Train Testing Underway Throughout Summer Along the Foothill Gold Line BY TERRY MILLER

T

rain testing for the 11.5-mile Foothill Gold Line light rail project from Pasadena to Azusa has started in earnest this month and will continue through summer 2015. Testing is currently taking place in the city of Duarte and portions of Irwindale, and will expand to the cities of Pasadena, Arcadia, Monrovia and Azusa over the next several months. As a result of the train testing, some construction activities will need to be done during a second shift when trains are not occupying the tracks. Second shifts will be necessary periodically and will take place throughout the corridor. Second shifts will start at 3:30 p.m. and conclude by 11:00 p.m. All sound walls are now installed and the activities that will be performed during the second shift will generally be of low impact to the surrounding comSEE PG. 8

The two words Mayor Mary Ann Lutz used repeatedly during her State of the City address at Krikorian Theater on Monday evening were “great” and “renewal.” She started her address saying, “The state of the City is strong, secure and our future is great! In Monrovia … greatness is real.” Lutz explained that Monrovia is a team (another recurring theme), and delineated the members of the “team” including the other four member of the City Council, the city clerk and treasurer, as well as city staff and members of the city’s boards and

commissioners. She also included the school board and all those who work for the schools as part of the “team.” She noted that all the community’s volunteers, individuals as well as members of clubs and various organizations in town, were part of the “team” as well. Citing the difficulty of overcoming the recession that she noted began in 2008, the mayor announced that despite the difficult economic times, Monrovia had “continued to do amazing things” and had done so while maintaining a balanced budget.
