“Heroes in the Shadows”
Five Day Veterans Job Fair Honors the Fallen and Provides Services for the Living With the close of Memorial Day events, one continues with a weeklong event dedicated to honoring the fallen while serving the living. Presented by The Vet Hunters Project, in conjunction with the City of Pomona, the fourth annual “Heroes in the Shadows” San Gabriel Valley Homeless Stand Down kicked off yesterday with more than 400 attendees. The five day event runs through Friday May 29 at the Pomona National Guard Armory located at 600 South Park Avenue in Pomona. On Wednesday, May 27, the event featured a veteran job fair presented by the Employment Development Department. In the morning, seven cars were donated to deserving veterans in need, marking the most amount of vehicles donated by the Vet Hunters in a single day. The Vet Hunters ProSEE PG. 18

Twin Lakes School Families, Staff Attend Local Ag Fair
Students, families and staff from Twin Lakes Elementary School took part in an educational fair focused on agricultural and nutrition on May 16 at the Pomona Fairplex. The event, called the Schools’ Agriculture and Nutrition Fair and sponsored by the 48th District Agricultural Association, drew 50 attendees from Twin Lakes including teacher Rossana Gonzalez and Principal Helen Heller. “Know Soil, Know Life” was the theme of this year’s fair, which featured thousands of individual and classroom entries from hundreds of schools in the Los SEE PG. 16
Kids, Adults Get Thousands of Free Books at Annual Event

The City Council voted 3-2 to accept Godinez’s resignation and appoint Assistant City Manager Jesus Gomez to El Monte’s top executive post. Literacy, story-telling, crafts, fun and games was the order of the day at the annual Fiesta of Books on May 2 at the El Monte Community Center. Children with a passion for books and love for reading eagerly lined up for the event coordinated by the El Monte Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department, El Monte Police Department, El Monte City School District and the Mountain View School District.
