Sierra Madre Resident Takes Drought Seriously; Landscaping features a 52-foot swale OK, I know what you’re about to ask. What on earth is a ‘Swale’? Simply put, swales are water-harvesting ditches, built on the contour of a landscape. Most ditches are designed to move water away from an area, so the bottom of the ditch is built on a modest slope, usually between 200:1 to 400:1. Swales, however, are flat on the bottom because they’re designed to do the opposite; they slow water down to a standstill, elimiSEE PG. 14

Community to Create New Art Mural in One Weekend Temple City’s Public Arts Commission is looking for volunteers to paint a new mural at Temple City Library. Scheduled for June 27-28, the event will allow residents to paint itself into history by creating the mural in one weekend. “This event is not only about art and beautifying our city, it’s also about teamwork,” said Mayor Tom Chavez. “By collaborating on this mural, Temple Citians can build strong community ties and foster new friendships.” Designed by renowned artist Art Mortimer, the mural concept depicts elements of Temple City’s past

and present in a parade down Las Tunas Drive. The 8’ x 28’ artwork will take the place of the library’s existing mural, which is to be moved to Temple City Unified School District headquarters. Mortimer has painted nearly 100 murals, including major public artworks in Long Beach, Los Angeles, Santa Monica and New York City. Considered one of the originators of the mural movement in Los Angeles, his work has been featured in numerous exhibitions and publications worldwide. The mural will be designed in a paint-by-num-

bers format that will make the weekend easy and fun. Community members of all ages and artistic abilities are invited to participate. Volunteers are only required to provide a positive attitude and a willingness to get involved. Due to limited space, interested participants must register for the event ahead of time. They must also sign a safety waiver and attend an event workshop tentatively scheduled for June 25. For more information and to register, contact Giselle Corella at (626) 6567314 or gcorella@templecity.us.
