Cheeseburger Challenge Results Released Pasadena celebrated all things cheeseburger during Cheeseburger Week Jan. 11th to 16th. Visitors enjoyed food created especially for the event, took advantage of great deals and meals, followed cheeseburger crawls and voted in the 2015 Cheeseburger Challenge. In all, 1596 votes were cast in the Cheeseburger Challenge to determine favorites in 14 categories ranging from Favorite Burger to favorite Dessert after a Burger. (Not everyone voted in each category.) Here are the results of the 2015 Cheeseburger Challenge. Thank you to all the restaurant participants and everyone who voted in this year’s Challenge. A 51-year-old man convicted of killing one of his passenger’s while driving under the influence of alcohol was sentenced today to 13 years in state prison, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced. Jacob Garcia Jr. of Pomona pleaded no contest on Nov. 6, 2014, to one felony count of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated in case GA082043. At lats week’s sentencing, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Cathryn F. Brougham also ordered the defendant to pay restitution in the amount of $8,377.64 to the victim’s family. Deputy District Attorney Kevin Keeland, who prosecuted the case, said in the early morning of Dec. 16, 2010, Garcia was driving under the in-

Holden to Recognize Pasadena’s Joan Williams Assemblymember Chris Holden (D-Pasadena) and the California Legislative Black Caucus will honor longtime Pasadena resident Joan Williams at a Feb. 9 ceremony at the State Capitol marking Black History Month. Williams’ story came to light late last year when reporters wrote about her being denied the honor of riding in the 1958 Rose Parade because of her race. After she had been named Miss Crown City that year, city officials discovered she was African-American and suddenly there was “no money” for a float. 57 years later, the city apologized and Tournament officials offered her a place in this year’s parade. Her story has now come full circle.

February is Black History month. Battleship IOWA will honor and celebrate the impact African Americans have had in the United States Navy and to this country with a series of free events and tributes, culminating with the presentation of the second annual Admiral Samuel L. Gravely Service and Leadership Award. On Sunday Feb. 1, a new display entitled “Celebrating the American Spirit – Battleship Iowa Salutes Black History Month” will be unveiled. Artifacts, news clippings, and photography will offer visitors insight into five pioneering black servicemen.
