits your family best. The wonderful aspect of Chantry is that you have several choices. Chantry Flat offers a wonderful and active option to enjoy a day off on your own or with your kids. Just minutes outside of the city, you will feel like you entered into another world.

These are just some of the 210 murals at the 23rd Annual Pasadena Chalk Festival held at the Paseo Colorado on June 20 and 21. More than 600 artists drew murals on concrete areas in and around the shopping mall. A free event on Father’s Day weekend, this annual festival always attracts many families. Light Bringer Project president Tom Coston said the festival idea originated in 1993 when Nancy Siegmund, an intern for Light Bringer Project, saw chalk painting in Paris. It debuted that same year at Pasadena City Hall, and about 100 artists came. From then on, it only grew. In 2010, Guinness World Records declared it as the largest street painting festival. An exhibition at the Pasadena Museum of History will highlight the festival’s

Immoral Immigration Lawyers Filing Deceptive Political Asylum Applications by Steve Chiang

John Chia-Chang Lin, a former Chinese immigration lawyer, was sentenced in February by the Southern District Court of New York to four months’ imprisonment and one year probation after being released from jail for being involved in at least 500 fraudulent political asylum application cases. John ChiaChang Lin pled guilty in 2013 to the sole count of conspiracy to commit immigration fraud in violation of 18 USC §§ 371 and 1546(a), both felonies. He can no longer practice law in New York State. John Lin, another immigration lawyer, was arrested in 2012 when the federal government probed into suspicious fraudulent asylum applications and raided some immigration lawyers’ offices. According to the accusations, Mr. Lin was charged of helping Chinese citizens who hoped to immigrate to the United States file fraudulent applications, lying to immigration officers that they were persecuted in China. One of the many lies propagated by these men and other immigration lawyers was that a client practicing Falun Gong in China to improve his health was actually
“persecuted by the Chinese government … .” and subsequently sought political asylum. These deceitful lawyers’ intentions are to get a kind of “fast track” to citizenship, or at least a green card. The process has caused thousands of serious delays in the processing of genuine political asylum cases as well as legitimate naturalization cases, thereby clogging courts and delaying everyone’s right to a fair and timely process. What was once called a “melting pot” (seamless immigration into the new world) is now essentially at a boiling point where deceitful attorneys and desperate clients attempt to deceive a system that was intended to help those in the greatest need. In recent years, more and more Chinese have applied for political asylum based on the Falun Gong practice argument, most without merit. The applicants were consequently called Falun Gong Refugees. In one case, in order to help his clients to get “green cards,” John Lin intentionally collaborated with his clients, those fake refugees attempting to seek political asylum, by teaching them to practice
“Refugee Exercises and Falun Gong basics” and fabricating absurd statements for the immigration interviews, affecting more than 500 immigration applications. Attorneys like Lin are paid large sums of money for their “services,” which ultimately go nowhere when the deception is detected. To understand the legal ramifications we need knowledge of the legislation for political asylum which was enacted fifty years ago in the United States. Ever since then, seeking green cards through fraudulent asylum application was an open secret in the immigrants’ communities, especially in Chinese communities. Gradually, asylum applications formed a huge profit chain with its standardized application pattern. Some immigration lawyers provided all-in-one package service to their Chinese clients, from fabricating the asylum statement, fraudulent supporting documents, to ‘teaching’ clients how to lie at the final interview. Some interview interpreters were also involved to “assist” the applicants during
the immigration interviews, which is a highly suspect practice. How does a humanitarian act like political asylum become a wide legal loophole? Firstly, applicants, either stowaways or illegal immigrants with overstayed visas in the United States, have no other way to seek permanent residency than to file counterfeit applications. They don’t have the available funds to invest (EB5) and they don’t have special skills to apply for national interest waiver for the visa. Marriage to a U.S. citizen is the only option to many. This , of course, is a greatly abused practice. Secondly, seeking asylum for permanent residence is comparatively easier and faster than that of the naturalization process. Generally, applicants can be granted for asylum within two to three months after they file the applications and they can be granted permanent resident card after one year. Their spouse and children will also be granted permanent residence. False asylum applications are a serious shortcut for illegal immigrants and those “experienced” Chinese
attorneys. To this point, the law provides “rice” and professional lawyers play a role of “a housewife,” who prepares “a grand banquet” of fraudulent asylum applications for the “guests,” those new immigrants who want to seek legal status. The improvement of quantities and quality of fraudulent legal paperwork makes it more difficult to distinguish the truly needy asylum applications from the trickery of deceitful attorneys. Seeking permanent residence through fraudulent applications not only violates U.S. law, but also misleads the innocent new immigrants to this country. Some Chinese understand that deceitfulness violates the local law, but they still take risks of losing their green cards and being deported to their native country. Some are just too naïve to think that green cards can be obtained by paying more money. As a result, they are cheated by unscrupulous lawyers and they lose tens of thousands dollars. Many Chinese have an American Dream when they arrive here.
They hardly realize that only abiding by the local laws can they truly stand tall. According to court documents Lin was indeed a candidate for disbarment: “Here, respondent admitted during his plea allocution that, from 2006 to 2012, he knowingly conspired with others to submit immigration applications containing false information to gain benefits from the federal government. Respondent's submission of immigration documents containing false information to federal agencies corresponds to the New York felony of offering a false instrument for filing in the first degree (Penal Law § 175.35), and therefore is a proper predicate for automatic disbarment under Judiciary Law § 90(4)(b) and (e) (see Matter of Philwin, 108 AD3d 129 [1st Dept 2013];Matter of David, 102 AD3d 23 [1st Dept 2012]; Matter of Diaz, 98 AD3d 158 [1stDept 2012]).” A shortcut via unscrupulous attorneys might lead immigrants into a proverbial mine field that could lead them to jail, deportation, and financial ruin. The original dream has thus becomes a nightmare.

I moved to Sierra Madre on March 1, 1966 and rented an apartment from John Goddell. While helping my sister and brother-in-law, Tony and Ann Harris at Sierra Madre Hardware, I was introduced to Ross Tyree who was the Rose Float Association President at that time. When I mentioned to him that I had chaired the building of three floats while going to USC, he quickly stated that the Association needed me. So I joined and started attending meetings at Ross Tyree’s home. We had an average attendance of ten, plus or minus, and we mainly focused on fundraising during that time of the year. Our main fundraiser was operating the food booth at the Sierra Madre Art Fair. We set up our service counter on the east side of the Hart Park House, and used the kitchen inside. We were the only food booth and had to give ten percent of the gross receipts to the Friends of the Sierra Madre Library. Our leading item was Ann Harris’ taco recipe, which sold approximately
1,800 tacos over the twoday Art Fair. This was followed by sales of approximately 1,500 hot dogs and 1,200 hamburgers. Another major seller were fruit pies, homemade made by Rowena Wingate. She made about 30 to 50 pies for the weekend, which we sold by the piece or whole. After several years the Friends of the Library ordered us to stop selling tacos due to the smell in the air, which we thought was the reason why we sold so many. The Friends also allowed other food booths to sell products, so our sales dropped off so it wasn’t as good a fundraiser. We also sold artificial long-stem roses and rose lapel stick-ons for $1 each, which Tony Harris purchased wholesale at $ .05/ each. David Duran’s mother also purchased tortillas at Olvera Street for $ .08/dozen. We also sold donuts and coffee, popcorn, and soda pop of different flavors. We also tried out Rose Zapata’s recipe for bean burritos, but that didn’t sell too well.
We had plenty of help - both male and female - so customers did not have to wait very long. We also had other fundraisers, such as a dinner dance at which time the Rose Princesses were selected and we sold Parade Programs, pennants, t-shirts, sweatshirts, raffle tickets and any other items we could think of. During those years we spent the first half of the year paying for the float that was in the last New Year’s Parade, and the second half raising funds to pay for the next parade. It was a total volunteer effort and everyone was happy doing whatever they did. It all contributed to the goal of sending our float down the street for the Rose Parade. We knew in our hearts that we had to be in the parade every year or else our group would stop altogether. Bank of America”, holds that a homeowner can challenge his lender’s right to foreclose by showing that the Deed of Trust never made it into the securitized trust until after the trust’s closing date. Most ditches are designed to move water away from an area, so the bottom of the ditch is built on a modest slope, usually between 200:1 to 400:1. Swales, however, are flat on the bottom because they’re designed to do the opposite; they slow water down to a standstill, eliminate erosion, infiltrate the surrounding area with water and recharge the groundwater table. When water moves along the flat bottom of a swale, it fills it up like a bathtub — that is, all parts of the bath tub fill at the same rate. The water in a swale is therefore passive; it doesn’t flow the way it would on a slope. It is absolutely brilliant in its simplicity, but few have ventured as far a one Sierra Madre resident to do her part for the environment during California’s historic drought. Azusa Police Kill Burglary Suspect Azusa police and LASD Homicide were investigating a chain of events that ended with a man being fatally shot by Azusa police on Sunday afternoon, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. At approximately 1 p.m. officers from the Azusa Police Department responded to the 500 block of East Lee Drive after receiving a report that a person with unknown injuries was acting in a bizarre manner, a news release from the Sheriff’s Department stated. The caller indicated the person was trying to break into a house. Sheriff’s Lt. Holly Francisco later said dispatchers also received a 911 call from a relative of the man who
said he was “acting insane.” The man apparently lived in the home next door to the one he was trying to enter. When officers arrived, a neighbor informed them that they heard a female screaming inside the residence. The officers entered the home and located the man. At some point, they opened fire, hitting the man. The man — identified by sheriff’s officials as 24-year-old Adrian Simental, Azusa resident — was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. No officers were injured in the incident, which was being investigated by Azusa police and the Sheriff’s Department.

However, in a June 17 report George cautioned that “because the steady increase of costs cannot be managed with the slow recovery of current revenues,” budgetary belt-tightening may be necessary in the near future. “This budget includes close to $500,000 in cost increases that are outside of the Council’s control, such as CalPERS [pension] rate increases, Part Time sick leave benefits, and Sheriff’s contract increases,” George wrote. “Unfortunately, these are not one time increases and they will become part of our ongoing operational costs in future years. As a result, it is important to note that as much as revenues continue to increase at a moderate level, it may not be enough to balance the budget, because the items that are not in their control exceed our current revenue capacity.” Sales tax provided the largest revenue stream for Duarte’s general fund in ‘1415, generating $5.1 million and is projected to increase by more than $300,000 in the upcoming fiscal year, according to a June 17 report by George.
“The good news is we’re back up, the bad news is we’re back where we were in 2007,” Petersen said in reference to sales tax revenue. She echoed George’s call for focus on boosting revenue growth as the economy continues its slow recovery. Motor vehicle fees generate $1.9 million, up slightly from the current fiscal year’s estimates, and property taxes are expected to increase moderately to about $1.2 million. Public safety programs and services receive the general fund’s largest expenditure, totaling $4.5 million which is an increase of about $250,000 compared with ‘14-15. The city’s contract with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department contract is $3.1 million for the upcoming fiscal year, which represents approximately 19 percent of general fund expenses and will increase more than $100,000 from the current year’s total. State and federal grants as well as a contribution from the Duarte Unified School District cover $269,000 of the city’s public safety expenses. Budget documents show that “community development” and “administrative services” will cost about $2.7 million and $2.4 million respectively. Parks and recreation will receive nearly $1.9 million, an increase of more than $100,000 compared with ‘14-15. George’s report details one-time expenses for infrastructure and equip-
ment upgrades that include $50,000 for a traffic circulation study of peak hours on Huntington Drive; $30,000 to replace the lighting in the Civic Center parking lot with energy-efficient LED; $23,000 for a rubberized playground surface at Royal Oaks Park; and $10,000 apiece to update street signs, implement a watersaving landscape plan for street medians and initiate the city’s use of graffiti-resistant paint. Several new vehicles will join Duarte’s municipal fleet – a truck for the Field Services Division, a truck for Facilities Maintenance, a passenger van for the Parks and Recreation Department and a alternative-fuel vehicle for the city manager. Funding for the vehicle purchases calls for $116,000 from the general fund and $33,000 from the city’s AQMD fund. While the general fund covers most of the services that directly impact Duarte residents, the city has several other funds dedicated to specific types of expenditures. A notable expenditure in this realm includes a general fund subsidy of $326,000, up $26,000 from ‘14-15, to pay for a lessthan-optimal level of service in the Citywide Landscape and Lighting District, George reported. The increase was mainly due to rising electricity prices. Petersen and George also highlighted the need for refurbishing the Fitness Center pool to the tune of as much as $400,000, with $267,000 dependent on county approval.

Rep. Schiff Secures Additional $5 Million to Continue Building Earthquake Early Warning System Adam Schiff (D-Burbank) announced that the Appropriations Committee has once again included $5 million in funding in the Fiscal Year 2016 Interior and Environment Appropriations bill for a west coast earthquake early warning system. Last year, for the first time, Congress appropriated $5 million specifically for the system. This continued funding during a time of severe budget constraints demonstrates the importance of the system and Congress’s commitment to seeing the system fully built out. Earlier this year, Schiff led a group of 35 Members of Congress – primarily from California, Washington, and Oregon – to request that the committee fund an earthquake early warning system for the West Coast. A limited system developed by Caltech, UC-Berkeley, and the University of Washington, in conjunction with the United States Geological Survey (USGS), has already been deployed and has proven that the early warning technology is sound. It will cost an estimated $38.2
million to build out a full system for the west coast, with annual operating and maintenance costs of $16.1 million. “I am pleased that the House Appropriations Committee has once again provided vital early funding for the earthquake early warning system. It is absolutely critical that the West Coast implement an earthquake early warning system that will give us a heads up before the ‘big one’ hits, so we can save lives and protect infrastructure,” said Schiff. “We are constantly reminded of our vulnerability—with tremors, earthquakes and aftershocks rattling our homes and business— and even a few seconds of warning will allow people to seek cover, slow or stop trains, pause surgeries, and more. Mike Parisi Named New Baseball Coach at La Salle La Salle High School on June 19 announced that Michael Parisi has accepted the position of boys’ varsity baseball coach for the Lancers. La Salle’s Principal, Brother Christopher Brady, FSC, said, "Michael is a great addition to La Salle. He is a proven leader and a very successful coach in developing exceptional student-athletes.” Michael Parisi is leaving Pasadena High School, where he led the Bulldogs to seven CIF play-off appearances from 2009 to 2015 and finished the 2015 season at 17-11 placing third in the Pacific League. Mike was the Pacific League Coach of the Year in 2012 and coached a record 20win season with the Bulldogs in 2013. He had a 117-101 record during his eight-year tenure at Pasadena. Coach Parisi was also the Head Varsity Baseball Coach at Arcadia High School from 1999-2003 (87-21) leading the Apaches to Pacific League Championship titles four consecutive years. In 2000, he

UCLA Commit Octavius Spencer: Ready to Work
O
ctavius Spencer will be playing on a much bigger stage this fall as he moves from Monrovia High School Field to Rose Bowl Stadium. The 6’2’’, 175lb DB/WR officially announced his commitment to UCLA back on December 16th. Aside from UCLA, Spencer received offers from other PAC-12 competitors: Oregon, Washington and Cal. In an interview with Beacon Media, Spencer said he felt an immediate connection with UCLA’s campus, coaches, staff and players. He said, “I’m ready to make the most of this entire experience both on the field and in the classroom.” Spencer was always on the field in high school, playing offense, defense and special teams. When asked about how he expects his skill set to transition into college he replied, “I see myself doing the same thing I did in high school, playing both sides of the ball. At all times … my mentality both on and off the field is that of an alpha male.” However, if he had to choose just one position (a difficult question he gets asked all the time) he would “probably say receiver because I like having the ball in my hands and controlling the tempo of the game.” He made it clear that “honestly, I will do whatever it takes to make the team win. If I have to play kicker, punter, linebacker or anything else, I would do whatever it takes to help my team.” His speed is what separated him in college; however, Division 1 football in the PAC-12 is a whole other level of athleticism, speed, and strength. This is something Spencer understands and is already preparing for: “I already started preparing myself for this season: running hills, training, and weightlifting - just getting myself faster and stronger so I can be at my best for the upcoming season.” Talking about why he chose UCLA, Spencer said,
“It just came down to me and my family talking it out. The morning of my visit, the coaches there made me feel a part of the team already. So that in itself made me want to go to UCLA; along with the education and it being a prestigious school.” The recruitment process was enjoyable for Spencer. He talked about his relationship with the players, coaches and staff. “Me and Coach Mora have a very good relationship. Having that time to get to know Coach Mora and most of the other coaches just helped me feel a part of the team that much faster.” Being a part of something bigger than himself, regardless of the circumstances, comes from his family: “My whole drive comes from my family and what I’ve been through my whole life; they are what motivates me and drives me to be the best person and player I can be. When we lost our house this past year during football season, it was a hard time for us because we were going through the recruitment process while trying to figure out where I was going to stay the next day. So that was probably the biggest obstacle we faced together and are still facing today.” Spencer was just as excited about his educational success; he plans to study either Public Relations or Exercise Science. He said, “The plan would be to make it to the NFL but the main goal is to get the degree from UCLA and further my education. So if football doesn’t work out, I have that degree in either public relations or exercise science and I can make it work from there.” The UCLA Bruins play at the historic Rose Bowl in Pasadena. Spencer spoke about stepping onto that field for the first time and stated, “Honestly, it feels amazing to be a part of such a historic and prestigious program. All I can say is that I cannot wait to play for my state and the University of California Los Angeles. I’m
just really excited. I can already imagine it right now. It’s going to be an unexplainable feeling and I’ll be lost for words. Honestly, I don’t know. I’m speechless right now just talking about it.” Ocatvius Spencer is much more than just a great football player. He appears to understand that playing at the next level is a privilege and one that he does not take lightly. When asked what aspect of college he is looking most forward to, he stated, “I’m most looking forward to getting to know the rest of the team, staff, and coaches. Getting to know the campus better, furthering my education, and just having fun and enjoying college. They say these are supposed to be the best years of your life.”

Temple City Unified School District by MAY S. RUIZ Temple City, a mere four miles square, may be small in area but it lives large in the eyes of its proud residents. Known as the City of Camellias, it is home to a number of independent businesses, and has become a destination for Asian, Eastern European, and Latino immigrants looking to start new lives. Its Unified School District was created in 1954 and has since established itself as “A District of Distinguished Schools.” The California Department of Education has consistently named all the city’s public educational institutions in the top five percent of the state’s schools. In 1957, the first 12th grade class in the district graduated from Temple City High School when its Associated Student Body adopted green and gold as its colors and the Ram its mascot. An academically highachieving school, Temple City High offers 20 Advanced Placement classes in Biology, Chemistry, Psychology, Physics, Environmental Science, Calculus AB and BC, Statistics, Micro Economics, US History, US Government and Politics, World History, Language and Composition, Literature and Composition, Art History, Studio Art, Chinese, French, German, and Spanish. Students have nine Honors classes to choose from: Algebra 2; Geometry; Pre-Calculus; Biology; Chemistry; English 1 and 2; Advanced Painting; and Orchestra. In 2014, 522 juniors and seniors took the AP exams, 84.3% of whom scored above a 3, a full 20% more than California’s total.

Mary Jo Fosselman King, TCHS Principal, is extremely proud of the school’s student body. About 80 percent of Temple City High students are engaged in various activities outside of academics. A staggering number of clubs on campus – 68 of them, ranging from the American Cancer Society to Folding Papers for Life to World Wildlife Fund – compete for students’ attention and time. There are academic groups, organizations, performing arts clubs, athletic teams and school publications. There is also a Peer Listener Program and direct student involvement in the city through a 100hour Community Service graduation requirement. This past year TCHS reached the state level in the Science Olympiad competition and participated in the JPL CAD (ComputerAided Design) Challenge.

Temple City High School’s 40 athletic teams compete interscholastically in the Rio Hondo League in boys’ and girls’ basketball, cross country, soccer, swimming, tennis, track and field, volleyball, water polo, boys’ baseball, basketball, football, golf and softball. Likewise notable are the high school’s achievements in the arts. Its Marching Band and Pageantry Corps has participated twice in the Tournament of Roses Parade, which led to an appearance and performance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. The high school’s symphony orchestra has been invited to take part in the Youth Symphony Orchestra Competition in Carnegie Hall and was awarded the Gold Plaque Award for their performance. Hall in recognition of their cello player, Daniel Gee, for his arrangement of George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue.” Temple City High School has in place an aggressive program to ensure that its students’ accomplishments lead them to a bright future. The 82 teachers and team of six counselors are tasked with shepherding all 2,100 students from 9th to 12th grade to succeed during their years at the high school and then guiding them to admission to the college or university that is the right fit for them. According to Martinne Gonzalez, one of the six full-time counselors, and Amy Sisson, ROP/TCE Technician, their College and Career Planning begins as soon as students step into the campus as freshmen, as they are introduced to the College Admissions process. sophomore year, students learn to identify their interests and write their creative resumes. When they reach their third year, juniors begin their college search. A Junior Parents’ Night is held in the spring to get parents acquainted with the process their children are going through. Counselors explain how students and parents can utilize Naviance (college and career readiness software provider) in helping them create their schools list, assess their strengths, evaluate their interests and choose their activities in relation to their college choice. Another Parents’ Night is held in the fall of senior year to connect summer planning and research to the application process that will be in full swing. Seniors are encouraged to attend information sessions and speak to the college representatives who will also be the college admissions officers reading their applications and essays. “PawFection” is a dog grooming daycare and overnight facility dedicated to providing pet parents with the peace of mind of knowing their pet is in good care. Dog lover Megan Hyman established the doggie daycare, which is conveniently located off the 210 Freeway in Pasadena, in 2013. Hyman’s love for dogs has been a part of her life since childhood. Growing up, the owner would often rescue dogs alongside her mother who was also very fond of the furry friends. Together, the two shared the dream of one day opening a facility for dogs. After Hyman’s mother passed away in 2010, she did everything in her power to pursue that dream in memory of her mother, and, in April 2013, she opened PawFection. With more than ten years of professional dog grooming experience, the certified dog trainer has proven able to tend to all of her customers’ dog grooming needs. One of PawFection’s core values lies in its dedication to building a relationship with every dog’s owner. “We really try to get to know the pet parents, which is really nice because everyone becomes like family,” said Hyman. Another core value of the company is to keep it simple. For example, rather than TVs and luxury spas, the doggie daycare fills its vast amount of space with practical dog beds, mats, and toys. One of the major challenges comes when pet parents vaguely express a specific cut they want replicating a previous cut from a different salon. Being that same hair cut terms differ among grooming salons, it can be difficult to replicate a previous cut from another salon. “Many dog owners bring in their dog expecting to get the exact same cut they got somewhere else without explaining in
