Congressman Adam Schiff Joins New Coalition of Cities, Launch “Beyond the 710,” New Plan to Replace SR-710

The Connected Cities and Communities, comprised of five San Gabriel Valley cities and community allies joined Congressman Adam Schiff (D-Burbank) Thursday morning to announce “Beyond the 710: Moving Forward,” a new plan to replace the long debate over the proposed 710 Tunnel with a set of

forward-thinking mobility and smart growth proposals that will better connect people to important destinations and relieve congestion throughout the San Gabriel Valley, while ending the debate over a tunnel proposal that has generated widespread and passionate opposition.

Shriners Hospitals for Children Breaks Ground

Patient ambassadors of Shriners Hospitals for Children led a groundbreaking ceremony on a new, $77 million, state-of-the-art medical center scheduled to open in mid-2017. For over 60 years, Shriners Hospitals for Children – Los Angeles has transformed the lives of thousands of children in Southern California and across the Southwest. The new location will allow Shriners to better serve the pediatric specialty care needs of Pasadena, the greater San

Gabriel Valley, and across the Southwest for years to come.

The project will include demolition of two one-story exist-

ing structures and approximately 75,000 square feet of

new construction, including three levels of subterranean parking with 250 stalls and green roof terraces. Shriners Hospitals for Children® – Los Angeles is a specialty hospital for orthopaedic conditions, prosthetics and orthotics, hand disorders, burn scars, and cleft lip and palate. Shriners Hospitals for Children provide world-class care to children under 18 regardless of the families’ ability to pay. The Shriners Hospital new location will be located at 909 S. Fair Oaks Avenue.

Glendale LowIncome Home Ownership Project Approved The Glendale Housing Authority approved the appropriation of $1.4 million in federal HOME funds to support the development of a six-unit affordable home ownership development in partnership with San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity. The project will be built on 634 and 700 E. Lomita Ave. and will give priority to low-income, first-time homebuyer households that live and/or work in Glendale. The estimated cost of the entire project is $2.8 million. The housing authority will provide $1.4 million, which will include the land purchase of $980,000. The project will consist of six attached townhousestyle, 1,300-square-foot condominiums. Each unit will have three bedrooms, 1.5 bathrooms and an attached two-car garage. Each unit will be sold to qualified low-income first-time homebuyers for an estimated total value of $425,444. Approximately $194,000 will be a monthly mortgage payable to Habitat at 0 percent interest. The balance will consist of deferred nonpayment loans on the units that will help ensure long-time affordability to all future buyers. Additionally, each selected family must complete 500 hours of “sweat equity” by working on the project. The Glendale Housing Authority is committed to
