by Rachel Melikian World Powers: How bloodthirsty is the Devil for death as he caused the perpetrators of the Armenian Genocide to use death as their bloody pawn? Our nation’s darling little angel, Grandma of Armenia, pierced the heavens with cupids bow in prayer to protect us with love. Her pleading prayers to the heavens asked for mercy over the enemy’s soul. We are here now and we can utter words of justice to you. We will call on justice for it is far, far away. We speak truth of the 1915 Armenian Genocide to you. In your honorable power, we appeal, we are the survivors. Our martyrs are waiting for your verdict. We ask for your response. Between Alligator Purses and Jaguar Claws - A Day in the Life of a Wildlife Inspector at LAX By Jennifer Schlueter When Alli Goldman, wildlife inspector at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), led me into her office’s property room, I was flabbergasted by what I saw: stuffed lions, sea turtles, alligators, pangolins, birds, a tiger, a polar bear carpet and an alligator purse with the heads still on, jaguar claws, intricate ivory carvings, granulated tiger bones,

snake skin, cheetah coats, and so much more. The most disturbing piece of this collection was an elephant foot which served as a chair and had a zebra cover. All these goods were seized during inspections of imports and exports of international air and ocean cargo; for example, passenger baggage or mail shipments. Travelers – hunters,

tourists, and natives alike - either did not possess a permit for them, tried to smuggle them, or simply were oblivious to the fact that their souvenirs or medicinal products stem from protected animals. Goldman’s job is to catch these illegal imports, issue fines, inspect incoming wildlife shipments, and, most importantly, guard the endan-

gered species of our planet. When she discovered her first African trophy shipment, a full elephant skull, Alli broke out in tears. Soon, she came to realize that this would be the unfortunate nature of her job, with which she still struggles at times. On much better days, Alli gets to inspect live shipments of animals such as red pandas, tigers, penguins, and monkeys, one of which is The Hangover movie series’ “actor” Crystal. Seized live animals are removed from commercial activity and donated to public institutions such as zoos, aquariums, or exhibits. Because about 80% of live corals for the US enter through LAX, Alli inspects a lot of coral shipments on a regular day. Live birds and Please see page 3

obilizing state resources to face another year of extreme dry conditions, Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. last week joined Senate President pro Tempore Kevin de León, Assembly Speaker Toni Atkins, and Republican Leaders Senator Bob Huff and Assemblymember Kristin Olsen to announce legislation to help local communities cope with the ongoing, devastating drought. The $1 billion package will expedite bond funding to make the state more resilient to the disastrous effects of climate change and help ensure that all Californians have access to local water supplies. “This unprecedented drought continues with no signs yet of letting up,” said Governor Brown. “The programs funded by the actions announced today will provide direct relief to workers and communities most impacted by these historic dry conditions.” The legislation includes

more than $1 billion for local drought relief and infrastructure projects to make the state’s water infrastructure more resilient to extreme weather events. The package accelerates $128 million in expenditures from the Governor’s budget to provide direct assistance to workers and communities impacted by drought and to implement the Water Action Plan. It also includes $272 million in Proposition 1 Water Bond funding for safe drinking water and water recycling and accelerates $660 million from the Proposition 1E for flood protection in urban and rural areas. “Taken together, this package provides a major boost to our state’s efforts to manage the drought and strengthen our infrastructure,” said pro Tempore De León. “I want to thank the Governor and the Speaker for working together to respond to this Please see page 6

Death Investigation in Diamond Bar Los Angeles County Sheriff's Homicide detectives are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of a female adult that occurred on Wednesday, March 25, 2015, in the 1200 block of North Diamond Bar Boulevard, Diamond Bar. Detectives have learned that in the early morning hours, approximately 1:05 a.m., the Los Angeles County Fire Department (LACoFD) received a “structure fire” call at the victim’s residence. LACoFD personnel responded and extinguished the fire. After a preliminary search of the residence by LACoFD, the cause and origin of the fire could not be determined. Also, there were no victims located in the residence.

Based on this preliminary report, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Arson/Explosives Detail later responded to the residence to investigate the circumstances surrounding the structure fire. During the investigation, investigators received information that the resident of the location, a female adult, was possibly killed by another female, who may have also started the fire. The person suspected of committing these acts was also believed to be driving to the Tustin area. Tustin Police Department personnel was notified of the incident and subsequently located the female driving in the area. They detained the suspect at the intersection of Tustin

Ranch Road and Greenway Drive, Tustin, before transporting her to the Tustin Police Department for questioning. It is believed that the victim may possibly be inside the vehicle. There is no additional information available at this time. Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500. reptiles, and wildlife products such as exotic leathers are commonly examined as well, followed by rarer live shipments of tigers, monkeys, leopards, and other rare creatures. While still attending university and without any idea about the job of a wildlife inspector, Alli went to a presentation about government jobs and landed herself an interview. When she met with the former manager of the wildlife inspectors’

office, she was thrilled to hear that she could combine her sense of justice with her love for animals. For people who are interested in her job, she recommends they “get a four-year degree in a related field such as biology or criminal justice” and to secure an internship. Additionally, interested candidates should not only have a passion for animals, but also for constant learning, working in a team, and the environment.

When other people ask Alli about her job, they’re always “in awe,” she says. They love it, and so does she: “I love getting to learn about all of the different species and interact with rare animals that I might not even see in a zoo. It feels great at the end of the day to know that I am working hard to combat extinction and ensure that these amazing animals will be around for future generations.”

Glendale Resident Speaks to World Powers About Armenian Genocide Continued from page 1

2015, is a call for justice. We must revere the martyrs in vigilant silence until 2023 and beyond, For they have passed away, but not until they broke the murderous blade of bloodthirsty beasts, just as Grandma broke the murderous blade with cupid’s bow and prayer. The enemy has created a fanfare of lies, slapping the unconscious countries. Grandma’s large eyes are immune to the enemy’s lies. We need her eyes of justice to gain our justice and notify the world of the truth. We ask you to decree the crimes of the perpetrators away from this Centennial. We will rescue and reserve the date April 24, 2015 and silence before the martyrs. Your world life will be at ease when you rule your power to hear truth of our martyrs. Look how they died so our nation can give birth to civilization. Our martyrs can give birth to justice, Our unborn babies will bring you light. Our beauty blossoms birth. Have the big eye for truth, for the enemy has infested lies with the devils tongue: “The woman can attend the court hearing, but even if the wife of Jesus comes, she has not chance of success.” -Perincek, member of the Talat Pasha committee, told the Turkish press in regards to Amal Clooney’s involvement of the Armenian Genocide in the European Court. What kind of democracy is Turkey showing as they attempt to enforce other countries in denying the genocide. The more the enemy lies, the more they destroy. After the destruction, your minds are filled with doubt. The dark century is dead along with our martyrs’ voices. We have become a done deal, desperately seeking truth, locked in the catacomb. Turkey’s invitation to world leaders in attempt to overshadow our 100th Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, was planned as commemoration to the Battle

of Gallipoli. Their beastial eternal feast was planned to crown themselves in pride. I hoped, I dreamt, and I appealed for international leaders to say “NO” and they recently have. The Centennial is reserved until the end of the Vigil in 2023 or until justice is served. We reserve the Centennial on the calendar for our martyrs. We need to bury them with proper burial for they are the keeper of our nation. I sought to covert the enemy’s beastial feast into a memorial feast for the defenders of truth. Thus, we will honor the martyrs in their persistence for justice. World Powers, Come and defend our fate for it lies in your hands. It is searched throughout the world, so come to our rescue from the devil’s pawn. Cut Turkey’s thread of lies as we conclude the century with just verdict. Let us quench Komitas’ thirst with one droplet of water as he was deprived of water and arrested by the enemy, during the Armenian Genocide. Deliver our quest throughout the globe and call for our justice. The enemy throws the fishhook of lies into the world’s throat to choke them from spreading truth. We must pray together on our Centennial and remain in vigilant silence, to deliver the martyrs from the hands of the villain. Help me world powers, help me world diplomats, become ambassadors of truth to bring justice to our dishonored martyrs, world history, and nation. What would you like in return? I will give you more if you honorably let the world revere our martyrs, the victims of the Armenian Genocide 1915-1923. We must silence the world for it is our vigil. Let the enemy eat their beastly meal with the wolves, between the walls of blood, as they bow before our dead martyrs. The enemy will ask for mercy and

we have come with power to stop our bleeding wounds. They will crawl for repentance due to their desperation of our martyrs’ memorials and memories. Why haven’t our archives returned? We cannot appease Turkey’s appetite. Armenian eyes expose the truth for human conscience; the enemy’s lying eyes expose their lies for evil. The lying eyes peep through the graveless graves and desecrate the sacred memory of our martyrs per their bloody desire. They obtain a lying conscious to desecrate our Centennial as their empire expands. They conquer your courts of justice to stop truth and end our case. The way Turkey has solved the Armenian Question with Genocide, they are ready to solve the Question for our justice with more lies. You cannot collect the pieces of truth for it is raveled among demons. Ask us for the truth of our past for the enemy has banned certain countries from our recognition. Modern history books do not mention the Armenians. Many have never heard of our name, music, literature, and history for we were forgotten and buried in the sands. Until we arrived to the US, Americans were reminded of our history and they began talking of Armenians. Very few countries have recognized the Genocide over the last decade. However, recognition will not bring us justice. Let us retrace our steps 100 years back to the older years, to the times of cruelty and the search for redemption. Let us gather together the puzzle pieces of truth that you have yet to solve. April 24, 2015 is the 100th Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, let us come together in honor of our 1.5 million martyrs in vigilant silence to revere their sacred memory. Rachel Melikian is Former GCC Woman of the Year.

CDFW Scientists Publish Groundbreaking Work on Marijuana's Effect on the Environment

Environmental scientists with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) recently published a first-of-its-kind study that clearly shows that water used for growing marijuana has a devastating effect on fish in the state. The study showed that during drought conditions, water demand for marijuana cultivation exceeded stream flow in three of four study watersheds. The resulting paper, entitled "Impacts of Surface Water Diversions for Marijuana Cultivation on Aquatic Habitat in Four Northwestern California Watersheds," concludes that diminished stream flow from this water-intensive activity is likely to have lethal to sub-lethal effects on state and federally listed salmon and steelhead trout and will cause further decline of sensitive amphibian species. The study was published online in the scientific journal PLOS One and can be found here. By using online tools to count marijuana plants and measure greenhouses, and

conducting inspections of marijuana cultivation sites with state wildlife officers and local law enforcement, CDFW scientists quantified plant numbers and water use. Utilizing stream flow data provided by staff at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), CDFW determined water demand for cultivation could use more than 100 percent of stream flow during the summer dry season in three of four study watersheds. Stream flow monitoring conducted by CDFW in the summer of 2014 appeared to verify these results. "All the streams we monitored in watersheds with large scale marijuana cultivation went dry," said CDFW Senior Environmental Scientist Scott Bauer, lead author of the research paper. "The only stream we monitored that didn't go dry contained no observed marijuana cultivation." CDFW's Law Enforcement Division works closely with dozens of other state and federal agencies to eradicate illegal marijuana grows

on public, tribal and private lands as well as protect the state's natural resources. "This research paper demonstrates the importance of greater regulatory efforts by state agencies to prevent the extinction of imperiled fisheries resources," said CDFW Assistant Chief Brian Naslund. "CDFW's new Watershed Enforcement Team (WET) was created with just that in mind." The WET program works with agency partners to protect public trust resources from the negative effects of marijuana cultivation, which include both excessive water use and pollution. CDFW will continue to monitor the effects of water diversion for marijuana cultivation on stream flow through the summer of 2015. Marijuana cultivation is legal in California if growers have the proper CDFW lake and streambed alteration permits. Responsible growers help conserve the state's natural resources and are less likely to be subject to enforcement action.
