Train testing for the 11.5-mile Foothill Gold Line light rail project from Pasadena to Azusa has started in earnest this month and will continue thru Summer 2015. Testing
is currently taking place in the city of Duarte and portions of Irwindale, and will expand to the cities of Pasadena, Arcadia, Monrovia and Azusa over the next several months.
Holden to Recognize Pasadena’s Joan Williams Assemblymember Chris Holden (D-Pasadena) and the California Legislative Black Caucus will honor longtime Pasadena resident Joan Williams at a Feb. 9 ceremony at the State Capitol marking Black History Month. Williams’ story came to light late last year when reporters wrote about her being denied the honor of riding in the 1958 Rose Parade because of her race. After she had been named Miss Crown City that year, city officials discovered she was African-American and suddenly there was “no money” for a float. 57 years later, the city apologized and Tournament officials offered her a place in this year’s parade. Her story has now come full circle.

The Pasadena Playhouse An Un-Cruise Adventure through the presents “A Conversation with Patricia Morison” Sea of Cortes Part 1 By GREG aragon Famed oceanographer Jaques Cousteau once described the Sea of Cortes as the “world’s aquarium” and called it the “Galapagos of North America.” And after seven days sailing these Mexican waters aboard the 232-ft Safari Endeavor cruise ship, I have to agree with him. The area is a wonderland of natural beauty, wildlife and adventure. My getaway to Baja California began when a friend and I recently flew to Los Cabos International Airport aboard Alaska Airlines. Once on the ground we were met by representatives with Un-Cruise Adventures, who transported us to the Safari Endeavor ship at a small, rustic harbor in the city of Los Cabos, Mexico. Once aboard the 84-passenger vessel, we met Captain Barrett Whitten and his crew, and enjoyed a cocktail welcome reception. We were then escorted to our cabin on deck 3. And after a brief and mandatory safety drill we lifted anchor and sailed into the Mexican sunset. As the ship cruised north up the Sea of Cortez, it hugged the rugged coastline, giving passengers a preview of the weeklong adventure ahead. There were endless miles of deserted beaches, jagged mountains and hidden coves to explore. And
since this was an Un-Cruise expedition, aboard a small ship, it meant docking in tiny bays, using snorkeling gear, kayaks and paddleboards to explore by water, and our feet to discov-
er uncharted land. The Sea of Cortés, also known as the Gulf of California, is thought to be one of the most diverse seas on earth. In 2005 the islands of the gulf were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, for their natural beauty, diversity of terrestrial and marine life, and by ranking higher than any other marine and insular World Heritage site for the unique examples of “bridge islands” within a very short distance. Our first stop on the cruise was gorgeous and deserted Ensenada Grande. Located on Isla Partida, Ensenada Grande is part of a protected UNESCO biosphere reserve. With the Endeavor anchored a few hundred
feet off shore we took small skiffs to the beach, where we set up camp and went exploring. Along my hike, I discovered a myriad of desert cactus hiding behind large

Once again, I realized the benefits of a “small” boat compared to some of the mega cruise ships out there. At only 230 ft-long the Endeavor can drop anchor off pretty much any isolated island location. After a short skiff ride to the beach, we met a local rancher, who took us on a burro ride through the canyons and mountains to experience the “real Baja.” Along the way, we encountered a desert oasis, numerous caption -Photo by types of giant cactus, a lost beach, sand bluffs, and while and listened to our guide walking along the shore, sing traditional Mexican I examined puffer fish Ranchero songs. skeletons, unique shells, While we rode burros, and dove in the clear tur- fellow passengers kayaked quoise water to keep cool and snorkeled around in the 80-degree day. This special event, honoring Broadway legend Patricia Morison (the original star of KISS ME, KATE) four days before her 100th birthday, takes place from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. on The Playhouse’s Engemann Family Courtyard. Ms. Morison will be joined by Director/Producer John Bowab for a unique conversation about her distinguished career in theatre and film, and her experiences working on Broadway with such luminaries as Cole Porter, Yul Brynner and Helen Hayes. Guests will also have the opportunity to ask Ms. Morison questions. Following the conversation, Ms. Morison will perform two musical numbers, accompanied by Tom Griep. The event will conclude with a special meet-and-greet with Ms. Morison. Sheldon Epps, Artistic Director of The Pasadena Playhouse, said “Our recent production of KISS ME, KATE was truly rendered all the more special by the presence of the original ‘Kate,’ Patri-
cia Morison, at Opening Night. Ms. Morison’s career spans the breadth of Broadway’s Golden Age. I am thrilled and honored to welcome her once again to The Playhouse as we celebrate her Centennial. I look forward to hearing her wonderful stories - and hopefully a few songs as well!” Patricia Morison (born March 19, 1915) created the role of Lilli/Kate in the original Broadway production of KISS ME, KATE in 1948, opposite Alfred Drake. She made her Broadway debut in 1933 and followed KISS ME, KATE by starring on Broadway and on the road in THE KING AND I opposite Yul Brynner (including the first-ever Los Angeles production in 1954). Ms. Morison was present this past September at the Opening Night of The Pasadena Playhouse’s KISS ME, KATE, starring Wayne Brady and Merle Dandridge and directed by Sheldon Epps. Tickets for CONVERSATION WITH PATRICIA MORISON are $100 in honor of Ms. Morison’s 1001h Birthday. Each ticket purchased will support theatrical artistry at The Pasadena Playhouse and are available at Pasadena Playhouse.org or by calling the Development Office at (626) 737-2852.

Parents Urged to Vaccinate Children in Wake of Measles Outbreak State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson today issued the following statement in the wake of continued reports of measles outbreaks nationwide: “I urge parents to get all the recommended vaccinations for their children. Vaccines help students avoid crippling, debilitating, and costly diseases such as measles, mumps, rubella, and chicken pox. They keep students
healthy so they can attend school, learn, and succeed, and they eliminate school disruptions such as those caused by the recent outbreak of measles. “As a science teacher, I have reviewed the science and can tell you the vaccines have been proven safe and effective for those students who are healthy enough to get the immunizations. They keep your child and your community protected.”

At some point, Garcia hydroplaned and crashed into the back of a tractor located in a freeway construction area, the prosecutor said. Soloman died from her injuries, while two other passengers sustained trauma from the car wreck. Soon after the collision, authorities arrived and arrested Garcia. Zhongshanlu Primary School Visits Friendly El Monte! By Nick Kipley The El Monte City Council Chamber was flooded in a sea of bright orange baseball caps and t-shirts this past Tuesday morning when a group of students from Zhongshanlu Primary School in Harbin City, China arrived for their annual visit. The kids ages varied between what in an American school setting might have been a class of fifth or sixth graders. Once all the kids had filed in from the busses, speeches were given explaining the roles played by leaders in civic Government by several members of city staff. Vice Mayor Patel and City Manager Godinez both informed the group of students of their roles in the institution, while the kids squirmed in their chairs, watching all the action through an iPhone apiece. A translator was made available for the first set of speeches, but, when asked if the kids were ready to have fun they all unanimously shouted, “YES!” After that, the organization of the kids into a big, circular tour around city hall and the El Monte Police Department began. At first, efforts were wildly disorganized with the group seemingly more interested in taking photos of everything with their smartphones. But, eventually, the adults were able to wrangle the kids together in big patches and it was clear the that participating staff
members had a blast. First things first though, the group had to be split into thirds so they could be subdivided amongst different civic departments. “Group 2,” was the first to go visit the Police Department and since Sgt. Martinez was handing out a gigantic roll of stickershaped deputy badges, the Examiner immediately saw a prime journalistic opportunity. Soon, every kid had been deputized and they began excitedly re-taking all the pictures they had just been taking, in order to fully capture the excitement of their new badge. Once finally inside El Monte PD, no less than twenty iPhones were held aloft at all times, to capture pictures of the guns, badges and police uniforms proudly upon display on the walls. A young man approached this Reporter from the Examiner with a stack of coupons granting $4 off a car wash and asked, “Excuse me, what’s this?” The young man was patient and courteous with the official explanation given by the Examiner as to what a car wash is, given that this explanation was not limited to pantomiming all the machines in a mechanized car wash: the spinning brushes, the jetting wax, and that big tongue-shaped thing that blow dries your car at the end. The young man very politely said, “Oh, thank you!” and walked off, nod-
ding eagerly. Sgt. Martinez then led the kids outside so they could take some photos of the police cars in the department’s lot. Next up, the kids visited City Hall where Jason C. Mikaelian of the Economic Development Department showed the kids maps of the city and explained to them the different areas of El Monte and the big projects currently under development. Two young men in the back of the crowd were playing that game that all young men play in fifth or sixth grade where you kick your friend in the butt, and then he kicks you back, and it goes on until the teacher pulls you apart and says, “ENOUGH!” And even though this reporter for the Examiner doesn’t have a proficiency in Chinese, he is very certain that’s what the teacher did indeed say. The day concluded with the students standing before the El Monte Statue of Liberty, taking photos in groups of three or four, before regrouping in different groups of three or four. After all the combinations of groups had been exhausted, it was time to get back on the bus and the kids departed for their next stop, taking pictures over everything in sight, smartphones held aloft. PRESCRIBING FOR SLEEP APNEA? YOUR DME COMPANY LETTING YOU DOWN? If you’re frustrated with your DME provider, find out why thousands of physicians prefer “Classic”
Why Classic?
We relieve you from the burden of answering day-to-day equipment issues.
“Sleep” is our specialty. That’s right, no oxygen, scooters, wheelchairs, beds or other DME. We supply only PAP equipment and related replenishment supplies. This allows us to be real experts in what we do and to concentrate on delivering the patient care that matters. The fact we serve more than 18,000 patients over 18 states and are growing rapidly is testament to our focus and commitment to delivering timely setup and having happy and compliant patients.
able to continue to collect usage data.
Compliance through great patient care
When calling patients we use data generated from our proprietary Download on Demand® software. This takes the raw data streams from patient’s modems, parses the data to produce compliance reports containing key data points and a graph that our clinicians use so that they can have an intelligent conversation with the patient based on that patient’s actual use of their equipment. Of course patients can (and do!) call in to our patient care center for help and advice from our clinicians at any time.
is what really sets us apart from the pack. Our licensed respiratory professionals (respiratory therapists and registered sleep techs) work with patients from the time of setup and throughout their therapy with one goal in mind…to ensure they quickly adapt to their therapy and stay compliant over time.
Our CPAP Circle of Care® program
was carefully designed to achieve this. The first step of the program is for one of our licensed respiratory therapists to complete the setup faceto-face with the patient, either in their home or their doctor’s office, usually within 72 hours of approval. Our R/T will set the machine to the prescription and then educate the patient on its use, care and maintenance. And educate the patient on what to expect over the first days and weeks of their therapy. We set up all patients on the highest quality machines fitted with wireless modems (regardless of insurance). And we leave the modems on the machine indefinitely so as to be
Interested in learning more? www.classicsleepcare.com
After setup patients are passed to our patient care center for ongoing compliance care. Our licensed clinicians make outgoing calls at 72 hours, 30 days and 90 days after setup to interdict any problems patients may be having. A field R/T will make a re-visit to a patient in their home where a problem cannot be resolved over the phone.
Download on Demand® - Driving Compliance
Our goal is to have happy, compliant patients while taking the brunt of the every-day questions patients invariably have. This relieves the burden from our referring physician’s offices who otherwise have to deal with this call volume, and depending on the experience of the doctor in this field, may not be able to answer typical questions the patient has regarding equipment issues (e.g. how to fix a leaking mask).
Skeptical?
So you’ve heard it all before? All the DME’s brag that they’re the best and have a great compliance and supply replenishment program.... everybody talks the talk...so who do you believe? Your patients...that’s who! We’ll prove it to you. The prescribing doctor receives documentation by eFax (or electronically via EMR system integration), starting with confirmation of receipt of the referral through every touch we have with the patient. This includes a copy of the 2-page compliance reports containing our Download on Demand® data and a copy of the notes made by our clinician during a call. Our proprietary systems automate the flow of documentation keeping referring doctors completely informed about their patients’ progress and ensure physicians have the documentation they need for follow-up consultations with their patients.
