El Monte Citizens Angered at Possible Resignation of Art Barrios
El Monte Treasurer Jerry Velasco Announces Campaign for City Council BY STAFF WRITER
BY NICK KIPLEY
On Tuesday Night, citizens packed El Monte City Hall to yell at the Mayor during the Public Comment Section of a regular meeting of the City Council. The item about which they were so enraged was 14.5 of the Regular Agenda. 14.5 concerned itself with the, “Consideration of Appointment to the Planning Commission. It is recommended that the City Council approve the replacement of Planning Commissioner Art Barrios with the appointment of Alfredo
Nuno.” According to the section on appointing Commissioners in the El Monte City Charter, “Section 2.24.030 – Membership,” it is indicated that Commissioners serve at the pleasure of the council and that any member of council may, at any time, request the resignation of any Commissioner he or she appointed and have that Commissioner replaced by an alternative nominee. And since no reason has to be given, item 14.5 enraged several citizens who

showed up just to express their anger. One of the first people to speak during public comment was an incredibly angry man who shouted for a full thirty seconds at the Mayor, “You’re siding with the enemy of America! Everybody knows Art is a good man!” He shouted, “Look what we got for a mayor! Mayor Benedict Arnold! You people happy with a mayor like this? Art shouldn’t have to resign! You should resign SEE PG. 16
City Treasurer Jerry Velasco has announced his candidacy for El Monte City Council. The upcoming election for two open council seats will be held on Nov. 3, 2015. "El Monte residents deserve a city government that is accessible, transparent, and responsive," said Velasco. "I'm running for City Council to institute common sense reforms that will help grow our economy, maintain neighborhood safety, protect our most vulnerable citizens, and im-
prove the delivery of frontline city services. Serving as City Treasurer the last two years has been a great honor and I am proud of the work we have done to responsibly manage our city's finances. But I believe I can make a greater impact as a City Council Member, and I feel that my experiences, as City Treasurer, a planning commissioner, and a business owner, make me uniquely qualified to help lead El Monte forward."
