parent’s previous marriage. Current law provides no mechanism for children or relatives to petition a court for visitation when they are denied access to the elder in question by a current spouse. Nor is there an obligation for such caretakers to inform family members when an elder dies or enters acutemedical care. Gatto’s legislation would help resolve these situations by requiring children and siblings to be informed when a loved one enters into acute-medical care for more than three days, or passes away. It would also provide judges Please see page 4

Today’s Pilots Depend Too Much On Technology Aviation Expert Says It Adds to Human Error The conditions for landing the Boeing 777 safely should have been perfect, according to the National Transportation Safety Board. The sky over San Francisco was clear, the wind negligible and the pilot of Asiana Airlines Flight 214 had 11,000 feet of runway in front of him. But there was a problem. The runway’s automatic landing aids were out of service because of construction on that July 2013 day, which meant pilots had to land using old-fashioned visual and manual skills. They had been doing it all day, but the Asiana Airlines pilot later told NTSB investigators he had been

nervous about attempting to land using “stick-andrudder” flying skills, and the ensuing crash killed three people and injured nearly 200, the Associated Press reported at the time. The pilot’s hesitancy and apparent inability to fly without automated assistance didn’t surprise Rick Eriksen, an experienced aviator and one of the founders of Aviation Consulting 360 (www.AskAC360.com), a firm that specializes in assisting businesses with their aviation needs. Eriksen says he believes advances in airplane automation may have reached a point where they are starting to hinder rather than help safety, with pilots so depen-

Gatto Continues Quest to Give Rights to Kids Denied Access to Ailing Parents Assemblyman Mike Gatto (D-Glendale) introduced new legislation that would provide reasonable accommodations for adult children who want to visit their parents, and provide children the right to know when an ailing parent’s health becomes worse or if the parent dies. The proposed legislation, AB 1085, will provide legal recourse when children from previous marriages are being denied access to a parent by their parent’s current spouse or by another family member. With divorce and remarriage common, there is a possibility of conflict between a subsequent spouse and a child from an ailing

dent on the technology that they fail to develop real flying skills. Pilots also become so fixated on high-tech computer equipment that they can fail to notice hazards in clear view right outside the window, he says. “In my opinion, most technology is no longer adding anything new in the way of meaningful advancements,” Eriksen says. “Planes fly the same way they flew back when I was flying in the 1970s, ’80s and ’90s. And we made it work with much more reliability than they do with today’s over-the-top automation.” Eriksen says he loves

Giggle Fiber Expands Fastest Residential Internet in California Since entering the Arcadia and Monrovia high speed Internet market last year, Giggle Fiber has increased its data network bandwidth by 500%, and has recently completed a new Monrovia based Internet data center. Today, Giggle Fiber takes its next big step toward gigabit speeds for all, with a new residential Internet service called GiggleMAX. GiggleMAX customers pay only $5.00/month more than the price of the previous top speed 100 Meg Giggle Fiber service. The new speeds that GiggleMAX customers can now receive are the fastest in California. How fast? Really fast! It now depends mostly on each customer’s computer and router capability, not on the network. “GiggleMAX customers in Arcadia and Monrovia are no longer speed

limited primarily by their network connection, because our network is now the fastest in California. Speeds will vary instead due to the customer’s computer processing capability, and the type of wireless card in their router,” said Dave Haverkate, Giggle Fiber CEO. “Our recent field testing at different times and locations around Monrovia and Arcadia show consistently great speeds, far above the previous 100 Meg level.” Giggle Fiber is not advertising the actual GiggleMAX speed limits, because there aren’t any. As the Giggle Fiber network continues to advance, GiggleMAX customers will automatically see their speeds increase, with no need to upgrade equipment or pay more money. The public can demo GiggleMAX at the Giggle Fiber store at 512 S. Myrtle, in Monrovia, or check social media

as customers report their experience. ABOUT GIGGLE FIBER. Founded on the emerging trend that all video content is soon moving to Internet delivery, Giggle Fiber is now providing all homes and businesses in Arcadia and Monrovia with the highest quality and most reliable Internet connection. Giggle Fiber includes quality digital telephone services, and GiggleExtra — a FREE lineup of 88 channels of digital quality municipal, public, educational, Chinese and International television stations. Giggle Fiber is an authorized retailer of DIRECTV and DISH, offering the most and best programming and highest capacity HD/DVR service in the business, at the lowest prices. Giggle Fiber Commercial connects large business data clients with dedicated fiber at below market rates.

You thought Einstein was a nerd? Well, yes, he was—about energy and mass and the speed of light. The other kids figured him for a nerd. But ask teenage Einstein himself, and he felt he really was a dummy—about friends and girls (especially Elsa) and musical competitions. So the “dummy” Albert Einstein is the one we meet in a lively, engaging musical at the Sierra Madre Playhouse. It’s one of the biggest days of his young life. We find him nervously practicing his violin for tonight’s competition, wanting everything to be flawless, and especially to please his overbearing music teacher, Professor Schloppnoppdinkerdonn. In the show, there is an on-going inner tussle between Albert’s “dummy” and Albert’s “nerd.” His mind races off into concepts like entropy or gravity. Then he struggles to come back to earth—so to speak—saying, “I’m just trying to be normal.” Normal! With smug, narcissistic Constantin, the bullying, belittling classmate who seems to do everything perfectly? Normal! With Albert’s crush on Elsa, who seems not to know he exists? Yet with all else in his universe seemingly awry, he does have one faithful friend: Cat. Yes, a mysterious, human-sized Cat who interacts with the humans.

The characters are all overdrawn—caricatures, really, and they entice us to enjoy the playfulness they offer. Lots of energetic music has given Zakiya Alta Lee an opportunity to choreograph exciting dancing and acrobatics. Two of Deborah Wicks La Puma’s original songs are appropriately Einsteinianly thematic: “Particles” and “Molecular.” The story, a fictional day in Albert’s life, was written by Karen Zacarias. It takes place in an otherworldly setting—or is it other-universe setting? A huge soft-blue arc stretches across the Playhouse stage, floor to ceiling, evoking images of our globe itself. Credit Sarah Kainin’s imagination for the set design. Complementing it are video projections of the famous E=mc2 equation and other mathematical formulae rotating on the arc. Planets and stars whirl on the backdrop in a virtual light show. Sean T. Cawelti designed this innovative approach, a first-time technique at the Sierra Madre Playhouse. It is an integral feature of the musical, along with the accompanying lighting by Phillip Powers, and sound by Jeff Gardner. Vicki Conrad designed the wild, geeky costumes befitting the teenagers’ time and place. Even Cat’s colorful leotards suggest stars and planets in a whirling universe.

started as a young vine bought and planted by Alice Brugman in 1894, says Phyllis Chapman, a wellrespected Sierra Madre expert on the history of the foothill community. The Sierra Madre plant thrived and eventually destroyed the original two-story home on the lot after it was abandoned. It apparently grew into the walls, and caused the roof to collapse . By the way, the plant is commonly spelled "wisteria," but the town of Sierra Madre prefers to spell it ‘Wistaria,’ a name refer-

ring to the American physician Dr. Caspar Wistar. The spelling is a matter of some debate among plant enthusiasts. These days, Sierra Madre's plant grows on trellises that span two backyards. One of those homes is owned by Nell Solt a Swedish native who each year allows thousands of visitors to stroll her lovely backyard to see this Wistaria Wonder. The Festival runs all day Sunday. For Further information contact The Chamber of Commerce at (626) 355-5111. 9AM-5PM

In an ongoing outreach to young audiences, busloads of school kids will attend “Einstein” matinees on weekday field trips. Those performances aren’t open to the public. Families will enjoy other shows. But catch them while you can—the run is limited to Sunday matinees at 2:30 p.m. on March 22 and 29, and April 5 and 12. (Dark March 15.) “Einstein” is doublecast. Not to worry—I’ve seen both casts, and they are excellent. Actors are Thomas Anawalt, Andrea Arvanigian, Jonathan Brett, Tara Bopp, Alex Denney, Tyler Fromson, Molly Gilman, Katie Hotchkiss, Conor Lane and Matt Severyn (listed alphabetically.) Exhibits on the foyer walls display fascinating— and sometimes surprising— trivia about the real Albert Einstein. Be sure to check out the actors’ photos, too, juxtaposing current headshots with those of their own adolescence. Rachel Fain created the display content; Diane Siegel did

Derek Manson, who originated the Einstein role in the show’s 2005 premiere, directs “Einstein is a Dummy.” Estelle Campbell, Christian Lebano, and Amanda Weier are coproducers. Stage manager is Kelsey O’Keefe, with Emily Hopfauf assisting. Less than 90 minutes long, “Einstein is a Dummy” has energy and tunes to hold youngsters’ atten-

A new California Appellate case just published August 8, 2013, “Glaski v. Bank of America”, holds that a homeowner can challenge his lender’s right to foreclose by showing that the Deed of Trust never made it into the securitized trust until after the trust’s closing date. This issue is now squarely before the California Supreme Court in Yvanova v. New Century Mortgage Corp. This is the case in most loans made in the last 12 years. If the bank foreclosed we should be able to get the homeowner money damages and/or the house back. Or a lawsuit could be filed and a court ruling obtained preventing the court from foreclosing. Recently enacted Sections 2924(a)(6) and 2924.19 of California Civil Code provide the same relief to homeowners. It is highly suggested that homeowners take this window of opportunity to get relief before the banks get Congress to close this door with national legislation. Contact us so we can help you.

the authority to issue an order enforcing an elder’s right to visitation. Finally, AB 1085 authorizes an agent operating under a medical power of attorney to file a petition to enforce the principal’s rights to visitation. The legislation represents the culmination of over a year’s worth of work on this issue by Assemblyman Gatto. “Conflict among family members is the last thing our loved ones want to see as they approach their final hours,” said Gatto. “I hope this bill will help decrease the heartache and stress of families already facing difficult circumstances.” Assemblyman Gatto has been working to develop the legislation with several children who have been denied access to their ailing parents, including Kerri Kasem, radio and television personality, and

current co-host of the show “Protecting Your Family” on KABC Talk Radio. Kerri is an outspoken advocate of visitation rights for adult children as a result of her struggle to see her beloved father, broadcasting legend Casey Kasem, who struggled with poor health before his passing last year. After sharing her struggle to see her father on various media outlets, Kerri and Assemblyman Gatto received thousands of communications from across the country of similar stories of heartache. One notable example came from Catherine Falk, the daughter of actor Peter Falk, who maintained a loving relationship with her father for more than thirty years. In 2008, Mr. Falk became completely incapacitated as a result of advanced dementia. Mrs. Falk, however, failed to in-

form Catherine, or his other children of his declining condition and refused to allow his children to visit their ailing father. “The law must do more to keep up with the changing norms of modern families,” said Gatto. “AB 1085 brings the law into the 21st century and allows family members to focus on caring for their loved ones.” Mike Gatto is the Chairman of the Consumer Protection and Privacy Committee, and the longestserving current member of the State Assembly. He represents California’s 43rd Assembly District, which includes Burbank, Glendale, La Cañada Flintridge, La Crescenta, Montrose, and the Los Angeles neighborhoods of Atwater Village, East Hollywood, Franklin Hills, Hollywood Hills, Los Feliz, and Silver Lake. www.asm.ca.gov/gatto.

LASD Seeks Help: Arson Detectives from the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department Arson and Explosives Detail responded to “Crescenta Valley Tow” located at 4456 Cloud Avenue, La Crescenta Thursday, in regards to an arson fire at the police impound yard. When detectives arrived at the location, they noticed several buildings had been completely consumed by the fire. Detectives continued to examine the scene and discovered the location was equipped with a number of video surveillance cameras. An examination of the surveillance footage revealed at least two suspects had forcibly entered

the location and intentionally set fire to the structure, which included the police impound bay utilized by the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department, California Highway Patrol, and Glendale police department. Additional surveillance footage from surrounding businesses captured images of a black compact sedan, believed to be a late model Toyota Yaris approaching the location just prior to the fire being discovered. A witness from the area provided a detailed description of one of the possible suspects, which was used to create a composite sketch. Detectives believe the police impound

area may have been the intended target of this arson. The investigation is still on-going. The public is asked to contact LASD Arson and Explosives Detail Sergeant John Hanson at (323) 8817523, with any information related to this crime.

The LA Galaxy Foundation’s support of $125,000 to the American Heart Association will help fund cardiovascular health initiatives aimed at engaging young people in healthy physical activity, providing blood pressure screenings to women, and helping congenital heart defect support groups. Heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases are the leading causes of death among Americans, claiming the lives of approximately 787,000 men, women and children every year. The LA Galaxy family was personally affected by heart disease last year when Galaxy defender A. J. DeLaGarza lost his son Luca to a congenital heart defect only six days after he was born. “We’re extremely proud and honored to help contribute to the lifesaving work of the American Heart Association,” said LA Galaxy Chris Klein.

“This is an organization whose cause is very near to our club and we look forward to the working alongside AHA this year to help fight heart disease in our communities.” The Galaxy’s sponsorship will also benefit the AHA’s lifesaving work, including funding innovative scientific research, bringing health education programs to children and adults in the community, setting sciencebased best practices for treating heart disease and stroke and advocating for policies that positively im-

pact cardiovascular health. “We are thrilled to work with the LA Galaxy Foundation and look forward to seeing the impact this collaboration will have on the heart health of our community,” said Tammy Rocker, American Heart Association Senior Vice President of Southern California. “Eighty percent of heart disease and stroke can be prevented, and strong, synergistic collaborations such as this are important as we work to empower Los Angeles to live healthier lives.”
