City’s First Bike Lane to Open April 25

BY NICK KIPLEY Earlier this month, an 82-year-old man was riding his bike on Garvey Street when he was struck by an SUV travelling eastbound. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was transported from the scene to the U.S.C. County Hospital where he was died of his injuries some three days later. The man was struck not because the driver of the SUV was under the influence of any drugs or alcohol, but because (as stated in an El Monte PD press release), “it is believed that the male subject … rode across traffic lanes in the dark when he was struck.” Confirmed by Officer Ryan Abbot, who was with the City’s motorcycle unit that night and arrived on the scene just minutes after it happened, the tragic event was a result of human error. An accident.
“Personally speaking,” he said, “I’d estimate that one out of every five or so of [the] traffic collisions [I deal with] involve a cyclist or pedestrian.” Officer Abbott doesn’t know if this figure translates
