Off-Duty Pasadena Firefighter Saves Long Beach Doctor’s Life By Terry Miller

‘Ava’s Heart’ Stresses the Magnitude of Life-Saving Organ Transplants

Ava Kaufman was healthy, vibrant and full of life one day; the next, she was going to die unless she received a new heart.

Now a successful heart transplant recipient and leading transplant advocate, Ava is the founder of Ava’s Heart, the only nonprofit in the United States that provides extensive support for transplant patients and their families pre-and-post life-saving organ transplants.

Dr. Allen Warner asked media at Pasadena Fire Station 32 Saturday afternoon, “How do you possibly thank someone for saving your life …?” With tears in his bright blue eyes, the Long Beach doctor was moments away from meeting the very man who saved his life in Febru-

ary.

The Long Beach doctor, who specializes in Nephrology (study of kidneys), was given CPR February 26 after suffering a cardiac arrest while working out at a Long Beach Gym. A former Washington Redskins football player,

now a Pasadena paramedic/ firefighter, just happened to be working out at the same gym when he saw Dr. Warner collapse. What happened next is that a sea of people started to try to help Dr. Warner but paramedic Manuel White knew exactly what to do:

“My training automatically kicked in … it was like an out-of-body experience … I took charge of the situation and told the others assisting that I was a paramedic/firefighter.” White took over, giving

Most recently, Ava had the honor of representing Donate Life and Ava’s Heart at a Glendale city council meeting during which Mayor Zareh Sinanyan proclaimed April to be 'DMV/Donate Life California Month.' While there, Ava shared some details of Please see page 3

Nurses Just Say No to CNA Unionization of Huntington Memorial Hospital

CEO Steve Ralph sent out the following memo e mail last night: “The National Labor Relations Board tonight counted the ballots in the election to determine whether CNA/NNU would become the certified bargaining representative for Huntington Hospital nurses. Unfortunately, we do not have a final result to share with you this evening. The vote count was: •Votes cast against CNA/NNU representation (“No” votes): 539 •Votes cast for CNA/ NNU representation (“Yes” votes): 445 •Challenged ballots: 175 Because of the number of challenged ballots, the result cannot be determined without resolving the challenged ballots.

What happens now? The NLRB will make a determination on the challenged ballots. In this process, the side that challenged the ballot has to provide a legitimate legal reason for the challenge. Once the NLRB decides which challenged nurses are eligible to vote, those

ballots are opened, separated from the envelopes and counted as a group by the NLRB. The hospital also is assessing additional steps. Both sides have one week to file objections to the election. The hospital will object to any conduct by CNA/ NNU leading up to and dur-

ing the election that was illegal, or intended to intimidate or harass voters. When will we get a result? Until the NLRB investigates and rules on the challenges and objections, if any, the election results will not be official. We cannot say exactly how long this will take. We are just as eager as you are to see it resolved. I will let you know as soon as decisions are made. What should we do in the meantime? In the meantime, I would ask that we all conduct ourselves according to our values of respect, integrity and excellence. Our focus and commitment should be, as always, on providing safe, high quality care for our patients and support for each other. Thank you. -Steve”

Rep. Adam Schiff (DCA), the lead sponsor of the Armenian Genocide Truth and Justice Resolution in Congress, released the following statement after the White House confirmed to Armenian-American community leaders that the President would not use the word genocide when he issues a statement Friday on the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide:

“I’m deeply disappointed that the President, once again, will fail to properly describe the extermination of 1.5 million Armenians from 1915 to 1923 for what it was – genocide. How long must the victim's and their families wait before our nation has the courage to con-

front Turkey with the truth about the murderous past of the Ottoman Empire? If not this President, who spoke so eloquently and passionately about recognition in the past, whom? If not after one hundred years, when? “The United States has long prided itself for being a beacon of human rights, for speaking out against atrocity, for confronting painful chapters of its own past and that of others. This cannot be squared with a policy of complicity in genocide denial by the President or Congress. Last week, the Pope spoke powerfully of the need to bind the wound that continues to bleed in the absence of recognition – I only wish Washington had been listening.”

Loopholes: A Hodgepodge of Puns, Shticks, and One-Liners By nathaniel cayanan Tax season-the time of year when Americans collectively shake their fist in the air, cursing the greedy, bureaucratic powersthat-be at the Internal Revenue Service. For most, this time is but a temporary one of irritation, much like the hiccups or dinner with the in-laws, but for a few, tax season lasts for years. Such was the case for Stan Rich, playwright and lyricist for the new musical Loopholes: A Pain in the IRS, which premiered this past Tax Day in Hollywood. This musical parody, which follows Rich’s real-life 15-year legal battle with the IRS, pokes fun at the easily vilified government agency, while utilizing self-referential humor and shtick. Unfortunately, however, because of the writing’s lack of finesse and overreliance on certain gags, this production places incredible weight on a cast already given weak material. The musical tells the story of Izzy Rich (pun painfully intended), who falls victim to a narrow interpretation of tax law which forces him to owe the IRS more than he’s worth. With awkward song and dance, Izzy goes through a long legal battle while balancing a romantic life (or lack thereof) and fighting off a nervous breakdown. Sadly, with little for the audience to really grasp onto lastingly, the production loses its novelty ten minutes in. This is perhaps because Rich (the writer, not the character) seems so self-satisfied with his own cleverness. But, his jargonfilled punch lines and overabundance of puns (along with a joke suspiciously similar to that from the television show “Arrested Development”) come at the sacrifice of character development and organic plot progression. And while there are attempts to offer some substance via subplots featuring an am-

bivalent IRS agent and lovestruck psychiatrist, such attempts feel contrived even meaningless by the end. This certainly is a shame since the cast exhibits obvious talent deserving of more than the material presented to them. One can even say that, with dogged determination and individual charm, the cast salvages the entire show. This is especially true with Perry Lambert’s hilarious, Jon Lovitz-esque performance as a lovable CPA, Caryn Richman’s adorable “Dr. Marsha Mellow” and Camille Licate’s underutilized but delightful IRS agent, whose story sadly fades away by the end of the show. Now, this is not to say that no one can enjoy this musical. In spite of its shortcomings, it is energetic, at times funny, cleverly choreographed (as long as you know that they’re trying to be awkward), and bolstered by a dedicated cast. But don’t be surprised if at some point, you find yourself listening to the ten thousandth one-liner about how the IRS is evil and want to stand, shake your fist and shout, “We get it already!” Loopholes: A Pain in the IRS will play through May 17th. Performances will be Friday and Saturday, 8 p.m. and Sunday 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., at The Hudson Mainstage Theatre, 6539 Santa Monica Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90038. Tickets are $30 for General Admission and can be purchased by phone, (323) 960-7735, or online at: www.loopholestemusical.com.

how it happened to her – and how it can happen to anyone. “Every 10 minutes another person’s name is added to the national organ donor transplant list. At any moment, you or someone you love can be in need of a life-saving organ,” said Ava who is committed to turning her four-year-old Los Angeles based non-profit into the go-to organization for transplant patients. “The concept of transplant is foreign to most people. And when recognized, people tend to think of transplant as something for old people, but there are alarming numbers of babies and children in need of organ transplants.” In fact, a significant percentage of who Ava’s Heart helps are babies and children. Giving candidates, recipients and their families support and care from the beginning to the end of their transplant journey, Ava’s Heart assists with everything non-medical including financing and facilitation of temporary, but mandatory, housing pre and post transplant near the transplant center, ensuring recipients have the means to afford their medication, groceries and gas to travel to and from doctor’s appointments, dental assistance, hearing aids, baby strollers, car

seats and more as well as a hearty dose of invaluable emotional support, guidance, understanding and compassion. Through its partnership with Change A Life Foundation, Ava’s Heart granted families $110,000.00 in 2014 and has already helped eight families this year. “There are an overwhelming number of people who find themselves in need of an organ transplant and die because they are not able to find available resources. It’s heartbreaking,” continued Ava who was fortunate to receive the heart of a 17-year-old boy. “While we are blessed to be able to help those we can, there are countless more people that Ava’s Heart is not able to assist due to lack of funding. I know what a gift it is to be given a second chance at life and accept the responsibility that comes with it. Ava’s Heart was born from my determination to live for my daughter and commitment to ease some of the burden of others facing similar situations in the little known world of transplant recipients. The more funding we receive, the more lives we will be able to help save.” More information can be found at www.AvasHeart.org.

CPR while a gym instructor ran to get a portable defibrillator. That’s when they got a pulse back. At the meeting Saturday, Dr. Warner joked with Manny White by asking him if he did mouth to mouth as part of the CPR that day at the gym. White replied in the affirmative and Dr. Warner quipped, “Oh my, I’ve been kissed by a man ….” The two men laughed and hugged one another. Warner received a pacemaker and defibrillator to prevent another cardiac event. The Long Beach physi-

cian searched weeks for the name of the man who saved his life and with the help of his sister, was finally able to meet Pasadena firefighter Manuel White on April 19 for saving his life – the two now are “bonded for life …” as Dr. Warner said. Pasadena Fire Chief Bertral Washington noted that 300,000 people experience sudden cardiac arrest every year. Many appear healthy with no known heart disease. “Sadly, only 32 percent of cardiac arrest victims get CPR from a bystander,” Washington said. Washing-

ton stressed the importance of learning CPR, especially those close to you as most incidents occur in the home, statistically. The Pasadena Fire Department will soon offer sidewalk CPR classes. Firefighter/Paramedic Manuel White is a sevenyear veteran of the Pasadena Fire Department, who is married to his wife of nine years Maria and is a father of two boys: Isaiah (5) and Evan (2). The firefighters at station 32 provided a firehouse meal of tacos for Dr. Warner and his wife, Cathy.

Huff Talks Political Origins, Priorities If Elected Supervisor By joe taglieri in addition to a number of committees devoted to real estate, transportation and economic development. tor's wife of 15 years, has taken an active role in her husband's political career and currently is managing his board-of-supervisors campaign. Originally from Taipei and a well-connected business consultant with an accounting background, she noted the senator's natural inclination for helping others. As an example she harkened back to his childhood, when cancer caused a close friend to lose his eyesight. "Bob was his eyes. ... He took his friend to and from school every day," she said. "From an early age he was very helpful to other people. ... He volunteered most of his time to his church and he helped his friends, so that's the type of person he is." Huff first called the Imperial Valley home, where he was born in the border town of Calexico on Sept. 9, 1953, and spent his early years on the family's farm in nearby El

tended community college for two years and graduated from Westmont College in Santa Barbara, class of 1975, with a bachelor's degree in psychology. After taking an introductory psych course at Imperial Valley College, Huff discovered he liked that field of study: "I said, 'oh, maybe there's something here.' I became a psychology major because that would allow you to be a teacher or a psychologist." Eventually, however, the future legislator gravitated back to his agricultural roots. "Between my junior and senior years in college I had a job at a grain elevator in Imperial," Huff said. "When I left there they said 'when you get your degree if you decide you don't want to be a teacher or a psychologist,' which were the two avenues that a psychology degree would open for me, 'come back here, you've al-

ways got a job.' So ... I'm starting to think a job in the hand is worth two in the bush, so long story short I went there, they hired me [and] I worked my way up to be vice president of operations." In 1983 Huff and his family — which currently consists of four children and six grandchildren — relocated to Diamond Bar. There he bought the Ray S. French Co., a small commodity wholesaler, which he managed until winning a state Assembly seat in 2004. Now with his electoral sites set on a board seat, Huff summed up his county-level policy priorities as centering on reducing traffic congestion, lifting obstacles to job creation and addressing public safety concerns. "Part of removing obstacles is you have to have good transportation [and] good water infrastructure," said Huff, who last year was a lead negotiator for the statewide water bond to build two new water storage facilities and clean up contaminated drinking water in the San Gabriel Valley's underground aquifer. "Certainly affordable electricity rates, renewable energy comes in there, it's a great thing to have but it becomes very expensive," he added, in addition to noting the importance of "making sure that our regulations aren't keeping jobs away. All of those things tie into jobs." Huff and a number of politicians statewide have lamented the recent increase in property crime in many cities that they connect with recent legislation aimed at relieving prison overcrowding by reducing sentences for nonviolent offenders. He suggested the following: "Make sure we have enough probation officers to keep an eye on the felons we have let out; make sure we have good metrics in place to accurately assess our growing problems caused by the state's AB109 and also Prop. 47; do the best job we can with training programs to strike at the root of the issues that lead to incarceration; secure more funding from the state for the problems they have shifted to us; build a new jail; and frankly, continue as I have in the legislature to support and reform our educational system so we have fewer dropouts and more graduates who are job- or college-ready — a less than adequate educational system is the root of much of our crime problems." With the departures of term-limited Republicans Antonovich and 4th District Supervisor Don Knabe, a successful run could place Huff as the GOP's lone board

member. "I grew up with a Democrat father and Republican mother. I was the youngest of six kids, so I've always been in the minority you might say," Huff observed. "My reputation in Sacramento has been one of working across party lines to get things done. For the nine years I was on city council and working on SGV COG, Foothill Transit and chair of the ACE project, the

regional governance was all Democrat majority. But we got significant things done. While I have gotten things done in a partisan environment, my track record is one of more results in nonpartisan office. That is the experience I will bring to a Democrat-dominated board." The board of supervisors primary and general elections are in June and November 2016.

The term-limited Republican said he never lost touch with the local communities he has represented throughout the San Gabriel Valley and hopes that steadfast local focus will bode well for his run to succeed 5th District incumbent Michael Antonovich, who also due to term limits must abdicate the office he's held since 1980. "I've always tried to stay close to the people to reflect their concerns because we have too many people in government who are in there for their own purposes," Huff said. "If you go back to my original supporters and talk to them, I think you would find that they still hold me in high regard and delivered on the promises that I made even back when I was running for city government." Huff, who is Republican minority leader in the state's Democratic majority senate and earlier this month announced his bid for supervisor, was referring to the Diamond Bar residents who compelled him to enter public life. In 1990 he took the lead representing his church in securing approval for building a new facility. That experience proved to be a turning point toward what would become an extensive career in politics. "I had to go to city hall to extend a conditional-use permit to build a facility that they had gotten approval from the county before [Diamond Bar] incorporated," Huff said. "The city had different priorities than the county did. They wanted a tax-generating entity there rather than a church, so I kind of led that battle and became very frustrated with city government, basically, and that led me into speaking out on more issues." Huff's increasing public presence led to appointments to local advisory panels and an eventual tenure on the Diamond Bar City Council. "I was drafted into the city plan advisory committee, then appointed to the planning commission," he recalled. "I developed a reputation of speaking what I thought at that point, listening to people, being thoughtful, and I had a group of them that drafted me to run for city council. I told them they were crazy and a lot of other things, but eventually they prevailed. I ran, I won and I found I had an affinity for it." Huff served as a Diamond Bar council member and mayor from 1995-2004
